Improving and Maximal Inequalities for Primes in Progressions

Assume that $ y < N$ are integers, and that $ (b,y) =1$. Define an average along the primes in a progression of diameter $ y$, given by integer $ (b,y)=1 $. \begin{align*} A_{N,y,b} := \frac{ϕ(y)}{N} \sum _{\substack{n <N\\n\equiv b\pmod{y}}} Λ(n) f(x-n) \end{align*} Above, $Λ$ is the von Mangoldt function and $ϕ$ is the totient function. We establish improving and maximal inequalities for these averages. These bounds are uniform in the choice of progression. For instance, for $ 1< r < \infty $ there is an integer $N _{y, r}$ so that \begin{align*} \lVert \sup _{N>N _{y,r}} \lvert A_{N,y,b} f \rvert \rVert_{r}\ll \lVert f\rVert_{r}. \end{align*} The implied constant is only a function of $ r$. The uniformity over progressions imposes several novel elements on the proof.

$\ell^p$-improving inequalities for Discrete Spherical Averages

Let $ λ^2 \in \mathbb N $, and in dimensions $ d\geq 5$, let $ A_{λ} f (x)$ denote the average of $ f \;:\; \mathbb Z ^{d} \to \mathbb R $ over the lattice points on the sphere of radius $λ$ centered at $x$. We prove $ \ell ^{p}$ improving properties of $ A_{λ}$. \begin{equation*} \lVert A_{λ}\rVert_{\ell ^{p} \to \ell ^{p'}} \leq C_{d,p, ω(λ^2 )} λ^{d ( 1-\frac{2}p)}, \qquad \tfrac{d-1}{d+1} < p \leq \frac{d} {d-2}. \end{equation*} It holds in dimension $ d =4$ for odd $ λ^2 $. The dependence is in terms of $ ω(λ^2 )$, the number of distinct prime factors of $ λ^2 $. These inequalities are discrete versions of a classical inequality of Littman and Strichartz on the $ L ^{p}$ improving property of spherical averages on $ \mathbb R ^{d}$, in particular they are scale free, in a natural sense. The proof uses the decomposition of the corresponding multiplier whose properties were established by Magyar-Stein-Wainger, and Magyar. We then use a proof strategy of Bourgain, which dominates each part of the decomposition by an endpoint estimate.

On logarithmic bounds of maximal sparse operators

Given sparse collections of measurable sets $\mathcal S_k$, $k=1,2,\ldots ,N$, in a general measure space $(X,\mathfrak M,μ)$, let $ Λ_{\mathcal S_k}$ be the sparse operator, corresponding to $\mathcal S_k$. We show that the maximal sparse function $ Λf = \max _{1\le k\le N} Λ_{\mathcal S_k} f $ satisfies \begin{align*} &\| Λ\| _{L^p(X) \mapsto L^{p,\infty}(X)} \lesssim \log N\cdot \|M_{\mathcal S}\|_{L^p(X) \mapsto L^{p,\infty}(X)},\,1\le p<\infty, \\ &\lVert Λ\rVert _{L^p(X) \mapsto L^p(X)} \lesssim (\log N)^{\max\{1,1/(p-1)\}}\cdot \|M_{\mathcal S}\|_{L^p(X) \mapsto L^p(X)},\, 1<p<\infty, \end{align*} where $M_{\mathcal S}$ is the maximal function corresponding to the collection of sets $\mathcal S=\cup_k\mathcal S_k$. As a consequence, one can derive norm bounds for maximal functions formed from taking measurable selections of one-dimensional Calderón-Zygmund operators in the plane. Prior results of this type had a fixed choice of Calderón-Zygmund operator for each direction.

One Bit Sensing, Discrepancy, and Stolarsky Principle

A sign-linear one bit map from the $ d$-dimensional sphere $ \mathbb S ^{d}$ to the $ n$-dimensional Hamming cube $ H^n= \{ -1, +1\} ^{n}$ is given by $$ x \to \{ \mbox{sign} (x \cdot z_j) \;:\; 1\leq j \leq n\} $$ where $ \{z_j\} \subset \mathbb S ^{d}$. For $ 0 < δ< 1$, we estimate $ N (d, δ)$, the smallest integer $ n$ so that there is a sign-linear map which has the $ δ$-restricted isometric property, where we impose normalized geodesic distance on $ \mathbb S ^{d}$, and Hamming metric on $ H^n$. Up to a polylogarithmic factor, $ N (d, δ) \approx δ^{-2 + \frac2{d+1}}$, which has a dimensional correction in the power of $ δ$. This is a question that arises from the one bit sensing literature, and the method of proof follows from geometric discrepancy theory. We also obtain an analogue of the Stolarsky invariance principle for this situation, which implies that minimizing the $L^2$ average of the embedding error is equivalent to minimizing the discrete energy $\sum_{i,j} \big( \frac12 - d(z_i,z_j) \big)^2$, where $d$ is the normalized geodesic distance.

