Superadditivity of Krylov Complexity for Tensor Products

We study Krylov complexity for quantum systems whose Hamiltonians factorise as tensor products. We prove that complexity is superadditive under tensor products, $C_{12}\ge C_1+C_2$, and identify a positive operator that quantifies the resulting excess complexity. The underlying mechanism is made transparent by introducing a Krylov graph representation in which tensor products generate a higher-dimensional lattice whose diagonal shells encode operator growth and binomial path multiplicities. In the continuum limit, Krylov dynamics reduces to diffusion on this graph, with superadditivity arising from geometric broadening across shells. Explicit examples illustrate how deviations from synchronous evolution generate bounded, oscillatory excess complexity.

From Chern-Tenenblat to Jackiw-Teitelboim via sine-Gordon

The study of 2-dimensional surfaces of constant curvature constitutes a beautiful branch of geometry with well-documented ties to the mathematical physics of integrable systems. A lesser known, but equally fascinating, fact is its connection to 2-dimensional gravity; specifically Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity, where the connection manifests through a coordinate choice that roughly speaking re-casts the gravitational field equations as the sine-Gordon equation. In this language many well-known results, such as the JT-gravity black hole and its properties, were understood in terms of sine-Gordon solitons and their properties. In this brief note, we revisit these ideas in the context of some of the recent exciting developments in JT-gravity and, more generally, low-dimensional quantum gravity and speculate on how some of these new ideas may be similarly understood.

Operator Delocalization in Quantum Networks

We investigate the delocalization of operators in non-chaotic quantum systems whose interactions are encoded in an underlying graph or network. In particular, we study how fast operators of different sizes delocalize as the network connectivity is varied. We argue that these delocalization properties are well captured by Krylov complexity and show, numerically, that efficient delocalization of large operators can only happen within sufficiently connected network topologies. Finally, we demonstrate how this can be used to furnish a deeper understanding of the quantum charging advantage of a class of SYK-like quantum batteries.

The Multi-faceted Inverted Harmonic Oscillator: Chaos and Complexity

The harmonic oscillator is the paragon of physical models; conceptually and computationally simple, yet rich enough to teach us about physics on scales that span classical mechanics to quantum field theory. This multifaceted nature extends also to its inverted counterpart, in which the oscillator frequency is analytically continued to pure imaginary values. In this article we probe the inverted harmonic oscillator (IHO) with recently developed quantum chaos diagnostics such as the out-of-time-order correlator (OTOC) and the circuit complexity. In particular, we study the OTOC for the displacement operator of the IHO with and without a non-Gaussian cubic perturbation to explore genuine and quasi scrambling respectively. In addition, we compute the full quantum Lyapunov spectrum for the inverted oscillator, finding a paired structure among the Lyapunov exponents. We also use the Heisenberg group to compute the complexity for the time evolved displacement operator, which displays chaotic behaviour. Finally, we extended our analysis to N-inverted harmonic oscillators to study the behaviour of complexity at the different timescales encoded in dissipation, scrambling and asymptotic regimes.

Chaos and Complexity in Quantum Mechanics

We propose a new diagnostic for quantum chaos. We show that time evolution of complexity for a particular type of target state can provide equivalent information about the classical Lyapunov exponent and scrambling time as out-of-time-order correlators. Moreover, for systems that can be switched from a regular to unstable (chaotic) regime by a tuning of the coupling constant of the interaction Hamiltonian, we find that the complexity defines a new time scale. We interpret this time scale as recording when the system makes the transition from regular to chaotic behaviour.

On-Shell Electric-Magnetic Duality and the Dual Graviton

Using on-shell amplitude methods, we explore 4-dimensional Electric-Magnetic duality and its double copy. We show explicitly that the on-shell scattering amplitudes know about `dual' photons (and dual gravitons), that the off-shell photon propagator double copies to the graviton propagator and that the magnetic part of the propagator is essential for the double copy to hold. We also show that there is an equivalent gravito-magnetic part of the graviton propagator which is essential in giving rise to solutions with either angular momentum or NUT charge. Furthermore, we comment on the so-called Weinberg paradox, which states that scattering amplitudes involving the mixing of electric and magnetic monopoles cannot be Lorentz invariant, and would seem to preclude the existence of the 't Hooft-Polyakov (topological) monopole. We trace this paradox to the magnetic part of the propagator, showing that it can be eliminated if one restricts to proper orthochronous Lorentz transformations. Finally, we compute the fully relativistic cross-section for arbitrary spin dyons using the recently formulated on-shell duality transformation and show that this is always fully Lorentz invariant.

