Full Laplace spectrum of distance spheres in symmetric spaces of rank one

We use Lie-theoretic methods to explicitly compute the full spectrum of the Laplace--Beltrami operator on homogeneous spheres which occur as geodesic distance spheres in (compact or noncompact) symmetric spaces of rank one, and provide a single unified formula for all cases. As an application, we find all resonant radii for distance spheres in the compact case, i.e., radii where there is bifurcation of embedded constant mean curvature spheres, and show that distance spheres are stable and locally rigid in the noncompact case.

The stability of standard homogeneous Einstein manifolds

Back in 1985, Wang and Ziller obtained a complete classification of all homogeneous spaces of compact simple Lie groups on which the standard or Killing metric is Einstein. The list consists, beyond isotropy irreducible spaces, of 12 infinite families (two of them are actually conceptual constructions) and 22 isolated examples. We study in this paper the nature of each of these Einstein metrics as a critical point of the scalar curvature functional.

Strong multiplicity one theorems for locally homogeneous spaces of compact type

Let $G$ be a compact connected semisimple Lie group, let $K$ be a closed subgroup of $G$, let $Γ$ be a finite subgroup of $G$, and let $τ$ be a finite-dimensional representation of $K$. For $π$ in the unitary dual $\widehat G$ of $G$, denote by $n_Γ(π)$ its multiplicity in $L^2(Γ\backslash G)$. We prove a strong multiplicity one theorem in the spirit of Bhagwat and Rajan, for the $n_Γ(π)$ for $π$ in the set $\widehat G_τ$ of irreducible $τ$-spherical representations of $G$. More precisely, for $Γ$ and $Γ'$ finite subgroups of $G$, we prove that if $n_Γ(π)= n_{Γ'}(π)$ for all but finitely many $π\in \widehat G_τ$, then $Γ$ and $Γ'$ are $τ$-representation equivalent, that is, $n_Γ(π)=n_{Γ'}(π)$ for all $π\in \widehat G_τ$. Moreover, when $\widehat G_τ$ can be written as a finite union of strings of representations, we prove a finite version of the above result. For any finite subset $\widehat {F}_τ$ of $\widehat G_τ$ verifying some mild conditions, the values of the $n_Γ(π)$ for $π\in\widehat F_τ$ determine the $n_Γ(π)$'s for all $π\in \widehat G_τ$. In particular, for two finite subgroups $Γ$ and $Γ'$ of $G$, if $n_Γ(π) = n_{Γ'}(π)$ for all $π\in \widehat F_τ$ then the equality holds for every $π\in \widehat G_τ$. We use algebraic methods involving generating functions and some facts from the representation theory of $G$.

Non-solvable Lie groups with negative Ricci curvature

Until a couple of years ago, the only known examples of Lie groups admitting left-invariant metrics with negative Ricci curvature were either solvable or semisimple. We use a general construction from a previous article of the second named author to produce a great amount of examples with compact Levy factor. Given a compact semisimple real Lie algebra $\mathfrak u$ and a real representation $π$ satisfying some technical properties, the construction returns a metric Lie algebra $\mathfrak l(\mathfrak u,π)$ with negative Ricci operator. In this paper, when $\mathfrak u$ is assumed to be simple, we prove that $\mathfrak l(\mathfrak u,π)$ admits a metric having negative Ricci curvature for all but finitely many finite-dimensional irreducible representations of $\mathfrak u\otimes_{\mathbb R} \mathbb C$, regarded as a real representation of $\mathfrak u$. We also prove in the last section a more general result where the nilradical is not abelian, as it is in every $\mathfrak l(\mathfrak u,π)$.

On the smallest Laplace eigenvalue for naturally reductive metrics on compact simple Lie groups

Eldredge, Gordina and Saloff-Coste recently conjectured that, for a given compact connected Lie group $G$, there is a positive real number $C$ such that $λ_1(G,g)\operatorname{diam}(G,g)^2\leq C$ for all left-invariant metrics $g$ on $G$. In this short note, we establish the conjecture for the small subclass of naturally reductive left-invariant metrics on a compact simple Lie group.

On the SO(n+3) to SO(n) branching multiplicity space

We study the decomposition as an $\textrm{SO}(3)$-module of the multiplicity space corresponding to the branching from $\textrm{SO}(n+3)$ to $\textrm{SO}(n)$. Here, $\textrm{SO}(n)$ (resp.\ $\textrm{SO}(3)$) is considered embedded in $\textrm{SO}(n+3)$ in the upper left-hand block (resp.\ lower right-hand block). We show that when the highest weight of the irreducible representation of $\textrm{SO}(n)$ interlaces the highest weight of the irreducible representation of $\textrm{SO}(n+3)$, then the multiplicity space decomposes as a tensor product of $\lfloor (n+2)/2\rfloor$ reducible representations of $\textrm{SO}(3)$.

