Entanglement entropy of gravitational edge modes

We consider the linearised graviton in $4d$ Minkowski space and decompose it into tensor spherical harmonics and fix the gauge. The Gauss law of gravity implies that certain radial components of the Riemann tensor of the graviton on the sphere label the superselection sectors for the graviton. We show that among these 6 normal components of the Riemann tensor, 2 are related locally to the algebra of gauge-invariant operators in the sphere. From the two-point function of these components of the Riemann tensor on $S^2$ we compute the logarithmic coefficient of the entanglement entropy of these superselection sectors across a spherical entangling surface. For sectors labelled by each of the two components of the Riemann tensor these coefficients are equal and their total contribution is given by $-\frac{16}{3}$. We observe that this coefficient coincides with that extracted from the edge partition function of the massless spin-2 field on the 4-sphere when written in terms of its Harish-Chandra character. As a preliminary step, we also evaluate the logarithmic coefficient of the entanglement entropy from the superselection sectors labelled by the radial component of the electric field of the $U(1)$ theory in even $d$ dimensions. We show that this agrees with the corresponding coefficient of the edge Harish-Chandra character of the massless spin-1 field on $S^d$.

Entanglement in descendants

We study the single interval entanglement and relative entropies of conformal descendants in 2d CFT. Descendants contain non-trivial entanglement, though the entanglement entropy of the canonical primary in the free boson CFT contains no additional entanglement compared to the vacuum, we show that the entanglement entropy of the state created by its level one descendant is non-trivial and is identical to that of the $U(1)$ current in this theory. We determine the first sub-leading corrections to the short interval expansion of the entanglement entropy of descendants in a general CFT from their four point function on the n-sheeted plane. We show that these corrections are determined by multiplying squares of appropriate dressing factors to the corresponding corrections of the primary. Relative entropy between descendants of the same primary is proportional to the square of the difference of their dressing factors. We apply our results to a class of descendants of generalized free fields and descendants of the vacuum and show that their dressing factors are universal.

Boundary conditions and localization on AdS: Part 2 General analysis

We develop the method of Green's function to evaluate the one loop determinants that arise in localization of supersymmetric field theories on $AdS$ spaces. The theories we study have at least ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetry and normalisable boundary conditions are consistent with supersymmetry. We then show that under general assumptions the variation of the one loop determinant with respect to the localizing background reduces to a total derivative. Therefore it receives contributions only from the origin of $AdS$ and from asymptotic infinity. From expanding both the Greens function and the quadratic operators at the origin of $AdS$ and asymptotic infinity, we show that the variation of the one loop determinant is proportional to an integer. Furthermore, we show that this integer is an index of a first order differential operator. We demonstrate that these assumptions are valid for Chern-Simons theories coupled to chiral multiplets on $AdS_2\times S^1$. Finally we use our results to show that $U(N_c)$ Chern-Simons theory at level $k$ coupled to $N_f$ chiral multiplets and $N_f$ anti-chiral multiplets in the fundamental obeys level-rank duality on $AdS_2\times S^1$.

Chaos bound in Bershadsky-Polyakov theory

We consider two dimensional conformal field theory (CFT) with large central charge c in an excited state obtained by the insertion of an operator Φwith large dimension Δ_Φ~ O(c) at spatial infinities in the thermal state. We argue that correlation functions of light operators in such a state can be viewed as thermal correlators with a rescaled effective temperature. The effective temperature controls the growth of out-of-time order (OTO) correlators and results in a violation of the universal upper bound on the associated Lyapunov exponent when Δ_Φ<0 and the CFT is nonunitary. We present a specific realization of this situation in the holographic Chern-Simons formulation of a CFT with {W}^{(2)}_3 symmetry also known as the Bershadsky-Polyakov algebra. We examine the precise correspondence between the semiclassical (large-c) representations of this algebra and the Chern-Simons formulation, and infer that the holographic CFT possesses a discretuum of degenerate ground states with negative conformal dimension Δ_Φ=- c/8. Using the Wilson line prescription to compute entanglement entropy and OTO correlators in the holographic CFT undergoing a local quench, we find the Lyapunov exponent λ_L = 4π/ β, violating the universal chaos bound.

