A photometric and astrometric study of the open clusters NGC 1664 and NGC 6939

This study calculated astrophysical parameters, as well as kinematic and galactic orbital parameters, of the open clusters NGC 1664 and NGC 6939. The work is based on CCD UBV and Gaia photometric and astrometric data from ground and space-based observations. Considering Gaia Early Data Release 3 (EDR3) astrometric data, we determined membership probabilities of stars located in both of the clusters. We used two-color diagrams to determine $E(B-V)$ color excesses for NGC 1664 and NGC 6939 as $0.190 \pm 0.018$ and $0.380 \pm 0.025$ mag, respectively. Photometric metallicities for the two clusters were estimated as [Fe/H] = $-0.10 \pm 0.02$ dex for NGC 1664 and as [Fe/H] = $-0.06 \pm 0.01$ dex for NGC 6939. Using the reddening and metallicity calculated in the study, we obtained distance moduli and ages of the clusters by fitting PARSEC isochrones to the color-magnitude diagrams based on the most likely member stars. Isochrone fitting distances are $1289 \pm 47$ pc and $1716 \pm 87$ pc, which coincide with ages of $675 \pm 50$ Myr and $1.5 \pm 0.2$ Gyr for NGC 1664 and NGC 6939, respectively. We also derived the distances to the clusters using Gaia trigonometric parallaxes and compared these estimates with the literature. We concluded that the results are in good agreement with those given by the current study. Present day mass function slopes were calculated as $Γ=-1.22\pm0.33$ and $Γ=-1.18\pm0.21$ for NGC 1664 and NGC 6939, respectively, which are compatible with the Salpeter (1955) slope. Analyses showed that both of clusters are dynamically relaxed. The kinematic and dynamic orbital parameters of the clusters were calculated, indicating that the birthplaces of the clusters are outside the solar circle.

Spatially Resolved Chandra Spectroscopy of Supernova Remnant DEM L71 in the Large Magellanic Cloud

We present a detailed X-ray spectroscopic study of the supernova remnant DEM L71 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Based on deep $\sim 103$ ks archival {\it Chandra} data, we perform a detailed spatially resolved spectral analysis of DEM L71. We analyze regional spectra extracted from thin-sliced regions along several different azimuthal directions of the SNR to construct radial profiles of elemental abundances for O, Ne, Mg, Si, and Fe. Our elemental abundance measurements reveal an asymmetrical spatial distribution of metal-rich ejecta gas. Especially the asymmetry on the western part of the central Fe distribution is remarkable. While the location of the contact discontinuity is generally at $\sim 5$ pc from the geometric center of the X-ray emission of DEM L71, it is uncertain in western part of the remnant. Fe is enhanced in the ejecta while O and Ne abundances are generally negligible. This finding confirms the Type Ia origin of DEM L71. We estimate an upper limit on the Sedov age of $\sim 6,660\pm 770$ yr and explosion energy of $\sim 1.74\pm 0.35\times 10^{51}$ erg for the remnant. This explosion energy estimate is consistent with a canonical explosion of a Type Ia supernova remnant.

Bridging the Ultraviolet and Optical Regions: Transformation Equations between {\it GALEX} and {\it UBV} Photometric Systems

We derive transformation equations between GALEX and UBV colours by using the reliable data of 556 stars. We present two sets of equations; as a function of (only) luminosity class, and as a function of both luminosity class and metallicity. The metallicities are provided from the literature, while the luminosity classes are determined by using the PARSEC mass tracks in this study. Small colour residuals and high squared correlation coefficients promise accurate derived colours. The application of the transformation equations to 70 stars with reliable data shows that the metallicity plays an important role in estimation of more accurate colours.

Empirical Bolometric Correction Coefficients for Nearby Main-Sequence Stars in Gaia Era

Nearby detached double-lined eclipsing binaries with most accurate data were studied and 290 systems were found with at least one main-sequence component having a metallicity $0.008\leq Z\leq 0.040$. Stellar parameters, light ratios, Gaia DR2 trigonometric parallaxes, extinctions and/or reddening were investigated and only 206 systems were selected eligible to calculate empirical bolometric corrections. NASA-IPAC Galactic dust maps were main source of extinctions. Unreliable extinctions at low Galactic latitudes $|b|\leq5^o$ were replaced with individual determinations, if they exist in the literature, else associated systems are discarded. Main-sequence stars of remaining systems were used to calculate bolometric corrections ($BC$) and to calibrate $BC-T_{eff}$ relation, which is valid in the range 3100-36000 K. De-reddened $(B-V)_0$ colours, on the other hand, allowed us to calibrate two intrinsic colour effective temperature relations, where the linear one is valid for $T_{eff}>10000$ K, while the quadratic relation is valid for $T_{eff}<10000$ K, that is, both are valid in the same temperature range $BC-T_{eff}$ relation is valid. New $BC$ computed from $T_{eff}$ and other astrophysical parameters are tabulated, as well.

Kepler Binary Stars in NGC 6819 Open Cluster: KIC 5113146 and KIC 5111815

In this study, investigation of two double-lined binary stars KIC 5113146 and KIC 5111815 in NGC 6819 is presented based on both photometric and spectroscopic data. Simultaneous analysis of light and radial velocity curves was made and the absolute parameters of the systems' components were determined for the first time. We find that both systems have F-type main-sequence components. The masses and radii were found to be $M_1=1.29\pm0.02 M_{\odot}$, $R_{1}=1.47\pm0.03 R_{\odot}$ and $M_{2}=1.19\pm0.02 M_{\odot}$, $R_{2}=1.13\pm0.02 R_{\odot}$ for the primary and secondary components of KIC 5113146; $M_{1}=1.51\pm0.08 M_{\odot}$, $R_{1}=2.02\pm0.05 R_{\odot}$ and $M_{2}=1.19\pm0.07 M_{\odot}$, $R_{2}=1.32\pm0.04 R_{\odot}$ for components of KIC 5111815, respectively. Evolutionary status of the components was evaluated based on the MESA evolutionary tracks and isochrones. The ages of the KIC 5111815 and KIC 5113146 were derived to be about $2.50\pm0.35$ Gyr and $1.95\pm0.40$ Gyr, respectively. Photometric distances were calculated to be $2850\pm 185$ pc for KIC 5113146 and $3120\pm 260$ pc for KIC 5111815. The results obtained in this study, astrometric data and researches in the literature reveal that both KIC 5113146 and KIC 5111815 systems are the most likely member of NGC 6819.

CCD UBV photometry of the open cluster NGC 6819

We present the results of CCD UBV observations of the open cluster NGC 6819. We calculated the stellar density profile in the cluster's field to determine the structural parameters of NGC 6819. Using the existing astrometric data, we calculated the probabilities of the stars being physical members of the cluster, and used these objects in the determination of the astrophysical parameters of NGC 6819. We inferred the reddening and metallicity of the cluster as $E(B-V)=0.130\pm0.035$ mag and $[Fe/H]=+0.051\pm 0.020$ dex, respectively, using the U-B vs B-V two-colour diagram and UV excesses of the F-G type main-sequence stars. We fit the colour-magnitude diagrams of NGC6819 with the PARSEC isochrones and derived the distance modula, distance and age of the cluster as $μ_{V}=12.22\pm 0.10$ mag, $d=2309\pm106$ pc and $t=2.4\pm0.2$ Gyr, respectively. The parameters of the galactic orbit estimated for NGC 6819 indicate that the cluster is orbiting in a slightly eccentric orbit of $e=0.06$ with a period of $P_{orb}=142$ Myr. The slope of the mass function estimated for the cluster is close to the one found for the stars in the solar neighbourhood.

