Broadband bright biphotons from periodically poled triple-resonance metasurface

Biphotons from spontaneous parametric down conversion with broad bandwidth are highly wanted in many quantum technologies. However, achieving broad bandwidth in both frequency and momentum while keeping a high rate remains a challenge for both conventional nonlinear crystals and recently emerging nonlinear metasurfaces. Here, we address this challenge by introducing a periodically poled triple-resonance metasurface (PPTM) incorporating a nano-grating atop a periodically poled LiNbO$_3$ thin film. PPTM supports high-Q guided mode resonances at pump, signal, and idler wavelengths meanwhile enabling quasi-phase matching between three guided modes in a broad frequency/momentum range. The predicted biphoton rate is over 100 MHz/mW with a frequency bandwidth of 165 nm around 1550 nm and a momentum bandwidth of $13^\circ \times 6^\circ$, improving the state-of-the-art by over three orders of magnitude in rate and one order of magnitude in bandwidths. This ultrathin broadband bright biphoton source could stimulate system-level miniaturization of various free-space quantum photonic technologies.

On the Kirchhoff equation with prescribed mass and general nonlinearities

In the present paper, we apply a global branch approach to study the existence, non-existence and multiplicity of positive normalized solutions $(λ_c, u_c)\in \mathbb{R}\times H^1(\mathbb{R}^N)$ to the following Kirchhoff problem $$ -\left(a+b\int_{\mathbb{R}^N}|\nabla u|^2dx\right)Δu+λu=g(u)~\hbox{in}~\mathbb{R}^N,\;N\geq 1 $$ satisfying the normalization constraint $ \displaystyle\int_{\mathbb{R}^N}u^2=c, $ which appears in free vibrations of elastic strings. The parameters $a,b>0$ are prescribed as well as the mass $c>0$. Due to the presence of the non-local term $b\int_{\mathbb{R}^N}|\nabla u|^2dx Δu$, such problems lack the mountain pass geometry in the higher dimension case $N\geq 5$. Our result seems to be the first attempt in this aspect.

A new type of nodal solutions to singularly perturbed elliptic equations with supercritical growth

In this paper, we aim to investigate the following class of singularly perturbed elliptic problem $$ \left\{ \begin{array}{ll} \displaystyle -\varepsilon^2\triangle {u}+|x|^ηu =|x|^ηf(u)& \mbox{in}\,\, A, u=0 & \mbox{on}\,\, \partial A, \end{array} \right. $$ where $\varepsilon>0$, $η\in\mathbb{R}$, $A=\{x\in\R^{2N}:\,\,0<a<|x|<b\}$, $N\ge2$ and $f$ is a nonlinearity of $C^1$ class with supercritical growth. By a reduction argument, we show that there exists a nodal solution $u_\e$ with exactly two positive and two negative peaks, which concentrate on two different orthogonal spheres of dimension $N-1$ as $\e\rightarrow0$. In particular, we establish different concentration phenomena of four peaks when the parameter $η>2$, $η=2$ and $η<2$.

Gate-Tunable Spin-Orbit Coupling in a Germanium Hole Double Quantum Dot

Hole spins confined in semiconductor quantum dot systems have gained considerable interest for their strong spin-orbit interactions (SOIs) and relatively weak hyperfine interactions. Here we experimentally demonstrate a tunable SOI in a double quantum dot in a Germanium (Ge) hut wire (HW), which could help enable fast all-electric spin manipulations while suppressing unwanted decoherence. Specifically, we measure the transport spectra in the Pauli spin blockade regime in the double quantum dot device.By adjusting the interdot tunnel coupling, we obtain an electric field tuned spin-orbit length lso = 2.0 - 48.9 nm. This tunability of the SOI could pave the way toward the realization of high-fidelity qubits in Ge HW systems.

