Holographic dual to charged SYK from 3D Gravity and Chern-Simons

In this paper, we obtain a bulk dual to SYK model, including SYK model with $U(1)$ charge, by Kaluza-Klein (KK) reduction from three dimensions. We show that KK reduction of the 3D Einstein action plus its boundary term gives the Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) model in 2D with the appropriate 1D boundary term. The size of the KK radius gets identified with the value of the dilaton in the resulting near-AdS$_2$ geometry. In presence of U(1) charge, the 3D model additionally includes a $U(1)$ Chern-Simons (CS) action. In order to describe a boundary theory with non-zero chemical potential, we also introduce a coupling between CS gauge field and bulk gravity. The 3D CS action plus the new coupling term with appropriate boundary terms reduce in two dimensions to a BF-type action plus a source term and boundary terms. The KK reduced 2D theory represents the soft sector of the charged SYK model. The pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone modes of combined $\textit{Diff} /\mathbb{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ and $U(1)_{\rm local}/U(1)$ transformations are represented by combined large diffeomorphisms and large gauge transformations. The effective action of the former is reproduced by the action cost of the latter in the bulk dual, after appropriate identification of parameters. We compute chaotic correlators from the bulk and reproduce the result that the contribution from the "boundary photons" corresponds to zero Liapunov exponent.

Thermalization in 2D critical quench and UV/IR mixing

We consider quantum quenches in models of free scalars and fermions with a generic time-dependent mass $m(t)$ that goes from $m_0$ to zero. We prove that, as anticipated in MSS \cite{Mandal:2015jla}, the post-quench dynamics can be described in terms of a state of the generalized Calabrese-Cardy form $|ψ\rangle$= $\exp[-κ_2 H -\sum_{n>2}^\infty κ_n W_n]| \hbox{Bd} \rangle$. The $W_n$ ($n=2,3,...$, $W_2=H$) here represent the conserved $W_\infty$ charges and $| \hbox{Bd} \rangle$ represents a conformal boundary state. Our result holds irrespective of whether the pre-quench state is a ground state or a squeezed state, and is proved without recourse to perturbation expansion in the $κ_n$'s as in MSS. We compute exact time-dependent correlators for some specific quench protocols $m(t)$. The correlators explicitly show thermalization to a generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE), with inverse temperature $β= 4κ_2$, and chemical potentials $μ_n=4κ_n$. In case the pre-quench state is a ground state, it is possible to retrieve the exact quench protocol $m(t)$ from the final GGE, by an application of inverse scattering techniques. Another notable result, which we interpret as a UV/IR mixing, is that the long distance and long time (IR) behaviour of some correlators depends crucially on all $κ_n$'s, although they are highly irrelevant couplings in the usual RG parlance. This indicates subtleties in RG arguments when applied to non-equilibrium dynamics.

Gravitational collapse in SYK models and Choptuik-like phenomenon

SYK model is a quantum mechanical model of fermions which is solvable at strong coupling and plays an important role as perhaps the simplest holographic model of quantum gravity and black holes. The present work considers a deformed SYK model and a sudden quantum quench in the deformation parameter. The system, as in the undeformed case, permits a low energy description in terms of pseudo Nambu Goldstone modes. The bulk dual of such a system represents a gravitational collapse, which is characterized by a bulk matter stress tensor whose value near the boundary shows a sudden jump at the time of the quench. The resulting gravitational collapse forms a black hole only if the deformation parameter $Δε$ exceeds a certain critical value $Δε_c$ and forms a horizonless geometry otherwise. In case a black hole does form, the resulting Hawking temperature is given by a fractional power $T_{bh} \propto (Δε- Δε_c)^{1/2}$, which is reminiscent of the `Choptuik phenomenon' of critical gravitational collapse.

Finite size effect on dynamical entanglement entropy: CFT and holography

Time-dependent entanglement entropy (EE) is computed for a single interval in two-dimensional conformal theories from a quenched initial state in the presence of spatial boundaries. The EE is found to be periodic in time with periodicity equal to the system size $L$. For large enough $L$, the EE shows a rise to a thermal value (characterized by a temperature $1/β$ determined by the initial state), followed by periodic returns to the original value. This works irrespective of whether the conformal field theory (CFT) is rational or irrational. For conformal field theories with a holographic dual, the large $c$ limit plays an essential role in ensuring that the EE computed from the CFT is universal (independent of the details of the CFT and of boundary conditions) and is exactly matched by the holographic EE. The dual geometry is computed and it interpolates between a BTZ black hole at large $L$ and global AdS at large $β$.

