Full Laplace spectrum of distance spheres in symmetric spaces of rank one

We use Lie-theoretic methods to explicitly compute the full spectrum of the Laplace--Beltrami operator on homogeneous spheres which occur as geodesic distance spheres in (compact or noncompact) symmetric spaces of rank one, and provide a single unified formula for all cases. As an application, we find all resonant radii for distance spheres in the compact case, i.e., radii where there is bifurcation of embedded constant mean curvature spheres, and show that distance spheres are stable and locally rigid in the noncompact case.

Global bifurcation for a class of nonlinear ODEs

We briefly survey global bifurcation techniques, and illustrate their use by finding multiple positive periodic solutions to a class of second order quasilinear ODEs related to the Yamabe problem. As an application, we give a bifurcation-theoretic proof of a classical nonuniqueness result for conformal metrics with constant scalar curvature, that was independently discovered by O. Kobayashi and R. Schoen in the 1980s.

Van der Waals--Allen--Cahn--Hilliard equation with a volume constraint

We give multiplicity results for the solutions of a nonlinear elliptic equation, with an asymmetric double well potential of Van der Waals-Allen--Cahn--Hilliard type, satisfying a linear volume constraint, on a bounded Lipschitz domain $Ω\subset\mathds R^N$. The number of solutions is estimated in terms of topological and homological invariants of the underlying domain $Ω$.

Delaunay-type hypersurfaces in cohomogeneity one manifolds

Classical Delaunay surfaces are highly symmetric constant mean curvature (CMC) submanifolds of space forms. We prove the existence of Delaunay-type hypersurfaces in a large class of compact manifolds, using the geometry of cohomogeneity one group actions and variational bifurcation techniques. Our construction specializes to the classical examples in round spheres, and allows to obtain Delaunay-type hypersurfaces in many other ambient spaces, ranging from complex and quaternionic projective spaces to Kervaire exotic spheres.

On a monodromy theorem for sheaves of local fields and applications

We prove a monodromy theorem for local vector fields belonging to a sheaf satisfying the unique continuation property. In particular, in the case of admissible regular sheaves of local fields defined on a simply connected manifold, we obtain a global extension result for every local field of the sheaf. This generalizes previous works of Nomizu for semi-Riemannian Killing fields, of Ledger--Obata for conformal fields, and of Amores for fields preserving a $G$-structure of finite type. The result applies to Finsler or pseudo-Finsler Killing fields and, more generally, to affine fields of a spray. Some applications are discussed.

Deforming solutions of geometric variational problems with varying symmetry groups

We prove an equivariant implicit function theorem for variational problems that are invariant under a varying symmetry group (corresponding to a bundle of Lie groups). Motivated by applications to families of geometric variational problems lacking regularity, several non-smooth extensions of the result are discussed. Among such applications is the submanifold problem of deforming the ambient metric preserving a given variational property of a prescribed family of submanifolds, e.g., constant mean curvature, up to the action of the corresponding ambient isometry groups.

On bifurcation and local rigidity of triply periodic minimal surfaces in $\mathbb R^3$

We use bifurcation theory to determine the existence of infinitely many new examples of triply periodic minimal surfaces in $\mathbb R^3$. These new examples form branches issuing from the H-family, the rPD-family, the tP-family, and the tD-family, that converge to some degenerate embedding of the families. As to nondegenerate triply periodic minimal surfaces, we prove a perturbation result using an equivariant implicit function theorem.

Almost isometries of non-reversible metrics with applications to stationary spacetimes

We develop the basics of a theory of almost isometries for spaces endowed with a quasi-metric. The case of non-reversible Finsler (more specifically, Randers) metrics is of particular interest, and it is studied in more detail. The main motivation arises from General Relativity, and more specifically in spacetimes endowed with a timelike conformal field K, in which case \emph{conformal diffeomorphisms} correspond to almost isometries of the Fermat metrics defined in the spatial part. A series of results on the topology and the Lie group structure of conformal maps are discussed.

