Causality-Aware Neighborhood Methods for Recommender Systems

The business objectives of recommenders, such as increasing sales, are aligned with the causal effect of recommendations. Previous recommenders targeting for the causal effect employ the inverse propensity scoring (IPS) in causal inference. However, IPS is prone to suffer from high variance. The matching estimator is another representative method in causal inference field. It does not use propensity and hence free from the above variance problem. In this work, we unify traditional neighborhood recommendation methods with the matching estimator, and develop robust ranking methods for the causal effect of recommendations. Our experiments demonstrate that the proposed methods outperform various baselines in ranking metrics for the causal effect. The results suggest that the proposed methods can achieve more sales and user engagement than previous recommenders.

Large photogalvanic spin current by magnetic resonance in bilayer Cr trihalides

Magnetic materials show rich optical responses related to the magnetic order. These phenomena reflect the nature of their excitations, providing a powerful probe for the magnetic states and a way to control them. In recent years, such studies were extended to the optical control of spin current using nonlinear optical response similar to the photogalvanic effect. However, neither a candidate material nor a general formula for calculating the photogalvanic spin current is known so far. In this work, we develop a general theory for the photogalvanic spin current through a magnetic resonance process. Using the nonlinear response formalism, we find the nonlinear conductivity consists of two contributions that involve one and two magnon bands; the latter is a contribution unknown to date. We argue that the two-band process produces a large photogalvanic spin current in the antiferromagnetic phase of bilayer CrI$_3$ and CrBr$_3$, whose resonance frequency can be tuned between GHz-THz range by an external magnetic field. Our findings open a route to the studies on the photogalvanic effect of spin angular momentum in realistic setups.

General description for nonequilibrium steady states in periodically driven dissipative quantum systems

Laser technology has developed and accelerated photo-induced nonequilibrium physics from both scientific and engineering viewpoints. The Floquet engineering, i.e., controlling material properties and functionalities by time-periodic drives, is a forefront of quantum physics of light-matter interaction, but limited to ideal dissipationless systems. For the Floquet engineering extended to a variety of materials, it is vital to understand the quantum states emerging in a balance of the periodic drive and energy dissipation. Here we derive the general description for nonequilibrium steady states (NESS) in periodically driven dissipative systems by focusing on the systems under high-frequency drive and time-independent Lindblad-type dissipation with the detailed balance condition. Our formula correctly describes the time-average, fluctuation, and symmetry property of the NESS, and can be computed efficiently in numerical calculations. Our approach will play fundamental roles in Floquet engineering in a broad class of dissipative quantum systems such as atoms and molecules, mesoscopic systems, and condensed matter.

High-harmonic generation by electric polarization, spin current, and magnetization

High-harmonic generation (HHG), a typical nonlinear optical effect, has been actively studied in electron systems such as semiconductors and superconductors. As a natural extension, we theoretically study HHG from electric polarization, spin current and magnetization in magnetic insulators under terahertz (THz) or gigahertz (GHz) electromagnetic waves. We use simple one-dimensional spin chain models with or without multiferroic coupling between spins and the electric polarization, and study the dynamics of the spin chain coupled to an external ac electric or magnetic field. We map spin chains to two-band fermions and invoke an analogy of semiconductors and superconductors. With a quantum master equation and Lindblad approximation, we compute the time evolution of the electric polarization, spin current, and magnetization, showing that they exhibit clear harmonic peaks. We also show that the even-order HHG by magnetization dynamics can be controlled by static magnetic fields in a wide class of magnetic insulators. We propose experimental setups to observe these HHG, and estimate the required strength of the ac electric field $E_0$ for detection as $E_0\sim100$kV/cm--1MV/cm, which corresponds to the magnetic field $B_0\sim0.1$T--1T. The estimated strength would be relevant also for experimental realizations of other theoretically-proposed nonlinear optical effects in magnetic insulators such as Floquet engineering of magnets.