Thermalization with chemical potentials, and higher spin black holes

We study the long time behaviour of local observables following a quantum quench in 1+1 dimensional conformal field theories possessing additional conserved charges besides the energy. We show that the expectation value of an arbitrary string of {\it local} observables supported on a finite interval exponentially approaches an equilibrium value. The equilibrium is characterized by a temperature and chemical potentials defined in terms of the quenched state. For an infinite number of commuting conserved charges, the equilibrium ensemble is a generalized Gibbs ensemble (GGE). We compute the thermalization rate in a systematic perturbation in the chemical potentials, using a new technique to sum over an infinite number of Feynman diagrams. The above technique also allows us to compute relaxation times for thermal Green's functions in the presence of an arbitrary number of chemical potentials. In the context of a higher spin (hs[λ]) holography, the partition function of the final equilibrium GGE is known to agree with that of a higher spin black hole. The thermalization rate from the CFT computed in our paper agrees with the quasinormal frequency of a scalar field in this black hole.

Thermodynamics of QCD from Sakai-Sugimoto Model

Till date, the only consistent description of the deconfinement phase of the Sakai-Sugimoto model appears to be provided by the analysis of [1] (arXiv:1107.4048). The current version of the analysis, however, has a subtlety regarding the monodromy of quarks around the Euclidean time circle. In this note, we revisit and resolve this issue by considering the effect of an imaginary baryon chemical potential on quark monodromies. With this ingredient, the proposal of [1] for investigating finite temperature QCD using holography is firmly established. Additionally, our technique allows a holographic computation of the free energy as a function of the imaginary chemical potential in the deconfinement phase; we show that our result agrees with the corresponding formula obtained from perturbative QCD, namely the Roberge-Weiss potential.

The inside outs of AdS(3)/CFT(2): Exact AdS wormholes with entangled CFT duals

We present the complete family of solutions of 3D gravity (Lambda<0) with two asymptotically AdS exterior regions. The solutions are constructed from data at the two boundaries, which correspond to two independent and arbitrary stress tensors T_R, \bar T_R, and T_L, \bar T_L. The two exteriors are smoothly joined on to an interior region through a regular horizon. We find CFT duals of these geometries which are entangled states of two CFT's. We compute correlators between general operators at the two boundaries and find perfect agreement between CFT and bulk calculations. We calculate and match the CFT entanglement entropy (EE) with the holographic EE which involves geodesics passing through the wormhole. We also compute a holographic, non-equilibrium entropy for the CFT using properties of the regular horizon. The construction of the bulk solutions here uses an exact version of Brown-Henneaux type diffeomorphisms which are asymptotically nontrivial and transform the CFT states by two independent unitary operators on the two sides. Our solutions provide an infinite family of explicit examples of the ER=EPR relation of Maldacena and Susskind [arXiv:1306.0533].

Double Trace Flows and Holographic RG in dS/CFT correspondence

If there is a dS/CFT correspondence, time evolution in the bulk should translate to RG flows in the dual euclidean field theory. Consequently, although the dual field is expected to be non-unitary, its RG flows will carry an imprint of the unitary time evolution in the bulk. In this note we examine the prediction of holographic RG in de Sitter space for the flow of double and triple trace couplings in any proposed dual. We show quite generally that the correct form of the field theory beta functions for the double trace couplings is obtained from holography, provided one identifies the scale of the field theory with (i|T|) where T is the `time' in conformal coordinates. For dS(4), we find that with an appropriate choice of operator normalization, it is possible to have real n-point correlation functions as well as beta functions with real coefficients. This choice leads to an RG flow with an IR fixed point at negative coupling unlike in a unitary theory where the IR fixed point is at positive coupling. The proposed correspondence of Sp(N) vector models with de Sitter Vasiliev gravity provides a specific example of such a phenomenon. For dS(d+1) with even d, however, we find that no choice of operator normalization exists which ensures reality of coefficients of the beta-functions as well as absence of n-dependent phases for various n-point functions, as long as one assumes real coupling constants in the bulk Lagrangian.

