We compute the numerical index of the two-dimensional real Lp space for 56≤p≤23 and 3≤p≤6.
We introduce a second numerical index for real Banach spaces with non-trivial Lie algebra, as the best constant of equivalence between the numerical radius and the quotient of the operator norm modulo the Lie algebra. We present a number of examples and results concerning absolute sums, duality, vector-valued function spaces\ldots which show that, in many cases, the behaviour of this second numerical index differs from the one of the classical numerical index. As main results, we prove that Hilbert spaces have second numerical index one and that they are the only spaces with this property among the class of Banach spaces with one-unconditional basis and non-trivial Lie algebra. Besides, an application to the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás property for numerical radius is given.
We show that for spaces with 1-unconditional bases lushness, the alternative Daugavet property and numerical index~1 are equivalent. In the class of rearrangement invariant (r.i.)\ sequence spaces the only examples of spaces with these properties are c0, ℓ1 and ℓ∞. The only lush r.i.\ separable function space on [0,1] is L1[0,1]; the same space is the only r.i.\ separable function space on [0,1] with the Daugavet property over the reals.
Given a separable Banach space E, we construct an extremely non-complex Banach space (i.e. a space satisfying that ∥Id+T2∥=1+∥T2∥ for every bounded linear operator T on it) whose dual contains E∗ as an L-summand. We also study surjective isometries on extremely non-complex Banach spaces and construct an example of a real Banach space whose group of surjective isometries reduces to ±Id, but the group of surjective isometries of its dual contains the group of isometries of a separable infinite-dimensional Hilbert space as a subgroup.
We give a lower bound for the numerical index of the real space Lp(μ) showing, in particular, that it is non-zero for p=2. In other words, it is shown that for every bounded linear operator T on the real space Lp(μ), one has $$ \sup{\Bigl|\int |x|^{p-1}\sign(x) T x dμ\Bigr| : x\in L_p(μ), \|x\|=1} \geq \frac{M_p}{12\e}\|T\| $$ where Mp=maxt∈[0,1]1+tp∣tp−1−t∣>0 for every p=2. It is also shown that for every bounded linear operator T on the real space Lp(μ), one has $$ \sup{\int |x|^{p-1}|Tx| dμ: x\in L_p(μ), \|x\|=1} \geq \frac{1}{2\e}\|T\|. $$
We show that the absolute numerical index of the space Lp(μ) is p−1/pq−1/q (where 1/p+1/q=1). In other words, we prove that sup{∫∣x∣p−1∣Tx∣dμ: x∈Lp(μ),∥x∥p=1}≥p−p1q−q1∥T∥ for every T∈L(Lp(μ)) and that this inequality is the best possible when the dimension of Lp(μ) is greater than one. We also give lower bounds for the best constant of equivalence between the numerical radius and the operator norm in Lp(μ) for atomless μ when restricting to rank-one operators or narrow operators.