Renyi divergences from Euclidean quenches

We study the generalisation of relative entropy, the Renyi divergence $D_α ( ρ||ρ_β) $ in 2$d$ CFTs between an excited state density matrix $ρ$, created by deforming the Hamiltonian, and the thermal density matrix $ρ_β$. Using the path integral representation of this quantity as a Euclidean quench, we obtain the leading contribution to the Renyi divergence for deformations by scalar primaries and by conserved holomorphic currents in conformal perturbation theory. Furthermore, we calculate the leading contribution to the Renyi divergence when the conserved current perturbations have inhomogeneous spatial profiles which are versions of the sine-square deformation (SSD). The dependence on the Renyi parameter ($α$) of the leading contribution have a universal form for these inhomogeneous deformations and it is identical to that seen in the Renyi divergence of the simple harmonic oscillator perturbed by a linear potential. Our study of these Renyi divergences shows that the family of second laws of thermodynamics, which are equivalent to the monotonicity of Renyi divergences, do indeed provide stronger constraints for allowed transitions compared to the traditional second law.

Global gravitational anomalies and transport

We investigate the constraints imposed by global gravitational anomalies on parity odd induced transport coefficients in even dimensions for theories with chiral fermions, gravitinos and self dual tensors. The $η$-invariant for the large diffeomorphism corresponding to the $T$ transformation on a torus constraints the coefficients in the thermal effective action up to mod 2. We show that the result obtained for the parity odd transport for gravitinos using global anomaly matching is consistent with the direct perturbative calculation. In $d=6$ we see that the second Pontryagin class in the anomaly polynomial does not contribute to the $η$-invariant which provides a topological explanation of this observation in the `replacement rule'. We then perform a direct perturbative calculation for the contribution of the self dual tensor in $d=6$ to the parity odd transport coefficient using the Feynman rules proposed by Gaumé and Witten. The result for the transport coefficient agrees with that obtained using matching of global anomalies.

Universal corrections to entanglement entropy of local quantum quenches

We study the time evolution of single interval Renyi and entanglement entropies following local quantum quenches in two dimensional conformal field theories at finite temperature for which the locally excited states have a finite temporal width, ε. We show that, for local quenches produced by the action of a conformal primary field, the time dependence of Renyi and entanglement entropies at order ε^2 is universal. It is determined by the expectation value of the stress tensor in the replica geometry and proportional to the conformal dimension of the primary field generating the local excitation. We also show that in CFTs with a gravity dual, the ε^2 correction to the holographic entanglement entropy following a local quench precisely agrees with the CFT prediction. We then consider CFTs admitting a higher spin symmetry and turn on a higher spin chemical potential μ. We calculate the time dependence of the order ε^2 correction to the entanglement entropy for small μ, and show that the contribution at order μ^2 is universal. We verify our arguments against exact results for minimal models and the free fermion theory.

Anomalous transport at weak coupling

We evaluate the contribution of chiral fermions in $d=2, 4, 6$, chiral bosons, a chiral gravitino like theory in $d=2$ and chiral gravitinos in $d=6$ to all the leading parity odd transport coefficients at one loop. This is done by using finite temperature field theory to evaluate the relevant Kubo formulae. For chiral fermions and chiral bosons the relation between the parity odd transport coefficient and the microscopic anomalies including gravitational anomalies agree with that found by using the general methods of hydrodynamics and the argument involving the consistency of the Euclidean vacuum. For the gravitino like theory in $d=2$ and chiral gravitinos in $d=6$, we show that relation between the pure gravitational anomaly and parity odd transport breaks down. From the perturbative calculation we clearly identify the terms that contribute to the anomaly polynomial, but not to the transport coefficient for gravitinos. We also develop a simple method for evaluating the angular integrals in the one loop diagrams involved in the Kubo formulae. Finally we show that charge diffusion mode of an ideal 2 dimensional Weyl gas in the presence of a finite chemical potential acquires a speed, which is equal to half the speed of light.

