Level of noises and long time behavior of the solution for space-time fractional SPDE in bounded domains

In this paper we study the long time behavior of the solution to a certain class of space-time fractional stochastic equations with respect to the level $λ$ of a noise and show how the choice of the order $β\in (0, \,1)$ of the fractional time derivative affects the growth and decay behavior of their solution. We consider both the cases of white noise and colored noise. Our results extend the main results in "M. Foondun, \textit{Remarks on a fractional-time stochastic equation}, Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 149 (2021), 2235-2247" to fractional Laplacian as well as higher dimensional cases.

Pathwise Blowup of space-time fractional SPDEs

The finite time blowup in the almost sure sense of a class of space-time fractional stochastic partial differential equations is discussed. Both the cases of white noise and colored noise are considered. The sufficient and necessary condition between the blowup and Osgood condition is obtained when the spatial domain is bounded. And the sufficient condition for the blowup is obtained when the spatial domain is the whole space. The results in this paper could be regarded as extensions to some results in Foondun and Nualart, 2021.

A uniqueness determination of the fractional exponents in a three-parameter fractional diffusion

In this article, we consider the space-time Fractional (nonlocal) diffusion equation $$\partial_t^βu(t,x)={\mathtt{L}_D^{α_1,α_2}} u(t,x), \ \ t\geq 0, \ x\in D, $$ where $\partial_t^β$ is the Caputo fractional derivative of order $β\in (0,1)$ and the differential operator ${\mathtt{L}_D^{α_1,α_2}}$ is the generator of a Lévy process, sum of two symmetric independent $α_1-$stable and $α_2-$stable processes and ${D}$ is the open unit interval in $\mathbb{R}$. We consider a nonlocal inverse problem and show that the fractional exponents $β$ and $α_i, \ i=1,2$ are determined uniquely by the data $u(t, 0) = g(t),\ 0 < t < T.$ The uniqueness result is a theoretical background for determining experimentally the order of many anomalous diffusion phenomena, which are important in many fields, including physics and environmental engineering. We also discuss the numerical approximation of the inverse problem as a nonlinear least-squares problem and explore parameter sensitivity through numerical experiments.

Finite Time Blowup of Solutions to SPDEs with Bernstein Functions of the Laplacian

The blowup in finite time of solutions to SPDEs \begin{equation*} \partial_tu_t(x)=-ϕ(-Δ)u_t(x) +σ(u_t(x))\dotξ(t,x), \quad t>0,x\in\mathbb{R}^d, \end{equation*} { is} investigated, where $\dotξ$ could be either a white noise or a colored noise and $ϕ:(0,\infty)\to (0,\infty)$ is a Bernstein function. The sufficient conditions on $σ$, $\dotξ$ and the initial value that imply the non-existence of the global solution are discussed. The results in this paper generalise those in ``Foondun, M., Liu, W. and Nane, E. Some non-existence results for a class of stochastic partial differential equations. J. Differential Equations, 266 (5) (2019), 2575--2596.'', where the fractional Laplacian case was considered, i.e. $ϕ(-Δ)=(-Δ)^{α/2}$ ($1<α<2$).

Moment bounds of a class of stochastic heat equations driven by space-time colored noise in bounded domains

We consider the fractional stochastic heat type equation \begin{align*} \frac{\partial}{\partial t} u_t(x)=-(-Δ)^{α/2}u_t(x)+ξσ(u_t(x))\dot{F}(t,x),\ \ \ x\in D, \ \ t>0, \end{align*} with nonnegative bounded initial condition, where $α\in (0,2]$, $ξ>0$ is the noise level, $σ:\mathbb{R}\rightarrow\mathbb{R}$ is a globally Lipschitz function satisfying some growth conditions and the noise term behaves in space like the Riez kernel and is possibly correlated in time and $D$ is the unit open ball centered at the origin in $\mathbb{R}^d$. When the noise term is not correlated in time, we establish a change in the growth of the solution of these equations depending on the noise level $ξ$. On the other hand when the noise term behaves in time like the fractional Brownian motion with index $H\in (1/2,1)$, We also derive explicit bounds leading to a well-known intermittency property.

