Diametral notions for elements of the unit ball of a Banach space

We introduce extensions of ΔΔ-points and Daugavet points in which slices are replaced by relative weakly open subsets (super ΔΔ-points and super Daugavet points) or by convex combinations of slices (ccs ΔΔ-points and ccs Daugavet points). We first give a general overview on these new concepts and provide some isometric consequences on the spaces. As examples: if a Banach space contains a super ΔΔ-point, then it does not admit an unconditional FDD with suppression constant smaller than two; if a real Banach space contains a ccs ΔΔ-point, then it does not admit a one-unconditional basis; if a Banach space contains a ccs Daugavet point, then every convex combination of slices of its unit ball has diameter two. We next characterize the notions in some classes of Banach spaces showing, for instance, that all the notions coincide in L1L_1-predual spaces and that all the notions but ccs Daugavet points coincide in L1L_1-spaces. We next remark on some examples which have previously appeared in the literature and provide some new intriguing examples: examples of super ΔΔ-points which are as closed as desired to strongly exposed points (hence failing to be Daugavet points in an extreme way); an example of a super ΔΔ-point which is strongly regular (hence failing to be a ccs ΔΔ-point in the strongest way); a super Daugavet point which fails to be a ccs ΔΔ-point. The extensions of the diametral notions to point in the open unit ball and the consequences on the spaces are also studied. Last, we investigate the Kuratowski measure of relative weakly open subsets and of convex combinations of slices in the presence of super ΔΔ-points or ccs ΔΔ-points, as well as for spaces enjoying diameter 2 properties. We conclude the paper with a section on open problems.

Ego4D: Around the World in 3,000 Hours of Egocentric Video

We introduce Ego4D, a massive-scale egocentric video dataset and benchmark suite. It offers 3,670 hours of daily-life activity video spanning hundreds of scenarios (household, outdoor, workplace, leisure, etc.) captured by 931 unique camera wearers from 74 worldwide locations and 9 different countries. The approach to collection is designed to uphold rigorous privacy and ethics standards with consenting participants and robust de-identification procedures where relevant. Ego4D dramatically expands the volume of diverse egocentric video footage publicly available to the research community. Portions of the video are accompanied by audio, 3D meshes of the environment, eye gaze, stereo, and/or synchronized videos from multiple egocentric cameras at the same event. Furthermore, we present a host of new benchmark challenges centered around understanding the first-person visual experience in the past (querying an episodic memory), present (analyzing hand-object manipulation, audio-visual conversation, and social interactions), and future (forecasting activities). By publicly sharing this massive annotated dataset and benchmark suite, we aim to push the frontier of first-person perception. Project page: https://ego4d-data.org/

On the compact operators case of the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property for numerical radius

We study the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property for numerical radius restricted to the case of compact operators (BPBp-nu for compact operators in short). We show that C0(L)C_0(L) spaces have the BPBp-nu for compact operators for every Hausdorff topological locally compact space LL. To this end, on the one hand, we provide some techniques allowing to pass the BPBp-nu for compact operators from subspaces to the whole space and, on the other hand, we prove some strong approximation property of C0(L)C_0(L) spaces and their duals. Besides, we also show that real Hilbert spaces and isometric preduals of ℓ1\ell_1 have the BPBp-nu for compact operators.

Captum: A unified and generic model interpretability library for PyTorch

In this paper we introduce a novel, unified, open-source model interpretability library for PyTorch [12]. The library contains generic implementations of a number of gradient and perturbation-based attribution algorithms, also known as feature, neuron and layer importance algorithms, as well as a set of evaluation metrics for these algorithms. It can be used for both classification and non-classification models including graph-structured models built on Neural Networks (NN). In this paper we give a high-level overview of supported attribution algorithms and show how to perform memory-efficient and scalable computations. We emphasize that the three main characteristics of the library are multimodality, extensibility and ease of use. Multimodality supports different modality of inputs such as image, text, audio or video. Extensibility allows adding new algorithms and features. The library is also designed for easy understanding and use. Besides, we also introduce an interactive visualization tool called Captum Insights that is built on top of Captum library and allows sample-based model debugging and visualization using feature importance metrics.

Examples and applications of the density of strongly norm attaining Lipschitz maps