Conformal perturbation theory and higher spin entanglement entropy on the torus

We study the free fermion theory in 1+1 dimensions deformed by chemical potentials for holomorphic, conserved currents at finite temperature and on a spatial circle. For a spin-three chemical potential μ, the deformation is related at high temperatures to a higher spin black hole in hs[0] theory on AdS_3 spacetime. We calculate the order μ^2 corrections to the single interval Renyi and entanglement entropies on the torus using the bosonized formulation. A consistent result, satisfying all checks, emerges upon carefully accounting for both perturbative and winding mode contributions in the bosonized language. The order μ^2 corrections involve integrals that are finite but potentially sensitive to contact term singularities. We propose and apply a prescription for defining such integrals which matches the Hamiltonian picture and passes several non-trivial checks for both thermal corrections and the Renyi entropies at this order. The thermal corrections are given by a weight six quasi-modular form, whilst the Renyi entropies are controlled by quasi-elliptic functions of the interval length with modular weight six. We also point out the well known connection between the perturbative expansion of the partition function in powers of the spin-three chemical potential and the Gross-Taylor genus expansion of large-N Yang-Mills theory on the torus. We note the absence of winding mode contributions in this connection, which suggests qualitatively different entanglement entropies for the two systems.

Heterotic string on the CHL orbifold of K3

We study ${\cal N}=2$ compactifications of heterotic string theory on the CHL orbifold $(K3\times T^2)/\mathbb{Z}_N$ with $N= 2, 3, 5, 7$. $\mathbb{Z}_N$ acts as an involution on $K3$ together with a shift of $1/N$ along one of the circles of $T^2$. These compactifications generalize the example of the heterotic string on $K3\times T^2$ studied in the context of dualities in ${\cal N}=2$ string theories. We evaluate the new supersymmetric index for these theories and show that their expansion can written in terms of the McKay-Thompson series associated with the $\mathbb{Z}_N$ involution embedded in the Mathieu group $M_{24}$. We then evaluate the difference in one-loop threshold corrections to the non-Abelian gauge couplings with Wilson lines and show that their moduli dependence is captured by Siegel modular forms related to dyon partition functions of ${\cal N}=4$ string theories.

Thermalization of Green functions and quasinormal modes

We develop a new method to study the thermalization of time dependent retarded Green function in conformal field theories holographically dual to thin shell AdS Vaidya space times. The method relies on using the information of all time derivatives of the Green function at the shell and then evolving it for later times. The time derivatives of the Green function at the shell is given in terms of a recursion formula. Using this method we obtain analytic results for short time thermalization of the Green function. We show that the late time behaviour of the Green function is determined by the first quasinormal mode. We then implement the method numerically. As applications of this method we study the thermalization of the retarded time dependent Green function corresponding to a minimally coupled scalar in the AdS3 and AdS5 thin Vaidya shells. We see that as expected the late time behaviour is determined by the first quasinormal mode. We apply the method to study the late time behaviour of the shear vector mode in AdS5 Vaidya shell. At small momentum the corresponding time dependent Green function is expected to relax to equilibrium by the shear hydrodynamic mode. Using this we obtain the universal ratio of the shear viscosity to entropy density from a time dependent process.

A universal correction to higher spin entanglement entropy

We consider conformal field theories in 1+1 dimensions with W-algebra symmetries, deformed by a chemical potential μfor the spin-three current. We show that the order μ^2 correction to the Re'nyi and entanglement entropies of a single interval in the deformed theory, on the infinite spatial line and at finite temperature, is universal. The correction is completely determined by the operator product expansion of two spin-three currents, and by the expectation values of the stress tensor, its descendants and its composites, evaluated on the n-sheeted Riemann surface branched along the interval. This explains the recently found agreement of the order μ^2 correction across distinct free field CFTs and higher spin black hole solutions holographically dual to CFTs with W-symmetry.

