Continuous phase transition between Neel and valence bond solid phases in a J-Q-like spin ladder system

We investigate a quantum phase transition between a Neel phase and a valence bond solid (VBS) phase, in each of which a different Z2 symmetry is broken, in a spin-1/2 two-leg XXZ ladder with a four-spin interaction. The model can be viewed as a one-dimensional variant of the celebrated J-Q model on a square lattice. By means of variational uniform matrix product state calculations and an effective field theory, we determine the phase diagram of the model, and present evidences that the Neel-VBS transition is continuous and belongs to the Gaussian universality class with the central charge c=1. In particular, the critical exponents $β, η,$ and, $ν$ are found to satisfy the constraints expected for a Gaussian transition within numerical accuracy. These exponents do not detectably change along the phase boundary while they are in general allowed to do so for the Gaussian class.

Effects of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in volborthite: Magnetic orders and thermal Hall effect

Volborthite offers an interesting example of a highly frustrated quantum magnet in which ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions compete on anisotropic kagome lattices. A recent density functional theory calculation has provided a magnetic model based on coupled trimers, which is consistent with a broad 1/3-magnetization plateau observed experimentally. Here we study the effects of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions in volborthite. We derive an effective model in which pseudospin-1/2 moments emerging on trimers form a network of an anisotropic triangular lattice. Using the effective model, we show that for a magnetic field perpendicular to the kagome layer, magnon excitations from the 1/3-plateau feel a Berry curvature due to the DM interactions, giving rise to a thermal Hall effect. Our magnon Bose gas theory can explain qualitative features of the magnetization and the thermal Hall conductivity measured experimentally. A further quantitative comparison with experiment poses constraints on the coupling constants in the effective model, promoting a quasi-one-dimensional picture. Based on this picture, we analyze low-temperature magnetic phase diagrams using effective field theory, and point out their crucial dependence on the field direction.

Fractional quantum Hall states of dipolar fermions in a strained optical lattice

We study strongly correlated ground states of dipolar fermions in a honeycomb optical lattice with spatial variations in hopping amplitudes. Similar to a strained graphene, such nonuniform hopping amplitudes produce valley-dependent pseudomagnetic fields for fermions near the two Dirac points, resulting in the formation of Landau levels. The dipole moments polarized perpendicular to the honeycomb plane yield a long-range repulsive interaction. By exact diagonalization in the zeroth-Landau-level basis, we show that this repulsive interaction stabilizes a variety of valley-polarized fractional quantum Hall states such as Laughlin and composite-fermion states. The present system thus offers an intriguing platform for emulating fractional quantum Hall physics in a static optical lattice. We calculate the energy gaps above these incompressible states, and discuss the temperature scales required for their experimental realization.

Quantum critical behavior influenced by measurement backaction in ultracold gases

Recent realizations of quantum gas microscope offer the possibility of continuous monitoring of the dynamics of a quantum many-body system at the single-particle level. By analyzing effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonians of interacting bosons in an optical lattice and continuum, we demonstrate that the backaction of quantum measurement shifts the quantum critical point and gives rise to a unique critical phase beyond the terrain of the standard universality class. We perform mean-field and strong-coupling-expansion analyses and show that non-Hermitian contributions shift the superfluid--to-Mott-insulator transition point. Using a low-energy effective field theory, we discuss critical behavior of the one-dimensional interacting Bose gas subject to the measurement backaction. We derive an exact ground state of the effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian and find a unique critical behavior beyond the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid universality class. We propose experimental implementations of post-selections using quantum gas microscopes to simulate the non-Hermitian dynamics and argue that our results can be investigated with current experimental techniques in ultracold atoms.