On-Shell Perspectives on the Massless Limit of Massive Supergravity

Massive gravity exhibits a famous discontinuity in its 2-point linearized amplitude for t-channel scattering of gravitational sources, in the $m \to 0$ limit. In essence, the source of this vDVZ discontinuity is in the failure of the zero-helicity mode to decouple in this limit. In [1], we showed how this result could be understood in the context of modern on-shell methods and, in particular, the BCFW construction. In this article, we provide a similar on-shell perspective to the equally interesting but lesser known discontinuity first discovered by Deser, Kay and Stelle in massive supergravity.

Fermionic T-Duality of $AdS_n \times S^n (\times S^n) \times T^m$ using IIA Supergravity

We show that the string backgrounds AdS2 x S2 x T6 and AdSd x Sd x Sd x T{10 - 3d} (d = 2, 3) are self-dual under a series of bosonic and fermionic T-dualities. We do this using the fermionic Buscher rules derived by Berkovits and Maldacena, thus working at the level of the supergravity fields. This allows us to explicitly track the behaviour of the RR fields, from which we see that we need T-duality along some torus directions. For the AdS x S x S cases, which contain cosets of D(2,1;alpha), it is necessary to perform bosonic T-duality along some complexified Killing spinors in one of the spheres.

A Nonabelian Particle-Vortex Duality

We define a nonabelian particle-vortex duality as a $3-$dimensional analogue of the usual $2-$dimensional worldsheet nonabelian T-duality. The transformation is defined in the presence of a global $SU(2)$ symmetry and, although derived from a string theoretic setting, we formulate it generally. We then apply it to so-called "semilocal strings" in an $SU(2)_{G}\times U(1)_{L}$ gauge theory, originally discovered in the context of cosmic string physics.

A nonabelian particle-vortex duality in gauge theories

We define a nonabelian version of particle-vortex duality, by dimensionally extending usual (1+1)-dimensional nonabelian T-duality to (2+1) dimensions. While we will explicitly describe a global $SU(2)$ symmetry, our methods can also be applied to a larger group $G$, by gauging an appropriate subgroup. We will exemplify our duality with matter in both adjoint and fundamental representations by considering a modification of ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory (Seiberg-Witten theory reduced to (2+1) dimensions), and an $SU(2)\times U(1)$ color-flavor locked theory that exhibits nonabelian vortex solutions.

Nonrelativistic limit of the abelianized ABJM model and the ADS/CMT correspondence

We consider the nonrelativistic limit of the abelian reduction of the massive ABJM model proposed in \cite{Mohammed:2012gi}, obtaining a supersymmetric version of the Jackiw-Pi model. The system exhibits an ${\cal N}=2$ Super-Schrödinger symmetry with the Jackiw-Pi vortices emerging as BPS solutions. We find that this $(2+1)$-dimensional abelian field theory is dual to a certain (3+1)-dimensional gravity theory that differs somewhat from previously considered abelian condensed matter stand-ins for the ABJM model. We close by commenting on progress in the top-down realization of the AdS/CMT correspondence in a critical string theory.

Probability Density Functions from the Fisher Information Metric

We show a general relation between the spatially disjoint product of probability density functions and the sum of their Fisher information metric tensors. We then utilise this result to give a method for constructing the probability density functions for an arbitrary Riemannian Fisher information metric tensor. We note further that this construction is extremely unconstrained, depending only on certain continuity properties of the probability density functions and a select symmetry of their domains.