We study the density of the set SNA⁡(M,Y)\operatorname{SNA}(M,Y) of those Lipschitz maps from a (complete pointed) metric space MM to a Banach space YY which strongly attain their norm (i.e.\ the supremum defining the Lipschitz norm is actually a maximum). We present new and somehow counterintuitive examples, and we give some applications. First, we show that SNA⁡(T,Y)\operatorname{SNA}(\mathbb T,Y) is not dense in Lip0(T,Y){\mathrm{Lip}}_0(\mathbb T,Y) for any Banach space YY, where T\mathbb T denotes the unit circle in the Euclidean plane. This provides the first example of a Gromov concave metric space (i.e.\ every molecule is a strongly exposed point of the unit ball of the Lipschitz-free space) for which the density does not hold. Next, we construct metric spaces MM satisfying that SNA⁡(M,Y)\operatorname{SNA}(M,Y) is dense in Lip0(M,Y){\mathrm{Lip}}_0(M,Y) regardless YY but which contains an isometric copy of [0,1][0,1] and so the Lipschitz-free space F(M)\mathcal F(M) fails the Radon--Nikodým property, answering in the negative a posed question. Furthermore, an example MM can be produced failing all the previously known sufficient conditions to get the density of strongly norm attaining Lipschitz maps. Finally, among other applications, we prove that given a compact metric MM which does not contains any isometric copy of [0,1][0,1] and a Banach space YY, if SNA⁡(M,Y)\operatorname{SNA}(M,Y) is dense, then SNA⁡(M,Y)\operatorname{SNA}(M,Y) actually contains an open dense subset and BF(M)=co‾(str-exp⁡(BF(M)))B_{\mathcal F(M)}=\overline{\mathrm{co}}(\operatorname{str-exp}(B_{\mathcal F(M)})). Further, we show that if MM is a boundedly compact metric space for which SNA⁡(M,R)\operatorname{SNA}(M,\mathbb R) is dense in Lip0(M,R){\mathrm{Lip}}_0(M,\mathbb R), then the unit ball of the Lipschitz-free space on MM is the closed convex hull of its strongly exposed points.

On quasi norm attaining operators between Banach spaces

We introduce a weakened notion of norm attainment for bounded linear operators between Banach spaces which we call \emph{quasi norm attaining operators}. An operator T ⁣:X⟶YT\colon X \longrightarrow Y between the Banach spaces XX and YY is quasi norm attaining if there is a sequence (xn)(x_n) of norm one elements in XX such that (Txn)(Tx_n) converges to some u∈Yu\in Y with ∥u∥=∥T∥\|u\|=\|T\|. Norm attaining operators in the usual sense (i.e.\ operators for which there is a point in the unit ball where the norm of its image equals the norm of the operator) and compact operators satisfy this definition. The main result of the paper is that strong Radon-Nikodým operators such as weakly compact operators can be approximated by quasi norm attaining operators (even by a stronger version of the definition), which does not hold for norm attaining operators. This allows us to give characterizations of the Radon-Nikodým property in term of the denseness of quasi norm attaining operators for both domain spaces and range spaces, extending previous results by Bourgain and Huff. We also present positive and negative results on the denseness of quasi norm attaining operators, characterize both finite dimensionality and reflexivity in terms of quasi norm attaining operators, discuss conditions to obtain that quasi norm attaining operators are actually norm attaining, study the relationship with the norm attainment of the adjoint operator, and present some stability properties. We finish the paper with some open questions.

Some stability properties for the Bishop--Phelps--Bollobás property for Lipschitz maps

We study the stability behavior of the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property for Lipschitz maps (Lip-BPB property). This property is a Lipschitz version of the classical Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property and deals with the possibility of approximating a Lipschitz map that almost attains its (Lipschitz) norm at a pair of distinct points by a Lipschitz map attaining its norm at a pair of distinct points (relatively) very closed to the previous one. We first study the stability of this property under the (metric) sum of the domain spaces. Next, we study when it is possible to pass the Lip-BPB property from scalar functions to some vector-valued maps, getting some positive results related to the notions of ΓΓ-flat operators and ACKACK structure. We get sharper results for the case of Lipschitz compact maps. The behaviour of the property with respect to absolute sums of the target space is also studied. We also get results similar to the above ones about the density of strongly norm attaining Lipschitz maps and of Lipschitz compact maps.

Norm attaining Lipschitz functionals

We prove that for a given Banach space XX, the subset of norm attaining Lipschitz functionals in Lip0(X)\mathrm{Lip}_0(X) is weakly dense but not strongly dense. Then we introduce a weaker concept of directional norm attainment and demonstrate that for a uniformly convex XX the set of directionally norm attaining Lipschitz functionals is strongly dense in Lip0(X)\mathrm{Lip}_0(X) and, moreover, that an analogue of the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás theorem is valid.

On a second numerical index for Banach spaces

We introduce a second numerical index for real Banach spaces with non-trivial Lie algebra, as the best constant of equivalence between the numerical radius and the quotient of the operator norm modulo the Lie algebra. We present a number of examples and results concerning absolute sums, duality, vector-valued function spaces\ldots which show that, in many cases, the behaviour of this second numerical index differs from the one of the classical numerical index. As main results, we prove that Hilbert spaces have second numerical index one and that they are the only spaces with this property among the class of Banach spaces with one-unconditional basis and non-trivial Lie algebra. Besides, an application to the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property for numerical radius is given.

The Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property for compact operators

We study the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property (BPBp for short) for compact operators. We present some abstract techniques which allows to carry the BPBp for compact operators from sequence spaces to function spaces. As main applications, we prove the following results. Let XX, YY be Banach spaces. If (c0,Y)(c_0,Y) has the BPBp for compact operators, then so do (C0(L),Y)(C_0(L),Y) for every locally compact Hausdorff topological space LL and (X,Y)(X,Y) whenever X∗X^* is isometrically isomorphic to ℓ1\ell_1. If X∗X^* has the Radon-Nikodým property and (ℓ1(X),Y)(\ell_1(X),Y) has the BPBp for compact operators, then so does (L1(μ,X),Y)(L_1(μ,X),Y) for every positive measure μμ; as a consequence, (L1(μ,X),Y)(L_1(μ,X),Y) has the the BPBp for compact operators when XX and YY are finite-dimensional or YY is a Hilbert space and X=c0X=c_0 or X=Lp(ν)X=L_p(ν) for any positive measure νν and 1<p<∞1< p< \infty. For 1⩽p<∞1\leqslant p <\infty, if (X,ℓp(Y))(X,\ell_p(Y)) has the BPBp for compact operators, then so does (X,Lp(μ,Y))(X,L_p(μ,Y)) for every positive measure μμ such that L1(μ)L_1(μ) is infinite-dimensional. If (X,Y)(X,Y) has the BPBp for compact operators, then so do (X,L∞(μ,Y))(X,L_\infty(μ,Y)) for every σσ-finite positive measure μμ and (X,C(K,Y))(X,C(K,Y)) for every compact Hausdorff topological space KK.

The Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property for operators between spaces of continuous functions

We show that the space of bounded and linear operators between spaces of continuous functions on compact Hausdorff topological spaces has the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property. A similar result is also proved for the class of compact operators from the space of continuous functions vanishing at infinity on a locally compact and Hausdorff topological space into a uniformly convex space, and for the class of compact operators from a Banach space into a predual of an L1L_1-space.

Lushness, numerical index 1 and the Daugavet property in rearrangement invariant spaces

We show that for spaces with 1-unconditional bases lushness, the alternative Daugavet property and numerical index~1 are equivalent. In the class of rearrangement invariant (r.i.)\ sequence spaces the only examples of spaces with these properties are c0c_0, ℓ1\ell_1 and ℓ∞\ell_\infty. The only lush r.i.\ separable function space on [0,1][0,1] is L1[0,1]L_1[0,1]; the same space is the only r.i.\ separable function space on [0,1][0,1] with the Daugavet property over the reals.

Isometries on extremely non-complex Banach spaces

Given a separable Banach space EE, we construct an extremely non-complex Banach space (i.e. a space satisfying that ∥Id+T2∥=1+∥T2∥\|Id + T^2\|=1+\|T^2\| for every bounded linear operator TT on it) whose dual contains E∗E^* as an LL-summand. We also study surjective isometries on extremely non-complex Banach spaces and construct an example of a real Banach space whose group of surjective isometries reduces to ±Id\pm Id, but the group of surjective isometries of its dual contains the group of isometries of a separable infinite-dimensional Hilbert space as a subgroup.

On the numerical index of real Lp(μ)L_p(μ)-spaces

We give a lower bound for the numerical index of the real space Lp(μ)L_p(μ) showing, in particular, that it is non-zero for p≠2p\neq 2. In other words, it is shown that for every bounded linear operator TT on the real space Lp(μ)L_p(μ), one has $$ \sup{\Bigl|\int |x|^{p-1}\sign(x) T x dμ\Bigr| : x\in L_p(μ), \|x\|=1} \geq \frac{M_p}{12\e}\|T\| $$ where Mp=max⁡t∈[0,1]∣tp−1−t∣1+tp>0M_p=\max_{t\in[0,1]}\frac{|t^{p-1}-t|}{1+t^p}>0 for every p≠2p\neq 2. It is also shown that for every bounded linear operator TT on the real space Lp(μ)L_p(μ), one has $$ \sup{\int |x|^{p-1}|Tx| dμ: x\in L_p(μ), \|x\|=1} \geq \frac{1}{2\e}\|T\|. $$

On the numerical radius of operators in Lebesgue spaces

We show that the absolute numerical index of the space Lp(μ)L_p(μ) is p−1/pq−1/qp^{-1/p} q^{-1/q} (where 1/p+1/q=11/p+1/q=1). In other words, we prove that sup⁡{∫∣x∣p−1∣Tx∣ dμ : x∈Lp(μ), ∥x∥p=1} ≥ p−1pq−1q ∥T∥ \sup\{\int |x|^{p-1}|Tx|\, dμ\, : \ x\in L_p(μ),\,\|x\|_p=1\} \,\geq \,p^{-\frac{1}{p}} q^{-\frac{1}{q}}\,\|T\| for every T∈L(Lp(μ))T\in \mathcal{L}(L_p(μ)) and that this inequality is the best possible when the dimension of Lp(μ)L_p(μ) is greater than one. We also give lower bounds for the best constant of equivalence between the numerical radius and the operator norm in Lp(μ)L_p(μ) for atomless μμ when restricting to rank-one operators or narrow operators.