Local Stellar Kinematics from RAVE data - VII. Metallicity Gradients from Red Clump Stars

We investigate the Milky Way Galaxy's radial and vertical metallicity gradients using a sample of 47,406 red clump stars from the RAVE DR4. This sample is more than twice the size of the largest sample in the literature investigating radial and vertical metallicity gradients. The absolute magnitude of Groenewegen (2008) is used to determine distances to our sample stars. The resulting distances agree with the RAVE DR4 distances Binney et al. (2014) of the same stars. Our photometric method also provides distances to 6185 stars that are not assigned a distance in RAVE DR4. The metallicity gradients are calculated with their current orbital positions ($R_{gc}$ and $Z$) and with their orbital properties (mean Galactocentric distance, $R_{m}$ and $z_{max}$), as a function of the distance to the Galactic plane: d[Fe/H]/d$R_{gc}=$-$0.047\pm0.003$ dex/kpc for $0\leq |Z|\leq0.5$ kpc and d[Fe/H]/d$R_m=$-$0.025\pm0.002$ dex/kpc for $0\leq z_{max}\leq0.5$ kpc. This reaffirms the radial metallicity gradient in the thin disc but highlights that gradients are sensitive to the selection effects caused by the difference between $R_{gc}$ and $R_{m}$. The radial gradient is flat in the distance interval 0.5-1 kpc from the plane and then becomes positive greater than 1 kpc from the plane. The radial metallicity gradients are also eccentricity dependent. We showed that d[Fe/H]/d$R_m=$-$0.089\pm0.010$, -$0.073\pm0.007$, -$0.053\pm0.004$ and -$0.044\pm0.002$ dex/kpc for $e_p\leq0.05$, $e_p\leq0.07$, $e_p\leq0.10$ and $e_p\leq0.20$ sub-samples, respectively, in the distance interval $0\leq z_{max}\leq0.5$ kpc. Similar trend is found for vertical metallicity gradients. Both the radial and vertical metallicity gradients are found to become shallower as the eccentricity of the sample increases. These findings can be used to constrain different formation scenarios of the thick and thin discs.

Metallicity Calibration and Photometric Parallax Estimation: I. UBV photometry

We present metallicity and photometric parallax calibrations for the F and G type dwarfs with photometric, astrometric and spectroscopic data. The sample consists of 168 dwarf stars covering the colour, iron abundance and absolute magnitude intervals $0.30<(B-V)_0<0.68$ mag, $-2.0<[Fe/H]<0.4$ dex and $3.4<M_V<6.0$ mag, respectively. The means and standard deviations of the metallicity and absolute magnitude residuals are small, i.e. $\langleΔ[Fe/H]_{res}\rangle=0$ and $σ=0.134$ dex, and $\langleΔ(M_V)_{res}\rangle=0$ and $σ=0.174$ mag, respectively, which indicate accurate metallicity and photometric parallax estimations.

Photometric Calibration of the [$α$/Fe] Element: I. Calibration with UBV Photometry

We present the calibration of the [$α$/Fe] element in terms of the ultra-violet excess for 469 dwarf stars with $0.325<(B-V)_0 \leq 0.775$ mag corresponding the spectral type range F0-K2. The star sample is separated into nine sub-samples with equal range in $(B-V)_0$ colour, $Δ(B-V)_0=0.05$ mag, and a third degree polynomial is fitted to each dataset. Our calibrations provide [$α$/Fe] elements in the range [0.0, 0.4]. We applied the procedure to two sets of field stars and two sets of clusters. The mean and the corresponding standard deviation of the residuals for 43 field stars taken from the Hypatia catalogue are [$α$/Fe]=-0.090 and $σ=0.102$ dex, while for the 39 ones taken from the same catalogue of stars used in the calibration are [$α$/Fe]=-0.009 and $σ= 0.079$ dex, respectively. We showed that the differences between the mean of the residuals and standard deviations for two sets of clusters ([$α$/Fe]=0.073 and $σ= 0.91$ dex; [$α$/Fe]=-0.012 and $σ= 0.053$ dex) originate from the $(B-V)_0$ and $(U-B)_0$ colour indices of the clusters which are taken from different sources. The differences between the original [$α$/Fe] elements and the estimated ones (the residuals) are compatible with the uncertainties in the literature. Also, there is a good agreement between the distribution of the synthetic alpha elements versus ultra-violet excesses and the ones obtained via our calibrations.

Study of Eclipsing Binary and Multiple Systems in OB Associations IV: Cas OB6 Member DN Cas

An early-type, massive, short-period ($P_{\rm orb}=2^{\rm d}.310951$) eclipsing spectroscopic binary DN Cas has been re-visited with new spectral and photometric data. The masses and radii of the components have been obtained as $M_1=19.04\pm0.07 M_\odot$, $M_2=13.73\pm 0.05M_\odot$ and $R_1=7.22\pm0.06 R_\odot$, $R_2=5.79\pm0.06R_\odot$, respectively. Both components present synchronous rotation ($V_{\rm rot1}=160\,$km s$^{-1}$, $V_{\rm rot2}=130\,$km s$^{-1}$) with their orbit. Orbital period analysis yielded a physically bound additional component in the system with a minimum mass of $M_3=0.88 M_\odot$ orbiting in an eccentric orbit ($e=0.37\pm0.2$) with an orbital period of $P_{12}=42\pm9$ yrs. High precision absolute parameters of the system allowed us to derive a distance to DN Cas as 1.7$\pm$0.2 kpc which locates the system within the borders of the Cas OB6 association (d=1.8 kpc; Mel'nik & Dambis, 2009). The space velocities and the age of DN Cas are in agreement with those of Cas OB6. The age of DN Cas ($τ=$3-5 Myr) is found to be 1-2 Myr older than the embedded clusters (IC 1795, IC 1805 and IC 1848) in the Cas OB6 association, which implies a sequential star formation in the association.

A comprehensive study of the open cluster NGC 6866

We present CCD $UBVRI$ photometry of the field of the open cluster NGC 6866. Structural parameters of the cluster are determined utilizing the stellar density profile of the stars in the field. We calculate the probabilities of the stars being a physical member of the cluster using their astrometric data and perform further analyses using only the most probable members. The reddening and metallicity of the cluster were determined by independent methods. The LAMOST spectra and the ultraviolet excess of the F and G type main-sequence stars in the cluster indicate that the metallicity of the cluster is about the solar value. We estimated the reddening $E(B-V)=0.074 \pm 0.050$ mag using the $U-B$ vs $B-V$ two-colour diagram. The distance modula, the distance and the age of NGC 6866 were derived as $μ= 10.60 \pm 0.10$ mag, $d=1189 \pm 75$ pc and $t = 813 \pm 50$ Myr, respectively, by fitting colour-magnitude diagrams of the cluster with the PARSEC isochrones. The Galactic orbit of NGC 6866 indicates that the cluster is orbiting in a slightly eccentric orbit with $e=0.12$. The mass function slope $x=1.35 \pm 0.08$ was derived by using the most probable members of the cluster.

A New Ranking Scheme for the Institutional Scientific Performance

We propose a new performance indicator to evaluate the productivity of research institutions by their disseminated scientific papers. The new quality measure includes two principle components: the normalized impact factor of the journal in which paper was published, and the number of citations received per year since it was published. In both components, the scientific impacts are weighted by the contribution of authors from the evaluated institution. As a whole, our new metric, namely, the institutional performance score takes into account both journal based impact and articles specific impacts. We apply this new scheme to evaluate research output performance of Turkish institutions specialized in astronomy and astrophysics in the period of 1998-2012. We discuss the implications of the new metric, and emphasize the benefits of it along with comparison to other proposed institutional performance indicators.