T-Duality of Green-Schwarz Superstrings on AdS(d) x S(d) x M(10-2d)

We verify the self-duality of Green-Schwarz supercoset sigma models on AdS$_d \times S^d $ backgrounds (d=2,3,5) under combined bosonic and fermionic T-dualities without gauge fixing kappa symmetry. We also prove this property for superstrings on AdS$_d \times S^d \times S^d$ (d=2,3) described by supercoset sigma models with the isometries governed by the exceptional Lie supergroups $D(2,1;α)$ (d=2) and $D(2,1;α)\times D(2,1;α)$ (d=3), which requires an additional T-dualisation along one of the spheres. Then, by taking into account the contribution of non-supercoset fermionic modes (up to the second order), we provide evidence for the T-self-duality of the complete type IIA and IIB Green-Schwarz superstring theory on AdS$_d\times S^d \times T^{10-2d}$ (d=2,3) backgrounds with Ramond-Ramond fluxes. Finally, applying the Buscher-like rules to T-dualising supergravity fields, we prove the T-self-duality of the whole class of the AdS$_d\times S^d \times M^{10-2d}$ superbackgrounds with Ramond-Ramond fluxes in the context of supergravity.

The Information Metric on the moduli space of instantons with global symmetries

In this note we revisit Hitchin's prescription \cite{Hitchin} of the Fisher metric as a natural measure on the moduli space of instantons that encodes the space-time symmetries of a classical field theory. Motivated by the idea of the moduli space of supersymmetric instantons as an emergent space in the sense of the gauge/gravity duality, we extend the prescription to encode also global symmetries of the underlying theory. We exemplify our construction with the instanton solution of the $\mathbb{CP}^{N}$ sigma model on $\mathbb{R}^{2}$.

Entanglement entropy of $α$-vacua in de Sitter space

We consider the entanglement entropy of a free massive scalar field in the one parameter family of $α$-vacua in de Sitter space by using a method developed by Maldacena and Pimentel. An $α$-vacuum can be thought of as a state filled with particles from the point of view of the Bunch-Davies vacuum. Of all the $α$-vacua we find that the entanglement entropy takes the minimal value in the Bunch-Davies solution. We also calculate the asymptotic value of the Rényi entropy and find that it increases as $α$ increases. We argue these feature stem from pair condensation within the non-trivial $α$-vacua where the pairs have an intrinsic quantum correlation.

Particle-vortex and Maxwell duality in the $AdS_4\times \mathbb{CP}^3$/ABJM correspondence

We revisit the notion of particle-vortex duality in abelian theories of complex scalar fields coupled to gauge fields, formulating the duality as a transformation at the level of the path integral. This transformation is then made symmetric and cast as a self-duality that maps the original theory into itself with the role of particles and vortices interchanged. After defining the transformation for a pure Chern-Simons gauge theory, we show how to embed it into (a sector of) the $(2+1)-$dimensional ABJM model, and argue that this duality can be understood as being related to 4-dimensional Maxwell duality in the $AdS_{4}\times\mathbb{CP}^{3}$ bulk.

A giant graviton genealogy

In this article we extend the construction of giant gravitons from holomorphic surfaces [arXiv:hep-th/0010206] to the ABJM correspondence. We construct a new class of 1/6-BPS M5-branes wrapping 5-manifolds in S^7/Z_k and supported by a large angular momentum in the orbifold space. These orbifold giant gravitons undergo a supersymmetry enhancement to 1/3-BPS and 1/2-BPS configurations in special cases. The compactification of M-theory on AdS_4 x S^7/Z_k to type IIA superstring theory on AdS_4 x CP^3 then gives rise to another new class of 1/6-BPS D4 and NS5-branes wrapping 4 and 5-manifolds in CP^3. The D4-branes carry a combination of D0-brane charge and angular momentum in the complex projective space, while the NS5-branes are supported only by D0-brane charge. Finally, we present a detailed analysis of a one-parameter family of 1/2-BPS M5-brane orbifold giant gravitons, and their D4 and NS5-brane CP^3 descendants.