Two-photon driven magnon-pair resonance as a signature of spin-nematic order

We theoretically study the nonlinear magnetic resonance driven by intense laser or electromagnetic wave in a fully polarized frustrated magnet near a less-visible spin-nematic ordered phase. In general, both magnons and magnon pairs (two-magnon bound state) appear as the low-energy excitation in the saturated state of spin-nematic magnets. Their excitation energies are usually in terahertz (THz) or gigahertz range. Magnon pairs with angular momentum 2$\hbar$ can be excited by the simultaneous absorption of two photons, and such multi-photon processes occur if the applied THz laser is strong enough. We compute laser-driven magnetic dynamics of a frustrated four-spin system with both magnon ($\hbar$) and magnon-pair (2$\hbar$) like excitations which is analogous to a macroscopic frustrated magnet with a spin nematic phase. We estimate the required strength of magnetic field of laser for the realization of two photon absorption, taking into account dissipation effects with the Lindblad equation. We show that intense THz laser with ac magnetic field of 0.1-1.0 Tesla is enough to observe magnon-pair resonance.

Laser-Driven Multiferroics and Ultrafast Spin Current Generation

We propose an ultrafast way to generate spin chirality and spin current in a class of multiferroic magnets using a terahertz circularly polarized laser. Using the Floquet formalism for periodically driven systems, we show that it is possible to dynamically control the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in materials with magnetoelectric coupling. This is supported by numerical calculations, by which additional resonant phenomena are found. Specifically, when a static magnetic field is applied in addition to the circularly polarized laser, a large resonant enhancement of spin chirality is observed resembling the electron spin resonance. Spin current is generated when the laser is spatially modulated by chiral plasmonic structures and could be detected using optospintronic devices.

Observation of spin current in quantum spin liquid

Spin liquid is a state of electron spins in which quantum fluctuation breaks magnetic ordering while maintaining spin correlation. It has been a central topic in magnetism because of its relevance to high-Tc superconductivity and topological states. However, utilizing spin liquid has been quite difficult. Typical spin liquid states are realized in one-dimensional spin systems, called quantum spin chains. Here, we show that a spin liquid in a spin-1/2 quantum chain generates and carries spin current via its long-range spin fluctuation. This is demonstrated by observing an anisotropic negative spin Seebeck effect along the spin chains in Sr2CuO3. The results show that spin current can flow even in an atomic channel owing the spin liquid state, which can be used for atomic spin-current wiring.

An Intuitionistic Set-theoretical Model of the Extended Calculus of Constructions

Werner's set-theoretical model is one of the most intuitive models of ECC. It combines a functional view of predicative universes with a collapsed view of the impredicative sort Prop. However this model of Prop is so coarse that the principle of excluded middle holds. In this paper, we interpret Prop into a topological space (a special case of Heyting algebra) to make it more intuitionistic without sacrificing simplicity. We prove soundness and show some applications of our model.

Electron Spin Resonance in Quasi-One-Dimensional Quantum Antiferromagnets: Relevance of Weak Interchain Interactions

We discuss universal features on the electron spin resonance (ESR) of a temperature-induced Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid phase in a wide class of weakly coupled $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic spin chains such as spin ladders, spin tubes and three-dimensionally coupled spin chains. We show that the ESR linewidth of various coupled chains increases with lowering temperature while the linewidth of a single spin chain is typically proportional to temperature. This broadening with lowering temperature is attributed to anisotropic interchain interactions and has been indeed observed in several kinds of three-dimensional (3D) magnets of weakly coupled spin chains above the 3D ordering temperature. We demonstrate that our theory can account for anomalous behaviors of the linewidths in an $S=1/2$ four-leg spin tube compound Cu$_2$Cl$_4 \cdot $H$_8$C$_4$SO$_2$ (abbreviated to Sul-Cu$_2$Cl$_4$) and a three-dimensionally coupled $S=1/2$ spin chain compound CuCl$_2\cdot 2$NC$_5$H$_5$.