Local Stellar Kinematics from RAVE data - VI. Metallicity Gradients Based on the F-G Main-sequence Stars

We estimated iron and metallicity gradients in the radial and vertical directions with the F and G type dwarfs taken from the RAVE DR4 database. The sample defined by the constraints Zmax<=825 pc and ep<=0.10 consists of stars with metal abundances and space velocity components agreeable with the thin-disc stars. The radial iron and metallicity gradients estimated for the vertical distance intervals 0<Zmax<=500 and 500<Zmax<=800 pc are d[Fe/H]/dRm=-0.083(0.030) and d[Fe/H]/dRm=-0.048(0.037 )dex/kpc; and d[M/H]/dRm=-0.063(0.011) and d[M/H]/dRm=-0.028(0.057) dex/kpc, respectively, where Rm is the mean Galactocentric distance. The iron and metallicity gradients for less number of stars at further vertical distances, 800<Zmax<=1500 pc, are mostly positive. Compatible iron and metallicity gradients could be estimated with guiding radius (Rg) for the same vertical distance intervals 0<Zmax<=500 and 500<Zmax<=800 pc, i.e. d[Fe/H]/dRg=-0.083(0.030) and d[Fe/H]/dRg=-0.065(0.039) dex/kpc; d[M/H]/dRg=-0.062(0.018) and d[M/H]/dRg=-0.055(0.045) dex/kpc. F and G type dwarfs on elongated orbits show a complicated radial iron and metallicity gradient distribution in different vertical distance intervals. Significant radial iron and metallicity gradients could be derived neither for the sub-sample stars with Rm<=8 kpc, nor for the ones at larger distances, Rm>8 kpc. The range of the iron and metallicity abundance for the F and G type dwarfs on elongated orbits, [-0.13, -0.01), is similar to the thin-disc stars, while at least half of their space velocity components agree better with those of the thick-disc stars. The vertical iron gradients estimated for the F and G type dwarfs on circular orbits are d[Fe/H]/dZmax=-0.176(0.039) dex/kpc and d[Fe/H]/dZmax=-0.119(0.036) dex/kpc for the intervals Zmax<= 825 and Zmax<=1500 pc, respectively.

Main-Sequence Effective Temperatures from a Revised Mass-Luminosity Relation Based on Accurate Properties

The mass-luminosity (M-L), mass-radius (M-R) and mass-effective temperature ($M-T_{eff}$) diagrams for a subset of galactic nearby main-sequence stars with masses and radii accurate to $\leq 3\%$ and luminosities accurate to $\leq 30\%$ (268 stars) has led to a putative discovery. Four distinct mass domains have been identified, which we have tentatively associated with low, intermediate, high, and very high mass main-sequence stars, but which nevertheless are clearly separated by three distinct break points at 1.05, 2.4, and 7$M_{\odot}$ within the mass range studied of $0.38-32M_{\odot}$. Further, a revised mass-luminosity relation (MLR) is found based on linear fits for each of the mass domains identified. The revised, mass-domain based MLRs, which are classical ($L \propto M^α$), are shown to be preferable to a single linear, quadratic or cubic equation representing as an alternative MLR. Stellar radius evolution within the main-sequence for stars with $M>1M_{\odot}$ is clearly evident on the M-R diagram, but it is not the clear on the $M-T_{eff}$ diagram based on published temperatures. Effective temperatures can be calculated directly using the well-known Stephan-Boltzmann law by employing the accurately known values of M and R with the newly defined MLRs. With the calculated temperatures, stellar temperature evolution within the main-sequence for stars with $M>1M_{\odot}$ is clearly visible on the $M-T_{eff}$ diagram. Our study asserts that it is now possible to compute the effective temperature of a main-sequence star with an accuracy of $\sim 6\%$, as long as its observed radius error is adequately small (<1%) and its observed mass error is reasonably small (<6%).

Solar Space Density of the Red Clump Stars and the Scale-length of the Thin Disc

We estimated the scale-length of the thin disc with the J and W1 magnitudes of the most probable Red Clump (RC) stars in the Galactic plane, $-0\overset{^\circ}.5 \leq b \leq +0\overset{^\circ}.5$, in 19 equal sized fields with consecutive Galactic longitudes which cover the interval $90^\circ \leq l \leq 270^\circ$. Our results are constrained with respect to the solar space density ($D^*=5.95$), which indicates that the radial variation of the density is lower for higher Galactocentric distances. The scale-length of the thin disc is 2 kpc for the fields in the Galactic anticentre direction or close to this direction, while it decreases continuously in the second and third quadrants reaching to a lower limit of $h$ = 1.6 kpc at the Galactic longitudes $l$ = 90$^\circ$ and $l$ = 270$^\circ$. The distribution of the scale-length in 19 fields is consistent with the predictions from the Galaxia model and its variation with longitude is probably due to the inhomogeneity structure of the disc caused by the accreted material or other features such as warp and flare.

The Galactic Kinematics of Cataclysmic Variables

Kinematical properties of CVs were investigated according to population types and orbital periods, using the space velocities computed from recently updated systemic velocities, proper motions and parallaxes. Reliability of collected space velocity data are refined by removing 34 systems with largest space velocity errors. The 216 CVs in the refined sample were shown to have a dispersion of $53.70 \pm 7.41$ km s$^{-1}$ corresponding to a mean kinematical age of $5.29 \pm 1.35$ Gyr. Population types of CVs were identified using their Galactic orbital parameters. According to the population analysis, seven old thin disc, nine thick disc and one halo CV were found in the sample, indicating that 94% of CVs in the Solar Neighbourhood belong to the thin-disc component of the Galaxy. Mean kinematical ages $3.40 \pm 1.03$ and $3.90 \pm 1.28$ Gyr are for the non-magnetic thin-disc CVs below and above the period gap, respectively. There is not a meaningful difference between the velocity dispersions below and above the gap. Velocity dispersions of the non-magnetic thin-disc systems below and above the gap are $24.95 \pm 3.46$ and $26.60 \pm 4.18$ km s$^{-1}$, respectively. This result is not in agreement with the standard formation and evolution theory of CVs. The mean kinematical ages of the CV groups in various orbital period intervals increase towards shorter orbital periods. This is in agreement with the standard theory for the evolution of CVs. Rate of orbital period change was found to be $dP/dt=-1.62(\pm 0.15)\times 10^{-5}$ sec yr$^{-1}$.

Towards Understanding the Nature of Young Detached Binary System HD 350731

The young binary system HD 350731 is a noteworthy laboratory for studying early-type binaries with similar components. We present here the analysis of differential multi-color photometric and spectroscopic observations for the double-lined detached system. Accurate absolute parameters were determined from the simultaneous solution of light and radial velocity curves for the first time. HD 350731 consists of two B8V-type components having masses and radii respectively of $M_{1}=2.91\pm0.13$ M$_{\odot}$, $M_{2}=2.80\pm0.14$ M$_{\odot}$, $R_{1}= 2.11 \pm0.05$ R$_{\odot}$ and $R_{2}=2.07\pm0.05$ R$_{\odot}$. The effective temperatures were determined based on analysis of disentangled spectra of the components and derived to be $12000\pm250$ K and $11830\pm300$ K for the primary and secondary components, respectively. The measured projected rotational velocities, 69.2$\pm$1.5 km s$^{-1}$ for primary and 70.1$\pm$1.7 km s$^{-1}$ for secondary, were found closer to the pseudo-synchronous velocities of the components. Comparison with evolutionary models suggests an age of 120$\pm$35 Myr. Kinematic analysis of the unevolved binary system HD 350731 revealed that it belongs to the young thin-disc population of the Galaxy.

