Sum of squares I: scalar functions

This is the first in a series of three papers dealing with sums of squares and hypoellipticity in the infinite regime. We give a sharp sufficient condition on a smooth nonnegative function f on n-dimensional Euclidean space so that it can be written as a finite sum of squares of C^2,delta functions. Special consideration is given to analyzing the case when f vanishes only at the origin, answering a question of Bony et al.

A two weight inequality for Calderón-Zygmund operators on spaces of homogeneous type with applications

Let $(X,d,μ)$ be a space of homogeneous type in the sense of Coifman and Weiss, i.e. $d$ is a quasi metric on $X$ and $μ$ is a positive measure satisfying the doubling condition. Suppose that $u$ and $v$ are two locally finite positive Borel measures on $(X,d,μ)$. Subject to the pair of weights satisfying a side condition, we characterize the boundedness of a Calderón--Zygmund operator $T$ from $L^{2}(u)$ to $L^{2}(v)$ in terms of the $A_{2}$ condition and two testing conditions. For every cube $B\subset X$, we have the following testing conditions, with $\mathbf{1}_{B}$ taken as the indicator of $B$ \begin{equation*} \Vert T(u\mathbf{1}_{B})\Vert _{L^{2}(B, v)}\leq \mathcal{T}\Vert 1_{B}\Vert _{L^{2}(u)}, \end{equation*} \begin{equation*} \Vert T^{\ast }(v\mathbf{1}_{B})\Vert _{L^{2}(B, u)}\leq \mathcal{T}\Vert 1_{B}\Vert _{L^{2}(v)}. \end{equation*} The proof uses stopping cubes and corona decompositions originating in work of Nazarov, Treil and Volberg, along with the pivotal side condition.

Continuity of infinitely degenerate weak solutions via the trace method

In 1971 Fediĭ proved the remarkable theorem that the linear second order partial differential operator in the plane with coefficients 1 and f^2 is hypoelliptic provided that f is smooth, vanishes at the origin and is positive otherwise. Variants of this result, with hypoellipticity replaced by continuity of weak solutions, were recently given by the authors, together with Cristian Rios and Ruipeng Shen, to infinitely degenerate elliptic divergence form equations where the nonnegative matrix A(x,u) has bounded measurable coefficients with trace roughly 1 and determinant comparable to f, and where F=ln(1/f) is essentially doubling. However, in the plane, these variants assumed additional geometric constraints on f, something not required in Fediĭ's theorem. In this paper we in particular remove these additional geometric constraints in the plane for homogeneous equations with F essentially doubling.

A Good-Lambda Lemma, two weight T1 theorems without weak boundedness, and a two weight accretive global Tb theorem

The weak boundedness property associated with a standard alpha-fractional Calderon-Zygmund operator and a weight pair is good-lambda controlled by the testing conditions and the Muckenhoupt and energy side conditions. As a consequence, assuming the side conditions, we can eliminate the weak boundedness property from Theorem 1 of arXiv:1603.04332v2 to obtain that T is bounded if and only if the testing conditions hold for T and its dual (an earlier instance of this type of conclusion appears in Lacey and Wick arXiv:1312.6163v3). As a corollary we give a simple derivation of a two weight accretive global Tb theorem from a related T1 theorem. The role of two different parameterizations of the family of dyadic grids, by scale and by translation, is highlighted in simultaneously exploiting both goodness and NTV surgery with families of grids that are common to both measures.

A two weight fractional singular integral theorem with side conditions, energy and k-energy dispersed

This paper is a sequel to our paper Rev. Mat. Iberoam. 32 (2016), no. 1, 79-174. Let T be a standard fractional Calderon Zygmund operator. Assume appropriate Muckenhoupt and quasienergy side conditions. Then we show that T is bounded from one weighted space to another if the quasicube testing conditions hold for T and its dual, and if the quasiweak boundedness property holds for T. Conversely, if T is bounded, then the quasitesting conditions hold, and the quasiweak boundedness condition holds. If the vector of fractional Riesz transforms (or more generally a strongly elliptic vector of transforms) is bounded, then the appropriate Muckenhoupt conditions hold. We do not know if our quasienergy conditions are necessary in higher dimensions, except for certain situations in which one of the measures is one-dimensional as in arXiv:1310.4820 and arXiv:1505.07822v4, and for certain side conditions placed on the measures such as doubling and k-energy dispersed, which when k=n-1 is similar to the condition of uniformly full dimension in Lacey and Wick arXiv:1312.6163v3.

The two weight T1 theorem for fractional Riesz transforms when one measure is supported on a curve

Using our T1 theorem with an energy side condition allowing common point masses, we extend our previous work in arXiv:1310.4484v3 on one measure supported on a line, to include regular C(1,delta) curves and to permit common point masses. In the special case of the Cauchy transform with one measure supported on the circle, this gives a slightly different conclusion than that in arXiv:1310.4820v4.

