Small ball probability estimates for the Hölder semi-norm of the stochastic heat equation

We consider the stochastic heat equation on $[0,\,1]$ with periodic boundary conditions and driven by space-time white noise. Under various natural conditions, we study small ball probabilities for the Hölder semi-norms of the solutions, and provide near optimal bounds on these probabilities. As an application, we prove a support theorem in these Hölder semi-norms.

The Osgood condition for stochastic partial differential equations

We study the following equation \begin{equation*} \frac{\partial u(t,\,x)}{\partial t}= Δu(t,\,x)+b(u(t,\,x))+σ\dot{W}(t,\,x),\quad t>0, \end{equation*} where $σ$ is a positive constant and $\dot{W}$ is a space-time white noise. The initial condition $u(0,x)=u_0(x)$ is assumed to be a nonnegative and continuous function. We first study the problem on $[0,\,1]$ with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. Under some suitable conditions, together with a theorem of Bonder and Groisman, our first result shows that the solution blows up in finite time if and only if \begin{equation*} \int_{\cdot}^\infty\frac{1}{b(s)}\,d s<\infty, \end{equation*} which is the well-known Osgood condition. We also consider the same equation on the whole line and show that the above condition is sufficient for the nonexistence of global solutions. Various other extensions are provided; we look at equations with fractional Laplacian and spatial colored noise in $\mathbb{R}^d$.

An approximation result for a class of stochastic heat equations with colored noise

We show that a large class of stochastic heat equations can be approximated by systems of interacting stochastic differential equations. As a consequence, we prove various comparison principles extending earlier results. Among other things, our results enable us to obtain sharp estimates on the moments of the solution. A main technical ingredient of our method is a local limit theorem which is of independent interest.

Non-linear noise excitation for some space-time fractional stochastic equations in bounded domains

In this paper we study non-linear noise excitation for the following class of space-time fractional stochastic equations in bounded domains: $$\partial^β_tu_t(x)=-ν(-Δ)^{α/2} u_t(x)+I^{1-β}_t[λσ(u)\stackrel{\cdot}{F}(t,x)]$$ in $(d+1)$ dimensions, where $ν>0, β\in (0,1)$, $α\in (0,2]$. The operator $\partial^β_t$ is the Caputo fractional derivative, $-(-Δ)^{α/2} $ is the generator of an isotropic stable process and $I^{1-β}_t$ is the fractional integral operator. The forcing noise denoted by $\stackrel{\cdot}{F}(t,x)$ is a Gaussian noise. The multiplicative non-linearity $σ:\RR{R}\to\RR{R}$ is assumed to be globally Lipschitz continuous. These equations were recently introduced by Mijena and Nane(J. Mijena and E. Nane. Space time fractional stochastic partial differential equations. Stochastic Process Appl. 125 (2015), no. 9, 3301--3326). We first study the existence and uniqueness of the solution of these equations {and} under suitable conditions on the initial function, we {also} study the asymptotic behavior of the solution with respect to the parameter $λ$. In particular, our results are significant extensions of those in Foondun et al (M. Foondun, K. Tian and W. Liu. On some properties of a class of fractional stochastic equations. Preprint available at arxiv.org 1404.6791v1.), Foondun and Khoshnevisan (M. Foondun and D. Khoshnevisan. Intermittence and nonlinear parabolic stochastic partial differential equations, Electron. J. Probab. 14 (2009), no. 21, 548--568.), Nane and Mijena (J. Mijena and E. Nane. Space time fractional stochastic partial differential equations. Stochastic Process Appl. 125 (2015), no. 9, 3301--3326; J. B. Mijena, and E.Nane. Intermittence and time fractional partial differential equations. Submitted. 2014).

Some non-existence results for a class of stochastic partial differential equations

Consider the following stochastic partial differential equation, \begin{equation*} \partial_t u_t(x)= \mathcal{L}u_t(x)+ σ(u_t(x))\dot F(t,x)\quad{t>0}\quad\text{and}\quad x\in R^d. \end{equation*} The operator $\mathcal{L}$ is the generator of a strictly stable process and $\dot F$ is the random forcing term which is assumed to be Gaussian. Under some additional conditions, most notably on $σ$ and the initial condition, we show non-existence of global random field solutions. Our results are new and complement earlier works.