Sparse Bounds for Random Discrete Carleson Theorems

We study discrete random variants of the Carleson maximal operator. Intriguingly, these questions remain subtle and difficult, even in this setting. Let $\{X_m\}$ be an independent sequence of $\{0,1\}$ random variables with expectations \[ \mathbb E X_m = σ_m = m^{-α}, \ 0 < α< 1/2, \] and $ S_m = \sum_{k=1} ^{m} X_k$. Then the maximal operator below almost surely is bounded from $ \ell ^{p}$ to $ \ell ^{p}$, provided the Minkowski dimension of $ Λ\subset [-1/2, 1/2]$ is strictly less than $ 1- α$. \[ \sup_{λ\in Λ} \Bigl| \sum_{m\neq 0} X_{\lvert m\rvert } \frac{e( λm )}{ {\rm sgn} (m)S_{ |m| }} f(x- m) \Bigr|. \] This operator also satisfies a sparse type bound. The form of the sparse bound immediately implies weighted estimates in all $ \ell ^{2}$, which are novel in this setting. Variants and extensions are also considered.

Two Weight Inequalities for Riesz Transforms: Uniformly Full Dimension Weights

Fix an integer $ n$ and number $d$, $ 0< d\neq n-1 \leq n$, and two weights $ w$ and $ σ$ on $ \mathbb R ^{n}$. We two extra conditions (1) no common point masses and (2) the two weights separately are not concentrated on a set of codimension one, uniformly over locations and scales. (This condition holds for doubling weights.) Then, we characterize the two weight inequality for the $ d$-dimensional Riesz transform on $ \mathbb R ^{n}$, \begin{equation*} \sup_{0< a < b < \infty}\left\lVert \int_{a < \lvert x-y\rvert < b} f (y) \frac {x-y} {\lvert x-y\rvert ^{d+1}} \; σ(dy) \right\rVert_{L ^{2} (\mathbb{R}^n;w)} \le \mathscr N \lVert f\rVert_{L ^2 (\mathbb{R}^n;σ)} \end{equation*} in terms of these two conditions, and their duals: For finite constants $ \mathscr A_2$ and $ \mathscr T$, uniformly over all cubes $ Q\subset \mathbb R ^{n}$ \begin{gather*} \frac {w (Q)} {\lvert Q\rvert ^{d/n}} \int_{\mathbb R ^{n}} \frac {\lvert Q\rvert ^{d/n}} {\lvert Q\rvert ^{2d/n} +{dist}(x, Q) ^{2d/n}} \; σ(dx) \leq \mathscr A_2 \\ \int_{Q} \lvert \mathsf R_σ \mathbf 1_{Q} (x)\rvert ^2 \; w(dx) \le \mathscr T ^2 σ(Q), \end{gather*} where $ \mathsf R_σ$ denotes any of the truncations of the Riesz transform as above, the dual conditions are obtained by interchanging the roles of the two weights. Examples show that a key step of the proof fails in absence of the extra geometric condition imposed on the weights.

Bloom's Inequality: Commutators in a Two-Weight Setting

In 1985, Bloom characterized the boundedness of the commutator $[b,H]$ as a map between a pair of weighted $L^{p}$ spaces, where both weights are in $A_p$. The characterization is in terms of a novel $BMO$ condition. We give a 'modern' proof of this result, in the case of $p=2$. In a subsequent paper, this argument will be used to generalize Bloom's result to all Calderón-Zygmund operators and dimensions.

On Entropy Bumps for Calderón-Zygmund Operators

We study two weight inequalities in the recent innovative language of `entropy' due to Treil-Volberg. The inequalities are extended to $ L ^{p}$, for $ 1< p \neq 2 < \infty $, with new short proofs. A result proved is as follows. Let $ \varepsilon $ be a monotonic increasing function on $ (1, \infty)$ which satisfy $ \int _{1} ^{\infty} \frac {dt} {\varepsilon (t) t} = 1$. Let $ σ$ and $ w$ be two weights on $ \mathbb R ^{d}$. If this supremum is finite, for a choice of $ 1< p < \infty $, $$ \sup _{Q} \biggl[ \frac {σ(Q)} {\lvert Q\rvert} \biggr]^{p-1} \frac {\int _{Q} M (σχ_{Q})} {σ(Q)} \cdot \frac {w (Q)} {\lvert Q\rvert}\biggl[ \frac {\int _{Q} M (w χ_{Q})} {w (Q)}\biggr]^{p-1} < \infty, $$ then any Calderón-Zygmund operator $ T$ satisfies the bound $ \lVert T _σ f \rVert _{L ^{p} (w)} \lesssim \lVert f\rVert _{L ^{p} (σ)} $.