Spectral uniqueness of bi-invariant metrics on symplectic groups

In this short note, we prove that a bi-invariant Riemannian metric on $\mathrm{Sp}(n)$ is uniquely determined by the spectrum of its Laplace-Beltrami operator within the class of left-invariant metrics on $\mathrm{Sp}(n)$. In other words, on any of these compact simple Lie groups, every left-invariant metric which is not right-invariant cannot be isospectral to a bi-invariant metric. The proof is elementary and uses a very strong spectral obstruction proved by Gordon, Schueth, and Sutton.

Spectra of orbifolds with cyclic fundamental groups

We give a simple geometric characterization of isospectral orbifolds covered by spheres, complex projective spaces and the quaternion projective line having cyclic fundamental group. The differential operators considered are Laplace-Beltrami operators twisted by characters of the corresponding fundamental group. To prove the characterization, we first give an explicit description of their spectra by using generating functions. We also include many isospectral examples.

Non-strongly isospectral spherical space forms

In this paper we describe recent results on explicit construction of lens spaces that are not strongly isospectral, yet they are isospectral on $p$-forms for every $p$. Such examples cannot be obtained by the Sunada method. We also discuss related results, emphasizing on significant classical work of Ikeda on isospectral lens spaces, via a thorough study of the associated generating functions.

Spectra of lens spaces from 1-norm spectra of congruence lattices

To every $n$-dimensional lens space $L$, we associate a congruence lattice $\mathcal L$ in $\mathbb Z^m$, with $n=2m-1$ and we prove a formula relating the multiplicities of Hodge-Laplace eigenvalues on $L$ with the number of lattice elements of a given $\|\cdot\|_1$-length in $\mathcal L$. As a consequence, we show that two lens spaces are isospectral on functions (resp.\ isospectral on $p$-forms for every $p$) if and only if the associated congruence lattices are $\|\cdot\|_1$-isospectral (resp.\ $\|\cdot\|_1$-isospectral plus a geometric condition). Using this fact, we give, for every dimension $n\ge 5$, infinitely many examples of Riemannian manifolds that are isospectral on every level $p$ and are not strongly isospectral.

A generalized Hermite constant and its computations for imaginary quadratic fields

We introduce the projective Hermite constant for positive definite binary hermitian forms associated with an imaginary quadratic number field $K$. It is a lower bound for the classical Hermite constant, and these two constants coincide when $K$ has class number one. Using the geometric tools developed by Mendoza and Vogtmann for their study of the homology of the Bianchi groups, we compute the projective Hermite constants for those $K$ whose absolute discriminants are less than 70, and determine the hermitian forms that attain the projective Hermite constants in these cases. A comparison of the projective hermitian constant with some other generalizations of the classical Hermite constant is also given.

Representation equivalent Bieberbach groups and strongly isospectral flat manifolds

Let $Γ_1$ and $Γ_2$ be Bieberbach groups contained in the full isometry group $G$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$. We prove that if the compact flat manifolds $Γ_1\backslash\mathbb{R}^n$ and $Γ_2\backslash\mathbb{R}^n$ are strongly isospectral then the Bieberbach groups $Γ_1$ and $Γ_2$ are representation equivalent, that is, the right regular representations $L^2(Γ_1\backslash G)$ and $L^2(Γ_2\backslash G)$ are unitarily equivalent.

An asymptotic formula for representations of integers by indefinite hermitian forms

We fix a maximal order $\mathcal O$ in $\F=\R,\C$ or $\mathbb{H}$, and an $\F$-hermitian form $Q$ of signature $(n,1)$ with coefficients in $\mathcal O$. Let $k\in\N$. By applying a lattice point theorem on the $\F$-hyperbolic space, we give an asymptotic formula with an error term, as $t\to+\infty$, for the number $N_t(Q,-k)$ of integral solutions $x\in\mathcal O^{n+1}$ of the equation $Q[x]=-k$ satisfying $|x_{n+1}|\leq t$.

Strongly isospectral manifolds with nonisomorphic cohomology rings

For any $n\geq 7$, $k\geq 3$, we give pairs of compact flat $n$-manifolds $M, M'$ with holonomy groups $\mathbb Z_2^k$, that are strongly isospectral, hence isospectral on $p$-forms for all values of $p$, having nonisomorphic cohomology rings. Moreover, if $n$ is even, $M$ is Kähler while $M'$ is not. Furthermore, with the help of a computer program we show the existence of large Sunada isospectral families; for instance, for $n=24$ and $k=3$ there is a family of eight compact flat manifolds (four of them Kähler) having very different cohomology rings. In particular, the cardinalities of the sets of primitive forms are different for all manifolds.
