Cosmological Cutting Rules from Flat-Space Unitarity via Dressing

Using cosmological dressing rules, we uplift flat-space unitarity cuts to discontinuity relations for dS/EAdS observables. In this representation, Cutkosky delta functions map directly to "Disc" operations in the exchanged energy variable. This provides a transparent diagram by diagram origin of cosmological cutting rules. We illustrate this with explicit examples at tree level and one loop for conformally coupled scalars.

Anyonic correlation functions in Chern-Simons matter theories

Using a novel relation between the parity even and odd parts of a correlator, we show that the 3-point function of conserved or weakly broken currents in 3d CFT can be obtained from just the free fermion (FF) or the free boson (FB) theory. In the special case of large $N$ Chern-Simons matter theories, we obtain the correlator in terms of a coupling constant dependent ``anyonic phase" factor. This anyonic phase factor was previously obtained in the $2\rightarrow 2$ exact S-matrix result and is consistent with strong-weak duality. By varying the coupling constant the CFT correlator interpolates nicely between the same in the FF and FB theories.

Constraining momentum space CFT correlators with consistent position space OPE limit and the collider bound

Consistency with position space OPE limit requires momentum space CFT correlators to have only total energy singularity. We show that this requirement gives a simple proof of the known result that the parity-odd structure cannot exist for three-point correlators of exactly conserved currents with spins $s_i,s_j,s_k$, when triangle inequality $s_i\le s_j+s_k$ is violated. We also show that even for parity even correlation functions the properties are different inside and outside the triangle inequality. It was previously shown that if we allow for weakly broken higher spin symmetry, parity-odd correlators can exist even when triangle inequality is violated. In this paper we establish a relation between non-conservation Ward-Takahashi (WT) identities for weakly broken currents using known WT identities for exactly conserved currents. This allows us to calculate the parity violating results outside the triangle inequality using parity-even free bosonic and free fermionic results. In general, there is one parity-odd structure and two parity-even structures for three-point functions. It can be shown that the coefficient of one of the parity-even and odd parts can be combined into a complex parameter $c$ when correlators are expressed in spinor-helicity variables. When this complex parameter takes real value $c=\pm 1$ it corresponds to either the free boson or free fermion theory. When $c$ is a pure phase, it corresponds to Chern-Simons matter theories. Furthermore, re-expressing known results for conformal collider bounds we see that $\lvert c\rvert\le 1$ for generic 3d CFTs and $\lvert c\rvert\le f(Δ_{gap})$ for holographic CFTs.

Quantum Regression theorem for multi-time correlators : A detailed analysis in the Heisenberg Picture

Quantum regression theorem is a very useful result in open quantum system and extensively used for computing multi-point correlation functions. Traditionally it is derived for two-time correlators in the Markovian limit employing the Schrödinger picture. In this paper we make use of the Heisenberg picture to derive quantum regression theorems for multi-time correlation functions which in the special limit reduce to the well known two-time regression theorem. For multi-time correlation function we find that the regression theorem takes the same form as it takes for two-time correlation function with a mild restriction that one of the times should be greater than all the other time variables. Interestingly, the Heisenberg picture also allows us to derive analogue of regression theorem for out-of-time-ordered correlators (OTOCs). We further extend our study for the case of non-Markovian dynamics and report the modifications to the standard quantum regression theorem. We illustrate all of the above results using the paradigmatic dissipative spin-boson model.

Relation between parity-even and parity-odd CFT correlation functions in three dimensions

In this paper we relate the parity-odd part of two and three point correlation functions in theories with exactly conserved or weakly broken higher spin symmetries to the parity-even part which can be computed from free theories. We also comment on higher point functions. The well known connection of CFT correlation functions with de-Sitter amplitudes in one higher dimension implies a relation between parity-even and parity-odd amplitudes calculated using non-minimal interactions such as ${\mathcal W}^3$ and ${\mathcal W}^2 {\widetilde {\mathcal W}}$. In the flat-space limit this implies a relation between parity-even and parity-odd parts of flat-space scattering amplitudes.

Correlation functions in ${\cal N}=2$ Supersymmetric vector matter Chern-Simons theory

We compute the two, three point function of the opearators in the spin zero multiplet of ${\cal N}=2$ Supersymmetric vector matter Chern-Simons theory at large $N$ and at all orders of 't Hooft coupling by solving the Schwinger-Dyson equation. Schwinger-Dyson method to compute four point function becomes extremely complicated and hence we use bootstrap method to solve for four point function of scaler operator $J_0^{f}=\barψψ$ and $J_0^{b}=\barϕϕ$. Interestingly, due to the fact that $\langle J_0^{f}J_0^{f}J_0^{b} \rangle$ is a contact term, the four point function of $ J_0^{f}$ operator looks like that of free theory up to overall coupling constant dependent factors and up to some bulk AdS contact terms. On the other hand the $J_0^{b}$ four-point function receives an additional contribution compared to the free theory expression due to the $J_0^{f}$ exchange. Interestingly, double discontinuity of this single trace operator $J_0^{f}$ vanishes and hence it only contributes to AdS-contact term.