Random Tessellations, Restricted Isometric Embeddings, and One Bit Sensing

We obtain mproved bounds for one bit sensing. For instance, let $ K_s$ denote the set of $ s$-sparse unit vectors in the sphere $ \mathbb S ^{n}$ in dimension $ n+1$ with sparsity parameter $ 0 < s < n+1$ and assume that $ 0 < δ< 1$. We show that for $ m \gtrsim δ^{-2} s \log \frac ns$, the one-bit map $$ x \mapsto \bigl[ {sgn} \langle x,g_j \rangle \bigr] _{j=1} ^{m}, $$ where $ g_j$ are iid gaussian vectors on $ \mathbb R ^{n+1}$, with high probability has $ δ$-RIP from $ K_s$ into the $ m$-dimensional Hamming cube. These bounds match the bounds for the {linear} $ δ$-RIP given by $ x \mapsto \frac 1m[\langle x,g_j \rangle ] _{j=1} ^{m} $, from the sparse vectors in $ \mathbb R ^{n}$ into $ \ell ^{1}$. In other words, the one bit and linear RIPs are equally effective. There are corresponding improvements for other one-bit properties, such as the sign-product RIP property.

The Two Weight Inequality for the Hilbert Transform: A Primer

Recent work of Lacey-Sawyer-Shen-Uriarte-Tuero and Lacey have established a conjecture of Nazarov-Treil-Volberg, giving a real-variable characterization of the two weight inequality for the Hilbert transform, provided the pair of weights do not share a common point mass. In this paper, the characterization is proved, collecting details from across several papers, compactness is characterized, all relevant estimates are proved, counterexamples are details, and areas of application are indicated.

Two Weight Inequality for the Hilbert Transform: A Real Variable Characterization, I

The two weight inequality for the Hilbert transform arises in the settings of analytic function spaces, operator theory, and spectral theory, and what would be most useful is a characterization in the simplest real-variable terms. We show that the $L^2$ to $L^2$ inequality holds if and only if two L^2 to weak-L^2 inequalities hold. This is a corollary to a characterization in terms of a two-weight Poisson inequality, and a pair of testing inequalities on bounded functions.

Local $Tb$ theorem with $L^2$ testing conditions and general measures: Calderón-Zygmund operators

Local $Tb$ theorems with $L^p$ type testing conditions, which are not scale invariant, have been studied widely in the case of the Lebesgue measure. Until very recently, local $Tb$ theorems in the non-homogeneous case had only been proved assuming scale invariant ($L^{\infty}$ or BMO) testing conditions. The combination of non-scale-invariance and general measures is a delicate issue. In a previous paper we overcame this obstacle in the model case of square functions defined using general measures. In this paper we finally tackle the very demanding case of Calderón-Zygmund operators. That is, we prove a non-homogeneous local $Tb$ theorem with $L^2$ type testing conditions for all Calderón-Zygmund operators. In doing so we prove general twisted martingale transform inequalities which turn out to be subtle in our general framework.

On the Local $Tb$ Theorem: A Direct Proof under Duality Assumption

We give a direct proof of the local $Tb$ Theorem, in the Euclidean setting, and under the assumption of dual exponents. This Theorem provides a flexible framework for proving the boundedness of a Calderón-Zygmund operator, supposing the existence of systems of local accretive functions. We assume that the integrability exponents on these systems of functions are of the form $1/p+1/q\le 1$, and provide a direct proof. The principal point of interest is in the use of random grids and the corresponding construction of the corona. We also utilize certain twisted martingale transform inequalities.

Non-probabilistic proof of the A_2 theorem, and sharp weighted bounds for the q-variation of singular integrals

Any Calderon-Zygmund operator T is pointwise dominated by a convergent sum of positive dyadic operators. We give an elementary self-contained proof of this fact, which is simpler than the probabilistic arguments used for all previous results in this direction. Our argument also applies to the q-variation of certain Calderon-Zygmund operators, a stronger nonlinearity than the maximal truncations. As an application, we obtain new sharp weighted inequalities.

