Holographic dual to charged SYK from 3D Gravity and Chern-Simons

In this paper, we obtain a bulk dual to SYK model, including SYK model with $U(1)$ charge, by Kaluza-Klein (KK) reduction from three dimensions. We show that KK reduction of the 3D Einstein action plus its boundary term gives the Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) model in 2D with the appropriate 1D boundary term. The size of the KK radius gets identified with the value of the dilaton in the resulting near-AdS$_2$ geometry. In presence of U(1) charge, the 3D model additionally includes a $U(1)$ Chern-Simons (CS) action. In order to describe a boundary theory with non-zero chemical potential, we also introduce a coupling between CS gauge field and bulk gravity. The 3D CS action plus the new coupling term with appropriate boundary terms reduce in two dimensions to a BF-type action plus a source term and boundary terms. The KK reduced 2D theory represents the soft sector of the charged SYK model. The pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone modes of combined $\textit{Diff} /\mathbb{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ and $U(1)_{\rm local}/U(1)$ transformations are represented by combined large diffeomorphisms and large gauge transformations. The effective action of the former is reproduced by the action cost of the latter in the bulk dual, after appropriate identification of parameters. We compute chaotic correlators from the bulk and reproduce the result that the contribution from the "boundary photons" corresponds to zero Liapunov exponent.

Gravitational collapse in SYK models and Choptuik-like phenomenon

SYK model is a quantum mechanical model of fermions which is solvable at strong coupling and plays an important role as perhaps the simplest holographic model of quantum gravity and black holes. The present work considers a deformed SYK model and a sudden quantum quench in the deformation parameter. The system, as in the undeformed case, permits a low energy description in terms of pseudo Nambu Goldstone modes. The bulk dual of such a system represents a gravitational collapse, which is characterized by a bulk matter stress tensor whose value near the boundary shows a sudden jump at the time of the quench. The resulting gravitational collapse forms a black hole only if the deformation parameter $Δε$ exceeds a certain critical value $Δε_c$ and forms a horizonless geometry otherwise. In case a black hole does form, the resulting Hawking temperature is given by a fractional power $T_{bh} \propto (Δε- Δε_c)^{1/2}$, which is reminiscent of the `Choptuik phenomenon' of critical gravitational collapse.

Unitarity, Crossing Symmetry and Duality of the S-matrix in large N Chern-Simons theories with fundamental matter

We present explicit computations and conjectures for $2 \to 2$ scattering matrices in large $N$ {\it $U(N)$} Chern-Simons theories coupled to fundamental bosonic or fermionic matter to all orders in the 't Hooft coupling expansion. The bosonic and fermionic S-matrices map to each other under the recently conjectured Bose-Fermi duality after a level-rank transposition. The S-matrices presented in this paper may be regarded as relativistic generalization of Aharonov-Bohm scattering. They have unusual structural features: they include a non analytic piece localized on forward scattering, and obey modified crossing symmetry rules. We conjecture that these unusual features are properties of S-matrices in all Chern-Simons matter theories. The S-matrix in one of the exchange channels in our paper has an anyonic character; the parameter map of the conjectured Bose-Fermi duality may be derived by equating the anyonic phase in the bosonic and fermionic theories.

Phases of large $N$ vector Chern-Simons theories on $S^2 \times S^1$

We study the thermal partition function of level $k$ U(N) Chern-Simons theories on $S^2$ interacting with matter in the fundamental representation. We work in the 't Hooft limit, $N,k\to\infty$, with $λ= N/k$ and $\frac{T^2 V_{2}}{N}$ held fixed where $T$ is the temperature and $V_{2}$ the volume of the sphere. An effective action proposed in arXiv:1211.4843 relates the partition function to the expectation value of a `potential' function of the $S^1$ holonomy in pure Chern-Simons theory; in several examples we compute the holonomy potential as a function of $λ$. We use level rank duality of pure Chern-Simons theory to demonstrate the equality of thermal partition functions of previously conjectured dual pairs of theories as a function of the temperature. We reduce the partition function to a matrix integral over holonomies. The summation over flux sectors quantizes the eigenvalues of this matrix in units of ${2π\over k}$ and the eigenvalue density of the holonomy matrix is bounded from above by $\frac{1}{2 πλ}$. The corresponding matrix integrals generically undergo two phase transitions as a function of temperature. For several Chern-Simons matter theories we are able to exactly solve the relevant matrix models in the low temperature phase, and determine the phase transition temperature as a function of $λ$. At low temperatures our partition function smoothly matches onto the $N$ and $λ$ independent free energy of a gas of non renormalized multi trace operators. We also find an exact solution to a simple toy matrix model; the large $N$ Gross-Witten-Wadia matrix integral subject to an upper bound on eigenvalue density.

