Coupling ModMax theory precursor with scalars, and BIon-type solutions

Recently, the most general theory of electromagnetism invariant under duality and conformal invariance was written, and dubbed ModMax. It arises from a generalization of Born-Infeld (BI) theory by taking the infinite tension limit, $T\rightarrow\infty$. In this note we show that this generalization can be obtained from a brane-like construction, just like BI, and can thus be coupled to scalars in the same way to obtain a DBI-like action. All the BIon and catenoid solutions, and their interpolations, are still solutions of the generalized DBI-like action, suggesting that an interpretation within string theory could be possible. We also show that Rañada's knotted solutions (with nonzero helicities) are still valid, both in the ModMax theory, and in its precursor.

Fluid-electromagnetic helicities and knotted solutions of the fluid-electromagnetic equations

In this paper we consider an Euler fluid coupled to external electromagnetism. We prove that the Hopfion fluid-electromagnetic knot, carrying fluid and electromagnetic (EM) helicities, solves the fluid dynamical equations as well as the Abanov Wiegmann (AW) equations for helicities, which are inspired by the axial-current anomaly of a Dirac fermion. We also find a nontrivial knot solution with truly interacting fluid and electromagnetic fields. The key ingredients of these phenomena are the EM and fluid helicities. An EM dual system, with a magnetically charged fluid, is proposed and the analogs of the AW equations are written down. We consider a fluid coupled to a nonlinear generalizations for electromagnetism. The Hopfions are shown to be solutions of the generalized equations. We write down the formalism of fluids in 2+1 dimensions, and we dimensionally reduce the 3+1 dimensional solutions. We determine the EM knotted solutions, from which we derive the fluid knots, by applying special conformal transformations with imaginary parameters on un-knotted null constant EM fields.

Penrose limit of MNa solution and spin chains in three-dimensional field theories

In three dimensions, a theory with spontaneous breaking of supersymmetry was described holographically by the Maldacena-Nastase (MNa) solution. We revisit the issue of its Penrose limit, and compare the resulting pp wave and its string eigenstates to a sector of the theory on 5-branes reduced on $S^3$, and a spin chain-like system. We obtain many of the features of the pp wave analysis, but a complete matching still eludes us. We suggest possible explanations for the resulting partial mismatch, and compare against other spin chains for 3-dimensional field theories with gravity duals.

Celestial IR divergences in general most-subleading-color gluon and gravity amplitudes

Gluon amplitudes at most-subleading order in the $1/N$ expansion share a remarkable simplicity with graviton amplitudes: collinear divergences are completely absent in both and, as a consequence, their full IR behavior arises from soft gluon/graviton exchange among the external states. In this paper we study the effect of all-loop IR divergences of celestial most-subleading color gluon amplitudes and their similarities with the celestial gravity case. In particular, a simple celestial exponentiation formula for the dipole part can be written. We also analize how this exponentiation is modified by non-dipole contributions. Finally we also show that, in the Regge limit, the soft factor satisfies the Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equation hinting at the possibility that, in this limit, an effective Wess-Zumino-Witten model would describe the dynamics of the infrared sector.

The monopole problem in holographic cosmology

In this letter we clarify that the monopole problem can always be solved in bosonic holographic cosmology, by the analogue of "dilution" in inflation, which is the fact that the {\em electric} current is an irrelevant operator in the dual field theory. We show that not only specific toy models solve the problem, but any purely bosonic member of the phenomenological class, of super-renormalizable, generalized conformal symmetric models.

Holographic cosmology from "dimensional reduction" of ${\cal N}=4$ SYM vs. $AdS_5\times S^5$

We propose a way to obtain holographic cosmology models for 3+1 dimensional cosmologies vs. 3 dimensional field theories from a "dimensional reduction" procedure, obtained by integrating over the time direction, of (modifed) standard holographic duals of 3+1 dimensional field theories. The example of a modified ${\cal N}=4$ SYM vs. $AdS_5\times S^5$ is presented, and in perturbation theory doesn't match observations, though at strong coupling it might. But the proposed mechanism is more general, and it could in principle be applied to other top down holographic models.

Holography for the very early Universe and the classic puzzles of Hot Big Bang cosmology

We show that standard puzzles of hot Big Bang cosmology that motivated the introduction of cosmological inflation, such as the smoothness and horizon problem, the flatness problem and the relic problem are also solved by holographic models for very early universe based on perturbative three dimensional QFT. In the holographic setup, cosmic evolution is mapped to inverse renormalization group (RG) flow of the dual QFT, and the resolution of the puzzles relies on properties of the RG flow.

Quantum gravity and the holographic dark energy cosmology

The holographic dark energy model is obtained from a cosmological constant generated by generic quantum gravity effects giving a minimum length. By contrast, the usual bound for the energy density to be limited by the formation of a black hole simply gives the Friedmann equation. The scale of the current cosmological constant relative to the inflationary scale is an arbitrary parameter characterizing initial conditions, which however can be fixed by introducing a physical principle during inflation, as a function of the number of e-folds and the inflationary scale.