Dynamical entanglement entropy with angular momentum and U(1) charge

We consider time-dependent entanglement entropy (EE) for a 1+1 dimensional CFT in the presence of angular momentum and U(1) charge. The EE saturates, irrespective of the initial state, to the grand canonical entropy after a time large compared with the length of the entangling interval. We reproduce the CFT results from an AdS dual consisting of a spinning BTZ black hole and a flat U(1) connection. The apparent discrepancy that the holographic EE does not a priori depend on the U(1) charge while the CFT EE does, is resolved by the charge-dependent shift between the bulk and boundary stress tensors. We show that for small entangling intervals, the entanglement entropy obeys the first law of thermodynamics, as conjectured recently. The saturation of the EE in the field theory is shown to follow from a version of quantum ergodicity; the derivation indicates that it should hold for conformal as well as massive theories in any number of dimensions.

Quantum quench in matrix models: Dynamical phase transitions, Selective equilibration and the Generalized Gibbs Ensemble

Quantum quench dynamics is considered in a one dimensional unitary matrix model with a single trace potential. This model is integrable and has been studied in the context of non-critical string theory. We find dynamical phase transitions, and study the role of the quantum critical point. In course of the time evolutions, we find evidence of selective equilibration for a certain class of observables. The equilibrium is governed by the Generalized Gibbs Ensemble (GGE) and differs from the standard Gibbs ensemble. We compute the production of entropy which is O(N) for large N matrices. An important feature of the equilibration is the appearance of an energy cascade, reminiscent of the Richardson cascade in turbulence, where we find flow of energy from initial long wavelength modes to progressively shorter wavelength excitations. We discuss possible implication of the equilibration and of GGE in string theories and higher spin theories. In another related study, we compute time evolutions in a double trace unitary matrix model, which arises as an effective theory of D2 branes in IIA string theory in the confinement phase. We find similar equilibrations and dynamical transitions in this matrix model. The dynamical transitions are related to Gregory-Laflamme transitions in string theory and are potentially connected with the issue of appearance of naked singularities.

Gregory-Laflamme as the confinement/deconfinement transition in holographic QCD

We discuss the phase structure of N D4 branes wrapped on a temporal (Euclidean) and a spatial circle, in terms of the near-horizon AdS geometries. This system has been studied previously to understand four dimensional pure SU(N) Yang-Mills theory (YM4) through holography. In the usual treatment of the subject, the phase transition between the AdS soliton and the black D4 brane is interpreted as the strong coupling continuation of the confinement/deconfinement transition in YM4. We show that this interpretation is not valid, since the black D4 brane and the deconfinement phase of YM4 have different realizations of the Z_N centre symmetry and cannot be identified. We propose an alternative gravity dual of the confinement/deconfinement transition in terms of a Gregory-Laflamme transition of the AdS soliton in the IIB frame, where the strong coupling continuation of the deconfinement phase of YM4 is a localized D3 soliton. Our proposal offers a new explanation of several aspects of the thermodynamics of holographic QCD. As an example, we show a new mechanism of chiral symmetry restoration in the Sakai-Sugimoto model. The issues discussed in this paper pertain to gravity duals of non-supersymmetric gauge theories in general.

What is the gravity dual of the confinement/deconfinement transition in holographic QCD?

We study the gravity dual of four dimensional pure Yang-Mills theory through D4 branes, as proposed by Witten (holographic QCD). In this holographic QCD, it has been widely believed that the confinement phase in the pure Yang-Mills theory corresponds to the AdS D4 soliton in gravity and the deconfinement phase corresponds to the black D4 brane. We inspect this conjecture carefully and show that the correspondence between the black D4 brane and the deconfinement phase is not correct. Instead, by using a slightly different set up, we find an alternative gravity solution called "localized soliton", which would be properly related to the deconfinement phase. In this case, the confinement/deconfinement transition is realized as a Gregory-Laflamme type transition. We find that our proposal naturally explains several known properties of QCD.

Holographic Wilsonian flows and emergent fermions in extremal charged black holes

We study holographic Wilsonian RG in a general class of asymptotically AdS backgrounds with a U(1) gauge field. We consider free charged Dirac fermions in such a background, and integrate them up to an intermediate radial distance, yielding an equivalent low energy dual field theory. The new ingredient, compared to scalars, involves a `generalized' basis of coherent states which labels a particular half of the fermion components as coordinates or momenta, depending on the choice of quantization (standard or alternative). We apply this technology to explicitly compute RG flows of charged fermionic operators and their composites (double trace operators) in field theories dual to (a) pure AdS and (b) extremal charged black hole geometries. The flow diagrams and fixed points are determined explicitly. In the case of the extremal black hole, the RG flows connect two fixed points at the UV AdS boundary to two fixed points at the IR AdS_2 region. The double trace flow is shown, both numerically and analytically, to develop a pole singularity in the AdS_2 region at low frequency and near the Fermi momentum, which can be traced to the appearance of massless fermion modes on the low energy cut-off surface. The low energy field theory action we derive exactly agrees with the semi-holographic action proposed by Faulkner and Polchinski in arXiv:1001.5049 [hep-th]. In terms of field theory, the holographic version of Wilsonian RG leads to a quantum theory with random sources. In the extremal black hole background the random sources become `light' in the AdS_2 region near the Fermi surface and emerge as new dynamical degrees of freedom.