Supersymmetric Chern-Simons Theories with Vector Matter

In this paper we discuss SU(N) Chern-Simons theories at level k with both fermionic and bosonic vector matter. In particular we present an exact calculation of the free energy of the N=2 supersymmetric model (with one chiral field) for all values of the 't Hooft coupling in the large N limit. This is done by using a generalization of the standard Hubbard-Stratanovich method because the SUSY model contains higher order polynomial interactions.

A Study of U(N) Lattice Gauge Theory in 2-dimensions

This is an edited version of an unpublished 1979 EFI (U. Chicago) preprint: "The U(N) lattice gauge theory in 2-dimensions can be considered as the statistical mechanics of a Coulomb gas on a circle in a constant electric field. The large N limit of this system is discussed and compared with exact answers for finite N. Near the fixed points of the renormalization group and especially in the critical region where one can define a continuum theory, computations in the thermodynamic limit $(N \rightarrow \infty)$ are in remarkable agreement with those for finite and small N. However, in the intermediate coupling region the thermodynamic computation, unlike the one for finite N, shows a continuous phase transition. This transition seems to be a pathology of the infinite N limit and in this simple model has no bearing on the physical continuum limit."

Chern-Simons Theory with Vector Fermion Matter

We study three dimensional conformal field theories described by U(N) Chern-Simons theory at level k coupled to massless fermions in the fundamental representation. By solving a Schwinger-Dyson equation in lightcone gauge, we compute the exact planar free energy of the theory at finite temperature on R^2 as a function of the 't Hooft coupling lambda=N/k. Employing a dimensional reduction regularization scheme, we find that the free energy vanishes at |lambda|=1; the conformal theory does not exist for |lambda|>1. We analyze the operator spectrum via the anomalous conservation relation for higher spin currents, and in particular show that the higher spin currents do not develop anomalous dimensions at leading order in 1/N. We present an integral equation whose solution in principle determines all correlators of these currents at leading order in 1/N and present explicit perturbative results for all three point functions up to two loops. We also discuss a lightcone Hamiltonian formulation of this theory where a W-infinity algebra arises. The maximally supersymmetric version of our theory is ABJ model with one gauge group taken to be U(1), demonstrating that a pure higher spin gauge theory arises as a limit of string theory.

Gauge/Gravity Duality and Some Applications

We discuss the AdS/CFT correspondence in which space-time emerges from an interacting theory of D-branes and open strings. These ideas have a historical continuity with QCD which is an interacting theory of quarks and gluons. In particular we review the classic case of D3 branes and the non-conformal D1 brane system. We outline by some illustrative examples the calculations that are enabled in a strongly coupled gauge theory by correspondence with dynamical horizons in semi-classical gravity in one higher dimension. We also discuss implications of the gauge-fluid/gravity correspondence for the information paradox of black hole physics.

Hydrodynamics of R-charged D1-branes

We study the hydrodynamic properties of strongly coupled $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory of the D1-brane at finite temperature and at a non-zero density of R-charge in the framework of gauge/gravity duality. The gravity dual description involves a charged black hole solution of an Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton system in 3 dimensions which is obtained by a consistent truncation of the spinning D1-brane in 10 dimensions. We evaluate thermal and electrical conductivity as well as the bulk viscosity as a function of the chemical potential conjugate to the R-charges of the D1-brane. We show that the ratio of bulk viscosity to entropy density is independent of the chemical potential and is equal to $1/4π$. The thermal conductivity and bulk viscosity obey a relationship similar to the Wiedemann-Franz law. We show that at the boundary of thermodynamic stability, the charge diffusion mode becomes unstable and the transport coefficients exhibit critical behaviour. Our method for evaluating the transport coefficients relies on expressing the second order differential equations in terms of a first order equation which dictates the radial evolution of the transport coefficient. The radial evolution equations can be solved exactly for the transport coefficients of our interest. We observe that transport coefficients of the D1-brane theory are related to that of the M2-brane by an overall proportionality constant which sets the dimensions.

Asymptotically free four-fermi theory in 4 dimensions at the z=3 Lifshitz-like fixed point

We show that a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio type four-fermion coupling at the z=3 Lifshitz-like fixed point in 3+1 dimensions is asymptotically free and generates a mass scale dynamically. This result is nonperturbative in the limit of a large number of fermion species. The theory is ultra-violet complete and at low energies exhibits Lorentz invariance as an emergent spacetime symmetry. Many of our results generalize to z=d in odd d spatial dimensions; z=d=1 corresponds to the Gross-Neveu model. The above mechanism of mass generation has potential applications to the fermion mass problem and to dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking. We present a scenario in which a composite Higgs field arises from a condensate of these fermions, which then couples to quarks and leptons of the standard model. Such a scenario could eliminate the need for the Higgs potential and the associated hierarchy problem. We also show that the axial anomaly formula at z=3 coincides with the usual one in the relativistic domain.