Pointwise convergence of vector-valued Fourier series

We prove a vector-valued version of Carleson's theorem: Let Y=[X,H]_t be a complex interpolation space between a UMD space X and a Hilbert space H. For p\in(1,\infty) and f\in L^p(T;Y), the partial sums of the Fourier series of f converge to f pointwise almost everywhere. Apparently, all known examples of UMD spaces are of this intermediate form Y=[X,H]_t. In particular, we answer affirmatively a question of Rubio de Francia on the pointwise convergence of Fourier series of Schatten class valued functions.

The Perfect Local $ Tb$ Theorem and Twisted Martingale Transforms

A local Tb Theorem provides a flexible framework for proving the boundedness of a Calderón-Zygmund operator T. One needs only boundedness of the operator T on systems of locally pseudo-accretive functions \{b_Q\}, indexed by cubes. We give a new proof of this Theorem in the setting of perfect (dyadic) models of Calderón-Zygmund operators, imposing integrability conditions on the b_Q functions that are the weakest possible. The proof is a simple direct argument, based upon a new inequality for transforms of so-called twisted martingale differences.

The Vector Valued Quartile Operator

Certain vector-valued inequalities are shown to hold for a Walsh analog of the bilinear Hilbert transform. These extensions are phrased in terms of a recent notion of quartile type of a UMD (Unconditional Martingale Differences) Banach space X. Every known UMD Banach space has finite quartile type, and it was recently shown that the Walsh analog of Carleson's Theorem holds under a closely related assumption of finite tile type. For a Walsh model of the bilinear Hilbert transform however, the quartile type should be sufficiently close to that of a Hilbert space for our results to hold. A full set of inequalities is quantified in terms of quartile type.

Weighted bounds for variational Walsh-Fourier series

For 1<p<infty, and weight w in A_p, and function f in L^p(w), we show that the r-variation of the Walsh-Fourier sums are finite, for r sufficiently large as function of w. (That r is a function of w is necessary.) This strengthens a result of Hunt-Young and is a weighted extension of a variation norm Carleson theorem of Oberlin-Seeger-Tao-Thiele-Wright. The proof uses phase plane analysis and a weighted extension of a variational inequality of Lepingle.

A Two Weight Inequality for the Hilbert transform Assuming an Energy Hypothesis

Subject to a range of side conditions, the two weight inequality for the Hilbert transform is characterized in terms of (1) a Poisson A_2 condition on the weights (2) A forward testing condition, in which the two weight inequality is tested on intervals (3) and a backwards testing condition, dual to (2). A critical new concept in the proof is an Energy Condition, which incorporates information about the distribution of the weights in question inside intervals. This condition is a consequence of the three conditions above. The Side Conditions are termed 'Energy Hypotheses'. At one endpoint they are necessary for the two weight inequality, and at the other, they are the Pivotal Conditions of Nazarov-Treil-Volberg. This new concept is combined with a known proof strategy devised by Nazarov-Treil-Volberg. A counterexample shows that the Pivotal Condition are not necessary for the two weight inequality.

On the Convergence of Lacunary Walsh-Fourier Series

We study the Walsh-Fourier series of S_{n_j}f, along a lacunary subsequence of integers {n_j}. Under a suitable integrability condition, we show that the sequence converges to f a.e. Integral condition is only slightly larger than what the sharp integrability condition would be, by a result of Konyagin. The condition is: f is in L loglog L (logloglog L). The method of proof uses four ingredients, (1) analysis on the Walsh Phase Plane, (2) the new multi-frequency Calderon-Zygmund Decomposition of Nazarov-Oberlin-Thiele, (3) a classical inequality of Zygmund, giving an improvement in the Hausdorff-Young inequality for lacunary subsequences of integers, and (4) the extrapolation method of Carro-Martin, which generalizes the work of Antonov and Arias-de-Reyna.

The Two Weight Inequality for Hilbert Transform, Coronas, and Energy Conditions

We consider the two weight problem for the Hilbert transform, namely the question of finding real-variable characterization of those pair of weights for which the Hilbert transform acts boundedly on $ L ^2 $ of the weights. Such a characterization is known subject to certain side conditions. We give a new proof, simpler in many details, of the best such result. In addition, we analyze underlying assumptions in the proof, especially in terms of two alternate side conditions. A new characterization in the case of one doubling weight is given.

Two Weight Inequalities for Maximal Truncations of Dyadic Calderón-Zygmund Operators

We consider L^p two weight inequalities for maximal truncations of dyadic Calderon-Zygmund operators. In the case of one weight being doubling, a characterization is given, and for the general case, sufficient conditions are given, including standard and non-standard testing conditions. The arguments of this paper parallel the authors prior work arXiv:0805.4711, but in this paper are much easier.