Absolute Magnitude Calibration for Dwarfs Based on the Colour-Magnitude Diagrams of Galactic Clusters

We present two absolute magnitude calibrations for dwarfs based on colour-magnitude diagrams of Galactic clusters. The combination of the $M_g$ absolute magnitudes of the dwarf fiducial sequences of the clusters M92, M13, M5, NGC 2420, M67 and NGC 6791 with the corresponding metallicities provides absolute magnitude calibration for a given $(g-r)_0$ colour. The calibration is defined in the colour interval $0.25\leq (g-r)_0 \leq 1.25$ mag and it covers the metallicity interval $-2.15\leq \lbrack Fe/H\rbrack \leq +0.37$ dex. The absolute magnitude residuals obtained by the application of the procedure to another set of Galactic clusters lie in the interval $-0.15 \leq ΔM_g \leq +0.12$ mag. The mean and standard deviation of the residuals are $<ΔM_g>=-0.002$ and $σ=0.065$ mag, respectively. The calibration of the $M_J$ absolute magnitude in terms of metallicity is carried out by using the fiducial sequences of the clusters M92, M13, 47 Tuc, NGC 2158 and NGC 6791. It is defined in the colour interval $0.90 \leq (V-J)_0 \leq 1.75$ mag and it covers the same metallicity interval of the $M_g$ calibration. The absolute magnitude residuals obtained by the application of the procedure to the cluster M5 ($\lbrack Fe/H\rbrack=-1.40$ dex) and 46 solar metallicity, $-0.45 \leq \lbrack Fe/H\rbrack \leq +0.35$ dex, field stars lie in the interval -0.29 and +0.35 mag. However, the range of 87 per cent of them is rather shorter, $-0.2 \leq ΔM_J \leq +0.2$ mag. The mean and standard deviation of all residuals are $<ΔM_J>=0.05$ and $σ$=0.13 mag, respectively. The derived relations are applicable to stars older than 4 Gyr for the $M_g$ calibration, and older than 2 Gyr for the $M_J$ calibration. The cited limits are the ages of the youngest calibration clusters in the two systems.

CCD UBVRI photometry of NGC 6811

We present the results of CCD UBVRI observations of the open cluster NGC 6811 obtained on 18th July 2012 with the 1m telescope at the TÜBİTAK National Observatory (TUG). Using these photometric results, we determine the structural and astrophysical parameters of the cluster. The mean photometric uncertainties are better than 0.02 mag in the V magnitude and B-V, V-R, and V-I colour indices to about 0.03 mag for U-B among stars brighter than magnitude V=18. Cluster member stars were separated from the field stars using the Galaxia model of Sharma et al. (2011) together with other techniques. The core radius of the cluster is found to be $r_{c}$=3.60 arcmin. The astrophysical parameters were determined simultaneously via Bayesian statistics using the colour-magnitude diagrams V versus B-V, V versus V-I, V versus V-R, and V versus R-I of the cluster. The resulting most likely parameters were further confirmed using independent methods, removing any possible degeneracies. The colour excess, distance modulus, metallicity and the age of the cluster are determined simultaneously as E(B-V)=0.05$\pm$0.01 mag, $μ=10.06\pm0.08$ mag, [M/H]=-0.10$\pm$0.01 dex and t=1.00$\pm$0.05 Gyr, respectively. Distances of five red clump stars which were found to be members of the cluster further confirm our distance estimation.

Colour Transformations between BVRc and g'r'i' Photometric Systems for Giant Stars

The transformation equations from $BVR_c$ to $g'r'i'$ magnitudes and vice versa for the giants were established from a sample of 80 stars collected from Soubiran et al. (2010) with confirmed surface gravity ($2\leq \log g$ (cms$^{-2}$)$ \leq3$) at effective temperatures $4000<T_{eff} (K)<16000$. The photometric observations, all sample stars at $g'r'i'$ and 65 of them at $BVR_c$, were obtained at TÜBİTAK National Observatory (TUG) 1m (T100) telescope, on the Taurus Mountains in Turkey. The $M_V$ absolute magnitudes of the giant stars were estimated from the absolute magnitude-temperature data for the giant stars by Sung et al. (2013) using the $T_{eff}$ from the intrinsic colours considered in this study. The transformation equations could be considered to be valid through the ranges of the following magnitudes and colours involved: $7.10<V_0<14.50$, $7.30<g'_0<14.85$, $-0.20<(B-V)_0<1.41$, $-0.11<(V-R_c)_0<0.73$, $-0.42<(g'-r')_0<1.15$, and $-0.37<(r'-i')_0<0.47$ mag. The transformations were successfully applied to the synthetic $BVR_c$ data of 427 field giants in order to obtain the $g'r'i'$ magnitudes and colours. Comparisons of these data with the $g'r'i'$ observations of giants in this study show that the mean residuals and standard deviations lie within [-0.010, 0.042] and [0.028, 0.068] mag, respectively.

Effective Temperatures of Selected Main-sequence Stars with Most Accurate Parameters

In this study, the distributions of the double-lined detached binaries (DBs) on the planes of mass-luminosity, mass radius and mass-effective temperature have been studied. We improved the classical mass-luminosity relation based on the database of DBs by Eker et al. (2004a). With accurate observational data available to us, a method for improving effective temperatures for eclipsing binaries with accurate masses and radii were suggested.

Galactic model parameters of cataclysmic variables: Results from a new absolute magnitude calibration with 2MASS and WISE

In order to determine the spatial distribution, Galactic model parameters and luminosity function of cataclysmic variables (CVs), a $J$-band magnitude limited sample of 263 CVs has been established using a newly constructed period-luminosity-colours (PLCs) relation which includes $J$, $K_{s}$ and $W1$-band magnitudes in 2MASS and WISE photometries, and the orbital periods of the systems. This CV sample is assumed to be homogeneous regarding to distances as the new PLCs relation is calibrated with new or re-measured trigonometric parallaxes. Our analysis shows that the scaleheight of CVs is increasing towards shorter periods, although selection effects for the periods shorter than 2.25 h dramatically decrease the scaleheight: the scaleheight of the systems increases from 192 pc to 326 pc as the orbital period decreases from 12 to 2.25h. The $z$-distribution of all CVs in the sample is well fitted by an exponential function with a scaleheight of 213$^{+11}_{-10}$ pc. However, we suggest that the scaleheight of CVs in the Solar vicinity should be $\sim$300 pc and that the scaleheights derived using the sech$^2$ function should be also considered in the population synthesis models. The space density of CVs in the Solar vicinity is found 5.58(1.35)$\times 10^{-6}$ pc$^{-3}$ which is in the range of previously derived space densities and not in agreement with the predictions of the population models. The analysis based on the comparisons of the luminosity function of white dwarfs with the luminosity function of CVs in this study show that the best fits are obtained by dividing the luminosity functions of white dwarfs by a factor of 350-450.

Local stellar kinematics from RAVE data- V. Kinematic investigation of the Galaxy with red clump stars

We investigated the space velocity components of 6610 red clump (RC) stars in terms of vertical distance, Galactocentric radial distance and Galactic longitude. Stellar velocity vectors are corrected for differential rotation of the Galaxy which is taken into account using photometric distances of RC stars. The space velocity components estimated for the sample stars above and below the Galactic plane are compatible only for the space velocity component in the direction to the Galactic rotation of the thin disc stars. The space velocity component in the direction to the Galactic rotation (V) shows a smooth variation relative to the mean Galactocentric radial distance (Rm), while it attains its maximum at the Galactic plane. The space velocity components in the Galactic centre (U) and in the vertical direction (W) show almost flat distributions relative to Rm with small changes in their trends at Rm=7.5 kpc. U values estimated for the RC stars in quadrant 180<l<=270 are larger than the ones in quadrants 0<l<=90 and 270<l<=360. The smooth distribution of the space velocity dispersions reveals that the thin and thick discs are kinematically continuous components of the Galaxy. Based on the W space velocity components estimated in the quadrants 0<l<=90 and 270<l<=360, in the inward direction relative to the Sun, we showed that RC stars above the Galactic plane move towards the North Galactic Pole, whereas those below the Galactic plane move in the opposite direction. In the case of quadrant 180<l<=270, their behaviour is different, i.e. the RC stars above and below the Galactic plane move towards the Galactic plane. We stated that the Galactic long bar is the probable origin of many, but not all, of the detected features.