The nonlinear fractional diffusion equations with Nagumo-type sources and perturbed orders

We consider a class of nonlinear fractional equations having the Caputo fractional derivative of the time variable $t$, the fractional order of the self-adjoint positive definite unbounded operator in a Hilbert space and a singular nonlinear source. These equations are generalizations of some well-known fractional equation such as the fractional Cahn-Allen equation, the fractional Burger equation, the fractional Cahn-Hilliard equation, the fractional Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation, etc. We study both the initial value and the final value problem. Under some suitable assumptions, we investigate the existence, uniqueness of maximal solution, and stability of solution of the problems with respect to perturbed fractional orders. For $t=0$, we show that the final value problem is instable and deduce that the problem is ill-posed. A regularization method is proposed to recover the initial data from the inexact fractional orders and the final data. By some regularity assumptions of the exact solutions of the problems, we obtain an error estimate of Hölder type.

Space-time fractional stochastic partial differential equations with Lévy Noise

We consider non-linear time-fractional stochastic heat type equation $$\frac{\partial^βu}{\partial t^β}+ν(-Δ)^{α/2} u=I^{1-β}_t \bigg[\int_{\mathbb{R}^d}σ(u(t,x),h) \stackrel{\cdot}{\tilde N }(t,x,h)\bigg]$$ and $$\frac{\partial^βu}{\partial t^β}+ν(-Δ)^{α/2} u=I^{1-β}_t \bigg[\int_{\mathbb{R}^d}σ(u(t,x),h) \stackrel{\cdot}{N }(t,x,h)\bigg]$$ in $(d+1)$ dimensions, where $α\in (0,2]$ and $d<\min\{2,β^{-1}\}α$, $ν>0$, $\partial^β_t$ is the Caputo fractional derivative, $-(-Δ)^{α/2} $ is the generator of an isotropic stable process, $I^{1-β}_t$ is the fractional integral operator, ${N}(t,x)$ are Poisson random measure with $\tilde{N}(t,x)$ being the compensated Poisson random measure. $σ:{\mathbb{R}}\to{\mathbb{R}}$ is a Lipschitz continuous function. We prove existence and uniqueness of mild solutions to this equation. Our results extend the results in the case of parabolic stochastic partial differential equations obtained in "M. Foondun and D. Khoshnevisan. Intermittence and nonlinear parabolic stochastic partial differential equations. \emph{ Electron. J. Probab.} {\bf14} (2009), 548--568" and " J. B. Walsh. An Introduction to Stochastic Partial Differential Equations, Écoled'été de Probabilités de Saint-Flour, XIV|1984, Lecture Notes in Math., vol. 1180, Springer, Berlin, (1986), 265--439". Under the linear growth of $σ$, we show that the solution of the time fractional stochastic partial differential equation follows an exponential growth with respect to the time. We also show the nonexistence of the random field solution of both stochastic partial differential equations when $σ$ grows faster than linear.

Approximate solutions of inverse problems for nonlinear space fractional diffusion equations with randomly perturbed data

This paper is concerned with backward problem for nonlinear space fractional diffusion with additive noise on the right-hand side and the final value. To regularize the instable solution, we develop some new regularized method for solving the problem. In the case of constant coefficients, we use the truncation methods. In the case of perturbed time dependent coefficients, we apply a new quasi-reversibility method. We also show the convergence rate between the regularized solution and the sought solution under some a priori assumption on the sought solution.

Continuity of solutions of a class of fractional equations

In practice many problems related to space/time fractional equations depend on fractional parameters. But these fractional parameters are not known a priori in modelling problems. Hence continuity of the solutions with respect to these parameters is important for modelling purposes. In this paper we will study the continuity of the solutions of a class of equations including the Abel equations of the first and second kind, and time fractional diffusion type equations. We consider continuity with respect to the fractional parameters as well as the initial value.