A geometric condition, necessity of energy, and two weight boundedness of fractional Riesz transforms

We prove that the energy conditions in arXiv:1302.5093v7 are implied by the fractional A2 conditions and testing conditions for the vector of fractional Riesz transforms when one measure is supported on a line. Then we apply the main theorem in arXiv:1302.5093v7 to obtain a T1 theorem for the fractional Riesz transforms when one weight is supported on a line.

A two weight theorem for fractional singular integrals in higher dimension

We prove a two weight theorem for alpha-fractional singular integrals in higher dimensions, assuming energy side conditions. We also show that reversal of the Energy Lemma fails for the vector Riesz transforms in the plane, as well as other collections of convolution Calderon-Zygmund operators in the plane, and when alpha = 1, even for the infinite vector of all classical 1-fractional Calderon-Zygmund operators.

The Krzyż conjecture revisited

The Krzyż conjecture concerns the largest values of the Taylor coefficients of a non-vanishing analytic function bounded by one in modulus in the unit disk. It has been open since 1968 even though information on the structure of extremal functions is available. The purpose of this paper is to collect various conditions that the coefficients of an extremal function (and various other quantities associated with it) should satisfy if the conjecture is true and to show that each one of these properties is equivalent to the conjecture itself. This may provide several possible starting points for future attempts at solving the problem.

The Linear Bound for Haar Multiplier Paraproducts

We study the natural resolution of the conjugated Haar multiplier $M_{w^{\frac{1}{2}}}T_σM_{w^{-\frac{1}{2}}},$ where the multiplication operators $M_{w^{\pm\frac{1}{2}}}$ are decomposed into their canonical paraproduct decompositions. We prove that each constituent operator obtained from this resolution has a linear bound on $L^2(\mathbb{R}^d;w)$ in terms of the $A_{2}$ characteristic of $w$. The main tools used are a product formula for Haar coefficients, the Carleson Embedding Theorem, the linear bound for the square function, and the well-known linear bound of $T_σ$ on $L^2(\mathbb{R}^d,w).$

The Linear Bound for the Natural Weighted Resolution of the Haar Shift

The Hilbert transform has a linear bound in the $A_{2}$ characteristic on weighted $L^{2}$, \begin{equation*} \left\Vert H\right\Vert _{L^{2}(w)\rightarrow L^{2}(w)}\lesssim \left[ w \right] _{A_{2}}, \end{equation*} and we extend this linear bound to the nine constituent operators in the natural weighted resolution of the conjugation $M_{w^{\frac{1}{2}}}\mathcal{S }M_{w^{-\frac{1}{2}}}$ induced by the canonical decomposition of a multiplier into paraproducts:% \begin{equation*} M_{f}=P_{f}^{-}+P_{f}^{0}+P_{f}^{+}. \end{equation*} The main tools used are composition of paraproducts, a product formula for Haar coefficients, the Carleson Embedding Theorem, and the linear bound for the square function.

Two Weight Inequality for the Hilbert Transform: A Real Variable Characterization, I

The two weight inequality for the Hilbert transform arises in the settings of analytic function spaces, operator theory, and spectral theory, and what would be most useful is a characterization in the simplest real-variable terms. We show that the $L^2$ to $L^2$ inequality holds if and only if two L^2 to weak-L^2 inequalities hold. This is a corollary to a characterization in terms of a two-weight Poisson inequality, and a pair of testing inequalities on bounded functions.

A Two Weight Inequality for the Hilbert transform Assuming an Energy Hypothesis

Subject to a range of side conditions, the two weight inequality for the Hilbert transform is characterized in terms of (1) a Poisson A_2 condition on the weights (2) A forward testing condition, in which the two weight inequality is tested on intervals (3) and a backwards testing condition, dual to (2). A critical new concept in the proof is an Energy Condition, which incorporates information about the distribution of the weights in question inside intervals. This condition is a consequence of the three conditions above. The Side Conditions are termed 'Energy Hypotheses'. At one endpoint they are necessary for the two weight inequality, and at the other, they are the Pivotal Conditions of Nazarov-Treil-Volberg. This new concept is combined with a known proof strategy devised by Nazarov-Treil-Volberg. A counterexample shows that the Pivotal Condition are not necessary for the two weight inequality.

The Two Weight Inequality for Hilbert Transform, Coronas, and Energy Conditions

We consider the two weight problem for the Hilbert transform, namely the question of finding real-variable characterization of those pair of weights for which the Hilbert transform acts boundedly on $ L ^2 $ of the weights. Such a characterization is known subject to certain side conditions. We give a new proof, simpler in many details, of the best such result. In addition, we analyze underlying assumptions in the proof, especially in terms of two alternate side conditions. A new characterization in the case of one doubling weight is given.