Higher spin entanglement entropy from CFT

We consider free fermion and free boson CFTs in two dimensions, deformed by a chemical potential $μ$ for the spin-three current. For the CFT on the infinite spatial line, we calculate the finite temperature entanglement entropy of a single interval perturbatively to second order in $μ$ in each of the theories. We find that the result in each case is given by the same non-trivial function of temperature and interval length. Remarkably, we further obtain the same formula using a recent Wilson line proposal for the holographic entanglement entropy, in holomorphically factorized form, associated to the spin-three black hole in SL(3, R) x SL(3, R) Chern-Simons theory. Our result suggests that the order $μ^2$ correction to the entanglement entropy may be universal for W-algebra CFTs with spin-three chemical potential, and constitutes a check of the holographic entanglement entropy proposal for higher spin theories of gravity in AdS_3.

Renyi entropies of free bosons on the torus and holography

We analytically evaluate the Renyi entropies for the two dimensional free boson CFT. The CFT is considered to be compactified on a circle and at finite temperature. The Renyi entropies S_n are evaluated for a single interval using the two point function of bosonic twist fields on a torus. For the case of the compact boson, the sum over the classical saddle points results in the Riemann-Siegel theta function associated with the A_{n-1} lattice. We then study the Renyi entropies in the decompactification regime. We show that in the limit when the size of the interval becomes the size of the spatial circle, the entanglement entropy reduces to the thermal entropy of free bosons on a circle. We then set up a systematic high temperature expansion of the Renyi entropies and evaluate the finite size corrections for free bosons. Finally we compare these finite size corrections both for the free boson CFT and the free fermion CFT with the one-loop corrections obtained from bulk three dimensional handlebody spacetimes which have higher genus Riemann surfaces as its boundary. One-loop corrections in these geometries are entirely determined by quantum numbers of the excitations present in the bulk. This implies that the leading finite size corrections contributions from one-loop determinants of the Chern-Simons gauge field and the Dirac field in the dual geometry should reproduce that of the free boson and the free fermion CFT respectively. By evaluating these corrections both in the bulk and in the CFT explicitly we show that this expectation is indeed true.

Spinning strings and minimal surfaces in $AdS_3$ with mixed 3-form fluxes

Motivated by the recent proposal for the S-matrix in $AdS_3\times S^3$ with mixed three form fluxes, we study classical folded string spinning in $AdS_3$ with both Ramond and Neveu-Schwarz three form fluxes. We solve the equations of motion of these strings and obtain their dispersion relation to the leading order in the Neveu-Schwarz flux $b$. We show that dispersion relation for the spinning strings with large spin ${\cal S}$ acquires a term given by $-\frac{\sqrtλ}{2π} b^2\log^2 {\cal S}$ in addition to the usual $\frac{\sqrtλ}π \log {\cal S}$ term where $\sqrtλ$ is proportional to the square of the radius of $AdS_3$. Using SO(2,2) transformations and re-parmetrizations we show that these spinning strings can be related to light like Wilson loops in $AdS_3$ with Neveu-Schwarz flux $b$. We observe that the logarithmic divergence in the area of the light like Wilson loop is also deformed by precisely the same coefficient of the $ b^2 \log^2 {\cal S}$ term in the dispersion relation of the spinning string. This result indicates that the coefficient of $ b^2 \log^2 {\cal S}$ has a property similar to the coefficient of the $\log {\cal S}$ term, known as cusp-anomalous dimension, and can possibly be determined to all orders in the coupling $λ$ using the recent proposal for the S-matrix.

Black holes in higher spin supergravity

We study black hole solutions in Chern-Simons higher spin supergravity based on the superalgebra sl(3|2). These black hole solutions have a U(1) gauge field and a spin 2 hair in addition to the spin 3 hair. These additional fields correspond to the R-symmetry charges of the supergroup sl(3|2). Using the relation between the bulk field equations and the Ward identities of a CFT with N=2 super-W_3 symmetry, we identify the bulk charges and chemical potentials with those of the boundary CFT. From these identifications we see that a suitable set of variables to study this black hole is in terms of the charges present in three decoupled bosonic sub-algebras of the N=2 super-W_3 algebra. The entropy and the partition function of these R-charged black holes are then evaluated in terms of the charges of the bulk theory as well as in terms of its chemical potentials. We then compute the partition function in the dual CFT and find exact agreement with the bulk partition function.