Study of Eclipsing Binary and Multiple Systems in OB Associations II. The Cygnus OB Region: V443 Cyg, V456 Cyg and V2107 Cyg

Three presumably young eclipsing binary systems in the direction of the Cygnus OB1, OB3 and OB9 associations are studied. Component spectra are reconstructed and their orbits are determined using light curves and spectra disentangling techniques. V443 Cyg and V456 Cyg have circular orbits, while the light curve of V2107\,Cyg imposes a slightly eccentric orbit ($e=0.045\pm0.03)$. V443 Cyg harbours F-type stars, and not young early-A stars as previously suggested in the literature based on photometry solely. It appears to be situated in the foreground (distance $0.6\pm0.2$ kpc) of the young stellar populations in Cygnus. V456 Cyg, at a distance of $0.50\pm0.03$ kpc consists of a slightly metal-weak A--type and an early--F star. The age of both systems, on or very near to the main sequence, remains uncertain by an order of magnitude. V2107 Cyg is a more massive system ($8.9\pm2$ and $4.5\pm1.2 M_\odot$) at $1.5\pm0.5$ kpc and, also kinematically, a strong candidate-member of Cyg OB1. The more massive component is slightly evolved and appears to undergo non-radial $βCep$-type pulsations. The Doppler signal of the secondary is barely detectable. A more extensive study is important to fix masses more precisely, and an asteroseismological study would then become appropriate. Nevertheless, the position of the primary in the HR-diagram confines the age already reasonably well to $20\pm5$ Myr, indicating for Cyg OB1 a similar extent of star formation history as established for Cyg OB2.

The Catalogue of Stellar Parameters from the Detached Double-Lined Eclipsing Binaries in the Milky Way

The most accurate stellar astrophysical parameters were collected from the solutions of the light and the radial velocity curves of 257 detached double-lined eclipsing binaries in the Milky Way. The catalogue contains masses, radii, surface gravities, effective temperatures, luminosities, projected rotational velocities of the component stars and the orbital parameters. The number of stars with accurate parameters increased 67 per cent in comparison to the most recent similar collection by Torres et al. (2010). Distributions of some basic parameters were investigated. The ranges of effective temperatures, masses and radii are $2750<T_{eff}$(K)$<43000$, $0.18<M/M_{\odot}<33$ and $0.2<R/R_{\odot}<21.2$, respectively. Being mostly located in one kpc in the Solar neighborhood, the present sample covers distances up to 4.6 kpc within the two local Galactic arms Carina-Sagittarius and Orion Spur. The number of stars with both mass and radius measurements better than 1 per cent uncertainty is 93, better than 3 per cent uncertainty is 311, and better than 5 per cent uncertainty is 388. It is estimated from the Roche lobe filling factors that 455 stars (88.5 per cent of the sample) are spherical within 1 per cent of uncertainty.

Transit Timing Analysis in the HAT-P-32 system

We present the results of 45 transit observations obtained for the transiting exoplanet HAT-P-32b. The transits have been observed using several telescopes mainly throughout the YETI network. In 25 cases, complete transit light curves with a timing precision better than $1.4\:$min have been obtained. These light curves have been used to refine the system properties, namely inclination $i$, planet-to-star radius ratio $R_\textrm{p}/R_\textrm{s}$, and the ratio between the semimajor axis and the stellar radius $a/R_\textrm{s}$. First analyses by Hartman et al. (2011) suggest the existence of a second planet in the system, thus we tried to find an additional body using the transit timing variation (TTV) technique. Taking also literature data points into account, we can explain all mid-transit times by refining the linear ephemeris by 21ms. Thus we can exclude TTV amplitudes of more than $\sim1.5$min.

A New Absolute Magnitude Calibration for Red Clump Stars

We present an M_V absolute magnitude calibration including the B-V colour and [Fe/H] metallicity for the red clump stars in the globular and open clusters with a wide range of metallicities: M_V = 0.627(0.104)(B-V)o+0.046(0.043)[Fe/H]+0.262(0.111). The calibration equation is valid in the ranges 0.42<(B-V)o<1.20 mag, -1.55<[Fe/H]<+0.40 dex and 0.43<M_V<1.03 mag. We found that the consistencies in the comparisons of the distances estimated from the calibration equation in this study both with the distances obtained from trigonometric parallaxes and spectrophotometric analysis demonstrate that reliable precise absolute magnitudes for the clump giants can be estimated from the calibration formula.

Absolute Magnitude Calibration for Red Clump Stars

We combined the ($K_s$, $J-K_s$) data in Laney et al. (2012) with the $V$ apparent magnitudes and trigonometric parallaxes taken from the Hipparcos catalogue and used them to fit the $M_{K_s}$ absolute magnitude to a linear polynomial in terms of $V-K_s$ colour. The mean and standard deviation of the absolute magnitude residuals, -0.001 and 0.195 mag, respectively, estimated for 224 red clump stars in Laney et al. 2012 are (absolutely) smaller than the corresponding ones estimated by the procedure which adopts a mean $M_{K_s}=-1.613$ mag absolute magnitude for all red clump stars, -0.053 and 0.218 mag, respectively. The statistics estimated by applying the linear equation to the data of 282 red clump stars in Alves (2000) are larger, $ΔM_{K_s}=0.209$ and $σ=0.524$ mag, which can be explained by a different absolute magnitude trend, i.e. condensation along a horizontal distribution.

First identification and absolute magnitudes of the red clump stars in the Solar neighbourhood for WISE

We present the first determination of absolute magnitudes for the red clump (RC) stars with the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE). We used recently reduced parallaxes taken from the Hipparcos catalogue and identified 3889 RC stars with the WISE photometry in the Solar neighbourhood. Mode values estimated from the distributions of absolute magnitudes and a colour of the RC stars in WISE photometry are M_{W1}=-1.635(0.026), M_{W3}=-1.606(0.024) and (W1-W3)_0=-0.028(0.001) mag. These values are consistent with those obtained from the transformation formulae using 2MASS data. Distances of the RC stars estimated by using their M_{W1} and M_{W3} absolute magnitudes are in agreement with the ones calculated by the spectrophotometric method, as well. These WISE absolute magnitudes can be used in astrophysical researches where distance plays an important role.

Local stellar kinematics from RAVE data: IV. Solar neighbourhood age-metallicity relation

We investigated the age-metallicity relation using a sample of 5691 F and G type dwarfs from RAVE DR3 by applying several constraints: i) We selected stars with surface gravities log g < 3.8 and effective temperatures in the 5310<T_{eff}(K)<7300 range and obtained a dwarf sample. ii) We plotted the dwarfs in metallicity sub-samples in the T_{eff}-(J-K_s)_0 plane to compare with the corresponding data of Gonzalez Hernandez & Bonifacio (2009) and identified the ones in agreement. iii) We fitted the reduced dwarf sample obtained from constraints (i) and (ii) to the Padova isochrones and re-identified those which occupy the plane defined by isochrones with ages t < 13 Gyr. iv) Finally, we omitted dwarfs with total velocity errors larger than 10.63 km/s. We estimated the ages using the Bayesian procedure of Jorgensen & Lindegren (2005). The largest age-metallicity slope was found for early F-type dwarfs. We found steeper slopes when we plotted the data as a function of spectral type rather than Galactic population. We noticed a substantial scatter in metallicity distribution at all ages. The metal-rich old dwarfs turned out to be G-type stars which can be interpreted as they migrated from the inner disc or bulge.

The early-type near-contact binary system V337 Aql revisited

The close binary V337 Aql consists of two early B-type components with an orbital period of 2.7339 d. New multi-band photometric observations of the system together with published radial velocities enabled us to derive the absolute parameters of the components. The simultaneous light and radial velocity curves solution yields masses and radii of \emph{M$_{1}$}=17.44$\pm$0.31 \emph{M$_\odot$} and \emph{R$_{1}$}=9.86$\pm$0.06 \emph{R$_\odot$} for the primary and \emph{M$_{2}$}=7.83$\pm$0.18 \emph{M$_\odot$} and \emph{R$_{2}$}=7.48$\pm$0.04 \emph{R$_\odot$} for the secondary component. Derived fundamental parameters allow us to calculate the photometric distance as 1355$\pm$160 pc. The present analysis indicates that the system is a near-contact semi-detached binary, in which a primary star is inside its Roche lobe with a filling ratio of 92 percent and the secondary star fills its Roche lobe. From \emph{O-C} data analysis, an orbital period decrease was determined with a rate of -7.6 $\times$ 10$^{-8}$ yr$^{-1}$. Kinematic analysis reveals that V337 Aql has a circular orbit in the Galaxy and belongs to a young thin-disc population.