The large $N$ phase diagram of ${\cal N}=2$ $SU(N)$ Chern-Simons theory with one fundamental chiral multiplet

We study the theory of a single fundamental fermion and boson coupled to Chern-Simons theory at leading order in the large $N$ limit. Utilizing recent progress in understanding the Higgsed phase in Chern-Simons-Matter theories, we compute the quantum effective potential that is exact to all orders in the 't Hooft coupling for the lightest scalar operator of this theory at finite temperature. Specializing to the zero temperature limit we use this potential to determine the phase diagram of the large $N$ ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric theory with this field content. This intricate two dimensional phase diagram has four topological phases that are separated by lines of first and second order phase transitions and includes special conformal points at which the infrared dynamics is governed by Chern-Simons theory coupled respectively to free bosons, Gross-Neveu fermions, and to a theory of Wilson-Fisher bosons plus free fermions. We also describe the vacuum structure of the most general ${\cal N} = 1$ supersymmetric theory with one fundamental boson and one fundamental fermion coupled to an $SU(N)$ Chern-Simons gauge field, at arbitrary values of the 't Hooft coupling.

Causality Constraints in Conformal Field Theory

Causality places nontrivial constraints on QFT in Lorentzian signature, for example fixing the signs of certain terms in the low energy Lagrangian. In d-dimensional conformal field theory, we show how such constraints are encoded in crossing symmetry of Euclidean correlators, and derive analogous constraints directly from the conformal bootstrap (analytically). The bootstrap setup is a Lorentzian four-point function corresponding to propagation through a shockwave. Crossing symmetry fixes the signs of certain log terms that appear in the conformal block expansion, which constrains the interactions of low-lying operators. As an application, we use the bootstrap to rederive the well known sign constraint on the $(\partialϕ)^4$ coupling in effective field theory, from a dual CFT. We also find constraints on theories with higher spin conserved currents. Our analysis is restricted to scalar correlators, but we argue that similar methods should also impose nontrivial constraints on the interactions of spinning operators.

A Strongly Coupled Anisotropic Fluid From Dilaton Driven Holography

We consider a system consisting of $5$ dimensional gravity with a negative cosmological constant coupled to a massless scalar, the dilaton. We construct a black brane solution which arises when the dilaton satisfies linearly varying boundary conditions in the asymptotically $AdS_5$ region. The geometry of this black brane breaks rotational symmetry while preserving translational invariance and corresponds to an anisotropic phase of the system. Close to extremality, where the anisotropy is big compared to the temperature, some components of the viscosity tensor become parametrically small compared to the entropy density. We study the quasi normal modes in considerable detail and find no instability close to extremality. We also obtain the equations for fluid mechanics for an anisotropic driven system in general, working upto first order in the derivative expansion for the stress tensor, and identify additional transport coefficients which appear in the constitutive relation. For the fluid of interest we find that the parametrically small viscosity can result in a very small force of friction, when the fluid is enclosed between appropriately oriented parallel plates moving with a relative velocity.

Unitarity, Crossing Symmetry and Duality in the scattering of ${\cal N}=1$ Susy Matter Chern-Simons theories

We study the most general renormalizable ${\cal N}=1$ $U(N)$ Chern-Simons gauge theory coupled to a single (generically massive) fundamental matter multiplet. At leading order in the 't Hooft large $N$ limit we present computations and conjectures for the $2 \times 2$ $S$ matrix in these theories; our results apply at all orders in the 't Hooft coupling and the matter self interaction. Our $S$ matrices are in perfect agreement with the recently conjectured strong weak coupling self duality of this class of theories. The consistency of our results with unitarity requires a modification of the usual rules of crossing symmetry in precisely the manner anticipated in arXiv:1404.6373, lending substantial support to the conjectures of that paper. In a certain range of coupling constants our $S$ matrices have a pole whose mass vanishes on a self dual codimension one surface in the space of couplings.

