On some modules supported in the Chow variety

The study of Chow varieties of decomposable forms lies at the confluence of algebraic geometry, commutative algebra, representation theory and combinatorics. There are many open questions about homological properties of Chow varieties and interesting classes of modules supported on them. The goal of this note is to survey some fundamental constructions and properties of these objects, and to propose some new directions of research. Our main focus will be on the study of certain maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules of covariants supported on Chow varieties, and on defining equations and syzygies. We also explain how to assemble Tor groups over Veronese subalgebras into modules over a Chow variety, leading to a result on the polynomial growth of these groups.

Koszul modules and Green's conjecture

We prove a strong vanishing result for finite length Koszul modules, and use it to derive Green's conjecture for every g-cuspidal rational curve over an algebraically closed field k with char(k) = 0 or char(k) >= (g+2)/2. As a consequence, we deduce that the general canonical curve of genus g satisfies Green's conjecture in this range. Our results are new in positive characteristic, whereas in characteristic zero they provide a different proof for theorems first obtained in two landmark papers by Voisin. Our strategy involves establishing two key results of independent interest: (1) we describe an explicit, characteristic-independent version of Hermite reciprocity for sl_2-representations; (2) we completely characterize, in arbitrary characteristics, the (non-)vanishing behavior of the syzygies of the tangential variety to a rational normal curve.

Moduli spaces of representations of special biserial algebras

We show that the irreducible components of any moduli space of semistable representations of a special biserial algebra are always isomorphic to products of projective spaces of various dimensions. This is done by showing that irreducible components of varieties of representations of special biserial algebras are isomorphic to irreducible components of products of varieties of circular complexes, and therefore normal, allowing us to apply recent results of the second and third authors on moduli spaces.

Generic free resolutions and root systems

In this paper I give an explicit construction of the generic ring R_{gen} for finite free resolutions of length 3. The corresponding problem for resolutions of length 2 was solved in 1970'ies by Hochster and Huneke. The key role is played by the defect Lie algebra introduced in my old work on the subject. The defect Lie algebra turns out to be a parabolic Lie algebra in a Kac-Moody Lie algebra associated to the graph T_{p,q,r} corresponding to the format of the resolution. The ring R_{gen} is Noetherian if and only if the graph T_{p.q.r} is a Dynkin graph.

Isotropic Schur roots

In this paper, we study the isotropic Schur roots of an acyclic quiver $Q$ with $n$ vertices. We study the perpendicular category $\mathcal{A}(d)$ of a dimension vector $d$ and give a complete description of it when $d$ is an isotropic Schur $δ$. This is done by using exceptional sequences and by defining a subcategory $\mathcal{R}(Q,δ)$ attached to the pair $(Q,δ)$. The latter category is always equivalent to the category of representations of a connected acyclic quiver $Q_{\mathcal{R}}$ of tame type, having a unique isotropic Schur root, say $δ_{\mathcal{R}}$. The understanding of the simple objects in $\mathcal{A}(δ)$ allows us to get a finite set of generators for the ring of semi-invariants SI$(Q,δ)$ of $Q$ of dimension vector $δ$. The relations among these generators come from the representation theory of the category $\mathcal{R}(Q,δ)$ and from a beautiful description of the cone of dimension vectors of $\mathcal{A}(δ)$. Indeed, we show that SI$(Q,δ)$ is isomorphic to the ring of semi-invariants SI$(Q_{\mathcal{R}},δ_{\mathcal{R}})$ to which we adjoin variables. In particular, using a result of Skowroński and Weyman, the ring SI$(Q,δ)$ is a polynomial ring or a hypersurface. Finally, we provide an algorithm for finding all isotropic Schur roots of $Q$. This is done by an action of the braid group $B_{n-1}$ on some exceptional sequences. This action admits finitely many orbits, each such orbit corresponding to an isotropic Schur root of a tame full subquiver of $Q$.

Picture groups of finite type and cohomology in type $A_n$

For every quiver (valued) of finite representation type we define a finitely presented group called a picture group. This group is very closely related to the cluster theory of the quiver. For example, positive expressions for the Coxeter element in the group are in bijection with maximal green sequences [IT17]. The picture group is derived from the semi-invariant picture for the quiver. We use this picture to construct a finite CW complex which (by [IT16]) is a $K(π,1)$ for this group. The cells are in bijection with cluster tilting objects. For example, in type $A_n$ there are a Catalan number of cells. The main result of this paper is the computation of the cohomology ring of all picture groups of type $A_n$ with any orientation and any coefficient ring.