Unavoidable Gapless Boundary State and Boundary Superfluidity of Trapped Bose Mott States in Two-Dimensional Optical Lattices

We study the boundary nature of trapped bosonic Mott insulators in optical square lattices, by performing quantum Monte Carlo simulation. We show that a finite superfluid density generally emerges in the incommensurate-filling (IC) boundary region around the bulk Mott state, irrespectively of the width of the IC region. Both off-diagonal and density correlation functions in the IC boundary region exhibit a nearly power-law decay. The power-law behavior and superfluidity are well developed below a characteristic temperature. These results indicate that a gapless boundary mode always emerges in any atomic Mott insulators on optical lattices. This further implies that if we consider a topological insulating state in Bose or Fermi atomic systems, its boundary possesses at least two gapless modes (or coupled modes) of an above IC edge state and the intrinsic topologically-protected edge state.

Floquet Majorana Edge Mode and Non-Abelian Anyons in a Driven Kitaev Model

We theoretically study laser driven nonequilibrium states in the Kitaev honeycomb model with a magnetoelectric cross coupling. We show that a topological spin liquid with a gapless chiral edge mode emerges when we apply an elliptically or circularly polarized laser. This is a strongly correlated quantum spin version of the Floquet topological insulator. In the topological phase, the edge mode is made from Majorana fermions and the bulk has gapped non-Abelian anyon excitations.

Laser-induced magnetization curve

We propose an all optical ultrafast method to highly magnetize general quantum magnets using a circularly polarized terahertz laser. The key idea is to utilize a circularly polarized laser and its chirping. Through this method, one can obtain magnetization curves of a broad class of quantum magnets as a function of time even without any static magnetic field. We numerically demonstrate the laser-induced magnetization process in realistic quantum spin models and find a condition for the realization. The onset of magnetization can be described by a many-body version of Landau-Zener mechanism. In a particular model, we show that a plateau state with topological properties can be realized dynamically.

Quasi Long Range Order of Defects in Frustrated Antiferromagnetic Ising Models on Spatially Anisotropic Triangular Lattices

It is known that there is no phase transition down to zero temperature in the antiferromagnetic Ising model on spatially anisotropic triangular lattices, in which the exchange coupling of one direction is stronger than those of other two directions. In the model, the low-temperature physics is governed by domain-wall excitations (defects) residing on bonds of the strong-coupling direction. In this letter, we show that an additional small attractive interaction between defects (a ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interaction in the weak-coupling direction) leads to a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition at a finite temperature, by performing the Monte Carlo simulation. The BKT phase can be viewed as the phase with a quasi long-range order of defects. We determine the phase diagram in a wide parameter regime and argue the phase structure from statistical-mechanics and field-theory viewpoints.

Spin-Nematic and Spin-Density-Wave Orders in Spatially Anisotropic Frustrated Magnets in a Magnetic Field

We develop a microscopic theory of finite-temperature spin-nematic orderings in three-dimensional spatially anisotropic magnets consisting of weakly-coupled frustrated spin-1/2 chains with nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor couplings in a magnetic field. Combining a field theoretical technique with density-matrix renormalization group results, we complete finite-temperature phase diagrams in a wide magnetic-field range that possess spin-bond-nematic and incommensurate spin-density-wave ordered phases. The effects of a four-spin interaction are also studied. The relevance of our results to quasi-one-dimensional edge-shared cuprate magnets such as LiCuVO4 is discussed.

Gapless edge states and their stability in two-dimensional quantum magnets

We study the nature of edge states in extrinsically and spontaneously dimerized states of two-dimensional spin-1/2 antiferromagnets, by performing quantum Monte Carlo simulation. We show that a gapless edge mode emerges in the wide region of the dimerized phases, and the critical exponent of spin correlators along the edge deviates from the value of Tomonaga-Luttinger (TL) liquid universality in large but finite systems at low temperatures. We also demonstrate that the gapless nature at edges is stable against several perturbations such as external magnetic field, easy-plane XXZ anisotropy, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, and further-neighbor exchange interactions. The edge states exhibit non TL-liquid behavior, depending strongly on model parameters and kinds of perturbations. Possible ways of detecting these edge states are discussed. Properties of edge states we show in this paper could also be used as reference points to study other edge states of more exotic gapped magnetic phases such as spin liquids.