Hybrid integration of deterministic quantum dots-based single-photon sources with CMOS-compatible silicon carbide photonics

Thin film 4H-silicon carbide (4H-SiC) is emerging as a contender for realizing large-scale optical quantum circuits due to its high CMOS technology compatibility and large optical nonlinearities. Though, challenges remain in producing wafer-scale 4H-SiC thin film on insulator (4H-SiCOI) for dense integration of photonic circuits, and in efficient coupling of deterministic quantum emitters that are essential for scalable quantum photonics. Here we demonstrate hybrid integration of self-assembled InGaAs quantum dots (QDs) based single-photon sources (SPSs) with wafer-scale 4H-SiC photonic chips prepared by ion slicing technique. By designing a bilayer vertical coupler, we realize generation and highly efficient routing of single-photon emission in the hybrid quantum photonic chip. Furthermore, we realize a chip-integrated beamsplitter operation for triggered single photons through fabricating a 1x2 multi-mode interferometer (MMI) with a symmetric power splitting ratio of 50:50. The successful demonstration of heterogeneously integrating QDs-based SPSs on 4H-SiC photonic chip prepared by ion slicing technique constitutes an important step toward CMOS-compatible, fast reconfigurable quantum photonic circuits with deterministic SPSs.

Localized semiclassical states for Hamiltonian elliptic systems in dimension two

In this paper, we consider the Hamiltonian elliptic system in dimension two\begin{equation}\label{1.5}\aligned \left\{ \begin{array}{lll} -ε^2Δu+V(x)u=g(v)\ & \text{in}\quad \mathbb{R}^2,\\ -ε^2Δv+V(x)v=f(u)\ & \text{in}\quad \mathbb{R}^2, \end{array}\right.\endaligned \end{equation} where $V\in C(\mathbb{R}^2)$ has local minimum points, and $f,g\in C^1(\mathbb{R})$ are assumed to be either superlinear or asymptotically linear at infinity and of subcritical exponential growth in the sense of Trudinger-Moser inequality. Under only a local condition on $V$, we obtain a family of semiclassical states concentrating around local minimum points of $V$. In addition, in the case that $f$ and $g$ are superlinear at infinity, the decay and positivity of semiclassical states are also given. The proof is based on a reduction method, variational methods and penalization techniques.

Multi-peak solutions for singularly perturbed nonlinear Dirichlet problems involving critical growth

We consider the following singularly perturbed elliptic problem \[ - {\varepsilon ^2}Δu + u = f(u){\text{ in }}Ω,{\text{ }}u > 0{\text{ in }}Ω,{\text{ }}u = 0{\text{ on }}\partial Ω, \] where $Ω$ is a domain in ${\mathbb{R}^N}(N \ge 3)$, not necessarily bounded, with boundary $\partial Ω\in {C^2}$ and the nonlinearity $f$ is of critical growth. In this paper, we construct a family of multi-peak solutions to the equation given above which concentrate around any prescribed finite sets of local maxima of the distance function from the boundary $\partial Ω$.

Nodal solutions for quasilinear Schrödinger equations with asymptotically 3-linear nonlinearity

In this paper, we are concerned with the quasilinear Schrödinger equation \begin{equation*} -Δu+V(x)u-uΔ(u^2)=g(u),\ \ x\in \mathbb{R}^{N}, \end{equation*} where $N\geq3$, $V$ is radially symmetric and nonnegative, and $g$ is asymptotically 3-linear at infinity. In the case of $\inf_{\mathbb{R}^N}V>0$, we show the existence of a least energy sign-changing solution with exactly one node, and for any integer $k>0$, there are a pair of sign-changing solutions with $k$ nodes. Moreover, in the case of $\inf_{\mathbb{R}^N}V=0$, the problem above admits a least energy sign-changing solution with exactly one node. The proof is based on variational methods. In particular, some new tricks and the method of sign-changing Nehari manifold depending on a suitable restricted set are introduced to overcome the difficulty resulting from the appearance of asymptotically 3-linear nonlinearities.