Conductivity in the gravity dual to massive ABJM and the membrane paradigm

In this paper we analyze the effect of the massive deformation of the ABJM model on the calculation of conductivity of the dual theory. We show that some of the difficulties presented by the dual geometry, in particular the construction of black holes therein, can be at least partially circumvented by adopting a membrane paradigm-like computation of the conductivity, which requires us to know just the effect of the deformation on the {\it horizon} of a black hole in AdS${}_{4}$. The deformation at the horizon itself is found by first deforming the flat space near the horizon, and then using the corresponding solution near the horizon as initial conditions for the Einstein's equations. We find the same result, showing an increase in conductivity, using two types of membrane paradigm computations.

On abelianizations of the ABJM model and applications to condensed matter

In applications of AdS/CFT to condensed matter systems in 2+1 dimensions, the ABJM model is often used, however the condensed matter models are usually abelian and contain charged fields. We show that a naive reduction of the ABJM model to N=1 does not have the desired features, but we can find an abelian reduction that has most features, and we can also add fundamental fields to the ABJM model to obtain other models with similar properties.

Scattering in AdS(2)/CFT(1) and the BES Phase

We study worldsheet scattering for the type IIA superstring in AdS(2) x S(2) x T(6). Using the Green--Schwarz action to quartic order in fermions we take the near-BMN limit, where as in the AdS(3)/CFT(2) case there are both massive and massless excitations. For the massive excitations we compute all possible tree-level processes, and show that these agree with a truncated version of the exact AdS(5) x S(5) S-matrix. We also compute several S-matrix elements involving massless excitations. At one loop we find that the dressing phase is the same Hernandes-Lopez phase appearing in AdS(5)/CFT(4). We see the same phase when calculating this by semiclassical means using the PSU(1,1|2)/U(1)^2 coset sigma model, for which we can also study the scattering of fermions. This supports the conjecture that the all-loop dressing phase is again the BES phase, rather than a new phase like that seen in AdS(3)/CFT(2).

Abelian-Higgs and Vortices from ABJM: towards a string realization of AdS/CMT

We present ansätze that reduce the mass-deformed ABJM model to gauged Abelian scalar theories, using the fuzzy sphere matrices $G^α$. One such reduction gives a Toda system, for which we find a new type of nonabelian vortex. Another gives the standard Abelian-Higgs model, thereby allowing us to embed all the usual (multi-)vortex solutions of the latter into the ABJM model. By turning off the mass deformation at the level of the reduced model, we can also continuously deform to the massive $ϕ^4$ theory in the massless ABJM case. In this way we can embed the Landau-Ginzburg model into the AdS/CFT correspondence as a consistent truncation of ABJM. In this context, the mass deformation parameter $μ$ and a field VEV $<ϕ>$ act as $g$ and $g_c$ respectively, leading to a well-motivated AdS/CMT construction from string theory. To further this particular point, we propose a simple model for the condensed matter field theory that leads to an approximate description for the ABJM abelianization. Finally, we also find some BPS solutions to the mass-deformed ABJM model with a spacetime interpretation as an M2-brane ending on a spherical M5-brane.

Beyond the Planar Limit in ABJM

In this article we consider gauge theories with a U(N)X U(N) gauge group. We provide, for the first time, a complete set of operators built from scalar fields that are in the bi fundamental of the two groups. Our operators diagonalize the two point function of the free field theory at all orders in 1/N. We then use this basis to investigate non-planar anomalous dimensions in the ABJM theory. We show that the dilatation operator reduces to a set of decoupled harmonic oscillators, signaling integrability in a nonplanar large N limit.

Classical and quantum integrability in AdS(2)/CFT(1)

We investigate the type IIA string on AdS(2)xS(2)xT(6) supported by RR-flux which describes the gravitational side of the AdS(2)/CFT(1) correspondence. While the four-dimensional part AdS(2)xS(2) can be realized as a supercoset, the full superstring has both coset and non-coset excitations, the latter giving rise to massless worldsheet modes, a somewhat novel feature in AdS/CFT. The string is nevertheless known to be integrable at the classical level. In this paper we perform several computations checking aspects of both classical and quantum string integrability. At the classical level we compute energies for the near BMN string and successfully match these against Bethe ansatz predictions. Furthermore, integrability dictates a magnon dispersion relation which we compare with the poles of loop corrected propagators, at both the one and two-loop level. At one loop, where only tadpole diagrams contribute, we find that the bosonic and fermionic contributions sum up to zero. Under the assumption of worldsheet supersymmetry, we then compute the two-loop sunset diagram in the near flat space limit. As in AdS(5)xS(5) we find that the result fits nicely into the sine-square structure of the dispersion relation.