Intermittency fronts for space-time fractional stochastic partial differential equations in $(d+1)$ dimensions

We consider time fractional stochastic heat type equation $$\partial^β_tu_t(x)=-ν(-Δ)^{α/2} u_t(x)+I^{1-β}_t[σ(u)\stackrel{\cdot}{W}(t,x)]$$ in $(d+1)$ dimensions, where $ν>0$, $β\in (0,1)$, $α\in (0,2]$, $d<\min\{2,β^{-1}\}\a$, $\partial^β_t$ is the Caputo fractional derivative, $-(-Δ)^{α/2} $ is the generator of an isotropic stable process, $\stackrel{\cdot}{W}(t,x)$ is space-time white noise, and $σ:\R \to\RR{R}$ is Lipschitz continuous. Mijena and Nane proved in \cite{JebesaAndNane1} that : (i) absolute moments of the solutions of this equation grows exponentially; and (ii) the distances to the origin of the farthest high peaks of those moments grow exactly linearly with time. The last result was proved under the assumptions $α=2$ and $d=1.$ In this paper we extend this result to the case $α=2$ and $d\in\{1,2,3\}.$

Inverse source problem for time fractional diffusion with discrete random noise

In this paper, we deal with the inverse source problem of determining a source in a time fractional diffusion equation where data are given at a fixed time. This problem is ill-posed, i.e., the solution does not depend continuously on the data. To regularize the instable solution, we use the trigonometric method in nonparametric regression associated with the truncated expansion method. We also investigate the convergence rate.

Non-linear noise excitation for some space-time fractional stochastic equations in bounded domains

In this paper we study non-linear noise excitation for the following class of space-time fractional stochastic equations in bounded domains: $$\partial^β_tu_t(x)=-ν(-Δ)^{α/2} u_t(x)+I^{1-β}_t[λσ(u)\stackrel{\cdot}{F}(t,x)]$$ in $(d+1)$ dimensions, where $ν>0, β\in (0,1)$, $α\in (0,2]$. The operator $\partial^β_t$ is the Caputo fractional derivative, $-(-Δ)^{α/2} $ is the generator of an isotropic stable process and $I^{1-β}_t$ is the fractional integral operator. The forcing noise denoted by $\stackrel{\cdot}{F}(t,x)$ is a Gaussian noise. The multiplicative non-linearity $σ:\RR{R}\to\RR{R}$ is assumed to be globally Lipschitz continuous. These equations were recently introduced by Mijena and Nane(J. Mijena and E. Nane. Space time fractional stochastic partial differential equations. Stochastic Process Appl. 125 (2015), no. 9, 3301--3326). We first study the existence and uniqueness of the solution of these equations {and} under suitable conditions on the initial function, we {also} study the asymptotic behavior of the solution with respect to the parameter $λ$. In particular, our results are significant extensions of those in Foondun et al (M. Foondun, K. Tian and W. Liu. On some properties of a class of fractional stochastic equations. Path stability of the solution of stochastic differential equation driven by time-changed Lévy noises

This paper studies path stabilities of the solution to stochastic differential equations (SDE) driven by time-changed Lévy noise. The conditions for the solution of time-changed SDE to be path stable and exponentially path stable are given. Moreover, we reveal the important role of the time drift in determining the path stability properties of the solution. Related examples are provided.

Some non-existence results for a class of stochastic partial differential equations

Consider the following stochastic partial differential equation, \begin{equation*} \partial_t u_t(x)= \mathcal{L}u_t(x)+ σ(u_t(x))\dot F(t,x)\quad{t>0}\quad\text{and}\quad x\in R^d. \end{equation*} The operator $\mathcal{L}$ is the generator of a strictly stable process and $\dot F$ is the random forcing term which is assumed to be Gaussian. Under some additional conditions, most notably on $σ$ and the initial condition, we show non-existence of global random field solutions. Our results are new and complement earlier works.

Stability of stochastic differential equation driven by time-changed Lévy noise

This paper studies stabilities of stochastic differential equation (SDE) driven by time-changed Lévy noise in both probability and moment sense. This provides more flexibility in modeling schemes in application areas including physics, biology, engineering, finance and hydrology. Necessary conditions for solution of time-changed SDE to be stable in different senses will be established. Connection between stability of solution to time-changed SDE and that to corresponding original SDE will be disclosed. Examples related to different stabilities will be given. We study SDEs with time-changed Lévy noise, where the time-change processes are inverse of general Lévy subordinators. These results are important improvements of the results in "Q. Wu, Stability of stochastic differential equation with respect to time-changed Brownian motion, 2016.".