Unitarity, Crossing Symmetry and Duality of the S-matrix in large N Chern-Simons theories with fundamental matter

We present explicit computations and conjectures for $2 \to 2$ scattering matrices in large $N$ {\it $U(N)$} Chern-Simons theories coupled to fundamental bosonic or fermionic matter to all orders in the 't Hooft coupling expansion. The bosonic and fermionic S-matrices map to each other under the recently conjectured Bose-Fermi duality after a level-rank transposition. The S-matrices presented in this paper may be regarded as relativistic generalization of Aharonov-Bohm scattering. They have unusual structural features: they include a non analytic piece localized on forward scattering, and obey modified crossing symmetry rules. We conjecture that these unusual features are properties of S-matrices in all Chern-Simons matter theories. The S-matrix in one of the exchange channels in our paper has an anyonic character; the parameter map of the conjectured Bose-Fermi duality may be derived by equating the anyonic phase in the bosonic and fermionic theories.

Chern Simons duality with a fundamental boson and fermion

We compute the thermal free energy for all renormalizable Chern Simon theories coupled to a single fundamental bosonic and fermionic field in the 't Hooft large N limit. We use our results to conjecture a strong weak coupling duality invariance for this class of theories. Our conjectured duality reduces to Giveon Kutasov duality when restricted to {\cal N}=2 supersymmetric theories and to an earlier conjectured bosonization duality in an appropriate decoupling limit. Consequently the bosonization duality may be regarded as a deformation of Giveon Kutasov duality, suggesting that it is true even at large but finite N.

Phases of large $N$ vector Chern-Simons theories on $S^2 \times S^1$

We study the thermal partition function of level $k$ U(N) Chern-Simons theories on $S^2$ interacting with matter in the fundamental representation. We work in the 't Hooft limit, $N,k\to\infty$, with $λ= N/k$ and $\frac{T^2 V_{2}}{N}$ held fixed where $T$ is the temperature and $V_{2}$ the volume of the sphere. An effective action proposed in arXiv:1211.4843 relates the partition function to the expectation value of a `potential' function of the $S^1$ holonomy in pure Chern-Simons theory; in several examples we compute the holonomy potential as a function of $λ$. We use level rank duality of pure Chern-Simons theory to demonstrate the equality of thermal partition functions of previously conjectured dual pairs of theories as a function of the temperature. We reduce the partition function to a matrix integral over holonomies. The summation over flux sectors quantizes the eigenvalues of this matrix in units of ${2π\over k}$ and the eigenvalue density of the holonomy matrix is bounded from above by $\frac{1}{2 πλ}$. The corresponding matrix integrals generically undergo two phase transitions as a function of temperature. For several Chern-Simons matter theories we are able to exactly solve the relevant matrix models in the low temperature phase, and determine the phase transition temperature as a function of $λ$. At low temperatures our partition function smoothly matches onto the $N$ and $λ$ independent free energy of a gas of non renormalized multi trace operators. We also find an exact solution to a simple toy matrix model; the large $N$ Gross-Witten-Wadia matrix integral subject to an upper bound on eigenvalue density.

Supersymmetric Chern-Simons Theories with Vector Matter

In this paper we discuss SU(N) Chern-Simons theories at level k with both fermionic and bosonic vector matter. In particular we present an exact calculation of the free energy of the N=2 supersymmetric model (with one chiral field) for all values of the 't Hooft coupling in the large N limit. This is done by using a generalization of the standard Hubbard-Stratanovich method because the SUSY model contains higher order polynomial interactions.

Anomalous charged fluids in 1+1d from equilibrium partition function

In this note we explore the constraints imposed by the existence of equilibrium partition on parity violating charged fluids in 1+1 dimensions at zero derivative order. We write the equilibrium partition function consistent with 1+1 dimensional CPT invariance and which reproduces the correct anomaly in the charge current. The constraints on constitutive relations obtained in this way matches precisely with those obtained using the second law of thermodynamics.

Constraints on Anomalous Fluid in Arbitrary Dimensions

Using the techniques developed in arxiv: 1203.3544 we compute the universal part of the equilibrium partition function characteristic of a theory with multiple abelian U(1) anomalies in arbitrary even spacetime dimensions. This contribution is closely linked to the universal anomaly induced transport coefficients in hydrodynamics which have been studied before using entropy techniques. Equilibrium partition function provides an alternate and a microscopically more transparent way to derive the constraints on these transport coefficients. We re-derive this way all the known results on these transport coefficients including their polynomial structure which has recently been conjectured to be linked to the anomaly polynomial of the theory. Further we link the local description of anomaly induced transport in terms of a Gibbs current to the more global description in terms of the partition function .