Ground-state phase diagram of a spin-1/2 frustrated ferromagnetic XXZ chain: Haldane dimer phase and gapped/gapless chiral phases

The ground-state phase diagram of a spin-1/2 XXZ chain with competing ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor (J_1<0) and antiferromagnetic second-neighbor (J_2>0) exchange couplings is studied by means of the infinite time evolving block decimation algorithm and effective field theories. For the SU(2)-symmetric (Heisenberg) case, we show that the nonmagnetic phase in the range -4<J_1/J_2<0 has a small but finite ferromagnetic dimer order. We argue that this spontaneous dimer order is associated with effective spin-1 degrees of freedom on dimerized bonds, which collectively form a valence bond solid state as in the spin-1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain (the Haldane spin chain). We thus call this phase the Haldane dimer phase. With easy-plane anisotropy, the model exhibits a variety of phases including the vector chiral phase with gapless excitations and the even-parity dimer and Neel phases with gapped excitations, in addition to the Haldane dimer phase. Furthermore, we show the existence of gapped phases with coexisting orders in narrow regions that intervene between the gapless chiral phase and any one of Haldane dimer, even-parity dimer, and Neel phases. Possible implications for quasi-one-dimensional edge-sharing cuprates are discussed.

Spin-Chirality Separation and S_3-Symmetry Breakings in the Magnetization Plateau of the Quantum Spin Tube

We study the magnetization plateau state of the three-leg spin-1/2 tube in the strong rung coupling region, where S_3-symmetry breakings and low-energy chirality degree of freedom play crucial roles. On the basis of the effective chirality model and density matrix renormalization group, we clarify that, as the leg coupling increases, the chirality liquid with gapless non-magnetic excitations, the spin imbalance phase and the vector-spin-chirality ordered phase emerge without closing the plateau spin gap. The relevance of these results to experiments is also discussed.

Theory of Raman Scattering in One-Dimensional Quantum Spin-1/2 Antiferromagnets

We study theoretically the Raman scattering spectra in the one-dimensional (1D) quantum spin-1/2 antiferromagnets. The analysis reveals that their low-energy dynamics is exquisitely sensitive to various perturbations to the Heisenberg chain with nearest-neighbor exchange interactions, such as magnetic anisotropy, longer-range exchange interactions, and bond dimerization. These weak interactions are mainly responsible for the Raman scattering and give rise to different types of spectra as functions of frequency, temperature, and external field. In contrast to the Raman spectra in higher dimensions in which the two-magnon process is dominant, those in 1D antiferromagnets provide much richer information on these perturbations.

Competing phases in spin-1/2 J1-J2 chain with easy-plane anisotropy

We summarize our theoretical findings on the ground-state phase diagram of the spin-1/2 XXZ chain having competing nearest-neighbor (J1) and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor (J2) couplings. Our study is mainly concerned with the case of ferromagnetic J1, and the case of antiferromagnetic J1 is briefly reviewed for comparison. The phase diagram contains a rich variety of phases in the plane of J1/J2 versus the XXZ anisotropy Delta: vector-chiral phases, Néel phases, several dimer phases, and Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid phases. We discuss the vector-chiral order that appears for a remarkably wide parameter space, successive Néel-dimer phase transitions, and an emergent nonlocal string order in a narrow region of ferromagnetic J1 side.

NMR relaxation rate in the field-induced octupolar liquid phase of spin-1/2 J1-J2 frustrated chains

In the spin-1/2 frustrated chain with nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic exchange J1 and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic exchange J2 under magnetic field, magnetic multipolar-liquid (quadrupolar, octupolar, and hexadecapolar) phases are widely expanded from the saturation down to a low-field regime. Recently, we have clarified characteristic temperature and field dependence of the NMR relaxation rate 1/T_1 in the quadrupolar phase. In this paper, we examine those of 1/T_1 in the octupolar phase combining field theoretical method with numerical data. The relevance of the results to quasi one-dimensional J1-J2 magnets such as PbCuSO4(OH)2, Rb2Cu2Mo3O12 and Li2ZrCuO4 is shortly discussed.

