A group theoretic proof of a compactness lemma and existence of nonradial solutions for semilinear elliptic equations

Symmetry plays a basic role in variational problems (settled e.g. in $\mathbb R^{n}$ or in a more general manifold), for example to deal with the lack of compactness which naturally appear when the problem is invariant under the action of a noncompact group. In $\mathbb R^n$, a compactness result for invariant functions with respect to a subgroup $G$ of $\mathrm{O}(n)$ has been proved under the condition that the $G$ action on $\mathbb R^n$ is compatible, see \cite{willem}. As a first result we generalize this and show here that the compactness is recovered for particular subgroups of the isometry group of a Riemannian manifold. We investigate also isometric action on Hadamard manifold $(M,g)$ proving that a large class of subgroups of $\mathrm{Iso}(M,g)$ is compatible. As an application we get a compactness result for ``invariant'' functions which allows us to prove the existence of nonradial solutions for a classical scalar equation and for a nonlocal fractional equation on $\mathbb R^n$ for $n=3$ and $n=5$, improving some results known in the literature. Finally, we prove the existence of nonradial invariant functions such that a compactness result holds for some symmetric spaces of non compact type.

On the structure of the Nehari set associated to a Schrödinger-Poisson system with prescribed mass: old and new results

In this paper we apply the fibering method of Pohozaev to a Schrödinger-Poisson system, with prescribed $L^{2}$ norm of the unknown, in the whole $\mathbb R^{3}$. The method makes clear the role played by the exponents $p=3, p=8/3, p=10/3$. Beside to show as old results can be obtained in a unified way, we exhibit also new ones.

Positive solutions for a class of nonlocal problems with possibly singular nonlinearity

We study a class of elliptic problems with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition and a nonlinear reaction term $f$ which is nonlocal depending on the $L^{p}$-norm of the unknown function. The nonlinearity $f$ can make the problem degenerate since it may even have multiple singularities in the nonlocal variable. We use fixed point arguments for an appropriately defined solution map to produce multiplicity of classical positive solutions with ordered norms.

Ground state solutions for fractional scalar field equations under a general critical nonlinearity

In this paper we study existence of ground state solution to the following problem $$ (- Δ)^αu = g(u) \ \ \mbox{in} \ \ \mathbb{R}^{N}, \ \ u \in H^α(\mathbb R^N) $$ where $(-Δ)^α$ is the fractional Laplacian, $α\in (0,1)$. We treat both cases $N\geq2$ and $N=1$ with $α=1/2$. The function $g$ is a general nonlinearity of Berestycki-Lions type which is allowed to have critical growth: polynomial in case $N\geq2$, exponential if $N=1$.

Positive semiclassical states for a fractional Schrödinger-Poisson system

We consider a fractional Schrödinger-Poisson system in the whole space $\mathbb R^{N}$ in presence of a positive potential and depending on a small positive parameter $\varepsilon.$ We show that, for suitably small $\varepsilon$ (i.e. in the "semiclassical limit") the number of positive solutions is estimated below by the Ljusternick-Schnirelmann category of the set of minima of the potential.

A multiplicity result via Ljusternick-Schnirelmann category and morse theory for a fractional schrödinger equation in $\mathbb R^{N}$

In this work we study the following class of problems in $\mathbb R^{N}, N>2s$ $$ \varepsilon^{2s} (-Δ)^{s}u + V(z)u=f(u), \,\,\, u(z) > 0 $$ where $0<s<1$, $(-Δ)^{s}$ is the fractional Laplacian, $\varepsilon$ is a positive parameter, the potential $V:\mathbb{R}^N \to\mathbb{R}$ %is a continuous functions and the nonlinearity $f:\mathbb R \to \mathbb R$ satisfy suitable assumptions; in particular it is assumed that $V$ achieves its positive minimum on some set $M.$ By using variational methods we prove existence, multiplicity and concentration of maxima of positive solutions when $\varepsilon\to 0^{+}$. In particular the multiplicity result is obtained by means of the Ljusternick-Schnirelmann and Morse theory, by exploiting the "topological complexity" of the set $M$.

A multiplicity result for Chern-Simons-Schrödinger equation with a general nonlinearity

In this paper we give a multiplicity result for the following Chern-Simons-Schrödinger equation \[ -Δu+2q u \int_{|x|}^{\infty}\frac{u^{2}(s)}{s}h_u(s)ds +q u\frac{h^{2}_u(|x|)}{|x|^{2}} = g(u), \quad\hbox{in }\mathbb{R}^2, \] where $\displaystyle h_u(s)=\int_0^s τu^2(τ) \ d τ$, under very general assumptions on the nonlinearity $g$. In particular, for every $n\in \mathbb N$, we prove the existence of (at least) $n$ distinct solutions, for every $q\in (0,q_{n})$, for a suitable $q_n$.

