Field-Induced Quantum Spin Nematic Liquid Phase in the S=1 Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Chain with Additional Interactions

The magnetization process of the $S=1$ antiferromagnetic chain with the single-ion anisotropy $D$ and the biquadratic interaction is investigated using the numerical diagonalization. Both interactions stabilize the 2-magnon Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) phase in the magnetization process. Based on several excitation gaps calculated by the numerical diagonalization, some phase diagrams of the magnetization process are presented. These phase diagrams reveal that the spin nematic dominant TLL phase appears at higher magnetizations for sufficiently large negative $D$.

Field-induced spin nematic Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid of the $S=1/2$ spin ladder system with the anisotropic ferromagnetic rung interaction

The $S=1/2$ quantum spin ladder system with the anisotropic ferromagnetic exchange interaction on the rung under magnetic field is investigated using the numerical diagonalization and the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) analyses. It is found that the nematic-spin-correlation-dominant Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) appears in some high magnetic field. It is included in the TLL phase where the two-magnon bound state is realized. For some suitable parameters, after the field-induced phase transition from this two-magnon-bound TLL phase to the single-magnon TLL one, the re-entrant transition to the two-magnon-bound TLL phase occurs, which is confirmed by the magnetization curves by the DMRG. Several phase diagrams on the plane of the coupling anisotropy versus the magnetization and the magnetic field are presented. The present result is a proposal of the candidate system which exhibits the spin nematic phase without the biquadratic interaction or the frustration.

Magnetization Plateau of the Distorted Diamond Spin Chain with Anisotropic Ferromagnetic Interaction

The $S=1/2$ distorted diamond spin chain with the anisotropic ferromagnetic interaction is investigated using the numerical diagonalization and the level spectroscopy analysis. It is known that the system exhibits a plateau of the magnetization curve at the 1/3 of the saturation. The present study indicates that as the anisotropy is varied the quantum phase transition occurs between two different mechanisms of the 1/3 magnetization plateau. The phase diagram with respect to the anisotropy and the ferromagnetic coupling is also presented.

S=2 Quantum Spin Chain with the Biquadratic Exchange Interaction

The $S=2$ quantum spin chain with the single-ion anisotropy $D$ and the biquadratic exchange interaction $J_{\rm BQ}$ is investigated using the numerical diagonalization of finite-size clusters and the level spectroscopy analysis. It is found that the intermediate-$D$ phase corresponding to the symmetry protected topological (SPT) phase appears in a wide region of the ground state phase diagram. We also obtain the phase diagram at the half of the saturation magnetization which includes the SPT plateau phase.

Ground-State Phase Diagram of an Anisotropic S=1 Ferromagnetic-Antiferromagnetic Bond-Alternating Chain

By using mainly numerical methods, we investigate the ground-state phase diagram (GSPD) of an $S=1$ ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic bond-alternating chain with the $XXZ$ and the on-site anisotropies. This system can be mapped onto an anisotropic spin-2 chain when the ferromagnetic interaction is much stronger than the antiferromagnetic interaction. Since there are many quantum parameters in this system, we numerically obtained the GSPD on the plane of the magnitude of the antiferromagnetic coupling versus its $XXZ$ anisotropy, by use of the exact diagonalization, the level spectroscopy as well as the phenomenological renormalization group. The obtained GSPD consists of six phases. They are the $XY$1, the large-$D$ (LD), the intermediate-$D$ (ID), the Haldane (H), the spin-1 singlet dimer (SD), and the Néel phases. Among them, the LD, the H, and the SD phases are the trivial phases, while the ID phase is the symmetry-protected topological phase. The former three are smoothly connected without any quantum phase transitions. It is also emphasized that the ID phase appears in a wider region compared with the case of the GSPD of the anisotropic spin-2 chain with the $XXZ$ and the on-site anisotropies. We also compare the obtained GSPD with the result of the perturbation theory.