Existence and multiplicity of bound state solutions to a Kirchhoff type equation with a general nonlinearity

In this paper, we consider the following Kirchhoff type equation $$ -\left(a+ b\int_{\R^3}|\nabla u|^2\right)\triangle {u}+V(x)u=f(u),\,\,x\in\R^3, $$ where $a,b>0$ and $f\in C(\R,\R)$, and the potential $V\in C^1(\R^3,\R)$ is positive, bounded and satisfies suitable decay assumptions. By using a new perturbation approach together with a new version of global compactness lemma of Kirchhoff type, we prove the existence and multiplicity of bound state solutions for the above problem with a general nonlinearity. We especially point out that neither the corresponding Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz condition nor any monotonicity assumption is required for $f$. Moreover, the potential $V$ may not be radially symmetry or coercive. As a prototype, the nonlinear term involves the power-type nonlinearity $f(u) = |u|^{p-2}u$ for $p\in (2, 6)$. In particular, our results generalize and improve the results by Li and Ye (J.Differential Equations, 257(2014): 566-600), in the sense that the case $p\in(2,3]$ is left open there.

Position-dependent chiral coupling between single quantum dots and cross waveguides

Chiral light-matter interaction between photonic nanostructures with quantum emitters shows great potential to implement spin-photon interfaces for quantum information processing. Position-dependent spin momentum locking of the quantum emitter is important for these chiral coupled nanostructures. Here, we report the position-dependent chiral coupling between quantum dots (QDs) and cross waveguides both numerically and experimentally. Four quantum dots distributed at different positions in the cross section are selected to characterize the chiral properties of the device. Directional emission is achieved in a single waveguide as well as in both two waveguides simultaneously. In addition, the QD position can be determined with the chiral contrasts from four outputs. Therefore, the cross waveguide can function as a one-way unidirectional waveguide and a circularly polarized beam splitter by placing the QD in a rational position, which has potential applications in spin-to-path encoding for complex quantum optical networks at the single-photon level.

Groundstates for Choquard type equations with Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev lower critical exponent

For the Choquard equation, which is a nonlocal nonlinear Schrödinger type equation, $ -Δu+V_{μ,ν} u=(I_α\ast |u|^{\frac{N+α}{N}}){|u|}^{\fracα{N}-1}u$, in $\mathbb{R}^N$ where $N\ge 3$, $V_{μ, ν} : \mathbb{R}^N \to \mathbb{R}$ is an external potential defined for $μ,ν\in\mathbb{R}$ and $x \in \mathbb{R}^N$ by $V_{μ, ν} (x)=1-μ/(ν^2 + |x|^2)$ and $I_α: \mathbb{R}^N \to 0$ is the Riesz potential for $α\in (0,N)$, we exhibit two thresholds $μ_ν,μ^ν>0$ such that the equation admits a positive ground state solution if and only if $μ_ν<μ<μ^ν$ and no ground state solution exists for $μ<μ_ν$. Moreover, if $μ>\max\left\{μ^ν,\frac{N^2(N-2)}{4(N+1)}\right\}$, then equation still admits a sign changing ground state solution provided $N\ge4$ or in dimension $N=3$ if in addition $\frac{3}{2}<α<3$ and ker$(-Δ+ V_{μ, ν}) = \{0\}$, namely in the non-resonant case.

A priori estimates and positivity for semiclassical ground states for systems of critical Schroedinger equations in dimension two

We consider in the whole plane the Hamiltonian coupling of semilinear Schroedinger equations which have critical growth in the sense of Moser. We prove that the (nonempty) set S of ground state solutions is compact up to translations. Moreover, ground states are uniformly bounded and uniformly decaying at infinity. Then we prove that actually the ground state is positive and radially symmetric. We apply those results to prove the existence of semiclassical ground states solutions to the singularly perturbed system when the external potential stays bounded away from zero. Namely, as the adimensionalized Planck constant vanishes, we prove the existence of minimal energy solutions which concentrate around the closest local minima of the potential with some precise asymptotic rate.