Second order transport from anomalies

We study parity odd transport at second order in derivative expansion for a non-conformal charged fluid. We see that there are 27 parity odd transport coefficients, of which 12 are non-vanishing in equilibrium. We use the equilibrium partition function method to express 7 of these in terms of the anomaly, shear viscosity, charge diffusivity and thermodynamic functions. The remaining 5 are constrained by 3 relations which also involve the anomaly. We derive Kubo formulae for 2 of the transport coefficients and show these agree with that derived from the equilibrium partition function.

Structure constants of $β$ deformed super Yang-Mills

We study the structure constants of the ${\cal N}=1$ beta deformed theory perturbatively and at strong coupling. We show that the planar one loop corrections to the structure constants of single trace gauge invariant operators in the scalar sector is determined by the anomalous dimension Hamiltonian. This result implies that 3 point functions of the chiral primaries of the theory do not receive corrections at one loop. We then study the structure constants at strong coupling using the Lunin-Maldacena geometry. We explicitly construct the supergravity mode dual to the chiral primary with three equal U(1) R-charges in the Lunin-Maldacena geometry. We show that the 3 point function of this supergravity mode with semi-classical states representing two other similar chiral primary states but with large U(1) charges to be independent of the beta deformation and identical to that found in the $AdS_5\times S^5$ geometry. This together with the one-loop result indicate that these structure constants are protected by a non-renormalization theorem. We also show that three point function of U(1) R-currents with classical massive strings is proportional to the R-charge carried by the string solution. This is in accordance with the prediction of the R-symmetry Ward identity.

Generating string solutions in BTZ

Integrability of classical strings in the BTZ black hole enables the construction and study of classical string propagation in this background. We first apply the dressing method to obtain classical string solutions in the BTZ black hole. We dress time like geodesics in the BTZ black hole and obtain open string solutions which are pinned on the boundary at a single point and whose end points move on time like geodesics. These strings upon regularising their charge and spins have a dispersion relation similar to that of giant magnons. We then dress space like geodesics which start and end on the boundary of the BTZ black hole and obtain minimal surfaces which can penetrate the horizon of the black hole while being pinned at the boundary. Finally we embed the giant gluon solutions in the BTZ background in two different ways. They can be embedded as a spiral which contracts and expands touching the horizon or a spike which originates from the boundary and touches the horizon.

Higher spin fermions in the BTZ black hole

Recently it has been shown that the wave equations of bosonic higher spin fields in the BTZ background can be solved exactly. In this work we extend this analysis to fermionic higher spin fields. We solve the wave equations for arbitrary half-integer spin fields in the BTZ black hole background and obtain exact expressions for their quasinormal modes. These quasinormal modes are shown to agree precisely with the poles of the corresponding two point function in the dual conformal field theory as predicted by the AdS/CFT correspondence. We also obtain an expression for the 1-loop determinant in terms of the quasinormal modes and show it agrees with that obtained by integrating the heat kernel found by group theoretic methods.

Shear sum rules at finite chemical potential

We derive sum rules which constrain the spectral density corresponding to the retarded propagator of the T_{xy} component of the stress tensor for three gravitational duals. The shear sum rule is obtained for the gravitational dual of the N=4 Yang-Mills, theory of the M2-branes and M5-branes all at finite chemical potential. We show that at finite chemical potential there are additional terms in the sum rule which involve the chemical potential. These modifications are shown to be due to the presence of scalars in the operator product expansion of the stress tensor which have non-trivial vacuum expectation values at finite chemical potential.