Asymptotic properties of some space-time fractional stochastic equations

Consider non-linear time-fractional stochastic heat type equations of the following type, $$\partial^β_tu_t(x)=-ν(-Δ)^{α/2} u_t(x)+I^{1-β}_t[λσ(u)\stackrel{\cdot}{F}(t,x)]$$ in $(d+1)$ dimensions, where $ν>0, β\in (0,1)$, $α\in (0,2]$. The operator $\partial^β_t$ is the Caputo fractional derivative while $-(-Δ)^{α/2} $ is the generator of an isotropic stable process and $I^{1-β}_t$ is the fractional integral operator. The forcing noise denoted by $\stackrel{\cdot}{F}(t,x)$ is a Gaussian noise. And the multiplicative non-linearity $σ$ is assumed to be globally Lipschitz continuous. Under suitable conditions on the initial function, we study the asymptotic behaviour of the solution with respect to time and the parameter $λ$. In particular, our results are significant extensions of existing results. Along the way, we prove a number of interesting properties about the deterministic counterpart of the equation.

Correlation structure of time-changed Pearson diffusions

The stochastic solution to diffusion equations with polynomial coefficients is called a Pearson diffusion. If the time derivative is replaced by a distributed fractional derivative, the stochastic solution is called a fractional Pearson diffusion. This paper develops a formula for the covariance function of a fractional Pearson diffusion in steady state, in terms of generalized Mittag-Leffler functions. That formula shows that fractional Pearson diffusions are long-range dependent, with a correlation that falls off like a power law, whose exponent equals the smallest order of the distributed fractional derivative.

The time fractional stochastic heat type equations might be used to model phenomenon with random effects with thermal memory. We prove: (i) absolute moments of the solutions of this equation grows exponentially; and (ii) the distances to the origin of the farthest high peaks of those moments grow exactly linearly with time. Space-time fractional stochastic partial differential equations

We consider non-linear time-fractional stochastic heat type equation $$\partial^β_tu_t(x)=-ν(-Δ)^{α/2} u_t(x)+I^{1-β}_t[σ(u)\stackrel{\cdot}{W}(t,x)]$$ in $(d+1)$ dimensions, where $ν>0, β\in (0,1)$, $α\in (0,2]$ and $d<\min\{2,β^{-1}\}\a$, $\partial^β_t$ is the Caputo fractional derivative, $-(-Δ)^{α/2} $ is the generator of an isotropic stable process, $I^{1-β}_t$ is the fractional integral operator, $\stackrel{\cdot}{W}(t,x)$ is space-time white noise, and $σ:\RR{R}\to\RR{R}$ is Lipschitz continuous. Time fractional stochastic heat type equations might be used to model phenomenon with random effects with thermal memory. We prove existence and uniqueness of mild solutions to this equation and establish conditions under which the solution is continuous. Our results extend the results in the case of parabolic stochastic partial differential equations obtained in \cite{foondun-khoshnevisan-09, walsh}. In sharp contrast to the stochastic partial differential equations studied earlier in \cite{foondun-khoshnevisan-09, khoshnevisan-cbms, walsh}, in some cases our results give existence of random field solutions in spatial dimensions $d=1,2,3$. Under faster than linear growth of $σ$, we show that time fractional stochastic partial differential equation has no finite energy solution. This extends the result of Foondun and Parshad \cite{foondun-parshad} in the case of parabolic stochastic partial differential equations. We also establish a connection of the time fractional stochastic partial differential equations to higher order parabolic stochastic differential equations.

Coordinate changed random fields on manifolds

We introduce a class of time dependent random fields on compact Riemannian monifolds. These are represented by time-changed Brownian motions. These processes are time-changed diffusion, or the stochastic solution to the equation involving the Laplace-Beltrami operator and a time-fractional derivative of order $β\in (0,1)$. The time dependent random fields we present in this work can therefore be realized through composition and can be viewed as random fields on randomly varying manifolds.

Interacting time-fractional and $Δ^ν$ PDEs systems via Brownian-time and Inverse-stable-Lévy-time Brownian sheets