Weak and Strong type $ A_p$ Estimates for Calderón-Zygmund Operators

For a Calderon-Zygmund operator T on d-dimensional space, that has a sufficiently smooth kernel, we prove that for any 1< p \le 2, and weight w in A_p, that the maximal truncations T_* of T map L^p(w) to weak-L^p(w), with norm bounded by the A_p characteristic of w to the first power. This result combined with the (deep) recent result of Perez-Treil-Volberg, shows that the strong-type of T on L^2(w) is bounded by A_2 characteristic of w to the first power. (It is well-known that L^2 is the critical case for the strong type estimate.) Both results are sharp, aside from the number of derivatives imposed on the kernel of the operator. The proof uses the full structure theory of Calderon-Zygmund Operators, reduction to testing conditions, and a Corona argument.

Weak And Strong Type Estimates for Maximal Truncations of Calderón-Zygmund Operators on $ A_p$ Weighted Spaces

For 1<p< \infty, weight w \in A_p, and any L ^2 -bounded Calderón-Zygmund operator T, we show that there is a constant C(T,P) so that we prove the sharp norm dependence on T_#, the maximal truncations of T, in both weak and strong type L^p(w) norms. Namely, for the weak type norm, T_# maps L^p(w) to weak-L^p(w) with norm at most \|w\|_{A_p}. And for the strong type norm, the norm estimate is \|w\|_{A_p}^{\max(1, (p-1) ^{-1})}. These estimates are not improvable in the power of \lVert w\rVert_{A_p}. Our argument follows the outlines of the arguments of Lacey-Petermichl-Reguera (Math.\ Ann.\ 2010) and Hytönen-Pérez-Treil-Volberg (arXiv, 2010) with new ingredients, including a weak-type estimate for certain duals of T_#, and sufficient conditions for two weight inequalities in L ^{p} for T_#. Our proof does not rely upon extrapolation.

Weak and Strong-type estimates for Haar Shift Operators: Sharp power on the $A_p$ characteristic

As a corollary to our main result we deduce sharp A_p$ inequalities for T being either the Hilbert transform in dimension d=1, the Beurling transform in dimension d=2, or a Riesz transform in any dimension d\ge 2. For T_{\ast} the maximal truncations of these operators, we prove the sharp A_p weighted weak and strong-type L ^{p} (w) inequalities, for all 1<p<\infty. Key elements of the proof are (1) extrapolation (2) a recent argument for the A_2 bound in the untruncated case, an argument of Lacey-Petermichl-Reguera. (3) a weak-L^1 estimate for duals of maximal truncations. And (4) recent characterizations of the two-weight inequalities for strong and weak type inequalities, due to Lacey-Sawyer-Uriate-Tuero.

A Three Dimensional Signed Small Ball Inequality

The Small Ball Inequality is a conjectural lower bound on sums the L-infinity norm of sums of Haar functions supported on dyadic rectangles of a fixed volume in the unit cube. The conjecture is fundamental to questions in discrepancy theory, approximation theory and probability theory. In this article, we concentrate on a special case of the conjecture, and give the best known lower bound in dimension 3, using a conditional expectation argument.

Exponential Squared Integrability for the Discrepancy Function in Two Dimensions

Let A_N be an N-point distribution in the unit square in the Euclidean plane. We consider the Discrepancy function D_N(x) in two dimensions with respect to rectangles with lower left corner anchored at the origin and upper right corner at the point x. This is the difference between the actual number of points of A_N in such a rectangle and the expected number of points - N x_1x_2 - in the rectangle. We prove sharp estimates for the BMO norm and the exponential squared Orlicz norm of D_N(x). For example we show that necessarily ||D_N||_(expL^2) >c(logN)^(1/2) for some aboslute constant c>0. On the other hand we use a digit scrambled version of the van der Corput set to show that this bound is tight in the case N=2^n, for some positive integer n. These results unify the corresponding classical results of Roth and Schmidt in a sharp fashion.

Sharp $ A_2$ Inequality for Haar Shift Operators

As a corollary to our main theorem we give a new proof of the result that the norm of the Hilbert transform on L^2(w) has norm bounded by a the A_2 characteristic of a weight to the first power, a theorem of one of us. This new proof begins as the prior proofs do, by passing to Haar shifts. Then, we apply a deep two-weight T1 theorem of Nazarov-Treil-Volberg, to reduce the matter to checking a certain carleson measure condition. This condition is checked with a corona decomposition of the weight. Prior proofs of this type have used Bellman functions, while this proof is flexible enough to address all Haar shifts at the same time.