Absolute Magnitude Calibration for Giants based on the Colour-Magnitude Diagrams of Galactic Clusters. II-Calibration with SDSS

We present an absolute magnitude calibration for red giants with the colour magnitude diagrams of six Galactic clusters with different metallicities i.e. M92, M13, M3, M71, NGC 6791 and NGC 2158. The combination of the absolute magnitudes of the red giant sequences with the corresponding metallicities provides calibration for absolute magnitude estimation for red giants for a given $(g-r)_{0}$ colour. The calibration is defined in the colour interval 0.45 $\leq(g-r)_{0}\leq$ 1.30 mag and it covers the metallicity interval $-2.15\leq \lbrack Fe/H \rbrack \leq$ +0.37 dex. The absolute magnitude residuals obtained by the application of the procedure to another set of Galactic clusters lie in the interval $-0.28< ΔM \leq +0.43$ mag. However, the range of 94% of the residuals is shorter, $-0.1<ΔM \leq+0.4$ mag. The mean and the standard deviation of (all) residuals are 0.169 and 0.140 mag, respectively. The derived relations are applicable to stars older than 2 Gyr, the age of the youngest calibrating cluster.

Absolute Magnitude Calibration for Red Giants based on the Colour-Magnitude Diagrams of Galactic Clusters. I- Calibration with V and (B-V)

We present an absolute magnitude calibration for red giants with the colour magnitude diagrams of six Galactic clusters with different metallicities i.e. M92, M13, M5, 47 Tuc, M67, and NGC 6791. The combination of the absolute magnitude offset from the fiducial of giant sequence of the cluster M5 with the corresponding metallicity offset provides calibration for absolute magnitude estimation for red giants for a given (B-V)o colour. The calibration is defined in the colour interval 0.75<=(B-V)o<=1.50 mag and it covers the metallicity interval -2.15<[Fe/H]<=+0.37 dex. 91% of the absolute magnitude residuals obtained by the application of the procedure to another set of Galactic clusters lie in the interval -0.40<ΔM<=+0.40 mag. The mean and the standard deviation of the residuals are 0.05 and 0.19 mag, respectively. We fitted the absolute magnitude also to metallicity and age for a limited sub-sample of (B-V)o colour, just to test the effect of age in absolute magnitude calibration. Comparison of the mean and the standard deviation of the residuals evaluated by this procedure with the corresponding ones provided by the procedure where the absolute magnitude fitted to a third degree polynomial of metallicity show that the age parameter may be omitted in absolute magnitude estimation of red giants. The derived relations are applicable to stars older than 4 Gyr, the age of the youngest calibrating cluster.

Absolute Magnitude Calibration for Red Giants based on the Colour-Magnitude Diagrams of Galactic Clusters. III-Calibration with 2MASS

The combination of the absolute magnitudes of the red giant sequences with the corresponding metallicities provides calibration for absolute magnitude estimation for red giants for a given colour. The calibrations for $M_{J}$ and $M_{K_s}$ are defined in the colour intervals $1.3\leq(V-J)_{0}\leq2.8$ and $1.75 \leq (V-K_{s})_{0}\leq 3.80$ mag, respectively, and they cover the metallicity interval $-2.15 \leq \lbrack Fe/H \rbrack \leq +0.37$ dex. The absolute magnitude residuals obtained by the application of the procedure to another set of Galactic clusters lie in the intervals $-0.08<ΔM_{J}\leq +0.34$ and $-0.10< ΔM_{K_s}\leq +0.27$ mag for $M_{J}$ and $M_{K_s}$, respectively. The means and standard deviations of the residuals are $<ΔM_{J}>= 0.137$ and $σ_{M_J}=0.080$, and $<ΔM_{K_s}>=0.109$ and $σ_{M_{K_{s}}}=0.123$ mag. The derived relations are applicable to stars older than 4 Gyr, the age of the youngest calibrating cluster.

Local stellar kinematics from RAVE data: III. Radial and Vertical Metallicity Gradients based on Red Clump Stars

We investigate radial and vertical metallicity gradients for a sample of red clump stars from the RAdial Velocity Experiment (RAVE) Data Release 3. We select a total of 6781 stars, using a selection of colour, surface gravity and uncertainty in the derived space motion, and calculate for each star a probabilistic (kinematic) population assignment to a thin or thick disc using space motion and additionally another (dynamical) assignment using stellar vertical orbital eccentricity. We derive almost equal metallicity gradients as a function of Galactocentric distance for the high probability thin disc stars and for stars with vertical orbital eccentricities consistent with being dynamically young, e_v<=0.07, i.e. d[M/H]/dR_m = -0.041(0.003) and d[M/H]/dR_m = -0.041(0.007) dex/kpc. Metallicity gradients as a function of distance from the Galactic plane for the same populations are steeper, i.e. d[M/H]/dz_{max} = -0.109(0.008) and d[M/H]/dz_{max} = -0.260(0.031) dex/kpc, respectively. R_m and z_{max} are the arithmetic mean of the perigalactic and apogalactic distances, and the maximum distance to the Galactic plane, respectively. Samples including more thick disc red clump giant stars show systematically shallower abundance gradients. These findings can be used to distinguish between different formation scenarios of the thick and thin discs.

Luminosity-Colour Relations for Red Clump Stars

We calibrated the $M_V$, $M_J$, $M_{K_s}$ and $M_g$ absolute magnitudes of red clump stars in terms of colours. $M_V$ and $M_g$ are strongly dependent on colour, while the dependence of $M_J$ and $M_{K_s}$ on colour is rather weak. The calibration of $M_V$ and $M_{K_s}$ absolute magnitudes is tested on 101 RC stars in the field SA 141. The Galactic model parameters estimated with this sample are in good agreement with earlier studies.

Population types of cataclysmic variables in the solar neighbourhood

The Galactic orbital parameters of 159 cataclysmic variables in the Solar neighbourhood are calculated, for the first time, to determine their population types using published kinematical parameters. Population analysis shows that about 6 per cent of cataclysmic variables in the sample are members of the thick disc component of the Galaxy. This value is consistent with the fraction obtained from star count analysis. The rest of the systems in the sample are found to be in the thin disc component of the Galaxy. Our analysis revealed no halo CVs in the Solar vicinity. About 60 per cent of the thick disc CVs have orbital periods below the orbital period gap. This result is roughly consistent with the predictions of population synthesis models developed for cataclysmic variables. A kinematical age of 13 Gyr is obtained using total space velocity dispersion of the most probable thick disc CVs which is consistent with the age of thick disc component of the Galaxy.

Research Performance of Turkish Astronomers in the Period of 1980-2010

We investigated the development of astronomy and astrophysics research productivity in Turkey in terms of publication output and their impacts as reflected in the Science Citation Index (SCI) for the period 1980-2010. It includes 838 refereed publications, including 801 articles, 16 letters, 15 reviews, and six research notes. The number of papers were prominently increased after 2000 and the average number of papers per researcher is calculated as 0.89. Total number of received citations for 838 papers is 6938, while number of citations per papers is approximately 8.3 in 30 years. Publication performance of Turkish astronomers and astrophysicists was compared with those of seven countries that have similar gross domestic expenditures on research and development, and members of Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Our study reveals that the output of astronomy and astrophysics research in Turkey has gradually increased over the years.

Transformations between WISE and 2MASS, SDSS, BVI photometric systems: II. Transformation equations for red clump stars

We present colour transformations for the conversion of the Wide-Field Survey Explorer (WISE) W1, W2, and W3 magnitudes to the Johnson-Cousins (BVIc), Sloan Digital Sky Survey (gri), and Two Micron All Sky Survey JHKs photometric systems, for red clump (RC) stars. RC stars were selected from the Third Radial Velocity Experiment (RAVE) Data Release (DR3). The apparent magnitudes were collected by matching the coordinates of this sample with different photometric catalogues. The final sample (355 RC stars) used to obtain metallicity dependent-and free of metallicity- transformations between WISE and Johnson-Cousins, SDSS, 2MASS photometric systems. These transformations combined with known absolute magnitudes at shorter wavelengths can be used in space density determinations for the Galactic (thin and thick) discs at distances larger than the ones evaluated with JHKs photometry alone, hence providing a powerful tool in the analysis of Galactic structure.