Lately, many phenomena in both applied and abstract mathematics and related disciplines have been expressed in terms of high order and fractional PDEs. Recently, Allouba introduced the Brownian-time Brownian sheet (BTBS) and connected it to a new system of fourth order interacting PDEs. The interaction in this multiparameter BTBS-PDEs connection is novel, leads to an intimately-connected linear system variant of the celebrated Kuramoto-Sivashinsky PDE, and is not shared with its one-time-parameter counterpart. It also means that these PDEs systems are to be solved for a family of functions, a feature exhibited in well known fluids dynamics models. On the other hand, the memory-preserving interaction between the PDE solution and the initial data is common to both the single and the multi parameter Brownian-time PDEs. Here, we introduce a new---even in the one parameter case---proof that judiciously combines stochastic analysis with analysis and fractional calculus to simultaneously link BTBS to a new system of temporally half-derivative interacting PDEs as well as to the fourth order system proved earlier and differently by Allouba. We then introduce a general class of random fields we call inverse-stable-Lévy-time Brownian sheets (ISLTBSs), and we link them to $β$-fractional-time-derivative systems of interacting PDEs for $0<β<1$. When $β=1/ν$, $ν\in\lbr2,3,...\rbr$, our proof also connects an ISLTBS to a system of memory-preserving $ν$-Laplacian interacting PDEs. Memory is expressed via a sum of temporally-scaled $k$-Laplacians of the initial data, $k=1,..., ν-1$. Using a Fourier-Laplace-transform-fractional-calculus approach, we give a conditional equivalence result that gives a necessary and sufficient condition for the equivalence between the fractional and the high order systems. In the one parameter case this condition automatically holds.

Time dependent random fields on spherical non-homogeneous surfaces

We introduce a class of isotropic time dependent random fields on the non-homogeneous sphere represented by a time-changed spherical Brownian motion of order ν\in (0,1] with which some anisotrophies can be captured in Cosmology. This process is a time-changed rotational diffusion (TRD) or the stochastic solution to the equation involving the spherical Laplace operator and a time-fractional derivative of order ν. TRD is a diffusion on the non-homogeneous sphere and therefore, the spherical coordinates given by TRD represent the coordinates of a non-homogeneous sphere by means of which an isotopic random field is indexed. The time dependent random fields we present in this work is therefore realized through composition and can be viewed as isotropic random field on randomly varying sphere.

$α$-Time Fractional Brownian Motion: PDE Connections and Local Times

For $0<α\leq 2$ and $0<H<1$, an $α$-time fractional Brownian motion is an iterated process $Z = \{Z(t)=W(Y(t)), t \ge 0\}$ obtained by taking a fractional Brownian motion $\{W(t), t\in \RR{R} \}$ with Hurst index $0<H<1$ and replacing the time parameter with a strictly $α$-stable Lévy process $\{Y(t), t\geq 0 \}$ in $\RR{R}$ independent of $\{W(t), t \in \R\}$. It is shown that such processes have natural connections to partial differential equations and, when $Y$ is a stable subordinator, can arise as scaling limit of randomly indexed random walks. The existence, joint continuity and sharp Hölder conditions in the set variable of the local times of a $d$-dimensional $α$-time fractional Brownian motion $X = \{X(t), t \in \R_+$\} defined by $ X(t)=\big(X_{1}(t),..., X_{d}(t) \big), $ where $t\geq 0$ and $X_{1},..., X_{d}$ are independent copies of $Z$, are investigated. Our methods rely on the strong local ' nondeterminism of fractional Brownian motion.

Fractal Dimensions for Continuous Time Random Walk Limits

In a continuous time random walk (CTRW), each random jump follows a random waiting time. CTRW scaling limits are time-changed processes that model anomalous diffusion. The outer process describes particle jumps, and the non-Markovian inner process (or time change) accounts for waiting times between jumps. This paper studies fractal properties of the sample functions of a time-changed process, and establishes some general results on the Hausdorff and packing dimensions of its range and graph. Then those results are applied to CTRW scaling limits.

Strong analytic solutions of fractional Cauchy problems

Fractional derivatives can be used to model time delays in a diffusion process. When the order of the fractional derivative is distributed over the unit interval, it is useful for modeling a mixture of delay sources. In some special cases distributed order derivative can be used to model ultra-slow diffusion. We extend the results of (Baeumer, B. and Meerschaert, M. M. Stochastic solutions for fractional Cauchy problems. Fract. Calc. Appl. Anal. 4 (2001), 481--500.) in the single order fractional derivative case to distributed order fractional derivative case. In particular, we develop the strong analytic solutions of distributed order fractional Cauchy problems.