Excitation band topology and edge matter waves in Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices

We show that Bose-Einstein condensates in optical lattices with broken time-reversal symmetry can support chiral edge modes originating from nontrivial bulk excitation band topology. To be specific, we analyze a Bose-Hubbard extension of the Haldane model, which can be realized with recently developed techniques of manipulating honeycomb optical lattices. The topological properties of Bloch bands known for the noninteracting case are smoothly carried over to Bogoliubov excitation bands for the interacting case. We show that the parameter ranges that display topological bands enlarge with increasing the Hubbard interaction or the particle density. In the presence of sharp boundaries, chiral edge modes appear in the gap between topological excitation bands. We demonstrate that by coherently transferring a portion of a condensate into an edge mode, a density wave is formed along the edge owing to an interference with the background condensate. This offers a unique method of detecting an edge mode through a macroscopic quantum phenomenon.

Entanglement spectra between coupled Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids: Applications to ladder systems and topological phases

We study the entanglement spectrum (ES) and entropy between two coupled Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids (TLLs) on parallel periodic chains. This problem gives access to the entanglement properties of various interesting systems, such as spin ladders as well as two-dimensional topological phases. By expanding interchain interactions to quadratic order in bosonic fields, we are able to calculate the ES for both gapped and gapless systems using only methods for free theories. In certain gapless phases of coupled non-chiral TLLs, we interestingly find an ES with a dispersion relation proportional to the square root of the subsystem momentum, which we relate to a long-range interaction in the entanglement Hamiltonian. We numerically demonstrate the emergence of this unusual dispersion in a model of hard-core bosons on a ladder. In gapped phases of coupled non-chiral TLLs, which are relevant to spin ladders and topological insulators, we show that the ES consists of linearly dispersing modes, which resembles the spectrum of a single-chain TLL but is characterized by a modified TLL parameter. Based on a calculation for coupled chiral TLLs, we are also able to provide a very simple proof for the correspondence between the ES and the edge-state spectrum in quantum Hall systems consistent with previous numerical and analytical studies.

Global phase diagram of two-component Bose gases in antiparallel magnetic fields

We study the ground-state phase diagram of two-dimensional two-component (or pseudospin-1/2) Bose gases in mutually antiparallel synthetic magnetic fields in the space of the total filling factor and the ratio of the intercomponent coupling $g_{\uparrow\downarrow}$ to the intracomponent one g>0. This time-reversal-invariant setting represents a bosonic analogue of spin Hall systems. Using exact diagonalization, we find that (fractional) quantum spin Hall states composed of a pair of nearly independent quantum Hall states are remarkably robust and persist for $g_{\uparrow\downarrow}$ up to as large as g. For $g_{\uparrow\downarrow}=-g$, we find the exact many-body ground state in which particles in different spin states form pairs. This gives the exact critical line beyond which the system collapses.

Entanglement entropy between two coupled Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids

We consider a system of two coupled Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids (TLL) on parallel chains and study the Renyi entanglement entropy $S_n$ between the two chains. Here the entanglement cut is introduced between the chains, not along the perpendicular direction as used in previous studies of one-dimensional systems. The limit $n\to1$ corresponds to the von Neumann entanglement entropy. The system is effectively described by two-component bosonic field theory with different TLL parameters in the symmetric/antisymmetric channels as far as the coupled system remains in a gapless phase. We argue that in this system, $S_n$ is a linear function of the length of the chains (boundary law) followed by a universal subleading constant $γ_n$ determined by the ratio of the two TLL parameters. The formulae of $γ_n$ for integer $n\ge 2$ are derived using (a) ground-state wave functionals of TLLs and (b) boundary conformal field theory, which lead to the same result. These predictions are checked in a numerical diagonalization analysis of a hard-core bosonic model on a ladder. Although the analytic continuation of $γ_n$ to $n\to 1$ turns out to be a difficult problem, our numerical result suggests that the subleading constant in the von Neumann entropy is also universal. Our results may provide useful characterization of inherently anisotropic quantum phases such as the sliding Luttinger liquid phase via qualitatively different behaviors of the entanglement entropy with the entanglement partitions along different directions.