Small field inflation in ${\cal N}=1$ supergravity with a single chiral superfield

We consider "new inflation" inflationary models at small fields, embedded in minimal ${\cal N}=1$ supergravity with a single chiral superfield. Imposing a period of inflation compatible with experiment severely restricts possible models, classified in perturbation theory. If moreover we impose that the field goes to large values and very small potential at the current time, like would be needed for instance for the inflaton being the volume modulus in large extra dimensional scenarios, the possible models are restricted to very contrived superpotentials.

A natural cosmological constant from chameleons

We present a simple model where the effective cosmological constant appears from chameleon scalar fields. For a Kachru-Kallosh-Linde-Trivedi (KKLT)-inspired form of the potential and a particular chameleon coupling to the local density, patches of approximately constant scalar field potential cluster around regions of matter with density above a certain value, generating the effect of a cosmological constant on large scales. This construction addresses both the cosmological constant problem (why $Λ$ is so small, yet nonzero) and the coincidence problem (why $Λ$ is comparable to the matter density now).

A Nonabelian Particle-Vortex Duality

We define a nonabelian particle-vortex duality as a $3-$dimensional analogue of the usual $2-$dimensional worldsheet nonabelian T-duality. The transformation is defined in the presence of a global $SU(2)$ symmetry and, although derived from a string theoretic setting, we formulate it generally. We then apply it to so-called "semilocal strings" in an $SU(2)_{G}\times U(1)_{L}$ gauge theory, originally discovered in the context of cosmic string physics.

A nonabelian particle-vortex duality in gauge theories

We define a nonabelian version of particle-vortex duality, by dimensionally extending usual (1+1)-dimensional nonabelian T-duality to (2+1) dimensions. While we will explicitly describe a global $SU(2)$ symmetry, our methods can also be applied to a larger group $G$, by gauging an appropriate subgroup. We will exemplify our duality with matter in both adjoint and fundamental representations by considering a modification of ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory (Seiberg-Witten theory reduced to (2+1) dimensions), and an $SU(2)\times U(1)$ color-flavor locked theory that exhibits nonabelian vortex solutions.

Abelian reductions of deformed ${\cal N}=4$ SYM

Following the work in \cite{Mohammed:2012gi}, where the massive ABJM model in 2+1 dimensions was shown to have an abelian reduction to the relativistic Landau-Ginzburg, and motivated by the implications for condensed matter through AdS/CFT, we show that a FI deformation of ${\cal N}=4$ SYM in 3+1 dimensions with a mass term can also be reduced to a relativistic Landau-Ginzburg model, with the possibility of coupling it to a real scalar, whereas the simply mass deformed ${\cal N}=4$ SYM reduces only to a massive $ϕ^4$ model (scalar QED) coupled to a real scalar. We study the classical solutions of the model, in particular vortex solutions.

DBI scalar field theory for QGP hydrodynamics

A way to describe the hydrodynamics of the quark-gluon plasma using a DBI action is proposed, based on the model found by Heisenberg for high energy scattering of nucleons. The expanding plasma is described as a shockwave in a DBI model for a real scalar standing in for the pion, and I show that one obtains a fluid description in terms of a relativistic fluid that near the shock is approximately ideal ($η\simeq 0$) and conformal. One can introduce an extra term inside the square root of the DBI action that generates a shear viscosity term in the energy-momentum tensor near the shock, as well as a bulk viscosity, and regulates the behaviour of the energy density at the shock, making it finite. The resulting fluid satisfies the relativistic Navier-Stokes equation with $u^μ, ρ,P,η$ defined in terms of $ϕ$ and its derivatives. One finds a relation between the parameters of the theory and the QGP thermodynamics, $\a/\b^2=η/(sT)$, and by fixing $\a$ and $\b$ from usual (low multiplicity) particle scattering, one finds $T\propto m_π$.

General $f(R)$ and conformal inflation from minimal supergravity plus matter

We embed general $f(R)$ inflationary models in minimal supergravity plus matter, a single chiral superfield $Φ$, with or without another superfield $S$, via a Jordan frame Einstein+scalar description. In particular, inflationary models like a generalized Starobinsky one are analyzed and constraints on them are found. We also embed the related models of conformal inflation, also described as Jordan frame Einstein+scalar models, in particular the conformal inflation from the Higgs model, and analyze the inflationary constraints on them.

