Plastic pairs of metric spaces

We address pairs $(X, Y)$ of metric spaces with the following property: for every mapping $f: X \to Y$ the existence of points $x, y \in X$ with $d(f(x),f(y)) > d(x,y)$ implies the existence of $\widetilde{x}, \widetilde{y}\in X$ for which $d(f(\widetilde{x}),f(\widetilde{y})) < d(\widetilde{x},\widetilde{y})$. We give sufficient conditions for this property and for its uniform version in terms of finite $\varepsilon$-nets and finite $\varepsilon$-separated subsets.

Banach actions preserving unconditional convergence

Let $A,X,Y$ be Banach spaces and $A\times X\to Y$, $(a,x)\mapsto ax$, be a continuous bilinear function, called a *Banach action*. We say that this action *preserves unconditional convergence* if for every bounded sequence $(a_n)_{n\inω}$ in $A$ and unconditionally convergent series $\sum_{n\inω}x_n$ in $X$ the series $\sum_{n\inω}a_nx_n$ is unconditionally convergent. We prove that a Banach action $A\times X\to Y$ preserves unconditional convergence if and only if for any linear functional $y^*\in Y^*$ the operator $D_{y^*}:X\to A^*$, $D_{y^*}(x)(a)=y^*(ax)$, is absolutely summing. Combining this characterization with the famous Grothendieck theorem on the absolute summability of operators from $\ell_1$ to $\ell_2$, we prove that a Banach action $A\times X\to Y$ preserves unconditional convergence if $A$ is a Hilbert space possessing an orthonormal basis $(e_n)_{n\inω}$ such that for every $x\in X$ the series $\sum_{n\inω}e_nx$ is weakly absolutely convergent. Applying known results of Garling on the absolute summability of diagonal operators between sequence spaces, we prove that for (finite or infinite) numbers $p,q,r\in[1,\infty]$ with $\frac1r\le\frac1p+\frac1q$, the coordinatewise multplication $\ell_p\times\ell_q\to\ell_r$ preserves unconditional convergence if and only if one of the following conditions holds: (i) $p\le 2$ and $q\le r$, (ii) $2<p<q\le r$, (iii) $2<p=q<r$, (iv) $r=\infty$, (v) $2\le q<p\le r$, (vi) $q<2<p$ and $\frac1p+\frac1q\ge\frac1r+\frac12$.

Closed linear spaces consisting of strongly norm attaining Lipschitz mappings

Given a pointed metric space $M$, we study when there exist $n$-dimensional linear subspaces of $\operatorname{Lip}_0(M)$ consisting of strongly norm-attaining Lipschitz functionals, for $n\in\mathbb{N}$. We show that this is always the case for infinite metric spaces, providing a definitive answer to the question. We also study the possible sizes of such infinite-dimensional closed linear subspaces $Y$, as well as the inverse question, that is, the possible sizes of the metric space $M$ given that such a subspace $Y$ exists. We also show that if the metric space $M$ is $σ$-precompact, then the aforementioned subspaces $Y$ need to be always separable and isomorphically polyhedral, and we show that for spaces containing $[0,1]$ isometrically, they can be infinite-dimensional.

Norm attaining Lipschitz functionals

We prove that for a given Banach space $X$, the subset of norm attaining Lipschitz functionals in $\mathrm{Lip}_0(X)$ is weakly dense but not strongly dense. Then we introduce a weaker concept of directional norm attainment and demonstrate that for a uniformly convex $X$ the set of directionally norm attaining Lipschitz functionals is strongly dense in $\mathrm{Lip}_0(X)$ and, moreover, that an analogue of the Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás theorem is valid.

Lushness, numerical index 1 and the Daugavet property in rearrangement invariant spaces

We show that for spaces with 1-unconditional bases lushness, the alternative Daugavet property and numerical index~1 are equivalent. In the class of rearrangement invariant (r.i.)\ sequence spaces the only examples of spaces with these properties are $c_0$, $\ell_1$ and $\ell_\infty$. The only lush r.i.\ separable function space on $[0,1]$ is $L_1[0,1]$; the same space is the only r.i.\ separable function space on $[0,1]$ with the Daugavet property over the reals.

Thickness of the unit sphere, $\ell_1$-types, and the almost Daugavet property

We study those Banach spaces $X$ for which $S_X$ does not admit a finite $\eps$-net consisting of elements of $S_X$ for any $\eps < 2$. We give characterisations of this class of spaces in terms of $\ell_1$-type sequences and in terms of the almost Daugavet property. The main result of the paper is: a separable Banach space $X$ is isomorphic to a space from this class if and only if $X$ contains an isomorphic copy of $\ell_1$.

Quotients of Banach spaces with the Daugavet property

We consider a general concept of Daugavet property with respect to a norming subspace. This concept covers both the usual Daugavet property and its weak$^*$ analogue. We introduce and study analogues for narrow operators and rich subspaces in this general setting and apply the results to show that a quotient of $L_1[0,1]$ over an $\ell_1$-subspace can fail the Daugavet property. The latter answers a question posed to us by A. Pelczynski in the negative.

A Banach space with the Schur and the Daugavet property

We show that a minor refinement of the Bourgain-Rosenthal construction of a Banach space without the Radon-Nikodym property which contains no bounded $δ$-trees yields a space with the Daugavet property and the Schur property. Using this example we answer some open questions on the structure of such spaces; in particular we show that the Daugavet property is not inherited by ultraproducts.

Narrow operators on vector-valued sup-normed spaces

We characterise narrow and strong Daugavet operators on $C(K,E)$-spaces; these are in a way the largest sensible classes of operators for which the norm equation $\|Id+T\| = 1+\|T\|$ is valid. For certain separable range spaces $E$ including all finite-dimensional ones and locally uniformly convex ones we show that an unconditionally pointwise convergent sum of narrow operators on $C(K,E)$ is narrow, which implies for instance the known result that these spaces do not have unconditional FDDs. In a different vein, we construct two narrow operators on $C([0,1],\ell_1)$ whose sum is not narrow.

Banach spaces with the Daugavet property

A Banach space $X$ is said to have the Daugavet property if every operator $T: X\to X$ of rank~$1$ satisfies $\|Id+T\| = 1+\|T\|$. We show that then every weakly compact operator satisfies this equation as well and that $X$ contains a copy of $\ell_{1}$. However, $X$ need not contain a copy of $L_{1}$. We also study pairs of spaces $X\subset Y$ and operators $T: X\to Y$ satisfying $\|J+T\|=1+\|T\|$, where $J: X\to Y$ is the natural embedding. This leads to the result that a Banach space with the Daugavet property does not embed into a space with an unconditional basis. In another direction, we investigate spaces where the set of operators with $\|Id+T\|=1+\|T\|$ is as small as possible and give characterisations in terms of a smoothness condition.