Phases of a two dimensional large N gauge theory on a torus

We consider two-dimensional large N gauge theory with D adjoint scalars on a torus, which is obtained from a D+2 dimensional pure Yang-Mills theory on T^{D+2} with D small radii. The two dimensional model has various phases characterized by the holonomy of the gauge field around non-contractible cycles of the 2-torus. We determine the phase boundaries and derive the order of the phase transitions using a method, developed in an earlier work (arxiv:0910.4526), which is nonperturbative in the 'tHooft coupling and uses a 1/D expansion. We embed our phase diagram in the more extensive phase structure of the D+2 dimensional Yang-Mills theory and match with the picture of a cascade of phase transitions found earlier in lattice calculations (arxiv:0710.0098). We also propose a dual gravity system based on a Scherk-Schwarz compactification of a D2 brane wrapped on a 3-torus and find a phase structure which is similar to the phase diagram found in the gauge theory calculation.

Phases of one dimensional large N gauge theory in a 1/D expansion

We consider large N Yang Mills theory with D adjoint scalar fields in d dimensions for d=0 or 1. We show the existence of a non-trivial saddle point of the functional integral at large D which is characterized by a mass gap for the adjoint scalars. We integrate out the adjoint scalars in a 1/D expansion around the saddle point. In case of one dimension which is regarded as a circle, this procedure leads to an effective action for the Wilson line. We find an analogue of the confinement/deconfinement transition which consists of a second order phase transition from a uniform to a non-uniform eigenvalue distribution of the Wilson line, closely followed by a Gross-Witten-Wadia transition where a gap develops in the eigenvalue distribution. The phase transition can be regarded as a continuation of a Gregory-Laflamme transition. Our methods involve large values of the dimensionless 'tHooft coupling. The analysis in this paper is quantitatively supported by earlier numerical work for D=9.

Asymptotically free four-fermi theory in 4 dimensions at the z=3 Lifshitz-like fixed point

We show that a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio type four-fermion coupling at the z=3 Lifshitz-like fixed point in 3+1 dimensions is asymptotically free and generates a mass scale dynamically. This result is nonperturbative in the limit of a large number of fermion species. The theory is ultra-violet complete and at low energies exhibits Lorentz invariance as an emergent spacetime symmetry. Many of our results generalize to z=d in odd d spatial dimensions; z=d=1 corresponds to the Gross-Neveu model. The above mechanism of mass generation has potential applications to the fermion mass problem and to dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking. We present a scenario in which a composite Higgs field arises from a condensate of these fermions, which then couples to quarks and leptons of the standard model. Such a scenario could eliminate the need for the Higgs potential and the associated hierarchy problem. We also show that the axial anomaly formula at z=3 coincides with the usual one in the relativistic domain.

Renormalization group flows in a Lifshitz-like four fermi model

We study renormalization group flows in the Lifshitz-like $N$-flavour four fermi model discussed in 0905.2928. In the large-$N$ limit, a nontrivial flow occurs in only one of all possible marginal couplings and one relevant coupling, which provides the scale for Lorentz invariance violations. We discuss in detail the phase diagram and RG flows in the space of couplings, which includes the Lifshitz fixed point, the free field fixed point and a new fixed point characterized by $z=1$ scaling and a violation of Lorentz invariance, which cannot be tuned away by adjusting a parameter. In the broken symmetry phase, the model flows from the $z=3$ Lifshitz-like fixed point in the ultraviolet to this new fixed point in the infrared. However, in a modified version of the present model, which has an effective ultraviolet cut-off much smaller than the Lorentz invariance violating scale, the infrared behaviour is governed by an approximately Lorentz invariant theory, similar to the low energy limit of the usual relativistic Nambu$-$Jona-Lasinio model. Such a modified model could be realized by a supersymmetric version of the present model.

