End-to-end Sinkhorn Autoencoder with Noise Generator

In this work, we propose a novel end-to-end sinkhorn autoencoder with noise generator for efficient data collection simulation. Simulating processes that aim at collecting experimental data is crucial for multiple real-life applications, including nuclear medicine, astronomy and high energy physics. Contemporary methods, such as Monte Carlo algorithms, provide high-fidelity results at a price of high computational cost. Multiple attempts are taken to reduce this burden, e.g. using generative approaches based on Generative Adversarial Networks or Variational Autoencoders. Although such methods are much faster, they are often unstable in training and do not allow sampling from an entire data distribution. To address these shortcomings, we introduce a novel method dubbed end-to-end Sinkhorn Autoencoder, that leverages sinkhorn algorithm to explicitly align distribution of encoded real data examples and generated noise. More precisely, we extend autoencoder architecture by adding a deterministic neural network trained to map noise from a known distribution onto autoencoder latent space representing data distribution. We optimise the entire model jointly. Our method outperforms competing approaches on a challenging dataset of simulation data from Zero Degree Calorimeters of ALICE experiment in LHC. as well as standard benchmarks, such as MNIST and CelebA.

Quasi-local Algebras and Asymptotic Expanders

In this paper, we study the relation between the uniform Roe algebra and the uniform quasi-local algebra associated to a metric space of bounded geometry. In the process, we introduce a weakening of the notion of expanders, called asymptotic expanders. We show that being a sequence of asymptotic expanders is a coarse property under certain connectedness condition, and it implies non-uniformly local amenability. Moreover, we also analyse some $C^*$-algebraic properties of uniform quasi-local algebras. In particular, we show that a uniform quasi-local algebra is nuclear if and only if the underlying metric space has Property A.

A note on stochastic ordering of estimators of exponential reliability

Recently Balakrishnan and Iliopoulos [Ann. Inst. Statist. Math. 61 (2009)] gave sufficient conditions under which maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) is stochastically increasing. In this paper we study test plans which are not considered there and we prove that MLEs for those plans are also stochastic ordered. We also give some applications to the estimation of reliability.

Order preserving property of moment estimators

Balakrishnan and Mi [1] considered order preserving property of maximum likelihood estimators. In this paper there are given conditions under which the moment estimators have the property of preserving stochastic orders. There is considered property of preserving for usual stochastic order as well as for likelihood ratio order. Mainly, sufficient conditions are given for one parameter family of distributions and also for exponential family, location family and scale family.

A homological characterization of topological amenability

Generalizing Block and Weinberger's characterization of amenability we introduce the notion of uniformly finite homology for a group action on a compact space and use it to give a homological characterization of topological amenability for actions. By considering the case of the natural action of $G$ on its Stone-\vCech compactification we obtain a homological characterization of exactness of the group, answering a question of Nigel Higson.

Amenable actions, invariant means and bounded cohomology

We show that topological amenability of an action of a countable discrete group on a compact space is equivalent to the existence of an invariant mean for the action. We prove also that this is equivalent to vanishing of bounded cohomology for a class of Banach G-modules associated to the action, as well as to vanishing of a specific cohomology class. In the case when the compact space is a point our result reduces to a classic theorem of B.E. Johnson characterising amenability of groups. In the case when the compact space is the Stone-Čech compactification of the group we obtain a cohomological characterisation of exactness for the group, answering a question of Higson.

Controlled coarse homology and isoperimetric inequalities

We study a coarse homology theory with prescribed growth conditions. For a finitely generated group G with the word length metric this homology theory turns out to be related to amenability of G. We characterize vanishing of a certain fundamental class in our homology in terms of an isoperimetric inequality on G and show that on any group at most linear control is needed for this class to vanish. The latter is a homological version of the classical Burnside problem for infinite groups, with a positive solution. As applications we characterize existence of primitives of the volume form with prescribed growth and show that coarse homology classes obstruct weighted Poincare inequalities.