Integer Quantum Hall State in Two-Component Bose Gases in a Synthetic Magnetic Field

We study two-component (or pseudospin-1/2) Bose gases in a strong synthetic magnetic field. Using exact diagonalization, we show that a bosonic analogue of an integer quantum Hall state with no intrinsic topological order appears at the total filling factor ν=1+1 when the strengths of intracomponent and intercomponent interactions are comparable with each other. This provides a prime example of a symmetry-protected topological phase in a controlled setting of quantum gases. The real-space entanglement spectrum of this state is found to be comprised of counter-propagating chiral modes consistent with the edge theory derived from the effective Chern-Simons theory.

Ground-state phase diagram of a spin-1/2 frustrated ferromagnetic XXZ chain: Haldane dimer phase and gapped/gapless chiral phases

The ground-state phase diagram of a spin-1/2 XXZ chain with competing ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor (J_1<0) and antiferromagnetic second-neighbor (J_2>0) exchange couplings is studied by means of the infinite time evolving block decimation algorithm and effective field theories. For the SU(2)-symmetric (Heisenberg) case, we show that the nonmagnetic phase in the range -4<J_1/J_2<0 has a small but finite ferromagnetic dimer order. We argue that this spontaneous dimer order is associated with effective spin-1 degrees of freedom on dimerized bonds, which collectively form a valence bond solid state as in the spin-1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain (the Haldane spin chain). We thus call this phase the Haldane dimer phase. With easy-plane anisotropy, the model exhibits a variety of phases including the vector chiral phase with gapless excitations and the even-parity dimer and Neel phases with gapped excitations, in addition to the Haldane dimer phase. Furthermore, we show the existence of gapped phases with coexisting orders in narrow regions that intervene between the gapless chiral phase and any one of Haldane dimer, even-parity dimer, and Neel phases. Possible implications for quasi-one-dimensional edge-sharing cuprates are discussed.

Quantum Hall States in Rapidly Rotating Two-Component Bose Gases

We investigate strongly correlated phases of two-component (or pseudo-spin-1/2) Bose gases under rapid rotation through exact diagonalization on a torus geometry. In the case of pseudo-spin-independent contact interactions, we find the formation of gapped spin-singlet states at the filling factors ν=k/3+k/3 (k/3 filling for each component) with integer k. We present numerical evidences that the gapped state with k=2 is well described as a non-Abelian spin-singlet (NASS) state, in which excitations feature non-Abelian statistics. Furthermore, we find the phase transition from the product of composite fermion states to the NASS state by changing the ratio of the intercomponent to intracomponent interactions.

Competing phases in spin-1/2 J1-J2 chain with easy-plane anisotropy

We summarize our theoretical findings on the ground-state phase diagram of the spin-1/2 XXZ chain having competing nearest-neighbor (J1) and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor (J2) couplings. Our study is mainly concerned with the case of ferromagnetic J1, and the case of antiferromagnetic J1 is briefly reviewed for comparison. The phase diagram contains a rich variety of phases in the plane of J1/J2 versus the XXZ anisotropy Delta: vector-chiral phases, Néel phases, several dimer phases, and Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid phases. We discuss the vector-chiral order that appears for a remarkably wide parameter space, successive Néel-dimer phase transitions, and an emergent nonlocal string order in a narrow region of ferromagnetic J1 side.

Ferromagnetically coupled dimers on the distorted Shastry-Sutherland lattice: Application to (CuCl)LaNb2O7

A recent study [Tassel {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 105}, 167205 (2010)] has proposed a remarkable spin model for (CuCl)LaNb2O7, in which dimers are ferromagnetically coupled to each other on the distorted Shastry-Sutherland lattice. In this model, the intra-dimer exchange coupling J>0 is antiferromagnetic, while the inter-dimer exchange couplings are ferromagnetic and take different values, J_x,J_y<0, in the two bond directions. Anticipating that the highly frustrated character of this model may lead to a wide range of behaviors in (CuCl)LaNb2O7 and related compounds, we theoretically investigate the ground state phase diagram of this model in detail using the following three approaches: a strong-coupling expansion for small J_x and J_y, exact diagonalization for finite clusters, and a Schwinger boson mean field theory. When |J_x|, |J_y| <~ J, the system stays in a dimer singlet phase with a finite spin gap. This state is adiabatically connected to the decoupled-dimer limit J_x=J_y=0. We show that the magnetization process of this phase depends crucially on the spatial anisotropy of the inter-dimer couplings. The magnetization shows a jump or a smooth increase for weak and strong anisotropy, respectively, after the spin gap closes at a certain magnetic field. When |J_x| or |J_y| >~ J, quantum phase transitions to various magnetically ordered phases (ferromagnetic, collinear stripe, and spiral) occur. The Schwinger boson analysis demonstrates that quantum fluctuations split the classical degeneracy of different spiral ground states. Implications for (CuCl)LaNb2O7 and related compounds are discussed in light of our theoretical results and existing experimental data.