The method of shifted partial derivatives cannot separate the permanent from the determinant

The method of shifted partial derivatives was used to prove a super-polynomial lower bound on the size of depth four circuits needed to compute the permanent. We show that this method alone cannot prove that the padded permanent $\ell^{n-m} perm_m$ cannot be realized inside the $GL_{n^2}$-orbit closure of the determinant $ det_n$ when $n>2m^2+2m$. Our proof relies on several simple degenerations of the determinant polynomial, Macaulay's theorem that gives a lower bound on the growth of an ideal, and a lower bound estimate from Gupta et. al. regarding the shifted partial derivatives of the determinant.

The syzygies of some thickenings of determinantal varieties

The vector space of m x n complex matrices (m >= n) admits a natural action of the group GL = GL_m x GL_n via row and column operations. For positive integers a,b, we consider the ideal I_{a x b} defined as the smallest GL-equivariant ideal containing the b-th powers of the a x a minors of the generic m x n matrix. We compute the syzygies of the ideals I_{a x b} for all a,b, together with their GL-equivariant structure, generalizing earlier results of Lascoux for the ideals of minors (b=1), and of Akin-Buchsbaum-Weyman for the powers of the ideals of maximal minors (a=n). Our methods rely on a nice connection between commutative algebra and the representation theory of the superalgebra gl(m|n), as well as on our previous calculation of Ext modules done in the context of describing local cohomology with determinantal support. Our results constitute an important ingredient in the proof by Nagpal-Sam-Snowden of the first non-trivial Noetherianity results for twisted commutative algebras which are not generated in degree one.

Modulated semi-invariants

We prove the basic properties of determinantal semi-invariants for presentation spaces over any finite dimensional hereditary algebra over any field. These include the virtual generic decomposition theorem, stability theorem and the c-vector theorem which says that the c-vectors of a cluster tilting object are, up to sign, the determinantal weights of the determinantal semi-invariants defined on the cluster tilting objects. Applications of these theorems are given in several concurrently written papers.

Littlewood complexes and analogues of determinantal varieties

One interesting combinatorial feature of classical determinantal varieties is that the character of their coordinate rings give a natural truncation of the Cauchy identity in the theory of symmetric functions. Natural generalizations of these varieties exist and have been studied for the other classical groups. In this paper we develop the relevant properties from scratch. By studying the isotypic decomposition of their minimal free resolutions one can recover classical identities due to Littlewood for expressing an irreducible character of a classical group in terms of Schur functions. We propose generalizations for the exceptional groups. In type G_2, we completely analyze the variety and its minimal free resolution and get an analogue of Littlewood's identities. We have partial results for the other cases. In particular, these varieties are always normal with rational singularities.

Periodic trees and semi-invariants

Periodic trees are combinatorial structures which are in bijection with cluster tilting objects in cluster categories of affine type $\tilde{A}_{n-1}$. The internal edges of the tree encode the $c$-vectors corresponding to the cluster tilting object, as well as the weights of the virtual semi-invariants associated to the cluster tilting object. We also show a direct relationship between the position of the edges of the tree and whether the corresponding summands of the cluster tilting object are preprojective, preinjective or regular.

Geometry of orbit closures for the representations associated to gradings of Lie algebras of types $E_7$

This paper is a continuation of arXiv:1201.1102. We investigate the orbit closures for the class of representations of simple algebraic groups associated to various gradings on the simple Lie algebra of type $E_7$. The methods for classifying the orbits for these actions were developed by Vinberg . We give the orbit descriptions, the degeneration partial orders, and indicate normality of the orbit closures. We also investigate the rational singularities, Cohen-Macaulay and Gorenstein properties for the orbit closures. We give the information on the defining ideals of orbit closures.