Magnetization Plateau of the Distorted Diamond Spin Chain

The frustrated quantum spin system on the distorted diamond chain lattice is investigated using the numerical diagonalization of finite-size clusters and the level spectroscopy analysis. In the previous work this system was revealed to exhibit the 1/3 magnetization plateau due to two different mechanisms depending on the coupling parameters, and the phase diagram at the 1/3 magnetization was obtained. In the present work it is found that the 1/3 magnetization plateau vanishes for sufficiently large $XY$-like coupling anisotropy. The phase diagram based on the level spectroscopy analysis is also presented.

Quantum Phase Transitions of the Distorted Diamond Spin Chain

The frustrated quantum spin system on the distorted diamond chain lattice suitable for the alumoklyuchevskite is investigated using the numerical diagonalization of finite-size clusters and the level spectroscopy analysis. It is found that this model exhibits three quantum phases; the ferrimagnetic phase, the spin gap one, and the gapless Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid depending on the exchange coupling parameters. The ground state phase diagram is presented.

Ground-State Phase Diagram of the Bond-Alternating $S=2$ Quantum Spin Chain with the $XXZ$ and On-Site Anisotropies -- Symmetry Protected Topological Phase versus Trivial Phase

We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the bond-alternating $S=2$ quantum spin chain with the $XXZ$ and on-site anisotropies. For the on-site anisotropies, in addition to the popular $D_2 \sum_j (S_j^z)^2$ term, we consider the $D_4 \sum_j (S_j^z)^4$ term. Mainly we use the exact diagonalization and the level spectroscopy analysis. We show that the Haldane state, large-$D$ state and the Dimer2 state belong to the same trivial phase, by finding the existence of adiabatic paths directly connecting these states without the quantum phase transition. Similarly, we show that the intermediate-$D$ state and the Dimer1 state belong to the same symmetry protected topological phase.

Effect of monomer-monomer interactions on the phase diagrams of the S=1/2 distorted diamond type quantum spin chain

By use of mainly the exact diagonalization and the level spectroscopy method, we investigate the ground-state phase diagrams of the $S=1/2$ distorted diamond type quantum spin chain with the monomer-monomer interactions and/or ferromagnetic interactions for the zero magnetic field case, as well as the $M=M_{\rm s}/3$ case and the $M=(2/3)M_{\rm s}$ case, where $M$ is the total magnetization and $M_{\rm s}$ is the saturation magnetization. The magnetization plateau at $M=M_{\rm s}/3$ vanishes in the region where the ferromagnetic interaction is rather strong. The monomer-monomer interaction remarkably stabilizes the magnetization plateau at $M=(2/3)M_{\rm s}$.

Ground-state phase diagram of an anisotropic S=1/2 ladder with alternating rung interactions

Employing mainly numerical methods, we explore the ground-state phase diagram of an anisotropic $S=1/2$ ladder, in which leg interactions are uniform and isotropic, while rung interactions are alternating and have a common Ising-type anisotropy. We determine the phase diagram in the case where $J_{\rm leg}=0.2$ (antiferromagnetic), $J_{\rm rung}=-1.0$ (ferromagnetic) and $|J_{\rm rung}'|\!\leq\!1.0$, the first one being the magnitude of the leg interaction and the second and third ones those of the rung interactions, which are alternating. It is emphasized that the system has a frustration when $J_{\rm rung}'$ is positive. We find that, in the frustrated region, the Haldane state appears as the ground state even when the Ising character of rung interactions is strong. This appearance of the Haldane phase is contrary to the ordinary situation, and it is called the inversion phenomenon concerning the interaction anisotropy. We also find that an incommensurate state becomes the ground state in a portion of the Haldane phase region.

Edge Modes in the Intermediate-D and Large-D Phases of the S=2 Quantum Spin Chain with XXZ and On-Site Anisotropies

We investigate the edge modes at T=0 in the intermediate-D (ID) phase and the large-D (LD) phase of the S=2 quantum spin chain with the XXZ anisotropy and the generalized on-site anisotropies by use of the DMRG. There exists a gapless edge mode in the ID phase, while no gapless edge mode in the LD phase. These results are consistent with the physical pictures of these phases. We also show the ground-state phase diagrams obtained by use of the exact diagonalization and the level spectroscopy analysis.