Counting 1/8-BPS Dual-Giants

We count 1/8-BPS states in type IIB string theory on AdS_5 x S^5 background which carry three independent angular momenta on S^5. These states can be counted by considering configurations of multiple dual-giant gravitons up to N in number which share at least four supersymmetries. We map this counting problem to that of counting the energy eigen states of a system of N bosons in a 3-dimensional harmonic oscillator. We also count 1/8-BPS states with two independent non-zero spins in AdS_5 and one non-zero angular momentum on S^5 by considering configurations of arbitrary number of giant gravitons that share at least four supersymmetries.

Rolling tachyon solution of two-dimensional string theory

We consider a classical (string) field theory of $c=1$ matrix model which was developed earlier in hep-th/9207011 and subsequent papers. This is a noncommutative field theory where the noncommutativity parameter is the string coupling $g_s$. We construct a classical solution of this field theory and show that it describes the complete time history of the recently found rolling tachyon on an unstable D0 brane.

Wave Propagation in Stringy Black Hole

We further study the nonperturbative formulation of two-dimensional black holes. We find a nonlinear differential equation satisfied by the tachyon in the black hole background. We show that singularities in the tachyon field configurations are always associated with divergent semiclassical expansions and are absent in the exact theory. We also discuss how the Euclidian black hole emerges from an analytically continued fermion theory that corresponds to the right side up harmonic oscillator potential.

Microscopic Formulation of Black Holes in String Theory

In this Report we review the microscopic formulation of the five dimensional black hole of type IIB string theory in terms of the D1-D5 brane system. The emphasis here is more on the brane dynamics than on supergravity solutions. We show how the low energy brane dynamics, combined with crucial inputs from AdS/CFT correspondence, leads to a derivation of black hole thermodynamics and the rate of Hawking radiation. Our approach requires a detailed exposition of the gauge theory and conformal field theory of the D1-D5 system. We also discuss some applications of the AdS/CFT correspondence in the context of black hole formation in three dimensions by thermal transition and by collision of point particles.

Quantum Aspects of GMS Solutions of Noncommutative Field Theory and Large N Limit of Matrix Models

We investigate quantum aspects of Gopakumar-Minwalla-Strominger (GMS) solutions of noncommutative field theory (NCFT) at large noncommutativity limit, $θ\to \infty$. Building upon a quantitative map between operator formulation of 2-(respectively, (2+1))-dimensional NCFTs and large $N$ matrix models of $c=0$ (respectively, $c=1$) noncritical strings, we show that GMS solutions are quantum mechanically sensible only if we make appropriate joint scaling of $θ$ and $N$. For 't Hooft's planar scaling, GMS solutions are replaced by large $N$ saddle-point solutions. GMS solutions are recovered from saddle-point solutions at small 't Hooft coupling regime, but are destabilized at large 'tHooft coupling regime by quantum effects. We make comparisons between these large $N$ effects and recently studied infrared effects in NCFTs. We estimate U(N) symmetry breaking gradient effects and argue that they are suppressed only at small 't Hooft coupling regime.

D1/D5 Moduli in SCFT and Gauge Theory, and Hawking Radiation

We construct marginal operators of the orbifold SCFT corresponding to all twenty near-horizon moduli in supergravity, including operators involving twist fields which correspond to the blowing up modes. We identify the operators with the supergravity moduli in a 1-1 fashion by inventing a global SO(4) algebra in the SCFT. We analyze the gauge dynamics of the D1/D5 system relevant to the splitting $(Q_1,Q_5)\to (Q'_1,Q'_5)+ (Q''_1,Q''_5)$ with the help of a linear sigma model. We show in supergravity as well as in SCFT that the absorption cross-section for minimal scalars is the same all over the near-horizon moduli space.

Leading Large N Modification of QCD_2 on a Cylinder by Dynamical Fermions

We consider 2-dimensional QCD on a cylinder, where space is a circle. We find the ground state of the system in case of massless quarks in a $1/N$ expansion. We find that coupling to fermions nontrivially modifies the large $N$ saddle point of the gauge theory due to the phenomenon of `decompactification' of eigenvalues of the gauge field. We calculate the vacuum energy and the vacuum expectation value of the Wilson loop operator both of which show a nontrivial dependence on the number of quarks flavours at the leading order in $1/N$.