Plasma balls/kinks as solitons of large $N$ confining gauge theories

We discuss finite regions of the deconfining phase of a confining gauge theory (plasma balls/kinks) as solitons of the large $N$, long wavelength, effective Lagrangian of the thermal gauge theory expressed in terms of suitable order parameters. We consider a class of confining gauge theories whose effective Lagrangian turns out to be a generic 1 dim. unitary matrix model. The dynamics of this matrix model can be studied by an exact mapping to a non-relativistic many fermion problem on a circle. We present an approximate solution to the equations of motion which corresponds to the motion (in Euclidean time) of the Fermi surface interpolating between the phase where the fermions are uniformly distributed on the circle (confinement phase) and the phase where the fermion distribution has a gap on the circle (deconfinement phase). We later self-consistently verify that the approximation is a good one. We discuss some properties and implications of the solution including the surface tension which turns out to be positive. As a by product of our investigation we point out the problem of obtaining time dependent solutions in the collective field theory formalism due to generic shock formation.

Rolling tachyon solution of two-dimensional string theory

We consider a classical (string) field theory of $c=1$ matrix model which was developed earlier in hep-th/9207011 and subsequent papers. This is a noncommutative field theory where the noncommutativity parameter is the string coupling $g_s$. We construct a classical solution of this field theory and show that it describes the complete time history of the recently found rolling tachyon on an unstable D0 brane.

Wave Propagation in Stringy Black Hole

We further study the nonperturbative formulation of two-dimensional black holes. We find a nonlinear differential equation satisfied by the tachyon in the black hole background. We show that singularities in the tachyon field configurations are always associated with divergent semiclassical expansions and are absent in the exact theory. We also discuss how the Euclidian black hole emerges from an analytically continued fermion theory that corresponds to the right side up harmonic oscillator potential.

Microscopic Formulation of Black Holes in String Theory

In this Report we review the microscopic formulation of the five dimensional black hole of type IIB string theory in terms of the D1-D5 brane system. The emphasis here is more on the brane dynamics than on supergravity solutions. We show how the low energy brane dynamics, combined with crucial inputs from AdS/CFT correspondence, leads to a derivation of black hole thermodynamics and the rate of Hawking radiation. Our approach requires a detailed exposition of the gauge theory and conformal field theory of the D1-D5 system. We also discuss some applications of the AdS/CFT correspondence in the context of black hole formation in three dimensions by thermal transition and by collision of point particles.

D1/D5 Moduli in SCFT and Gauge Theory, and Hawking Radiation

We construct marginal operators of the orbifold SCFT corresponding to all twenty near-horizon moduli in supergravity, including operators involving twist fields which correspond to the blowing up modes. We identify the operators with the supergravity moduli in a 1-1 fashion by inventing a global SO(4) algebra in the SCFT. We analyze the gauge dynamics of the D1/D5 system relevant to the splitting $(Q_1,Q_5)\to (Q'_1,Q'_5)+ (Q''_1,Q''_5)$ with the help of a linear sigma model. We show in supergravity as well as in SCFT that the absorption cross-section for minimal scalars is the same all over the near-horizon moduli space.

Leading Large N Modification of QCD_2 on a Cylinder by Dynamical Fermions

We consider 2-dimensional QCD on a cylinder, where space is a circle. We find the ground state of the system in case of massless quarks in a $1/N$ expansion. We find that coupling to fermions nontrivially modifies the large $N$ saddle point of the gauge theory due to the phenomenon of `decompactification' of eigenvalues of the gauge field. We calculate the vacuum energy and the vacuum expectation value of the Wilson loop operator both of which show a nontrivial dependence on the number of quarks flavours at the leading order in $1/N$.

String Field Theory of Two Dimensional QCD on a Cylinder: A Realization of W-infinity Current Algebra

We consider 2-dimensional QCD on a cylinder, where space is a circle of length $L$. We formulate the theory in terms of gauge-invariant gluon operators and multiple-winding meson (open string) operators. The meson bilocal operators satisfy a $W_\infty$ current algebra. The gluon sector (closed strings) contains purely quantum mechanical degrees of freedom. The description of this sector in terms of non-relativistic fermions leads to a $W_\infty$ algebra. The spectrum of excitations of the full theory is therefore organized according to two different algebras: a wedge subalgebra of $W_\infty$ current algebra in the meson sector and a wedge subalgebra of $W_\infty$ algebra in the glueball sector. In the large $N$ limit the theory becomes semiclassical and an effective description for the gluon degrees of freedom can be obtained. We have solved the effective theory of the gluons in the small $L$ limit. We get a glueball spectrum which coincides with the `discrete states' of the (Euclidean) $c=1$ string theory. We remark on the implications of these results for (a) QCD at finite temperature and (b) string theory.