Inversion Phenomena of the Anisotropies of the Hamiltonian and the Wave Function in Quantum Spin Chains

We investigate the inversion phenomena between the XXZ anisotropies of the Hamiltonian and the wave function in quantum spin chains. We focus on the S=1/2 geometrically frustrated 3-leg ladder system with the XXZ interaction anisotropy. By use of the degenerate perturbation theory from the strong rung coupling limit, we have obtained the ground-state phase diagram. In some parameter regions, the Tomonaga-Luttinger spin liquid state is realized in spite of the Ising-like anisotropy, and the Neel state in spite of the XY-like anisotropy.

Randomness Effect on the Temperature Dependence of the Finite Field Magnetization of a One-Dimensional Spin Gapped System

We investigate the temperature dependence of the finite-field magnetization of the S=1/2 bond-alternating XY model in the Random magnetic field along the z-direction having the Lorentzian distribution. The random-averaged free energy can be exactly calculated, which enables us to obtain the thermodynamical quantities. The temperature dependence of the finite-field magnetization shows various behaviors depending on the parameters $δ$ and $Γ$, where $δ$ and $Γ$ are the bond-alternation parameter and the Lorentzian distribution parameter, respectively.

Anomalous behavior of the spin gap of a spin-1/2 two-leg antiferromagnetic ladder with Ising-like rung interactions

Using mainly numerical methods, we investigate the width of the spin gap of a spin-1/2 two-leg ladder described by $\cH= J_\rl \sum_{j=1}^{N/2} [ \vS_{j,a} \cdot \vS_{j+1,a} + \vS_{j,b} \cdot \vS_{j+1,b} ] + J_\rr \sum_{j=1}^{N/2} [λ(S^x_{j,a} S^x_{j,b} + S^y_{j,a} S^y_{j,b}) + S^z_{j,a} S^z_{j,b}] $, where $S^α_{j,a(b)}$ denotes the $α$-component of the spin-1/2 operator at the $j$-th site of the $a (b)$ chain. We mainly focus on the $J_\rr \gg J_\rl > 0$ and $|λ| \ll 1$ case. The width of the spin gap as a function of $λ$ anomalously increases near $λ= 0$; for instance, for $-0.1 < λ< 0.1$ when $J_{\rm l}/J_{\rm r} = 0.1$. The gap formation mechanism is thought to be different for the $λ< 0$ and $λ> 0$ cases. Since, in usual cases, the width of the gap becomes zero or small at the point where the gap formation mechanism changes, the above gap-increasing phenomenon in the present case is anomalous. We explain the origin of this anomalous phenomenon by use of the degenerate perturbation theory. We also draw the ground-state phase diagram.

Spin-Chirality Separation and S_3-Symmetry Breakings in the Magnetization Plateau of the Quantum Spin Tube

We study the magnetization plateau state of the three-leg spin-1/2 tube in the strong rung coupling region, where S_3-symmetry breakings and low-energy chirality degree of freedom play crucial roles. On the basis of the effective chirality model and density matrix renormalization group, we clarify that, as the leg coupling increases, the chirality liquid with gapless non-magnetic excitations, the spin imbalance phase and the vector-spin-chirality ordered phase emerge without closing the plateau spin gap. The relevance of these results to experiments is also discussed.

Haldane, Large-D and Intermediate-D States in an S=2 Quantum Spin Chain with On-Site and XXZ Anisotropies

Using mainly numerical methods, we investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the S=2 quantum spin chain described by $H = \sum_j (S_j^x S_{j+1}^x + S_j^y S_{j+1}^y + ΔS_j^z S_{j+1}^z) + D \sum_j (S_j^z)^2$, where $Δ$ denotes the $XXZ$ anisotropy parameter of the nearest-neighbor interactions and $D$ the on-site anisotropy parameter. We restrict ourselves to the case with $Δ\ge 0$ and $D \ge 0$ for simplicity. Each of the phase boundary lines is determined by the level spectroscopy or the phenomenological renormalization analysis of numerical results of exact-diagonalization calculations. The resulting phase diagram on the $Δ$-$D$ plane consists of four phases; the XY 1 phase, the Haldane/large-$D$ phase, the intermediate-$D$ phase and the Néel phase. The remarkable natures of the phase diagram are: (1) the Haldane state and the large-$D$ state belong to the same phase; (2) there exists the intermediate-$D$ phase which was predicted by Oshikawa in 1992; (3) the shape of the phase diagram on the $Δ$-$D$ plane is different from that believed so far. We note that this is the first report of the observation of the intermediate-$D$ phase.