Two Weight Inequalities for Maximal Truncations of Dyadic Calderón-Zygmund Operators

We consider L^p two weight inequalities for maximal truncations of dyadic Calderon-Zygmund operators. In the case of one weight being doubling, a characterization is given, and for the general case, sufficient conditions are given, including standard and non-standard testing conditions. The arguments of this paper parallel the authors prior work arXiv:0805.4711, but in this paper are much easier.

Weak and Strong type $ A_p$ Estimates for Calderón-Zygmund Operators

For a Calderon-Zygmund operator T on d-dimensional space, that has a sufficiently smooth kernel, we prove that for any 1< p \le 2, and weight w in A_p, that the maximal truncations T_* of T map L^p(w) to weak-L^p(w), with norm bounded by the A_p characteristic of w to the first power. This result combined with the (deep) recent result of Perez-Treil-Volberg, shows that the strong-type of T on L^2(w) is bounded by A_2 characteristic of w to the first power. (It is well-known that L^2 is the critical case for the strong type estimate.) Both results are sharp, aside from the number of derivatives imposed on the kernel of the operator. The proof uses the full structure theory of Calderon-Zygmund Operators, reduction to testing conditions, and a Corona argument.

Weak And Strong Type Estimates for Maximal Truncations of Calderón-Zygmund Operators on $ A_p$ Weighted Spaces

For 1<p< \infty, weight w \in A_p, and any L ^2 -bounded Calderón-Zygmund operator T, we show that there is a constant C(T,P) so that we prove the sharp norm dependence on T_#, the maximal truncations of T, in both weak and strong type L^p(w) norms. Namely, for the weak type norm, T_# maps L^p(w) to weak-L^p(w) with norm at most \|w\|_{A_p}. And for the strong type norm, the norm estimate is \|w\|_{A_p}^{\max(1, (p-1) ^{-1})}. These estimates are not improvable in the power of \lVert w\rVert_{A_p}. Our argument follows the outlines of the arguments of Lacey-Petermichl-Reguera (Math.\ Ann.\ 2010) and Hytönen-Pérez-Treil-Volberg (arXiv, 2010) with new ingredients, including a weak-type estimate for certain duals of T_#, and sufficient conditions for two weight inequalities in L ^{p} for T_#. Our proof does not rely upon extrapolation.

Astala's Conjecture on Distortion of Hausdorff Measures under Quasiconformal Maps in the Plane

Let E be a compact set in the plane, g be a K-quasiconformal map, and let 0<t<2. Then H^t (E) = 0 implies H^{t'} (g E) = 0, for t'=[2Kt]/[2+(K-1)t]. This is a refinement of a set of inequalities on the distortion of Hausdorff dimensions by quasiconformal maps proved by K. Astala in his celebrated paper on area distortion for quasiconformal maps and answers in the positive a Conjecture of K. Astala in op. cit.

BMO Estimates for the $H^{\infty}(\mathbb{B}_n)$ Corona Problem

We study the $H^{\infty}(\mathbb{B}_{n})$ Corona problem $\sum_{j=1}^{N}f_{j}g_{j}=h$ and show it is always possible to find solutions $f$ that belong to $BMOA(\mathbb{B}_{n})$ for any $n>1$, including infinitely many generators $N$. This theorem improves upon both a 2000 result of Andersson and Carlsson and the classical 1977 result of Varopoulos. The former result obtains solutions for strictly pseudoconvex domains in the larger space $H^{\infty}\cdot BMOA$ with $N=\infty $, while the latter result obtains $BMOA(\mathbb{B}_{n})$ solutions for just N=2 generators with $h=1$. Our method of proof is to solve $\overline{\partial}$-problems and to exploit the connection between $BMO$ functions and Carleson measures for $H^{2}(\mathbb{B}_{n})$. Key to this is the exact structure of the kernels that solve the $\overline{\partial}$ equation for $(0,q)$ forms, as well as new estimates for iterates of these operators. A generalization to multiplier algebras of Besov-Sobolev spaces is also given.

The Corona Theorem for the Drury-Arveson Hardy space and other holomorphic Besov-Sobolev spaces on the unit ball in $\mathbb{C}^{n}$

We prove that the multiplier algebra of the Drury-Arveson Hardy space $H_{n}^{2}$ on the unit ball in $\mathbb{C}^{n}$ has no corona in its maximal ideal space, thus generalizing the famous Corona Theorem of L. Carleson to higher dimensions. This result is obtained as a corollary of the Toeplitz corona theorem and a new Banach space result: the Besov-Sobolev space $B_{p}^σ$ has the "baby corona property" for all $σ\geq 0$ and $1<p<\infty $. In addition we obtain infinite generator and semi-infinite matrix versions of these theorems.