Universal Cellular Automata and Class 4

Wolfram has provided a qualitative classification of cellular automata(CA) rules according to which, there exits a class of CA rules (called Class 4) which exhibit complex pattern formation and long-lived dynamical activity (long transients). These properties of Class 4 CA's has led to the conjecture that Class 4 rules are Universal Turing machines i.e. they are bases for computational universality. We describe an embedding of a ``small'' universal Turing machine due to Minsky, into a cellular automaton rule-table. This produces a collection of $(k=18,r=1)$ cellular automata, all of which are computationally universal. However, we observe that these rules are distributed amongst the various Wolfram classes. More precisely, we show that the identification of the Wolfram class depends crucially on the set of initial conditions used to simulate the given CA. This work, among others, indicates that a description of complex systems and information dynamics may need a new framework for non-equilibrium statistical mechanics.

$W_\infty$ coherent states and path-integral derivation of bosonization of non-relativistic fermions in one dimension

We complete the proof of bosonization of noninteracting nonrelativistic fermions in one space dimension by deriving the bosonized action using $W_\infty$ coherent states in the fermion path-integral. This action was earlier derived by us using the method of coadjoint orbits. We also discuss the classical limit of the bosonized theory and indicate the precise nature of the truncation of the full theory that leads to the collective field theory.

A Time-Dependent Classical Solution of C=1 String Field Theory and Non-Perturbative Effects

We describe a real-time classical solution of $c=1$ string field theory written in terms of the phase space density, $u(p,q,t)$, of the equivalent fermion theory. The solution corresponds to tunnelling of a single fermion above the filled fermi sea and leads to amplitudes that go as $\exp(- C/ \gst)$. We discuss how one can use this technique to describe non-perturbative effects in the Marinari-Parisi model. We also discuss implications of this type of solution for the two-dimensional black hole.

Classical Fermi Fluid and Geometric Action for $c=1$

We formulate the $c=1$ matrix model as a quantum fluid and discuss its classical limit in detail, emphasizing the $\hbar$ corrections. We view the fermi fluid profiles as elements of \winf-coadjoint orbit and write down a geometric action for the classical phase space. In the specific representation of fluid profiles as `strings' the action is written in a four-dimensional form in terms of gauge fields built out of the embedding of the `string' in the phase plane. We show that the collective field action can be derived from the above action provided one restricts to quadratic fluid profiles and ignores the dynamics of their `turning points'.

Non-relativistic Fermions, Coadjoint Orbits of \winf\ and String Field Theory at $c=1$

We apply the method of coadjoint orbits of \winf-algebra to the problem of non-relativistic fermions in one dimension. This leads to a geometric formulation of the quantum theory in terms of the quantum phase space distribution of the fermi fluid. The action has an infinite series expansion in the string coupling, which to leading order reduces to the previously discussed geometric action for the classical fermi fluid based on the group $w_\infty$ of area-preserving diffeomorphisms. We briefly discuss the strong coupling limit of the string theory which, unlike the weak coupling regime, does not seem to admit of a two dimensional space-time picture. Our methods are equally applicable to interacting fermions in one dimension.

Gauge Theory Formulation of the $c=1$ Matrix Model: Symmetries and Discrete States

We present a non-relativistic fermionic field theory in 2-dimensions coupled to external gauge fields. The singlet sector of the $c=1$ matrix model corresponds to a specific external gauge field. The gauge theory is one-dimensional (time) and the space coordinate is treated as a group index. The generators of the gauge algebra are polynomials in the single particle momentum and position operators and they form the group $W^{(+)}_{1+\infty}$. There are corresponding Ward identities and residual gauge transformations that leave the external gauge fields invariant. We discuss the realization of these residual symmetries in the Minkowski time theory and conclude that the symmetries generated by the polynomial basis are not realized. We motivate and present an analytic continuation of the model which realises the group of residual symmetries. We consider the classical limit of this theory and make the correspondence with the discrete states of the $c=1$ (Euclidean time) Liouville theory. We explain the appearance of the $SL(2)$ structure in $W^{(+)}_{1+\infty}$. We also present all the Euclidean classical solutions and the classical action in the classical phase space. A possible relation of this theory to the $N=2$ string theory and also self-dual Einstein gravity in 4-dimensions is pointed out.