Quantum spin nanotubes -- frustration, competing orders and criticalities

Recent developments of theoretical studies on spin nanotubes are reviewed, especially focusing on the $S=1/2$ three-leg spin tube. In contrast to the three-leg spin ladder, the tube has a spin gap in case of the regular-triangle unit cellwhen the rung interaction is sufficiently large. The effective theory based on the Hubbard Hamiltonian indicates a quantum phase transition to the gapless spin liquid due to the lattice distortion to an isosceles triangle. This is also supported by the numerical diagonalization and the density matrix renormalization group analyses. Furthermore, combining analytical and numerical approaches, we reveal several novel magnetic-field-induced phenomena: Néel, dimer, chiral and/or inhomogeneous orders, new mechanism for the magnetization plateau formation, and others. The recently synthesized spin tube materials are also briefly introduced.

Inversion phenomenon and phase diagram of the $S=1/2$ distorted diamond chain with the $XXZ$ interaction anisotropy

We discuss the anisotropies of the Hamiltonian and the wave-function in an $S=1/2$ distorted diamond chain. The ground-state phase diagram of this model is investigated using the degenerate perturbation theory up to the first order and the level spectroscopy analysis of the numerical diagonalization data. In some regions of the obtained phase diagram, the anisotropy of the Hamiltonian and that of the wave-function are inverted, which we call inversion phenomenon; the Néel phase appears for the XY-like anisotropy and the spin-fluid phase appears for the Ising-like anisotropy. Three key words are important for this nature, which are frustration, the trimer nature, and the $XXZ$ anisotropy.

Anomalous magnetization process in frustrated spin ladders

We study, at T=0, the anomalies in the magnetization curve of the S=1 two-leg ladder with frustrated interactions. We focus mainly on the existence of the $M=\Ms/2$ plateau, where $\Ms$ is the saturation magnetization. We use analytical methods (degenerate perturbation theory and non-Abelian bosonization) as well as numerical methods (level spectroscopy and density matrix renormalization group), which lead to the consistent conclusion with each other. We also touch on the $M=\Ms/4$ and $M=(3/4)\Ms$ plateaux and cusps.

Finite-Field Ground State of the S=1 Antiferromagnetic-Ferromagnetic Bond-Alternating Chain

We investigate the finite-field ground state of the S=1 antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic bond-alternating chain described by the Hamiltonian ${\calH}=\sum\nolimits_{\ell}\bigl\{\vecS_{2\ell-1}\cdot\vecS_{2\ell} +J\vecS_{2\ell}\cdot\vecS_{2\ell+1}\bigr\} +D\sum\nolimits_{\ell} \bigl(S_{\ell}^z)^2 -H\textstyle\sum\nolimits_\ell S_\ell^z$, where \hbox{$J\leq0$} and \hbox{$-\infty<D<\infty$}. We find that two kinds of magnetization plateaux at a half of the saturation magnetization, the 1/2-plateaux, appear in the ground-state magnetization curve; one of them is of the Haldane type and the other is of the large-$D$-type. We determine the 1/2-plateau phase diagram on the $D$ versus $J$ plane, applying the twisted-boundary-condition level spectroscopy methods developed by Kitazawa and Nomura. We also calculate the ground-state magnetization curves and the magnetization phase diagrams by means of the density-matrix renormalization-group method.