Large N anomalous dimensions for large operators in Leigh-Strassler deformed SYM

We study the large N anomalous dimensions of operators in a Leigh-Strassler deformation of N=4 super Yang-Mills theory. The operators that we study have a bare dimension of order N (so that the large N limit is not captured by planar diagrams) and are AdS/CFT dual to giant gravitons. The diagonalization of the dilatation operator factorizes into two problems. One of these problems is solved using a double coset ansatz. The second problem is equivalent to a set of decoupled harmonic oscillators.

Towards a Realization of the Condensed-Matter/Gravity Correspondence in String Theory via Consistent Abelian Truncation

We present an embedding of the 3-dimensional relativistic Landau-Ginzburg model for condensed matter systems in an $\mathcal{N}=6$, $U(N)\times U(N)$ Chern-Simons-matter theory (the ABJM model) by consistently truncating the latter to an abelian effective field theory encoding the collective dynamics of ${\cal O}(N)$ of the ${\cal O}(N^2)$ modes. In fact, depending on the VEV on one of the ABJM scalars, a mass deformation parameter $μ$ and the Chern-Simons level number $k$, our abelianization prescription allows us to interpolate between the abelian Higgs model with its usual multi-vortex solutions and a $ϕ^4$ theory. We sketch a simple condensed matter model that reproduces all the salient features of the abelianization. In this context, the abelianization can be interpreted as giving a dimensional reduction from four dimensions.

ABJM Dibaryon Spectroscopy

We extend the proposal for a detailed map between wrapped D-branes in Anti-de Sitter space and baryon-like operators in the associated dual conformal field theory provided in hep-th/0202150 to the recently formulated AdS_4 \times CP^3/ABJM correspondence. In this example, the role of the dibaryon operator of the 3-dimensional CFT is played by a D4-brane wrapping a CP^2 \subset CP^3. This topologically stable D-brane in the AdS_4 \times CP^3 is nothing but one-half of the maximal giant graviton on CP^3.

On the Trace-Free Einstein Equations as a Viable Alternative to General Relativity

The quantum field theoretic prediction for the vacuum energy density leads to a value for the effective cosmological constant that is incorrect by between 60 to 120 orders of magnitude. We review an old proposal of replacing Einstein's Field Equations by their trace-free part (the Trace-Free Einstein Equations), together with an independent assumption of energy--momentum conservation by matter fields. While this does not solve the fundamental issue of why the cosmological constant has the value that is observed cosmologically, it is indeed a viable theory that resolves the problem of the discrepancy between the vacuum energy density and the observed value of the cosmological constant. However, one has to check that, as well as preserving the standard cosmological equations, this does not destroy other predictions, such as the junction conditions that underlie the use of standard stellar models. We confirm that no problems arise here: hence, the Trace-Free Einstein Equations are indeed viable for cosmological and astrophysical applications.

The Catenary Revisited: From Newtonian Strings to Superstrings

The dynamics of extended objects, such as strings and membranes, has attracted more attention in the past decades since the fundamental objects introduced in high-energy physics are no longer pointlike. Their motion is generally quite intricate to describe and usually requires the sophisticated tools of Conformal Field Theory, Quantum Field Theory and General Relativity. This article argues that the Newtonian analogy of a catenary with free ends offers a good description of some processes such as gravitational radiation by an accelerated brane.

The giant graviton on AdS_{4} x CP^{3} - another step towards the emergence of geometry

We construct the giant graviton on AdS_{4} x CP^{3} out of a four-brane embedded in and moving on the complex projective space. This configuration is dual to the totally anti-symmetric Schur polynomial operator χ_{R}(A_{1}B_{1}) in the 2+1-dimensional, N = 6 super Chern-Simons ABJM theory. We demonstrate that this BPS solution of the D4-brane action is energetically degenerate with the point graviton solution and initiate a study of its spectrum of small fluctuations. Although the full computation of this spectrum proves to be analytically intractable, by perturbing around a "small'" giant graviton, we find good evidence for a dependence of the spectrum on the size, α_{0}, of the giant. This is a direct result of the changing shape of the worldvolume as it grows in size.