Asymptotic properties of some space-time fractional stochastic equations

Consider non-linear time-fractional stochastic heat type equations of the following type, $$\partial^β_tu_t(x)=-ν(-Δ)^{α/2} u_t(x)+I^{1-β}_t[λσ(u)\stackrel{\cdot}{F}(t,x)]$$ in $(d+1)$ dimensions, where $ν>0, β\in (0,1)$, $α\in (0,2]$. The operator $\partial^β_t$ is the Caputo fractional derivative while $-(-Δ)^{α/2} $ is the generator of an isotropic stable process and $I^{1-β}_t$ is the fractional integral operator. The forcing noise denoted by $\stackrel{\cdot}{F}(t,x)$ is a Gaussian noise. And the multiplicative non-linearity $σ$ is assumed to be globally Lipschitz continuous. Under suitable conditions on the initial function, we study the asymptotic behaviour of the solution with respect to time and the parameter $λ$. In particular, our results are significant extensions of existing results. Along the way, we prove a number of interesting properties about the deterministic counterpart of the equation.

Analysis of the gradient of the solution to a stochastic heat equation via fractional Brownian motion

Consider the stochastic partial differential equation $\partial_t u = Lu+σ(u)ξ$, where $ξ$ denotes space-time white noise and $L:=-(-Δ)^{α/2}$ denotes the fractional Laplace operator of index $α/2\in(\nicefrac12\,,1]$. We study the detailed behavior of the approximate spatial gradient $u_t(x)-u_t(x-\varepsilon)$ at fixed times $t>0$, as $\varepsilon\downarrow0$. We discuss a few applications of this work to the study of the sample functions of the solution to the KPZ equation as well.

Mean Square Polynomial Stability of Numerical Solutions to a Class of Stochastic Differential Equations

The exponential stability of numerical methods to stochastic differential equations (SDEs) has been widely studied. In contrast, there are relatively few works on polynomial stability of numerical methods. In this letter, we address the question of reproducing the polynomial decay of a class of SDEs using the Euler--Maruyama method and the backward Euler--Maruyama method. The key technical contribution is based on various estimates involving the gamma function.

Moment bounds for a class of fractional stochastic heat equations

We consider fractional stochastic heat equations of the form $\frac{\partial u_t(x)}{\partial t} = -(-Δ)^{α/2} u_t(x)+λσ(u_t(x)) \dot F(t,\, x)$. Here $\dot F$ denotes the noise term. Under suitable assumptions, we show that the second moment of the solution grows exponentially with time. In particular, this answers an open problem in \cite{CoKh}. Along the way, we prove a number of other interesting properties which extend and complement results in \cite{foonjose}, \cite{Khoshnevisan:2013aa} and \cite{Khoshnevisan:2013ab}.

On some properties of a class of fractional stochastic heat equations

We consider nonlinear parabolic stochastic equations of the form $\partial_t u=\sL u + λσ(u)\dot ξ$ on the ball $B(0,\,R)$, where $\dot ξ$ denotes some Gaussian noise and $σ$ is Lipschitz continuous. Here $\sL$ corresponds to an $α$-stable process killed upon exiting $B(0, R)$. We will consider two types of noise; space-time white noise and spatially correlated noise. Under a linear growth condition on $σ$, we study growth properties of the second moment of the solutions.

On the behaviour of stochastic heat equations on bounded domains

Consider the following equation $$\partial_t u_t(x)=\frac{1}{2}\partial _{xx}u_t(x)+λσ(u_t(x))\dot{W}(t,\,x)$$ on an interval. Under Dirichlet boundary condition, we show that in the long run, the second moment of the solution grows exponentially fast if $λ$ is large enough. But if $λ$ is small, then the second moment eventually decays exponentially. If we replace the Dirichlet boundary condition by the Neumann one, then the second moment grows exponentially fast no matter what $λ$ is. We also provide various extensions.

Remarks on non-linear noise excitability of some stochastic heat equations

We consider nonlinear parabolic SPDEs of the form $\partial_t u=Δu + λσ(u)\dot w$ on the interval $(0, L)$, where $\dot w$ denotes space-time white noise, $σ$ is Lipschitz continuous. Under Dirichlet boundary conditions and a linear growth condition on $σ$, we show that the expected $L^2$-energy is of order $\exp[\text{const}\timesλ^4]$ as $λ\rightarrow \infty$. This significantly improves a recent result of Khoshnevisan and Kim. Our method is very different from theirs and it allows us to arrive at the same conclusion for the same equation but with Neumann boundary condition. This improves over another result of Khoshnevisan and Kim.