Equivariant bifurcation in geometric variational problems

We prove an extension of a celebrated equivariant bifurcation result of J. Smoller and A. Wasserman, in an abstract framework for geometric variational problems. With this purpose, we prove a slice theorem for continuous affine actions of a (finite-dimensional) Lie group on Banach manifolds. As an application, we discuss equivariant bifurcation of constant mean curvature hypersurfaces, providing a few concrete examples and counter-examples.

Equivariant deformations of Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian submanifolds

We prove an equivariant deformation result for Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian submanifolds of a Kahler manifold, with respect to deformations of its metric and almost complex structure that are compatible with an isometric Hamiltonian group action. This yields existence of Hamiltonian stationary Lagrangian submanifolds in possibly non-Kahler symplectic manifolds whose metric is arbitrarily close to a Kahler metric.

Multiplicity of solutions to the Yamabe problem on collapsing Riemannian submersions

Let g_t be a family of constant scalar curvature metrics on the total space of a Riemannian submersion obtained by shrinking the fibers of an original metric g, so that the submersion collapses as t approaches 0 (i.e., the total space converges to the base in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense). We prove that, under certain conditions, there are at least 3 unit volume constant scalar curvature metrics in the conformal class [g_t] for infinitely many t's accumulating at 0. This holds, e.g., for homogeneous metrics g_t obtained via Cheeger deformation of homogeneous fibrations with fibers of positive scalar curvature.

On the equivariant implicit function theorem with low regularity and applications to geometric variational problems

We prove an implicit function theorem for functions on infinite-dimensional Banach manifolds, invariant under the (local) action of a finite dimensional Lie group. Motivated by some geometric variational problems, we consider group actions that are not necessarily differentiable everywhere, but only on some dense subset. Applications are discussed in the context of harmonic maps, closed (pseudo-)Riemannian geodesics, and constant mean curvature hypersurfaces.

Bifurcation and local rigidity of homogeneous solutions to the Yamabe problem on spheres

We study existence and non-existence of constant scalar curvature metrics conformal and arbitrarily close to homogeneous metrics on spheres, using variational techniques. This describes all critical points of the Hilbert-Einstein functional on such conformal classes, near homogeneous metrics. Both bifurcation and local rigidity type phenomena are obtained for 1-parameter families of U(n+1), Sp(n+1) and Spin(9)-homogeneous metrics.

On Fermat's principle for causal curves in time oriented Finsler spacetimes

In this work, a version of Fermat's principle for causal curves with the same energy in time orientable Finsler spacetimes is proved. We calculate the secondvariation of the {\it time arrival functional} along a geodesic in terms of the index form associated with the Finsler spacetime Lagrangian. Then the character of the critical points of the time arrival functional is investigated and a Morse index theorem in the context of Finsler spacetime is presented.

Maslov index in semi-Riemannian submersions

We study focal points and Maslov index of a horizontal geodesic $γ:I\to M$ in the total space of a semi-Riemannian submersion $π:M\to B$ by determining an explicit relation with the corresponding objects along the projected geodesic $π\circγ:I\to B$ in the base space. We use this result to calculate the focal Maslov index of a (spacelike) geodesic in a stationary space-time which is orthogonal to a timelike Killing vector field.

Riemannian submersions with discrete spectrum

We prove some estimates on the spectrum of the Laplacian of the total space of a Riemannian submersion in terms of the spectrum of the Laplacian of the base and the geometry of the fibers. When the fibers of the submersions are compact and minimal, we prove that the total space is discrete if and only if the base is discrete. When the fibers are not minimal, we prove a discreteness criterion for the total space in terms of the relative growth of the mean curvature of the fibers and the mean curvature of the geodesic spheres in the base. We discuss in particular the case of warped products.

On the semi-Riemannian bumpy metric theorem

We prove the semi-Riemannian bumpy metric theorem using equivariant variational genericity. The theorem states that, on a given compact manifold $M$, the set of semi-Riemannian metrics that admit only nondegenerate closed geodesics is generic relatively to the $C^k$-topology, $k=2,...,\infty$, in the set of metrics of a given index on $M$. A higher order genericity Riemannian result of Klingenberg and Takens is extended to semi-Riemannian geometry.
