Group-invariant max filtering

Given a real inner product space $V$ and a group $G$ of linear isometries, we construct a family of $G$-invariant real-valued functions on $V$ that we call max filters. In the case where $V=\mathbb{R}^d$ and $G$ is finite, a suitable max filter bank separates orbits, and is even bilipschitz in the quotient metric. In the case where $V=L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)$ and $G$ is the group of translation operators, a max filter exhibits stability to diffeomorphic distortion like that of the scattering transform introduced by Mallat. We establish that max filters are well suited for various classification tasks, both in theory and in practice.

A note on tight projective 2-designs

We study tight projective 2-designs in three different settings. In the complex setting, Zauner's conjecture predicts the existence of a tight projective 2-design in every dimension. Pandey, Paulsen, Prakash, and Rahaman recently proposed an approach to make quantitative progress on this conjecture in terms of the entanglement breaking rank of a certain quantum channel. We show that this quantity is equal to the size of the smallest weighted projective 2-design. Next, in the finite field setting, we introduce a notion of projective 2-designs, we characterize when such projective 2-designs are tight, and we provide a construction of such objects. Finally, in the quaternionic setting, we show that every tight projective 2-design for H^d determines an equi-isoclinic tight fusion frame of d(2d-1) subspaces of R^d(2d+1) of dimension 3.

Doubly transitive lines I: Higman pairs and roux

We study lines through the origin of finite-dimensional complex vector spaces that enjoy a doubly transitive automorphism group. In doing so, we make fundamental connections with both discrete geometry and algebraic combinatorics. In particular, we show that doubly transitive lines are necessarily optimal packings in complex projective space, and we introduce a fruitful generalization of regular abelian distance-regular antipodal covers of the complete graph.

Frames generated by compact group actions

Let $K$ be a compact group, and let $ρ$ be a representation of $K$ on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}_ρ$. We classify invariant subspaces of $\mathcal{H}_ρ$ in terms of range functions, and investigate frames of the form $\{ρ(ξ) f_i\}_{ξ\in K, i \in I}$. This is done first in the setting of translation invariance, where $K$ is contained in a larger group $G$ and $ρ$ is left translation on $\mathcal{H}_ρ= L^2(G)$. For this case, our analysis relies on a new, operator-valued version of the Zak transform. For more general representations, we develop a calculational system known as a "bracket" to analyze representation structures and frames with a single generator. Several applications are explored. Then we turn our attention to frames with multiple generators, giving a duality theorem that encapsulates much of the existing research on frames generated by finite groups, as well as classical duality of frames and Riesz sequences.

Subspaces of $L^2(G)$ invariant under translation by an abelian subgroup

For a second countable locally compact group $G$ and a closed abelian subgroup $H$, we give a range function classification of closed subspaces in $L^2(G)$ invariant under left translation by $H$. For a family $\mathscr{A} \subset L^2(G)$, this classification ties with a set of conditions under which the translations of $\mathscr{A}$ by $H$ form a continuous frame or a Riesz sequence. When $G$ is abelian, our work relies on a fiberization map; for the more general case, we introduce an analogue of the Zak transform. Both transformations intertwine translation with modulation, and both rely on a new group-theoretic tool: for a closed subgroup $Γ\subset G$, we produce a measure on the space $Γ\backslash G$ of right cosets that gives a measure space isomorphism $G \cong Γ\times Γ\backslash G$. Outside of the group setting, we consider a more general problem: for a measure space $X$ and a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$, we investigate conditions under which a family of functions in $L^2(X;\mathcal{H})$ multiplies with a basis-like system in $L^2(X)$ to produce a continuous frame or a Riesz sequence in $L^2(X;\mathcal{H})$. Finally, we explore connections with dual integrable representations of LCA groups, as introduced by Hern{á}ndez et al.