An asymptotic theory for randomly forced discrete nonlinear heat equations

We study discrete nonlinear parabolic stochastic heat equations of the form, $u_{n+1}(x)-u_n(x)=(\mathcal {L}u_n)(x)+σ(u_n(x))ξ_n(x)$, for $n\in {\mathbf{Z}}_+$ and $x\in {\mathbf{Z}}^d$, where $\boldsymbol ξ:=\{ξ_n(x)\}_{n\ge 0,x\in {\mathbf{Z}}^d}$ denotes random forcing and $\mathcal {L}$ the generator of a random walk on ${\mathbf{Z}}^d$. Under mild conditions, we prove that the preceding stochastic PDE has a unique solution that grows at most exponentially in time. And that, under natural conditions, it is "weakly intermittent." Along the way, we establish a comparison principle as well as a finite support property.

On non-existence of global solutions to a class of stochastic heat equations

We consider nonlinear parabolic SPDEs of the form $\partial_t u=-(-Δ)^{α/2} u + b(u) +σ(u)\dot w$, where$\dot w$ denotes space-time white noise. The functions $b$ and $σ$ are both locally Lipschitz continuous. Under some suitable conditions on the parameters of these SPDEs, we show that the second moment of their solutions blow up in finite time. This complements recent works of Khoshnevisan and his coauthors; see for instance Foondun and Khoshnevisan (2009), Foondun and Khoshnevisan (to appear, 2012) and Conus, Joseph, and Khoshnevisan, as well as those of Chow (Chow, 2009, and Chow, 2011). Furthermore, upon comparing our stochastic equations with their deterministic counterparts, we find that our results indicates that the presence of noise might affect the occurrence of blow-up.

Dynkin's isomorphism theorem and the stochastic heat equation

Consider the stochastic heat equation $\partial_t u = \sL u + \dot{W}$, where $\sL$ is the generator of a [Borel right] Markov process in duality. We show that the solution is locally mutually absolutely continuous with respect to a smooth perturbation of the Gaussian process that is associated, via Dynkin's isomorphism theorem, to the local times of the replica-symmetric process that corresponds to $\sL$.In the case that $\sL$ is the generator of a Lévy process on $\R^d$, our result gives a probabilistic explanation of the recent findings of Foondun et al.

On the Stochastic Heat Equation with Spatially-Colored Random forcing

We consider the stochastic heat equation of the following form \frac{\partial}{\partial t}u_t(x) = (\sL u_t)(x) +b(u_t(x)) + σ(u_t(x))\dot{F}_t(x)\quad \text{for}t>0, x\in \R^d, where $\sL$ is the generator of a Lévy process and $\dot{F}$ is a spatially-colored, temporally white, gaussian noise. We will be concerned mainly with the long-term behavior of the mild solution to this stochastic PDE. For the most part, we work under the assumptions that the initial data $u_0$ is a bounded and measurable function and $σ$ is nonconstant and Lipschitz continuous. In this case, we find conditions under which the preceding stochastic PDE admits a unique solution which is also \emph{weakly intermittent}. In addition, we study the same equation in the case that $\mathcal{L}u$ is replaced by its massive/dispersive analogue $\mathcal{L}u-λu$ where $λ\in\R$. Furthermore, we extend our analysis to the case that the initial data $u_0$ is a measure rather than a function. As it turns out, the stochastic PDE in question does not have a mild solution in this case. We circumvent this problem by introducing a new concept of a solution that we call a \emph{temperate solution}, and proceed to investigate the existence and uniqueness of a temperate solution. We are able to also give partial insight into the long-time behavior of the temperate solution when it exists and is unique. Finally, we look at the linearized version of our stochastic PDE, that is the case when $σ$ is identically equal to one [any other constant works also].In this case, we study not only the existence and uniqueness of a solution, but also the regularity of the solution when it exists and is unique.

On the global maximum of the solution to a stochastic heat equation with compact-support initial data

Consider a stochastic heat equation $\partial_t u = κ\partial^2_{xx}u+σ(u)\dot{w}$ for a space-time white noise $\dot{w}$ and a constant $κ>0$. Under some suitable conditions on the the initial function $u_0$ and $σ$, we show that the quantity \limsup_{t\to\infty}t^{-1}\ln\E(\sup_{x\in\R} |u_t(x)|^2) is bounded away from zero and infinity by explicit multiples of $1/κ$. Our proof works by demonstrating quantitatively that the peaks of the stochastic process $x\mapsto u_t(x)$ are highly concentrated for infinitely-many large values of $t$. In the special case of the parabolic Anderson model--where $σ(u)= λu$ for some $λ>0$--this "peaking" is a way to make precise the notion of physical intermittency.