Magnetic properties of the $S=1/2$ distorted diamond chain at T=0

We explore, at T=0, the magnetic properties of the $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic distorted diamond chain described by the Hamiltonian ${\cal H} = \sum_{j=1}^{N/3}{J_1 ({\bi S}_{3j-1} \cdot {\bi S}_{3j} + {\bi S}_{3j} \cdot {\bi S}_{3j+1}) + J_2 {\bi S}_{3j+1} \cdot {\bi S}_{3j+2} + J_3 ({\bi S}_{3j-2} \cdot {\bi S}_{3j} + {\bi S}_{3j} \cdot {\bi S}_{3j+2})} \allowbreak - H \sum_{l=1}^{N} S_l^z $ with $J_1, J_2, J_3\ge0$, which well models ${\rm A_3 Cu_3 (PO_4)_4}$ with ${\rm A = Ca, Sr}$, ${\rm Bi_4 Cu_3 V_2 O_{14}}$ and azurite $\rm Cu_3(OH)_2(CO_3)_2$. We employ the physical consideration, the degenerate perturbation theory, the level spectroscopy analysis of the numerical diagonalization data obtained by the Lanczos method and also the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. We investigate the mechanisms of the magnetization plateaux at $M=M_s/3$ and $M=(2/3)M_s$, and also show the precise phase diagrams on the $(J_2/J_1, J_3/J_1)$ plane concerning with these magnetization plateaux, where $M=\sum_{l=1}^{N} S_l^z$ and $M_s$ is the saturation magnetization. We also calculate the magnetization curves and the magnetization phase diagrams by means of the DMRG method.

Quantum magnetization plateaux of an anisotropic ferrimagnetic spin chain

The magnetization curve of the $(S,s)=(1,1/2)$ ferrimagnetic alternating spin chain with the single-ion anisotropy $D$ is investigated with the numerical exact diagonalization of finite clusters and size-scaling analyses. The system has a plateau at 1/3 of the saturation moment, which corresponds to the spontaneous magnetization for D=0. Varying $D$ in the 1/3-magnetized ground state under the external field along the axis of $D$, a quantum phase transition is revealed to occur at the critical value $D/J=1.114 \pm 0.001$ where the plateau vanishes. Except for the critical point, the plateau is always opening, but the mechanism is different between $D<D_c$ and $D>D_c$. The change of mechanisms is an evidence to clarify that the plateau originates from the quantization of magnetization.

Inversion Phenomena of the Anisotropies of the Hamiltonian and the Wave-Function in the Distorted Diamond Type Spin Chain

We investigate the ground-sate phase diagram of the XXZ version of the S=1/2 distorted diamond chain by use of the degenerate perturbation theory near the truncation point. In case of the XY-like interaction anisotropy, the phase diagram consists of the Neel phase and the spin-fluid phase. For the Ising-like interaction anisotropy case, it consists of three phases: the ferrimagnetic phase, the Neel phase and the spin-fluid phase. The magnetization in the ferrimagnetic phase is 1/3 of the saturation magnetization. The remarkable nature of the phase diagram is the existence of the Neel phase, although the interaction anisotropy is XY-like. And also, the spin-fluid phase appears in spite of the Ising-like interaction anisotropy. We call these regions "inversion regions".

Magnetization Plateau in the S=1 Spin Ladder with Competing Interactions

Very recently a non-trivial magnetization plateau at 1/4 of the saturation magnetization was observed in the S=1 spin ladder BIP-TENO. In our previous work we proposed a possible mechanism of the plateau based on the second- and third-neighbor exchange couplings which lead to frustration. In order to confirm the realization of the mechanism, we compare the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and some critical magnetic fields obtained by the numerical calculation for the proposed model with the experimental results.

Mechanisms for Non-Trivial Magnetization Plateaux of an S=1 Frustrated Spin Ladder

We investigate the non-trivial magnetization plateau at 1/4 of the saturation magnetization of S=1 spin ladder, especially with reference to recent experimental results on a new organic tetraradical 3,3',5,5'-tetrakis(N-tert-butylaminoxyl)biphenyl, abbreviated as BIP-TENO. We propose three mechanisms for the formation of the plateau; the Neel mechanism, the dimer mechanism and the spin-Peierls mechanism. We also discuss the effect of four-spin exchange interactions.