An Improved Metallicity Calibration with UBV Photometry

We used the data of 701 stars covering the colour index interval 0.32<B-V<=1.16, with metallicities -1.76<=[Fe/H]<=+0.40 dex, which were taken from PASTEL catalogue and estimated metallicity dependent guillotine factors which provide a more accurate metallicity calibration. We reduced the metallicities of 11 authors to the metallicities of Valenti & Fischer (2005), thus obtained a homogeneous set of data which increased the accuracy of the calibration, i.e. [Fe/H]=-14.316*delta^{2}_{0.6}-3.557*delta_{0.6}+0.105. Comparison of the metallicity residuals, for two sets of data, based on the metallicity dependent guillotine factors with the ones obtained via metal free guillotine factors, shows that metallicities estimated by means of new guillotine factors are more accurate than the other ones. This advantage can be used in the metallicity gradient investigation of the Galactic components, i.e. thin disc, thick disc and halo.

Identification of field dwarfs and giants in RAVE

The second RAdial Velocity Experiment (RAVE) Data Release (DR2) derives log g values but we present a simpler and cleaner method of identifying dwarfs and giants using only magnitudes, which does not require spectroscopic analysis. We confirm the Bilir et al. (2006) procedure which estimates the number of dwarfs and giants via their positions in the J-V two magnitude diagram by applying it to RAVE DR2. It is effective in estimating the number of dwarfs and giants at J-H>0.4 compared to RAVE's log g values. For J-H<=0.4, where dwarfs and subgiants show a continuous transition in the J magnitude histogram, we used the Besancon Galaxy model predictions to statistically isolate giants. The percentages of giants for red stars and for the whole sample are 85% and 34%, respectively. If we add the subgiants, the percentage of evolved stars for the whole sample raises to 59%. For the first time in the literature, we analysed the effect of CHISQ on RAVE's log g values (CHISQ is the penalised chi^2 from RAVE's technique of finding an optimal match between the observed spectrum and synthetic spectra to derive stellar parameters). Neither the CHISQ values nor the signal-to-noise ratio bias RAVE log g values. Therefore the method of identifying dwarfs and giants via the two magnitude diagram has been verified against an unbiased dataset.

We additionally subsample by colour, to provide samples biased to young thin disc and to older thin disc stars. We derive a metallicity gradient as a function of Galactocentric radial distance, i.e. d[M/H]/dR_m=-0.051+/-0.005 dex kpc^-1, for the youngest sample, F-type stars with vertical orbital eccentricities e_V<=0.04. Study of Eclipsing Binary and Multiple Systems in OB Associations: I. Ori OB1a - IM Mon

All available photometric and spectroscopic observations were collected and used as the basis of a detailed analysis of the close binary IM Mon. The orbital period of the binary was refined to 1.19024249(0.00000014) days. The Roche equipotentials, fractional luminosities (in (B, V) and H_p bands) and fractional radii for the component stars in addition to mass ratio q, inclination i of the orbit and the effective temperature T_eff of the secondary cooler less massive component were obtained by the analysis of light curves. IM Mon is classified to be a detached binary system in contrast to the contact configuration estimations in the literature. The absolute parameters of IM Mon were derived by the simultaneous solutions of light and radial velocity curves as M_1,2=5.50(0.24)M_o and 3.32(0.16)M_o, R1,2=3.15(0.04)R_o and 2.36(0.03)R_o, T_eff1,2=17500(350) K and 14500(550) K implying spectral types of B4 and B6.5 ZAMS stars for the primary and secondary components respectively. The modelling of the high resolution spectrum revealed the rotational velocities of the component stars as V_rot1=147(15) km/s and V_rot2=90(25) km/s. The photometric distance of 353(59) pc was found more precise and reliable than Hipparcos distance of 341(85) pc. An evolutionary age of 11.5(1.5) Myr was obtained for IM Mon. Kinematical and dynamical analysis support the membership of the young thin-disk population system IM Mon to the Ori OB1a association dynamically. Finally, we derived the distance, age and metallicity information of Ori OB1a sub-group using the information of IM Mon parameters.

Transformations between WISE, 2MASS, SDSS and BVRI photometric systems: I. Transformation equations for dwarfs

We present colour transformations for the conversion of the W1 and W2 magnitudes of WISE photometric system to the Johnson-Cousins' BVRI, SDSS (gri), and 2MASS (JHK_s) photometric systems, for dwarfs. The W3 and W4 magnitudes were not considered due to their insufficient signal to noise ratio (S/N). The coordinates of 825 dwarfs along with their BVRI, gri, and JHK_s data, taken from Bilir et al. (2008) were matched with the coordinates of stars in the preliminary data release of WISE (Wright et al., 2010) and a homogeneous dwarf sample with high S/N ratio have been obtained using the following constraints: 1) the data were dereddened, 2) giants were identified and excluded from the sample, 3) sample stars were selected according to data quality, 4) transformations were derived for sub samples of different metallicity range, and 5) transformations are two colour dependent. These colour transformations, coupled with known absolute magnitudes at shorter wavelenghts, can be used in space density evaluation for the Galactic (thin and thick) discs, at distances larger than the ones evaluated with JHK_s photometry.

Absolute Dimensions and Apsidal Motion of the Young Detached System LT Canis Majoris

New high resolution spectra of the short period (P~1.76 days) young detached binary LT CMa are reported for the first time. By combining the results from the analysis of new radial velocity curves and published light curves, we determine values for the masses, radii and temperatures as follows: M_1= 5.59 (0.20) M_o, R_1=3.56 (0.07) R_o and T_eff1= 17000 (500) K for the primary and M_2=3.36 (0.14) M_o, R_2= 2.04 (0.05) R_o and T_eff2= 13140 (800) K for the secondary. Static absorbtion features apart from those coming from the close binary components are detected in the several spectral regions. If these absorbtion features are from a third star, as the light curve solutions support, its radial velocity is measured to be RV_3=70(8) km s^-1. The orbit of the binary system is proved to be eccentric (e=0.059) and thus the apsidal motion exists. The estimated linear advance in longitude of periastron corresponds to an apsidal motion of U=694+/-5 yr for the system. The average internal structure constant log k_2,obs=-2.53 of LT CMa is found smaller than its theoretical value of log k_2,theo=-2.22 suggesting the stars would have more central concentration in mass. The photometric distance of LT CMa (d=535+/-45 pc) is found to be much smaller than the distance of CMa OB1 association (1150 pc) which rules out membership. A comparison with current stellar evolution models for solar metallicity indicates that LT CMa (35 Myr) is much older than the CMa OB1 association (3 Myr), confirming that LT CMa is not a member of CMa OB1. The kinematical and dynamical analysis indicate LT CMa is orbiting the Galaxy in a circular orbit and belongs to the young thin-disk population.

Local Stellar Kinematics from RAVE Data: I. Local Standard of Rest

We analyze a sample of 82850 stars from the RAVE survey, with well-determined velocities and stellar parameters, to isolate a sample of 18026 high-probability thin-disc dwarfs within 600 pc of the Sun. We derive space motions for these stars, and deduce the solar space velocity with respect to the Local Standard of Rest. The peculiar solar motion we derive is in excellent agreement in radial $U_{\odot}$ and vertical $W_{\odot}$ peculiar motions with other recent determinations. Our derived tangential peculiar velocity, $V_{\odot}$ agrees with very recent determinations, which favour values near 13 km s$^{-1}$, in disagreement with earlier studies. The derived values are not significantly dependent on the comparison sample chosen, or on the method of analysis. The local galaxy seems very well dynamically relaxed, in a near symmetric potential.