Chiral order and electromagnetic dynamics in one-dimensional multiferroic cuprates

We show by unbiased numerical calculations that the ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor exchange interaction stabilizes a vector spin chiral order against the quantum fluctuation in a frustrated spin-1/2 chain relevant to multiferroic cuprates, LiCu2O2 and LiCuVO4. Our realistic semi-classical analyses for LiCu2O2 resolve controversies on the helical magnetic structure and unveil the pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone modes as the origin of experimentally observed electromagnons.

Coefficients of bosonized dimer operators in spin-1/2 XXZ chains and their applications

Comparing numerically evaluated excitation gaps of dimerized spin-1/2 XXZ chains with the gap formula for the low-energy effective sine-Gordon theory, we determine coefficients d_xy and d_z of bosonized dimerization operators in spin-1/2 XXZ chains, which are defined as (-1)j(S^x_j S^x_j+1 +S^y_j S^y_j+1) = d_xy sin(\sqrt{4pi}phi(x))+ ... and (-1)^j S^z_j S^z_j+1 = d_z sin(sqrt{4pi}phi(x)) + .... We also calculate the coefficients of both spin and dimer operators for the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain with a nearest-neighbor coupling J and a next-nearest-neighbor coupling J2 = 0.2411J. As applications of these coefficients, we present ground-state phase diagrams of dimerized spin chains in a magnetic field and antiferromagnetic spin ladders with a four-spin interaction. The optical conductivity and electric polarization of one-dimensional Mott insulators with Peierls instability are also evaluated quantitatively.

Quantum spin nanotubes -- frustration, competing orders and criticalities

Recent developments of theoretical studies on spin nanotubes are reviewed, especially focusing on the $S=1/2$ three-leg spin tube. In contrast to the three-leg spin ladder, the tube has a spin gap in case of the regular-triangle unit cellwhen the rung interaction is sufficiently large. The effective theory based on the Hubbard Hamiltonian indicates a quantum phase transition to the gapless spin liquid due to the lattice distortion to an isosceles triangle. This is also supported by the numerical diagonalization and the density matrix renormalization group analyses. Furthermore, combining analytical and numerical approaches, we reveal several novel magnetic-field-induced phenomena: Néel, dimer, chiral and/or inhomogeneous orders, new mechanism for the magnetization plateau formation, and others. The recently synthesized spin tube materials are also briefly introduced.

Spontaneous population imbalance in two-component Bose and Fermi gases

We study two-component (or pseudo-spin-1/2) Bose or Fermi gases in one dimension, in which particles are convertible between the components. Through bosonization and numerical analyses of a simple lattice model, we demonstrate that, in such gases, a strong intercomponent repulsion induces spontaneous population imbalance between the components, namely, the ferromagnetism of the pseudo spins. The imbalanced phase contains gapless charge excitations characterized as a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid and gapped spin excitations. We uncover a crucial effect of the intercomponent particle hopping on the transition to the imbalanced phase. In the absence of this hopping, the transition is of first order. At the transition point, the energy spectrum reveals certain degeneracy indicative of an emergent SU(2) symmetry. With an infinitesimal intercomponent hopping, the transition becomes of Ising type. We determine the phase diagram of the model accurately and test the reliability of the weak-coupling bosonization formalism.