Homology of Littlewood complexes

Let V be a symplectic vector space of dimension 2n. Given a partition λwith at most n parts, there is an associated irreducible representation S_{[λ]}(V) of Sp(V). This representation admits a resolution by a natural complex L^λ, which we call the Littlewood complex, whose terms are restrictions of representations of GL(V). When λhas more than n parts, the representation S_{[λ]}(V) is not defined, but the Littlewood complex L^λstill makes sense. The purpose of this paper is to compute its homology. We find that either L^λis acyclic or that it has a unique non-zero homology group, which forms an irreducible representation of Sp(V). The non-zero homology group, if it exists, can be computed by a rule reminiscent of that occurring in the Borel-Weil-Bott theorem. This result can be interpreted as the computation of the "derived specialization" of irreducible representations of Sp(\infty), and as such categorifies earlier results of Koike-Terada on universal character rings. We prove analogous results for orthogonal and general linear groups. Along the way, we will see two topics from commutative algebra: the minimal free resolutions of determinantal ideals and Koszul homology.

Local cohomology with support in generic determinantal ideals

For positive integers m >= n >= p, we compute the GL_m x GL_n-equivariant description of the local cohomology modules of the polynomial ring S of functions on the space of m x n matrices, with support in the ideal of p x p minors. Our techniques allow us to explicitly compute all the modules Ext_S(S/I_x,S), for x a partition and I_x the ideal generated by the irreducible sub-representation of S indexed by x. In particular we determine the regularity of the ideals I_x, and we deduce that the only ones admitting a linear free resolution are the powers of the ideal of maximal minors of the generic matrix, as well as the products between such powers and the maximal ideal of S.

Local cohomology with support in ideals of maximal minors and sub-maximal Pfaffians

We compute the GL-equivariant description of the local cohomology modules with support in the ideal of maximal minors of a generic matrix, as well as of those with support in the ideal of 2n x 2n Pfaffians of a (2n+1)x(2n+1) generic skew-symmetric matrix. As an application, we characterize the Cohen-Macaulay modules of covariants for the action of the special linear group SL(G) on G^m. The main tool we develop is a method for computing certain Ext modules based on the geometric technique for computing syzygies and on Matlis duality.

Module varieties and representation type of finite-dimensional algebras

In this paper we seek geometric and invariant-theoretic characterizations of (Schur-)representation finite algebras. To this end, we introduce two classes of finite-dimensional algebras: those with the dense-orbit property and those with the multiplicity-free property. We show first that when a connected algebra A admits a preprojective component, each of these properties is equivalent to A being representation-finite. Next, we give an example of an algebra which is not representation-finite but still has the dense-orbit property. We also show that the string algebras with the dense orbit-property are precisely the representation-finite ones. Finally, we show that a tame algebra has the multiplicity-free property if and only if it is Schur-representation-finite.

Moduli of Abelian varieties, Vinberg theta-groups, and free resolutions

We present a systematic approach to studying the geometric aspects of Vinberg theta-representations. The main idea is to use the Borel-Weil construction for representations of reductive groups as sections of homogeneous bundles on homogeneous spaces, and then to study degeneracy loci of these vector bundles. Our main technical tool is to use free resolutions as an "enhanced" version of degeneracy loci formulas. We illustrate our approach on several examples and show how they are connected to moduli spaces of Abelian varieties. To make the article accessible to both algebraists and geometers, we also include background material on free resolutions and representation theory.

Pieri resolutions for classical groups

We generalize the constructions of Eisenbud, Fløystad, and Weyman for equivariant minimal free resolutions over the general linear group, and we construct equivariant resolutions over the orthogonal and symplectic groups. We also conjecture and provide some partial results for the existence of an equivariant analogue of Boij-Söderberg decompositions for Betti tables, which were proven to exist in the non-equivariant setting by Eisenbud and Schreyer. Many examples are given.

An overview of mathematical issues arising in the Geometric complexity theory approach to VP v.s. VNP

We discuss the geometry of orbit closures and the asymptotic behavior of Kronecker coefficients in the context of the Geometric Complexity Theory program to prove a variant of Valiant's algebraic analog of the P not equal to NP conjecture. We also describe the precise separation of complexity classes that their program proposes to demonstrate.

Generic decompositions and semi-invariants for string algebras

We investigate the rings of semi-invariants for tame string algebras A(n) of non-polynomial growth. We are interested in dimension vectors of band modules. We use geometric technique related to the description of coordinate rings on varieties of complexes. The fascinating combinatorics emerges, showing that our rings of invariants are the rings of some toric varieties. We show that for $n\le 6$ the rings of semi-invariants are complete intersections but we show an example for $n=7$ that this is not the case in general.