The fractional Poisson process and the inverse stable subordinator

The fractional Poisson process is a renewal process with Mittag-Leffler waiting times. Its distributions solve a time-fractional analogue of the Kolmogorov forward equation for a Poisson process. This paper shows that a traditional Poisson process, with the time variable replaced by an independent inverse stable subordinator, is also a fractional Poisson process. This result unifies the two main approaches in the stochastic theory of time-fractional diffusion equations. The equivalence extends to a broad class of renewal processes that include models for tempered fractional diffusion, and distributed-order (e.g., ultraslow) fractional diffusion. The paper also establishes an interesting connection between the fractional Poisson process and Brownian time.

Time-Changed Poisson Processes

We consider time-changed Poisson processes, and derive the governing difference-differential equations (DDE) these processes. In particular, we consider the time-changed Poisson processes where the the time-change is inverse Gaussian, or its hitting time process, and discuss the governing DDE's. The stable subordinator, inverse stable subordinator and their iterated versions are also considered as time-changes. DDE's corresponding to probability mass functions of these time-changed processes are obtained. Finally, we obtain a new governing partial differential equation for the tempered stable subordinator of index $0<β<1,$ when $β$ is a rational number. We then use this result to obtain the governing DDE for the mass function of Poisson process time-changed by tempered stable subordinator. Our results extend and complement the results in Baeumer et al. \cite{B-M-N} and Beghin et al. \cite{BO-1} in several directions.

Fractional Cauchy problems on bounded domains: survey of recent results

In a fractional Cauchy problem, the usual first order time derivative is replaced by a fractional derivative. This problem was first considered by \citet{nigmatullin}, and \citet{zaslavsky} in $\mathbb R^d$ for modeling some physical phenomena. The fractional derivative models time delays in a diffusion process. We will give a survey of the recent results on the fractional Cauchy problem and its generalizations on bounded domains $D\subset \rd$ obtained in \citet{m-n-v-aop, mnv-2}. We also study the solutions of fractional Cauchy problem where the first time derivative is replaced with an infinite sum of fractional derivatives. We point out a connection to eigenvalue problems for the fractional time operators considered. The solutions to the eigenvalue problems are expressed by Mittag-Leffler functions and its generalized versions. The stochastic solution of the eigenvalue problems for the fractional derivatives are given by inverse subordinators.

Stochastic solutions of a class of Higher order Cauchy problems in $\rd$

We study solutions of a class of higher order partial differential equations in bounded domains. These partial differential equations appeared first time in the papers of Allouba and Zheng \cite{allouba1}, Baeumer, Meerschaert and Nane \cite{bmn-07}, Meerschaert, Nane and Vellaisamy \cite{MNV}, and Nane \cite{nane-h}. We express the solutions by subordinating a killed Markov process by a hitting time of a stable subordinator of index $0<β<1$, or by the absolute value of a symmetric $α$-stable process with $0<α\leq 2$, independent of the Markov process. In some special cases we represent the solutions by running composition of $k$ independent Brownian motions, called $k$-iterated Brownian motion for an integer $k\geq 2$. We make use of a connection between fractional-time diffusions and higher order partial differential equations established first by Allouba and Zheng \cite{allouba1} and later extended in several directions by Baeumer, Meerschaert and Nane \cite{bmn-07}.

Distributed-order fractional Cauchy problems on bounded domains

In a fractional Cauchy problem, the usual first order time derivative is replaced by a fractional derivative. The fractional derivative models time delays in a diffusion process. The order of the fractional derivative can be distributed over the unit interval, to model a mixture of delay sources. In this paper, we provide explicit strong solutions and stochastic analogues for distributed-order fractional Cauchy problems on bounded domains with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Stochastic solutions are constructed using a non-Markovian time change of a killed Markov process generated by a uniformly elliptic second order space derivative operator.

Higher order PDE's and iterated Processes

We introduce a class of stochastic processes based on symmetric $α$-stable processes. These are obtained by taking Markov processes and replacing the time parameter with the modulus of a symmetric $α$-stable process. We call them $α$-time processes. They generalize Brownian time processes studied in \cite{allouba1, allouba2, allouba3}, and they introduce new interesting examples. We establish the connection of $α-$time processes to some higher order PDE's for $α$ rational. We also study the exit problem for $α$-time processes as they exit regular domains and connect them to elliptic PDE's. We also obtain the PDE connection of subordinate killed Brownian motion in bounded domains of regular boundary.