Transformations between 2MASS, SDSS and BVI photometric systems for late-type giants

We present colour transformations from Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS) photometric system to Johnson-Cousins system and to Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) system for late-type giants and vice versa. The giant star sample was formed using surface gravity constraints ($2 < \log g \leq 3$) to Cayrel de Strobel et al.\rq s (2001) spectroscopic catalogue. 2MASS, SDSS and Johnson-Cousins photometric data was taken from Cutri et al. (2003), Ofek (2008) and van Leeuwen (2007), respectively. The final sample was refined applying the following steps: (1) the data were dereddened, (2) the sample stars selected are of the highest photometric quality. We give two--colour dependent transformations as a function of metallicity as well as independent of metallicity. The transformations provide absolute magnitudes and distance determinations which can be used in space density evaluations at relatively short distances where some or all of the SDSS magnitudes of late-type giants are saturated.

A Universal Vertical Stellar Density Distribution Law for the Galaxy

We reduced the observational logarithmic space densities in the vertical direction up to 8 kpc from the galactic plane, for stars with absolute magnitudes (5,6], (6,7] and [5,10] in the fields $#$0952+5245 and SA114, to a single exponential density law. One of three parameters in the quadratic expression of the density law corresponds to the local space density for stars with absolute magnitudes in question. There is no need of any definition for scaleheights or population types. We confirm with the arguments of non-discrete thin and thick discs for our Galaxy and propose a single structure up to several kiloparsecs from the galactic plane. The logarithmic space densities evaluated by this law for the ELAIS field fit to the observational ones. Whereas, there are considerable offsets for the logarithmic space densities produced by two sets of classical galactic model parameters from the observational ones, for the same field.

CCD BV and 2MASS photometric study of the open cluster NGC 1513

We present CCD BV and JHK$_{s}$ 2MASS photometric data for the open cluster NGC 1513. We observed 609 stars in the direction of the cluster up to a limiting magnitude of $V\sim19$ mag. The star count method shows that the centre of the cluster lies at $α_{2000}=04^{h}09^{m}36^{s}$, $δ_{2000}=49^{\circ}28^{'}43^{''}$ and its angular size is $r=10$ arcmin. The optical and near-infrared two-colour diagrams reveal the colour excesses in the direction of the cluster as $E(B-V)=0.68\pm0.06$, $E(J-H)=0.21\pm0.02$ and $E(J-K_{s})=0.33\pm0.04$ mag. These results are consistent with normal interstellar extinction values. Optical and near-infrared Zero Age Main-Sequences (ZAMS) provided an average distance modulus of $(m-M)_{0}=10.80\pm0.13$ mag, which can be translated into a distance of $1440\pm80$ pc. Finally, using Padova isochrones we determined the metallicity and age of the cluster as $Z=0.015\pm 0.004$ ($[M/H]=-0.10 \pm 0.10$ dex) and $\log (t/yr) = 8.40\pm0.04$, respectively.

SDSS Absolute Magnitudes for Thin Disc Stars based on Trigonometric Parallaxes

We present a new luminosity-colour relation based on trigonometric parallaxes for thin disc main-sequence stars in SDSS photometry. We matched stars from the newly reduced Hipparcos catalogue with the ones taken from 2MASS All-Sky Catalogue of Point Sources, and applied a series of constraints, i.e. relative parallax errors ($σ_π/π\leq0.05$), metallicity ($-0.30\leq[M/H]\leq0.20$ dex), age ($0\leq t \leq 10$ Gyr) and surface gravity ($\log g>4$), and obtained a sample of thin disc main-sequence stars. Then, we used our previous transformation equations (Bilir et al. 2008a) between SDSS and 2MASS photometries and calibrated the $M_{g}$ absolute magnitudes to the $(g-r)_{0}$ and $(r-i)_0$ colours. The transformation formulae between 2MASS and SDSS photometries along with the absolute magnitude calibration provide space densities for bright stars which saturate the SDSS magnitudes.

The age of cataclysmic variables: a kinematical study

Using available astrometric and radial velocity data, the space velocities of cataclysmic variables (CVs) with respect to Sun were computed and kinematical properties of various sub-groups of CVs were investigated. Although observational errors of systemic velocities ($γ$) are high, propagated errors are usually less than computed dispersions. According to the analysis of propagated uncertainties on the computed space velocities, available sample is refined by removing the systems with the largest propagated uncertainties so that the reliability of the space velocity dispersions was improved. Having a dispersion of $51\pm7$ km s$^{-1}$ for the space velocities, CVs in the current refined sample (159 systems) are found to have $5\pm1$ Gyr mean kinematical age. After removing magnetic systems from the sample, it is found that non-magnetic CVs (134 systems) have a mean kinematical age of $4\pm1$ Gyr. According to $5\pm1$ and $4\pm1$ Gyr kinematical ages implied by $52\pm8$ and $45\pm7$ km s$^{-1}$ dispersions for non-magnetic systems below and above the period gap, CVs below the period gap are older than systems above the gap, which is a result in agreement with the standard evolution theory of CVs. Age difference between the systems below and above the gap is smaller than that expected from the standard theory, indicating a similarity of the angular momentum loss time scales in systems with low-mass and high-mass secondary stars. Assuming an isotropic distribution, $γ$ velocity dispersions of non-magnetic CVs below and above the period gap are calculated $σ_γ=30\pm5$ km s$^{-1}$ and $σ_γ=26\pm4$ km s$^{-1}$.

Transformations between 2MASS, SDSS and BVRI photometric systems: bridging the near infrared and optical

We present colour transformations for the conversion of the {\em 2MASS} photometric system to the Johnson-Cousins $UBVRI$ system and further into the {\em SDSS} $ugriz$ system. We have taken {\em SDSS} $gri$ magnitudes of stars measured with the 2.5-m telescope from $SDSS$ Data Release 5 (DR5), and $BVRI$ and $JHK_{s}$ magnitudes from Stetson's catalogue and \citet{Cu03}, respectively. We matched thousands of stars in the three photometric systems by their coordinates and obtained a homogeneous sample of 825 stars by the following constraints, which are not used in previous transformations: 1) the data are de-reddened, 2) giants are omitted, and 3) the sample stars selected are of the highest quality. We give metallicity, population type, and transformations dependent on two colours. The transformations provide absolute magnitude and distance determinations which can be used in space density evaluations at short distances where some or all of the {\em SDSS} $ugriz$ magnitudes are saturated. The combination of these densities with those evaluated at larger distances using {\em SDSS} $ugriz$ photometry will supply accurate Galactic model parameters, particularly the local space densities for each population.

Separation of dwarf and giant stars with ROTSE-IIId

136 stars which were known to be the members of open cluster NGC 752 were observed at R band with ROTSE-IIId telescope located at the Turkish National Observatory (TUG) site. The data had been evaluated together with BV and 2MASS photometric data. A new practical method for separating dwarf and giant was described and applied. Evaluating the colour magnitude--diagrams with Padova isochrones revealed metallicity similar to the Sun and an age of 1.41 Gyr for the open cluster NGC 752.

Analysis of UBV Photometry in Selected Area 133

We interpret the de-reddened UBV data for the field SA 133 to deduce the stellar density and metallicity distributions function. The logarithmic local space density for giants, $D^{*}(0)=6.40$, and the agreement of the luminosity function for dwarfs and sub-giants with the one of Hipparcos confirms the empirical method used for their separation. The metallicity distribution for dwarfs gives a narrow peak at [Fe/H]=+0.13 dex, due to apparently bright limiting magnitude, $V_{o}=16.5$, whereas late-type giants extending up to $z \sim4.5$ kpc from the galactic plane have a multimodal distribution. The metallicity distribution for giants gives a steep gradient $d[Fe/H]/dz=-0.75$ dex kpc$^{-1}$ for thin disk and thick disk whereas a smaller value for the halo, i.e. $d[Fe/H]/dz=-0.45$ dex kpc$^{-1}$.