Chiral order and electromagnetic dynamics in one-dimensional multiferroic cuprates

We show by unbiased numerical calculations that the ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor exchange interaction stabilizes a vector spin chiral order against the quantum fluctuation in a frustrated spin-1/2 chain relevant to multiferroic cuprates, LiCu2O2 and LiCuVO4. Our realistic semi-classical analyses for LiCu2O2 resolve controversies on the helical magnetic structure and unveil the pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone modes as the origin of experimentally observed electromagnons.

Spontaneous population imbalance in two-component Bose and Fermi gases

We study two-component (or pseudo-spin-1/2) Bose or Fermi gases in one dimension, in which particles are convertible between the components. Through bosonization and numerical analyses of a simple lattice model, we demonstrate that, in such gases, a strong intercomponent repulsion induces spontaneous population imbalance between the components, namely, the ferromagnetism of the pseudo spins. The imbalanced phase contains gapless charge excitations characterized as a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid and gapped spin excitations. We uncover a crucial effect of the intercomponent particle hopping on the transition to the imbalanced phase. In the absence of this hopping, the transition is of first order. At the transition point, the energy spectrum reveals certain degeneracy indicative of an emergent SU(2) symmetry. With an infinitesimal intercomponent hopping, the transition becomes of Ising type. We determine the phase diagram of the model accurately and test the reliability of the weak-coupling bosonization formalism.

Unconventional Neel and dimer orders in a spin-1/2 frustrated ferromagnetic chain with easy-plane anisotropy

We study the ground-state phase diagram of a one-dimensional spin-1/2 easy-plane XXZ model with a ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor (NN) coupling $J_1$ and a competing next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) antiferromagnetic coupling $J_2$ in the parameter range $0<J_2/|J_1|<0.4$. When $J_2/|J_1|\lesssim1/4$, the model is in a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid phase which is adiabatically connected to the critical phase of the XXZ model of $J_2=0$. On the basis of the effective (sine-Gordon) theory and numerical analyses of low-lying energy levels of finite-size systems, we show that the NNN coupling induces phase transitions from the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid to gapped phases with either Neel or dimer order. Interestingly, these two types of ordered phases appear alternately as the easy-plane anisotropy is changed towards the isotropic limit. The appearance of the antiferromagnetic (Neel) order in this model is remarkable, as it is strongly unfavored by both the easy-plane ferromagnetic NN coupling and antiferromagnetic NNN coupling in the classical-spin picture. We argue that emergent trimer degrees of freedom play a crucial role in the formation of the Neel order.

Topological Entanglement Entropy in the Quantum Dimer Model on the Triangular Lattice

A characterization of topological order in terms of bi-partite entanglement was proposed recently [A. Kitaev and J. Preskill, Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 110404 (2006); M. Levin and X.-G. Wen, ibid, 110405]. It was argued that in a topological phase there is a universal additive constant in the entanglement entropy, called the topological entanglement entropy, which reflects the underlying gauge theory for the topological order. In the present paper, we evaluate numerically the topological entanglement entropy in the ground-states of a quantum dimer model on the triangular lattice, which is known to have a dimer liquid phase with Z_2 topological order. We examine the two original constructions to measure the topological entropy by combining entropies on plural areas, and we observe that in the large-area limit they both approach the value expected for Z_2 topological order. We also consider the entanglement entropy on a topologically non-trivial ``zigzag'' area and propose to use it as another way to measure the topological entropy.