Ground states and semiclassical states of nonlinear Choquard equations involving Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev critical growth

We are concerned with the existence of ground states for nonlinear Choquard equations involving a critical nonlinearity in the sense of Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev. Our result complements previous results by Moroz and Van Schaftingen where the subcritical case was considered. Then, we focus on the existence of semi-classical states and by using a truncation argument approach, we establish the existence and concentration of single peak solutions concentrating around minima of the Schrödinger potential, as the Planck constant goes to zero. The result is robust in the sense that the nonlinearity is not required to satisfy monotonicity conditions nor the Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz condition.

Ground states for fractional Kirchhoff equations with critical nonlinearity in low dimension

We study the existence of ground states to a nonlinear fractional Kirchhoff equation with an external potential $V$. Under suitable assumptions on $V$, using the monotonicity trick and the profile decomposition, we prove the existence of ground states. In particular, the nonlinearity does not satisfy the Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz type condition or monotonicity assumptions.

Multi-peak solutions for nonlinear Choquard equation with a general nonlinearity

In this paper, we study a class of nonlinear Choquard type equations involving a general nonlinearity. By using the method of penalization argument, we show that there exists a family of solutions having multiple concentration regions which concentrate at the minimum points of the potential $V$. Moreover, the monotonicity of $f(s)/s$ and the so-called Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz condition are not required.

Infinitely many sign-changing solutions for the nonlinear Schrödinger-Poisson system

We investigate the existence of multiple bound state solutions, in particular sign-changing solutions. By using the method of invariant sets of descending flow, we prove that this system has infinitely many sign-changing solutions. In particular, the nonlinear term includes the power-type nonlinearity $f(u)=|u|^{p-2}u$ for the well-studied case $p\in(4,6)$, and the less-studied case $p\in(3,4)$, and for the latter case few existence results are available in the literature.

Monolithic growth of ultra-thin Ge nanowires on Si(001)

Self-assembled Ge wires with a height of only 3 unit cells and a length of up to 2 micrometers were grown on Si(001) by means of a catalyst-free method based on molecular beam epitaxy. The wires grow horizontally along either the [100] or the [010] direction. On atomically flat surfaces, they exhibit a highly uniform, triangular cross section. A simple thermodynamic model accounts for the existence of a preferential base width for longitudinal expansion, in quantitative agreement with the experimental findings. Despite the absence of intentional doping, first transistor-type devices made from single wires show low-resistive electrical contacts and single hole transport at sub-Kelvin temperatures. In view of their exceptionally small and self-defined cross section, these Ge wires hold promise for the realization of hole systems with exotic properties and provide a new development route for silicon-based nanoelectronics.

Quantum entanglement and phase transition in a two-dimensional photon-photon pair model

We propose a two-dimensional model consisting of photons and photon pairs. In the model, the mixed gas of photons and photon pairs is formally equivalent to a two-dimensional system of massive bosons with non-vanishing chemical potential, which implies the existence of two possible condensate phases. Using the variational method, we discuss the quantum phase transition of the mixed gas and obtain the critical coupling line analytically. Moreover, we also find that the phase transition of the photon gas can be interpreted as second harmonic generation. We then discuss the entanglement between photons and photon pairs. Additionally, we also illustrate how the entanglement between photons and photon pairs can be associated with the phase transition of the system.

Standing Waves for nonlinear Schrodinger Equations involving critical growth

We consider the following singularly perturbed nonlinear elliptic problem: $$-\e^2Δu+V(x)u=f(u),\ u\in H^1(\mathbb{R^N}),$$ where $N\ge 3$ and the nonlinearity $f$ is of critical growth. In this paper, we construct a solution $u_\e$ of the above problem which concentrates at an isolated component of positive local minimum points of $V$ as $\e\to 0$ under certain conditions on $f$. Our result completes the study made in some very recent works in the sense that, in those papers only the subcritical growth was considered