Sum rules and three point functions

Sum rules constraining the R-current spectral densities are derived holographically for the case of D3-branes, M2-branes and M5-branes all at finite chemical potentials. In each of the cases the sum rule relates a certain integral of the spectral density over the frequency to terms which depend both on long distance physics, hydrodynamics and short distance physics of the theory. The terms which which depend on the short distance physics result from the presence of certain chiral primaries in the OPE of two R-currents which are turned on at finite chemical potential. Since these sum rules contain information of the OPE they provide an alternate method to obtain the structure constants of the two R-currents and the chiral primary. As a consistency check we show that the 3 point function derived from the sum rule precisely matches with that obtained using Witten diagrams.

Supersymmetry of classical solutions in Chern-Simons higher spin supergravity

We construct and study classical solutions in Chern-Simons supergravity based on the superalgebra sl(N|N-1). The algebra for the N=3 case is written down explicitly using the fact that it arises as the global part of the super conformal W_3 superalgebra. For this case we construct new classical solutions and study their supersymmetry. Using the algebra we write down the Killing spinor equations and explicitly construct the Killing spinor for conical defects and black holes in this theory. We show that for the general sl(N|N-1) theory the condition for the periodicity of the Killing spinor can be written in terms of the products of the odd roots of the super algebra and the eigenvalues of the holonomy matrix of the background. Thus the supersymmetry of a given background can be stated in terms of gauge invariant and well defined physical observables of the Chern-Simons theory. We then show that for N\geq 4, the sl(N|N-1) theory admits smooth supersymmetric conical defects.

Thermodynamics of higher spin black holes in 3D

We examine the thermodynamic properties of recently constructed black hole solutions in SL(3,R) x SL(3,R) Chern-Simons theory in the presence of a chemical potential for spin-3 charge, which acts as an irrelevant deformation of the dual CFT with W_3 x W_3 symmetry. The smoothness or holonomy conditions admit four branches of solutions describing a flow between two AdS_3 backgrounds corresponding to two different CFTs. The dominant branch at low temperatures, connected to the BTZ black hole, merges smoothly with a thermodynamically unstable branch and disappears at higher temperatures. We confirm that the UV region of the flow satisfies the Ward identities of a CFT with W_3^(2) x W_3^(2) symmetry deformed by a spin-3/2 current. This allows to identify the precise map between UV and IR thermodynamic variables. We find that the high temperature regime is dominated by a black hole branch whose thermodynamics can only be consistently inferred with reference to this W_3^(2) x W_3^(2) CFT.

Classical integrability in the BTZ black hole

Using the fact the BTZ black hole is a quotient of AdS_3 we show that classical string propagation in the BTZ background is integrable. We construct the flat connection and its monodromy matrix which generates the non-local charges. From examining the general behaviour of the eigen values of the monodromy matrix we determine the set of integral equations which constrain them. These equations imply that each classical solution is characterized by a density function in the complex plane. For classical solutions which correspond to geodesics and winding strings we solve for the eigen values of the monodromy matrix explicitly and show that geodesics correspond to zero density in the complex plane. We solve the integral equations for BMN and magnon like solutions and obtain their dispersion relation. Finally we show that the set of integral equations which constrain the eigen values of the monodromy matrix can be identified with the continuum limit of the Bethe equations of a twisted SL(2, R) spin chain at one loop.

Higher spin quasinormal modes and one-loop determinants in the BTZ black hole

We solve the wave equations of arbitrary integer spin fields in the BTZ black hole background and obtain exact expressions for their quasinormal modes. We show that these quasinormal modes precisely agree with the location of the poles of the corresponding two point function in the dual conformal field theory as predicted by the AdS/CFT correspondence. We then use these quasinormal modes to construct the one-loop determinant of the higher spin field in the thermal BTZ background. This is shown to agree with that obtained from the corresponding heat kernel constructed recently by group theoretic methods.

