Full Laplace spectrum of distance spheres in symmetric spaces of rank one

We use Lie-theoretic methods to explicitly compute the full spectrum of the Laplace--Beltrami operator on homogeneous spheres which occur as geodesic distance spheres in (compact or noncompact) symmetric spaces of rank one, and provide a single unified formula for all cases. As an application, we find all resonant radii for distance spheres in the compact case, i.e., radii where there is bifurcation of embedded constant mean curvature spheres, and show that distance spheres are stable and locally rigid in the noncompact case.

Global bifurcation for a class of nonlinear ODEs

We briefly survey global bifurcation techniques, and illustrate their use by finding multiple positive periodic solutions to a class of second order quasilinear ODEs related to the Yamabe problem. As an application, we give a bifurcation-theoretic proof of a classical nonuniqueness result for conformal metrics with constant scalar curvature, that was independently discovered by O. Kobayashi and R. Schoen in the 1980s.

Sectional curvature and Weitzenböck formulae

We establish a new algebraic characterization of sectional curvature bounds $\sec\geq k$ and $\sec\leq k$ using only curvature terms in the Weitzenböck formulae for symmetric $p$-tensors. By introducing a symmetric analogue of the Kulkarni-Nomizu product, we provide a simple formula for such curvature terms. We also give an application of the Bochner technique to closed $4$-manifolds with indefinite intersection form and $\sec>0$ or $\sec\geq0$, obtaining new insights into the Hopf Conjecture, without any symmetry assumptions.

Delaunay-type hypersurfaces in cohomogeneity one manifolds

Classical Delaunay surfaces are highly symmetric constant mean curvature (CMC) submanifolds of space forms. We prove the existence of Delaunay-type hypersurfaces in a large class of compact manifolds, using the geometry of cohomogeneity one group actions and variational bifurcation techniques. Our construction specializes to the classical examples in round spheres, and allows to obtain Delaunay-type hypersurfaces in many other ambient spaces, ranging from complex and quaternionic projective spaces to Kervaire exotic spheres.

Flag manifolds with strongly positive curvature

We obtain a complete description of the moduli spaces of homogeneous metrics with strongly positive curvature on the Wallach flag manifolds $W^6$, $W^{12}$ and $W^{24}$, which are respectively the manifolds of complete flags in $\mathbb C^3$, $\mathbb H^3$ and $\mathbb{Ca}^3$. Together with our earlier work, this concludes the classification of simply-connected homogeneous spaces that admit a homogeneous metric with strongly positive curvature.

Deforming solutions of geometric variational problems with varying symmetry groups

We prove an equivariant implicit function theorem for variational problems that are invariant under a varying symmetry group (corresponding to a bundle of Lie groups). Motivated by applications to families of geometric variational problems lacking regularity, several non-smooth extensions of the result are discussed. Among such applications is the submanifold problem of deforming the ambient metric preserving a given variational property of a prescribed family of submanifolds, e.g., constant mean curvature, up to the action of the corresponding ambient isometry groups.

Equivariant bifurcation in geometric variational problems

We prove an extension of a celebrated equivariant bifurcation result of J. Smoller and A. Wasserman, in an abstract framework for geometric variational problems. With this purpose, we prove a slice theorem for continuous affine actions of a (finite-dimensional) Lie group on Banach manifolds. As an application, we discuss equivariant bifurcation of constant mean curvature hypersurfaces, providing a few concrete examples and counter-examples.

Equivariant deformations of Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian submanifolds

We prove an equivariant deformation result for Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian submanifolds of a Kahler manifold, with respect to deformations of its metric and almost complex structure that are compatible with an isometric Hamiltonian group action. This yields existence of Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian submanifolds in possibly non-Kahler symplectic manifolds whose metric is arbitrarily close to a Kahler metric.

Multiplicity of solutions to the Yamabe problem on collapsing Riemannian submersions

Let g_t be a family of constant scalar curvature metrics on the total space of a Riemannian submersion obtained by shrinking the fibers of an original metric g, so that the submersion collapses as t approaches 0 (i.e., the total space converges to the base in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense). We prove that, under certain conditions, there are at least 3 unit volume constant scalar curvature metrics in the conformal class [g_t] for infinitely many t's accumulating at 0. This holds, e.g., for homogeneous metrics g_t obtained via Cheeger deformation of homogeneous fibrations with fibers of positive scalar curvature.