Semi-Invariants for Gentle String Algebras

In this article we give an algorithm for determining the generators and relations for the rings of semi-invariant functions on irreducible components of representation spaces for gentle string algebras. These rings of semi-invariants turn out to be semigroup rings to which we can associate a so-called matching graph. Under this association, generators for the semigroup can be seen by certain walks on this graph, and relations are given by certain configurations in the graph. This allows us to determine degree bounds for the generators and relations of these rings. We furthermore show that these bounds also hold for acyclic string algebras in general.

Quivers with potentials and their representations II: Applications to cluster algebras

We continue the study of quivers with potentials and their representations initiated in the first paper of the series. Here we develop some applications of this theory to cluster algebras. As shown in the "Cluster algebras IV" paper, the cluster algebra structure is to a large extent controlled by a family of integer vectors called g-vectors, and a family of integer polynomials called F-polynomials. In the case of skew-symmetric exchange matrices we find an interpretation of these g-vectors and F-polynomials in terms of (decorated) representations of quivers with potentials. Using this interpretation, we prove most of the conjectures about g-vectors and F-polynomials made in loc. cit.

The Existence of Pure Free Resolutions

Let d1,...,dn be a strictly increasing sequence of integers. Boij and Söderberg [arXiv:math/0611081] have conjectured the existence of a graded module M of finite length over any polynomial ring K[x_1,..., x_n], whose minimal free resolution is pure of type (d1,...,dn), in the sense that its i-th syzygies are generated in degree di. In this paper we prove a stronger statement, in characteristic zero: Such modules not only exist, but can be taken to be GL(n)-equivariant. In fact, we give two different equivariant constructions, and we construct pure resolutions over exterior algebras and Z/2-graded algebras as well. The constructions use the combinatorics of Schur functors and Bott's Theorem on the direct images of equivariant vector bundles on Grassmann varieties.

Cluster Complexes via Semi-Invariants

We define and study virtual representation spaces having both positive and negative dimensions at the vertices of a quiver without oriented cycles. We consider the natural semi-invariants on these spaces which we call virtual semi-invariants and prove that they satisfy the three basic theorems: the First Fundamental Theorem, the Saturation Theorem and the Canonical Decomposition Theorem. In the special case of Dynkin quivers with n vertices this gives the fundamental interrelationship between supports of the semi-invariants and the Tilting Triangulation of the (n-1)-sphere.

The Combinatorics of Quiver Representations

We give a description of faces of all codimensions for the cones of weights of rings of semi-invariants of quivers. For a triple flag quiver and faces of codimension 1 this reduces to the result of Knutson-Tao-Woodward on the facets of the Klyachko cone. We give new applications to Littlewood-Richardson coefficients, including a product formula for LR-coefficients corresponding to triples of partitions lying on a wall of the Klyachko cone. We systematically review and develop the necessary methods (exceptional and Schur sequences, orthogonal categories, semi-stable decompositions, GIT quotients for quivers). In the Appendix we include a version of Belkale's geometric proof of Fulton's conjecture that works for arbitrary quivers.

Multiple Flag Varieties of Finite Type

We classify all products of flag varieties with finitely many orbits under the diagonal action of the general linear group. We also classify the orbits in each case and construct explicit representatives. This generalizes the classical Schubert decompostion, which states that the GL(n)-orbits on a product of two flag varieties correspond to permutations. Our main tool is the theory of quiver representations.

Symplectic multiple flag varieties of finite type

Problem: Given a reductive algebraic group G, find all k-tuples of parabolic subgroups (P_1,...,P_k) such that the product of flag varieties G/P_1 x ... x G/P_k has finitely many orbits under the diagonal action of G. In this case we call G/P_1 x ... x G/P_k a multiple flag variety of finite type. (If P_1 is a Borel subgroup, the partial product G/P_2 x ... x G/P_k is a spherical variety.) In this paper we solve this problem in the case of the symplectic group G = Sp(2n). We also give a complete enumeration of the orbits, and explicit representatives for them. (It is well known that for k=2 the orbits are essentially Schubert varieties.) Our main tool is the algebraic theory of quiver representations. Rather unexpectedly, it turns out that we can use the same techniques in the present case as we did for G = GL(n) in math.AG/9805067.