Hydrodynamics of R-charged D1-branes

We study the hydrodynamic properties of strongly coupled $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory of the D1-brane at finite temperature and at a non-zero density of R-charge in the framework of gauge/gravity duality. The gravity dual description involves a charged black hole solution of an Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton system in 3 dimensions which is obtained by a consistent truncation of the spinning D1-brane in 10 dimensions. We evaluate thermal and electrical conductivity as well as the bulk viscosity as a function of the chemical potential conjugate to the R-charges of the D1-brane. We show that the ratio of bulk viscosity to entropy density is independent of the chemical potential and is equal to $1/4π$. The thermal conductivity and bulk viscosity obey a relationship similar to the Wiedemann-Franz law. We show that at the boundary of thermodynamic stability, the charge diffusion mode becomes unstable and the transport coefficients exhibit critical behaviour. Our method for evaluating the transport coefficients relies on expressing the second order differential equations in terms of a first order equation which dictates the radial evolution of the transport coefficient. The radial evolution equations can be solved exactly for the transport coefficients of our interest. We observe that transport coefficients of the D1-brane theory are related to that of the M2-brane by an overall proportionality constant which sets the dimensions.

S-matrix for magnons in the D1-D5 system

We show that integrability and symmetries of the near horizon geometry of the D1-D5 system determine the S-matrix for the scattering of magnons with polarizations in AdS3 $\times$ S3 completely up to a phase. Using semi-classical methods we evaluate the phase to the leading and to the one-loop approximation in the strong coupling expansion. We then show that the phase obeys the unitarity constraint implied by the crossing relations to the one-loop order. We also verify that the dispersion relation obeyed by these magnons is one-loop exact at strong coupling which is consistent with their BPS nature.

Giant magnons in the D1-D5 system

We study giant magnons in the the D1-D5 system from both the boundary CFT and as classical solutions of the string sigma model in $AdS_3\times S^3\times T^4$. Re-examining earlier studies of the symmetric product conformal field theory we argue that giant magnons in the symmetric product are BPS states in a centrally extended $SU(1|1)\times SU(1|1)$ superalgebra with two more additional central charges. The magnons carry these additional central charges locally but globally they vanish. Using a spin chain description of these magnons and the extended superalgebra we show that these magnons obey a dispersion relation which is periodic in momentum. We then identify these states on the string theory side and show that here too they are BPS in the same centrally extended algebra and obey the same dispersion relation which is periodic in momentum. This dispersion relation arises as the BPS condition for the extended algebra and is similar to that of magnons in ${\cal N}=4$ Yang-Mills

Worldsheet Properties of Extremal Correlators in AdS/CFT

We continue to investigate planar four point worldsheet correlators of string theories which are conjectured to be duals of free gauge theories. We focus on the extremal correlators <Tr(Z^{J_1}(x)) Tr(Z^{J_2}(y)) Tr(Z^{J_3}(z)) Tr(\bar{Z}^{J}(0))> of $N = 4$ SYM theory, and construct the corresponding worldsheet correlators in the limit when the $J_i >> 1$. The worldsheet correlator gets contributions, in this limit, from a whole family of Feynman graphs. We find that it is supported on a {\it curve} in the moduli space parametrised by the worldsheet crossratio. In a further limit of the spacetime correlators we find this curve to be the unit circle. In this case, we also check that the entire worldsheet correlator displays the appropriate crossing symmetry. The non-renormalization of the extremal correlators in the 't Hooft coupling offers a potential window for a comparison of these results with those from strong coupling.

From Spacetime to Worldsheet: Four point correlators

The Schwinger representation gives a systematic procedure for recasting large N field theory amplitudes as integrals over closed string moduli space. This procedure has recently been applied to a class of free field four point functions by Aharony, Komargodski and Razamat, to study the leading terms in the putative worldsheet OPE. Here we observe that the dictionary between Schwinger parameters and the cross ratio of the four punctured sphere actually yields an explicit expression for the full worldsheet four point correlator in many such cases. This expression has a suggestive form and obeys various properties, such as crossing symmetry and mutual locality, expected of a correlator in a two dimensional CFT. Therefore one may take this to be a candidate four point function in a worldsheet description of closed strings on highly curved AdS_5 \times S^5. The general framework, that we develop for computing the relevant Strebel differentials, also admits a systematic perturbation expansion which would be useful for studying more general four point correlators.