Unconventional Neel and dimer orders in a spin-1/2 frustrated ferromagnetic chain with easy-plane anisotropy

We study the ground-state phase diagram of a one-dimensional spin-1/2 easy-plane XXZ model with a ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor (NN) coupling $J_1$ and a competing next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) antiferromagnetic coupling $J_2$ in the parameter range $0<J_2/|J_1|<0.4$. When $J_2/|J_1|\lesssim1/4$, the model is in a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid phase which is adiabatically connected to the critical phase of the XXZ model of $J_2=0$. On the basis of the effective (sine-Gordon) theory and numerical analyses of low-lying energy levels of finite-size systems, we show that the NNN coupling induces phase transitions from the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid to gapped phases with either Neel or dimer order. Interestingly, these two types of ordered phases appear alternately as the easy-plane anisotropy is changed towards the isotropic limit. The appearance of the antiferromagnetic (Neel) order in this model is remarkable, as it is strongly unfavored by both the easy-plane ferromagnetic NN coupling and antiferromagnetic NNN coupling in the classical-spin picture. We argue that emergent trimer degrees of freedom play a crucial role in the formation of the Neel order.

Four-spin-exchange- and magnetic-field-induced chiral order in two-leg spin ladders

We propose a mechanism of a vector chiral long-range order in two-leg spin-1/2 and spin-1 antiferromagnetic ladders with four-spin exchanges and a Zeeman term. It is known that for one-dimensional quantum systems, spontaneous breakdown of continuous symmetries is generally forbidden. Any vector chiral order hence does not appear in spin-rotationally [SU(2)]-symmetric spin ladders. However, if a magnetic field is added along the S^z axis of ladders and the SU(2) symmetry is reduced to the U(1) one, the z component of a vector chiral order can emerge with the remaining U(1) symmetry unbroken. Making use of Abelian bosonization techniques, we actually show that a certain type of four-spin exchange can yield a vector chiral long-range order in spin-1/2 and spin-1 ladders under a magnetic field. In the chiral-ordered phase, the Z_2 interchain-parity (i.e., chain-exchange) symmetry is spontaneously broken. We also consider effects of perturbations breaking the parity symmetry.

Magnon bands of N-leg integer-spin antiferromagnetic systems in the weak interchain-coupling regime

Using the exact results of the O(3) nonlinear sigma model (NLSM) and a few quantitative numerical data for integer-spin antiferromagnetic (AF) chains, we systematically estimate all magnon excitation energies of N-leg integer-spin AF ladders and tubes in the weak-interchain-coupling regime. Our method is based on a first-order perturbation theory for the strength of the interchain coupling. It can deal with any kind of interchain interactions, in principle. We confirm that results of the perturbation theory are in good agreement with those of a quantum Monte Carlo simulation and with our recent study based on a saddle-point approximation of the NLSM [Phys. Rev. B 72, 104438 (2005)]. Our theory further supports the existence of a Haldane (gapped) phase even in a d-dimensional (d\geq 2) spatially anisotropic integer-spin AF model, if the exchange coupling in one direction is sufficiently strong compared with those in all the other directions. The strategy in this paper is applicable to other N-leg systems consisting of gapped chains which low-energy physics is exactly or quantitatively known.

Vector chirality and inhomogeneous magnetization in frustrated spin tubes in high magnetic fields

The low-energy physics of three-leg frustrated antiferromagnetic spin-S tubes in the vicinity of the upper critical field are studied. Utilizing the effective field theory based on the spin-wave approximation, we argue that in the intermediate-interchain-coupling regime, the ground state exhibits a vector chiral order or an inhomogeneous magnetization for the interchain (rung) direction and the low-energy excitations are described by a one-component Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL). In both chiral and inhomogeneous phases, the Z_2 parity symmetry along the rung direction is spontaneously broken. It is also predicted that a two-component TLL appears and all the symmetries are restored in the strong-rung-coupling case.

Anomalous magnetization process in frustrated spin ladders

We study, at T=0, the anomalies in the magnetization curve of the S=1 two-leg ladder with frustrated interactions. We focus mainly on the existence of the $M=\Ms/2$ plateau, where $\Ms$ is the saturation magnetization. We use analytical methods (degenerate perturbation theory and non-Abelian bosonization) as well as numerical methods (level spectroscopy and density matrix renormalization group), which lead to the consistent conclusion with each other. We also touch on the $M=\Ms/4$ and $M=(3/4)\Ms$ plateaux and cusps.