Deforming solutions of geometric variational problems with varying symmetry groups

We prove an equivariant implicit function theorem for variational problems that are invariant under a varying symmetry group (corresponding to a bundle of Lie groups). Motivated by applications to families of geometric variational problems lacking regularity, several non-smooth extensions of the result are discussed. Among such applications is the submanifold problem of deforming the ambient metric preserving a given variational property of a prescribed family of submanifolds, e.g., constant mean curvature, up to the action of the corresponding ambient isometry groups.

Equivariant bifurcation in geometric variational problems

We prove an extension of a celebrated equivariant bifurcation result of J. Smoller and A. Wasserman, in an abstract framework for geometric variational problems. With this purpose, we prove a slice theorem for continuous affine actions of a (finite-dimensional) Lie group on Banach manifolds. As an application, we discuss equivariant bifurcation of constant mean curvature hypersurfaces, providing a few concrete examples and counter-examples.

On the equivariant implicit function theorem with low regularity and applications to geometric variational problems

We prove an implicit function theorem for functions on infinite-dimensional Banach manifolds, invariant under the (local) action of a finite dimensional Lie group. Motivated by some geometric variational problems, we consider group actions that are not necessarily differentiable everywhere, but only on some dense subset. Applications are discussed in the context of harmonic maps, closed (pseudo-)Riemannian geodesics, and constant mean curvature hypersurfaces.

On translation invariant constrained minimization problems with application to Schrödinger-Poisson equation

In this paper we study the existence of minimizers for a class of constrained minimization problems that are invariant under translations. We call $$I_{ρ^{2}}:=\inf_{B_ρ}I(u) \ $$ where $B_ρ=\{u\in H^{m}(\R^{N}):\|u\|_{2}=ρ\},$ and $I(u)=1/2\|u\|^{2}_{D^{m,2}}+T(u)$, $T$ fulfilling general assumptions. We show that the regularity of the function $$(0,\infty)\ni s \mapsto I_{s^2}\,$$ and the behaviour of $\frac{I_{s^2}}{s^2}$ in the neighborhood of zero allows to prove the strong subadditivity inequality. As byproduct the strong convergence of the minimizing sequences (up to translations) is proved. We give an application to the energy functional $I$ associated to the Schrödinger-Poisson equation in $\R^{3}$ orbitally stable standing waves with arbitray charge for the following Schrödinger-Poisson type equation \label{SP} iψ_{t}+ Δψ- (|x|^{-1}*|ψ|^{2}) ψ+|ψ|^{p-2}ψ=0 \text{in} \R^{3}, \text{with} \ 2<p<3. When $2<p<3$, In particular we prove that $I$ achieves its minimum on the constraint $\{u\in H^{1}(\R^{3}): \|u\|_{2}=ρ\}$ for every $ρ>0$ and, as a consequence, the set of minimizers is orbitally stable. This covers the physically relevant case, $p=8/3$, the so called Schrödinger-Poisson-Slater system.

Stable standing waves for a class of nonlinear Schroedinger-Poisson equations

We prove the existence of orbitally stable standing waves with prescribed $L^2$-norm for the following Schrödinger-Poisson type equation \label{intro} %{%{ll} iψ_{t}+ Δψ- (|x|^{-1}*|ψ|^{2}) ψ+|ψ|^{p-2}ψ=0 \text{in} \R^{3}, %-Δϕ= |ψ|^{2}& \text{in} \R^{3},%. when $p\in \{8/3\}\cup (3,10/3)$. In the case $3<p<10/3$ we prove the existence and stability only for sufficiently large $L^2$-norm. In case $p=8/3$ our approach recovers the result of Sanchez and Soler \cite{SS} %concerning the existence and stability for sufficiently small charges. The main point is the analysis of the compactness of minimizing sequences for the related constrained minimization problem. In a final section a further application to the Schrödinger equation involving the biharmonic operator is given.

Existence of ground states for a modified nonlinear Schrodinger equation

In this paper we prove existence of ground state solutions of the modified nonlinear Schrodinger equation: $$ -Δu+V(x)u-{1/2}u Δu^{2}=|u|^{p-1}u, x \in \R^N, N \geq 3, $$ under some hypotheses on $V(x)$. This model has been proposed in the theory of superfluid films in plasma physics. As a main novelty with respect to some previous results, we are able to deal with exponents $p\in(1,3)$. The proof is accomplished by minimization under a convenient constraint.