Structure constants of planar N =4 Yang Mills at one loop

We study structure constants of gauge invariant operators in planar N=4 Yang-Mills at one loop with the motivation of determining features of the string dual of weak coupling Yang-Mills. We derive a simple renormalization group invariant formula characterizing the corrections to structure constants of any primary operator in the planar limit. Applying this to the scalar SO(6) sector we find that the one loop corrections to structure constants of gauge invariant operators is determined by the one loop anomalous dimension Hamiltonian in this sector. We then evaluate the one loop corrections to structure constants for scalars with arbitrary number of derivatives in a given holomorphic direction. We find that the corrections can be characterized by suitable derivatives on the four point tree function of a massless scalar with quartic coupling. We show that individual diagrams violating conformal invariance can be combined together to restore it using a linear inhomogeneous partial differential equation satisfied by this function.

Gravitational F-terms through anomaly equations and deformed chiral rings

We study effective gravitational F-terms, obtained by integrating an $U(N)$ adjoint chiral superfield $Φ$ coupled to the ${\cal N}=1$ gauge chiral superfield $W_α$ and supergravity, to arbitrary orders in the gravitational background. The latter includes in addition to the ${\cal N}=1$ Weyl superfield $G_{αβγ}$, the self-dual graviphoton field strength $F_{αβ}$ of the parent, broken ${\cal N}=2$ theory. We first study the chiral ring relations resulting from the above non-standard gravitational background and find agreement, for gauge invariant operators, with those obtained from the dual closed string side via Bianchi identities for ${\cal N}=2$ supergravity coupled to vector multiplets. We then derive generalized anomaly equations for connected correlators on the gauge theory side, which allow us to solve for the basic one-point function $\langle {\rm Tr} W^2/(z-Φ)\rangle$ to all orders in $F^2$. By generalizing the matrix model loop equation to the generating functional of connected correlators of resolvents, we prove that the gauge theory result coincides with the genus expansion of the associated matrix model, after identifying the expansion parameters on the two sides.

Microscopic Formulation of Black Holes in String Theory

In this Report we review the microscopic formulation of the five dimensional black hole of type IIB string theory in terms of the D1-D5 brane system. The emphasis here is more on the brane dynamics than on supergravity solutions. We show how the low energy brane dynamics, combined with crucial inputs from AdS/CFT correspondence, leads to a derivation of black hole thermodynamics and the rate of Hawking radiation. Our approach requires a detailed exposition of the gauge theory and conformal field theory of the D1-D5 system. We also discuss some applications of the AdS/CFT correspondence in the context of black hole formation in three dimensions by thermal transition and by collision of point particles.

Tachyon condensation using the disc partition function

It has been recently proposed that the background independent open superstring field theory action is given by the disc partition function with all possible open string operators inserted at the boundary of the disc. We use this proposal to study tachyon condensation in the D0-D2 system. We evaluate the disc partition function for the D0-D2 system in presence of a large Neveu-Schwarz B-field using perturbation theory. This perturbative expansion of the disc partition function makes sense as the boundary tachyon operator for the large Neveu-Schwarz B-field is almost marginal. We find that the mass defect for the formation of the D0-D2 bound state agrees exactly with the expected result in the large B-field limit.

D1/D5 Moduli in SCFT and Gauge Theory, and Hawking Radiation

We construct marginal operators of the orbifold SCFT corresponding to all twenty near-horizon moduli in supergravity, including operators involving twist fields which correspond to the blowing up modes. We identify the operators with the supergravity moduli in a 1-1 fashion by inventing a global SO(4) algebra in the SCFT. We analyze the gauge dynamics of the D1/D5 system relevant to the splitting $(Q_1,Q_5)\to (Q'_1,Q'_5)+ (Q''_1,Q''_5)$ with the help of a linear sigma model. We show in supergravity as well as in SCFT that the absorption cross-section for minimal scalars is the same all over the near-horizon moduli space.