String Field Theory of Two Dimensional QCD on a Cylinder: A Realization of W-infinity Current Algebra

We consider 2-dimensional QCD on a cylinder, where space is a circle of length $L$. We formulate the theory in terms of gauge-invariant gluon operators and multiple-winding meson (open string) operators. The meson bilocal operators satisfy a $W_\infty$ current algebra. The gluon sector (closed strings) contains purely quantum mechanical degrees of freedom. The description of this sector in terms of non-relativistic fermions leads to a $W_\infty$ algebra. The spectrum of excitations of the full theory is therefore organized according to two different algebras: a wedge subalgebra of $W_\infty$ current algebra in the meson sector and a wedge subalgebra of $W_\infty$ algebra in the glueball sector. In the large $N$ limit the theory becomes semiclassical and an effective description for the gluon degrees of freedom can be obtained. We have solved the effective theory of the gluons in the small $L$ limit. We get a glueball spectrum which coincides with the `discrete states' of the (Euclidean) $c=1$ string theory. We remark on the implications of these results for (a) QCD at finite temperature and (b) string theory.

Universal Cellular Automata and Class 4

Wolfram has provided a qualitative classification of cellular automata(CA) rules according to which, there exits a class of CA rules (called Class 4) which exhibit complex pattern formation and long-lived dynamical activity (long transients). These properties of Class 4 CA's has led to the conjecture that Class 4 rules are Universal Turing machines i.e. they are bases for computational universality. We describe an embedding of a ``small'' universal Turing machine due to Minsky, into a cellular automaton rule-table. This produces a collection of $(k=18,r=1)$ cellular automata, all of which are computationally universal. However, we observe that these rules are distributed amongst the various Wolfram classes. More precisely, we show that the identification of the Wolfram class depends crucially on the set of initial conditions used to simulate the given CA. This work, among others, indicates that a description of complex systems and information dynamics may need a new framework for non-equilibrium statistical mechanics.

A Time-Dependent Classical Solution of C=1 String Field Theory and Non-Perturbative Effects

We describe a real-time classical solution of $c=1$ string field theory written in terms of the phase space density, $u(p,q,t)$, of the equivalent fermion theory. The solution corresponds to tunnelling of a single fermion above the filled fermi sea and leads to amplitudes that go as $\exp(- C/ \gst)$. We discuss how one can use this technique to describe non-perturbative effects in the Marinari-Parisi model. We also discuss implications of this type of solution for the two-dimensional black hole.

Classical Fermi Fluid and Geometric Action for $c=1$

We formulate the $c=1$ matrix model as a quantum fluid and discuss its classical limit in detail, emphasizing the $\hbar$ corrections. We view the fermi fluid profiles as elements of \winf-coadjoint orbit and write down a geometric action for the classical phase space. In the specific representation of fluid profiles as `strings' the action is written in a four-dimensional form in terms of gauge fields built out of the embedding of the `string' in the phase plane. We show that the collective field action can be derived from the above action provided one restricts to quadratic fluid profiles and ignores the dynamics of their `turning points'.

Non-relativistic Fermions, Coadjoint Orbits of \winf\ and String Field Theory at $c=1$

We apply the method of coadjoint orbits of \winf-algebra to the problem of non-relativistic fermions in one dimension. This leads to a geometric formulation of the quantum theory in terms of the quantum phase space distribution of the fermi fluid. The action has an infinite series expansion in the string coupling, which to leading order reduces to the previously discussed geometric action for the classical fermi fluid based on the group $w_\infty$ of area-preserving diffeomorphisms. We briefly discuss the strong coupling limit of the string theory which, unlike the weak coupling regime, does not seem to admit of a two dimensional space-time picture. Our methods are equally applicable to interacting fermions in one dimension.

Gauge Theory Formulation of the $c=1$ Matrix Model: Symmetries and Discrete States

We present a non-relativistic fermionic field theory in 2-dimensions coupled to external gauge fields. The singlet sector of the $c=1$ matrix model corresponds to a specific external gauge field. The gauge theory is one-dimensional (time) and the space coordinate is treated as a group index. The generators of the gauge algebra are polynomials in the single particle momentum and position operators and they form the group $W^{(+)}_{1+\infty}$. There are corresponding Ward identities and residual gauge transformations that leave the external gauge fields invariant. We discuss the realization of these residual symmetries in the Minkowski time theory and conclude that the symmetries generated by the polynomial basis are not realized. We motivate and present an analytic continuation of the model which realises the group of residual symmetries. We consider the classical limit of this theory and make the correspondence with the discrete states of the $c=1$ (Euclidean time) Liouville theory. We explain the appearance of the $SL(2)$ structure in $W^{(+)}_{1+\infty}$. We also present all the Euclidean classical solutions and the classical action in the classical phase space. A possible relation of this theory to the $N=2$ string theory and also self-dual Einstein gravity in 4-dimensions is pointed out.