On the equivariant implicit function theorem with low regularity and applications to geometric variational problems

We prove an implicit function theorem for functions on infinite-dimensional Banach manifolds, invariant under the (local) action of a finite dimensional Lie group. Motivated by some geometric variational problems, we consider group actions that are not necessarily differentiable everywhere, but only on some dense subset. Applications are discussed in the context of harmonic maps, closed (pseudo-)Riemannian geodesics, and constant mean curvature hypersurfaces.

Positive biorthogonal curvature on S^2 x S^2

We prove that S^2 x S^2 satisfies an intermediate condition between having metrics with positive Ricci and positive sectional curvature. Namely, there exist metrics for which the average of the sectional curvatures of any two planes tangent at the same point, but separated by a minimum distance in the 2-Grassmannian, is strictly positive; and this can be done with an arbitrarily small lower bound on the distance between the planes considered. Although they have positive Ricci curvature, these metrics do not have nonnegative sectional curvature. Such metrics also have positive biorthogonal curvature, meaning that the average of sectional curvatures of any two orthogonal planes is positive.

Bifurcation and local rigidity of homogeneous solutions to the Yamabe problem on spheres

We study existence and non-existence of constant scalar curvature metrics conformal and arbitrarily close to homogeneous metrics on spheres, using variational techniques. This describes all critical points of the Hilbert-Einstein functional on such conformal classes, near homogeneous metrics. Both bifurcation and local rigidity type phenomena are obtained for 1-parameter families of U(n+1), Sp(n+1) and Spin(9)-homogeneous metrics.

Generic properties of semi-Riemannian geodesic flows

Let M be a possibly non compact smooth manifold. We study genericity in the C^k-topology (3<=k<=+infty) of nondegeneracy properties of semi-Riemannian geodesic flows on M. Namely, we prove a new version of the Bumpy Metric Theorem for a such M and also genericity of metrics that do not possess any degenerate geodesics satisfying suitable endpoints conditions. This extends results in the literature for geodesics with fixed endpoints to the case where endpoints lie on a compact submanifold P of MxM that satisfies an admissibility condition. Immediate consequences are generic non conjugacy between two points and non focality between a point and a submanifold (or also between two submanifolds).

Introduction to Lie groups, isometric and adjoint actions and some generalizations

The main purpose of these lecture notes is to provide a concise introduction to Lie groups, Lie algebras, and isometric and adjoint actions, aiming mostly at advanced undergraduate and graduate students. In addition, the connection between such classic theories and the research area of the first author is explored. Namely, generalizations to isoparametric submanifolds, polar actions and singular Riemannian foliations with sections (s.r.f.s.) are mentioned. The first chapters cover basic concepts, giving results on adjoint representation, closed subgroups, bi-invariant metrics, Killing forms and splitting in simple ideals. In the following chapters, proper and isometric actions are recalled together with adjoint action and foliations, mostly concerning the Weyl group, normal slices and Dynkin diagrams. A special focus is given to maximal tori and roots of compact Lie groups, exploring its connection with isoparametric submanifolds and polar actions. Furthermore, in the last chapter, a survey on recent research results on s.r.f.s. is given. In this revised version, more details about fiber bundles, proper and isometric actions are explored, and further exercises and examples were added. It also features new sections with examples of singular Riemannian foliations constructed with surgery and suspension of homomorphisms. This is still a preliminary version and we expect to improve it in the future. We would be grateful for any kind of suggestions.

Genericity of nondegenerate geodesics with general boundary conditions

Let M be a possibly noncompact manifold. We prove, generically in the C^k-topology (k=2,...,\infty), that semi-Riemannian metrics of a given index on M do not possess any degenerate geodesics satisfying suitable boundary conditions. This extends a result of Biliotti, Javaloyes and Piccione for geodesics with fixed endpoints to the case where endpoints lie on a compact submanifold P of the product MxM that satisfies an admissibility condition. Such condition holds, for example, when P is transversal to the diagonal of MxM. Further aspects of these boundary conditions are discussed and general conditions under which metrics without degenerate geodesics are C^k-generic are given.