Constraints on Fluid Dynamics from Equilibrium Partition Functions

We study the thermal partition function of quantum field theories on arbitrary stationary background spacetime, and with arbitrary stationary background gauge fields, in the long wavelength expansion. We demonstrate that the equations of relativistic hydrodynamics are significantly constrained by the requirement of consistency with any partition function. In examples at low orders in the derivative expansion we demonstrate that these constraints coincide precisely with the equalities between hydrodynamical transport coefficients that follow from the local form of the second law of thermodynamics. In particular we recover the results of Son and Surowka on the chiral magnetic and chiral vorticity flows, starting from a local partition function that manifestly reproduces the field theory anomaly, without making any reference to an entropy current. We conjecture that the relations between transport coefficients that follow from the second law of thermodynamics agree to all orders in the derivative expansion with the constraints described in this paper.

Constraints on Superfluid Hydrodynamics from Equilibrium Partition Functions

Following up on recent work in the context of ordinary fluids, we study the equilibrium partition function of a 3+1 dimensional superfluid on an arbitrary stationary background spacetime, and with arbitrary stationary background gauge fields, in the long wavelength expansion. We argue that this partition function is generated by a 3 dimensional Euclidean effective action for the massless Goldstone field. We parameterize the general form of this action at first order in the derivative expansion. We demonstrate that the constitutive relations of relativistic superfluid hydrodynamics are significantly constrained by the requirement of consistency with such an effective action. At first order in the derivative expansion we demonstrate that the resultant constraints on constitutive relations coincide precisely with the equalities between hydrodynamical transport coefficients recently derived from the second law of thermodynamics.

Shear sum rules at finite chemical potential

We derive sum rules which constrain the spectral density corresponding to the retarded propagator of the T_{xy} component of the stress tensor for three gravitational duals. The shear sum rule is obtained for the gravitational dual of the N=4 Yang-Mills, theory of the M2-branes and M5-branes all at finite chemical potential. We show that at finite chemical potential there are additional terms in the sum rule which involve the chemical potential. These modifications are shown to be due to the presence of scalars in the operator product expansion of the stress tensor which have non-trivial vacuum expectation values at finite chemical potential.

Proof of universality of electrical conductivity at finite chemical potential

It was proposed in arXiv:1008.2944 that, for certain gauge theories with gravity duals, electrical conductivity at finite chemical potential is universal. Here we provide a general proof that, when matter stress tensor satisfies a compact constraint, electrical conductivity is universal. We further elaborate our result with several conformal as well as non-conformal gauge theories. We also discuss how boundary conductivity and universal conductivity of stretched horizon are related.

Holographic electrical and thermal conductivity in strongly coupled gauge theory with multiple chemical potentials

We study transport coefficients of strongly coupled gauge theory in the presence of multiple chemical potential which are dual to rotating D3, M2 and M5 brane. Using the general form of the perturbation equations, we compute DC-electrical conductivity at finite temperature as well as at zero temperature. We also study thermal conductivity for the same class of black holes and show that thermal conductivity and viscosity obeys Wiedemann-Franz like law even in the presence of multiple chemical potential.

Universal properties of thermal and electrical conductivity of gauge theory plasmas from holography

We propose that for conformal field theories admitting gravity duals, the thermal conductivity is fixed by the central charges in a universal manner. Though we do not have a proof as yet, we have checked our proposal against several examples. This proposal, if correct, allows us to express electrical conductivity in terms of thermodynamical quantities even in the presence of chemical potential.

Universal thermal and electrical conductivity from holography

It is known from earlier work of Iqbal, Liu (arXiv:0809.3808) that the boundary transport coefficients such as electrical conductivity (at vanishing chemical potential), shear viscosity etc. at low frequency and finite temperature can be expressed in terms of geometrical quantities evaluated at the horizon. In the case of electrical conductivity, at zero chemical potential gauge field fluctuation and metric fluctuation decouples, resulting in a trivial flow from horizon to boundary. In the presence of chemical potential, the story becomes complicated due to the fact that gauge field and metric fluctuation can no longer be decoupled. This results in a nontrivial flow from horizon to boundary. Though horizon conductivity can be expressed in terms of geometrical quantities evaluated at the horizon, there exist no such neat result for electrical conductivity at the boundary. In this paper we propose an expression for boundary conductivity expressed in terms of geometrical quantities evaluated at the horizon and thermodynamical quantities. We also consider the theory at finite cutoff outside the horizon (arXiv:1006.1902) and give an expression for cutoff dependent electrical conductivity, which interpolates smoothly between horizon conductivity and boundary conductivity . Using the results about the electrical conductivity we gain much insight into the universality of thermal conductivity to viscosity ratio proposed in arXiv:0912.2719.