Lessons from giant gravitons on $AdS_{5}\times T^{1,1}$

We implement Mikhailov's holomorphic curve construction to explore various properties of giant gravitons in type IIB string theory on $AdS_{5}\times T^{1,1}$. By coloring the D-brane worldvolume, we are able to show how, in the string theory, the giant graviton factorizes at its maximal size into two dibaryons - topologically stable D-branes wrapping non-contractible cycles in the $T^{1,1}$. This is related to the structure of the symmetry group of the emergent Klebanov-Witten gauge theory being a product - $SU(N) \times SU(N)$ instead of the canonical $SU(N)$. Finally, we complete this study with a systematic and detailed construction of the spectrum of small fluctuations about the giant graviton configuration. Curiously, we find that the fluctuation spectrum depends on the size of the giant. The similarity of the operator structures in the Klebanov-Witten and ABJM theories leads us to believe that the D4-brane giant graviton in type IIA string theory on $AdS_{4}\times \mathbb{CP}^{3}$ factorizes into two $\mathbb{CP}^{2}$ dibaryons in a qualitatively similar way.

Looking for a Matrix model of ABJM

Encouraged by the recent construction of fuzzy sphere solutions in the ABJM theory, we re-analyze the latter from the perspective of a Matrix-like model. In particular, we argue that a vortex solution exhibits properties of a supergraviton, while a kink represents a 2-brane. Other solutions are also consistent with the Matrix-type interpretation. We study vortex scattering and compare with graviton scattering in the massive ABJM background, however our results are inconclusive. We speculate on how to extend our results to construct a Matrix theory of ABJM.

A note on the universality of the Hagedorn behavior of pp-wave strings

Following on from recent studies of string theory on a one-parameter family of integrable deformations of $AdS_{5}\times S^{5}$ proposed by Lunin and Maldacena, we carry out a systematic analysis of the high temperature properties of type IIB strings on the associated pp-wave geometries. In particular, through the computation of the thermal partition function and free energy we find that not only does the theory exhibit a Hagedorn transition in both the $(J,0,0)$ and $(J,J,J)$ class of pp-waves, but that the Hagedorn temperature is insensitive to the deformation suggesting an interesting universality in the high temperature behaviour of the pp-wave string theory. We comment also on the implications of this universality on the confinement/deconfinement transition in the dual $\mathcal{N}=1$ Leigh-Strassler deformation of ${\cal N}=4$ Yang-Mills theory.

Giant Gravitons on Deformed pp-waves

The recently constructed Lunin-Maldacena deformation of $AdS_{5}\times S^{5}$ is known to support two inequivalent Penrose limits that lead to BPS pp-wave geometries. In this note, we construct new giant graviton solutions on these backgrounds. A detailed study of the spectra of small fluctuations about these solutions reveals a remarkably rich structure. In particular, the giants that we contruct fall into two classes, one of which appears to remain stable in the Penrose limit independently of the strength of the deformation. The other class of giants, while more difficult to treat analytically, seems to exhibit a shape deformation not unlike the so-called "squashed giants" seen in the pp-wave with a constant NS $B$-field turned on. Some consideration is also given to the associated giant operators in the BMN limit of the dual ${\cal N}=1$ SYM gauge theory.

Comments on Noncommutative Sigma Models

We review the derivation of a noncommutative version of the nonlinear sigma model on $\CPn$ and it's soliton solutions for finite $θ$ emphasizing the similarities it bears to the GMS scalar field theory. It is also shown that unlike the scalar theory, some care needs to be taken in defining the topological charge of BPS solitons of the theory due to nonvanishing surface terms in the energy functional. Finally it is shown that, like its commutative analogue, the noncommutative $\CPn$-model also exhibits a non-BPS sector. Unlike the commutative case however, there are some surprises in the noncommutative case that merit further study.