Massive ABJM and black hole entropy in the presence of field strength coupling to curvature

Assuming that the near horizon geometry of the black hole solution of the gravity dual to the ABJM model, in the presence of a coupling between the Weyl tensor and the field strength, is $AdS_{2}\times S^{2}$, we compute Sen's entropy function for this theory. By extremizing the entropy function we write a formula for the entropy of the black hole, and then we compute the same entropy using Wald's formula and show that the results are the same. In this way we generalize the calculation of black hole entropy to cases of curvature coupling to the field strength, including at first order, and we also show how to calculate the black hole entropy when the black hole solution is unknown, from just a few simple assumptions about the horizon.

More on Heisenberg's model for high energy nucleon-nucleon scattering

We revisit Heisenberg's model for nucleon-nucleon scattering which admits a saturation of the Froissart bound. We examine its uniqueness, and find that up to certain natural generalizations, it is the only action that saturates the bound. We find that we can extract also sub-leading behaviour for $σ_{\rm tot}(s)$ from it, though that requires a knowledge of the wavefunction solution that is hard to obtain, and a black-disk model allows the calculation of $σ_{elastic}(s)$ as well. The wavefunction solution is analyzed perturbatively, and its source is interpreted. Generalizations to several mesons, addition of vector mesons, and curved space regimes are also found. We discuss the relations between Heisenberg's model and holographic models that are dual to QCD-like theories.

Non-Abelian T-duality for nonrelativistic holographic duals

We find new type II backgrounds with non-relativistic symmetries via non-Abelian T-duality. First we consider geometries with Galilean symmetries in type IIA, which have been identified as non-relativistic generalizations of the ABJM background and massive IIA supergravities. We then consider the non-Abelian T-duality transformation on the backgrounds with Lifshitz symmetry constructed by Donos and Gauntlett. Using gauge/gravity duality we study aspects of the field theory dual to these backgrounds.

Nonrelativistic limit of the abelianized ABJM model and the ADS/CMT correspondence

We consider the nonrelativistic limit of the abelian reduction of the massive ABJM model proposed in \cite{Mohammed:2012gi}, obtaining a supersymmetric version of the Jackiw-Pi model. The system exhibits an ${\cal N}=2$ Super-Schrödinger symmetry with the Jackiw-Pi vortices emerging as BPS solutions. We find that this $(2+1)$-dimensional abelian field theory is dual to a certain (3+1)-dimensional gravity theory that differs somewhat from previously considered abelian condensed matter stand-ins for the ABJM model. We close by commenting on progress in the top-down realization of the AdS/CMT correspondence in a critical string theory.

On $\mathcal{N}=1$ susy backgrounds with $AdS$ factor from nonabelian T-duality

We consider the action of a non-abelian T-duality on backgrounds with an AdS${}_5$ factor in type IIA supergravity, finding a new type IIB background, as well as the non-abelian T-dual of a domain wall solution which has as limits the non-abelian T-dual of $AdS_5\times T^{1,1}$ and the non-abelian T-dual of $AdS_3\times \mathbb{R}^2\times S^2\times S^3$. We explore some consequences of non-abelian T-duality for the dual conformal field theories.

Open strings on D-branes from ABJM

We study open strings on giant gravitons (D-branes on cycles) in the ABJM/$AdS_4\times \mathbb{CP}^3$ correspondence. We find that their energy spectrum has the same form as the one for closed strings, with a nontrivial function of the coupling, avoiding BMN scaling. A similar, Cuntz oscillator, Hamiltonian description for the string (operators at strong coupling) to the $AdS_5$ case is valid also in this case.

Comments on the T-dual of the gravity dual of D5-branes on $S^3$

We consider an abelian T-duality on a deformation of the gravitational solution of \cite{Maldacena2001}, which is the gravity dual of $N_c$ D5-branes wrapping a three-cycle inside a manifold that admits a $G_2$ structure. Performing the T-duality we find $N_c$ D$4$-branes wrapping a two-cycle with non-trivial antisymmetric fields in the NS-NS and RR sector. We study some aspects of its dual field theory and we compare with the original solution.

Conformal inflation from the Higgs

We modify the conformal inflation set-up of \cite{Kallosh:2013hoa}, with a local Weyl invariance, a dynamical Planck scale and an $SO(1,1)$ invariance at high energies, in order to be able to identify the physical scalar with the physical Higgs at low energies, similar to the cyclic Higgs models of \cite{Bars:2013vba}. We obtain a general class of exponentially-corrected potentials that gives a generalized Starobinsky model with an infinite series of $R^p$ corrections, tracing a line in the $(r,n_s)$ plane for CMB fluctuations, with an $r$ that can be made to agree with the recent BICEP2 measurement. Introducing a coupling different from the conformal value, thus breaking the local Weyl symmetry, leads nevertheless to a very strong attractor motion towards the generalized Starobinsky line.

Particle-vortex and Maxwell duality in the $AdS_4\times \mathbb{CP}^3$/ABJM correspondence

We revisit the notion of particle-vortex duality in abelian theories of complex scalar fields coupled to gauge fields, formulating the duality as a transformation at the level of the path integral. This transformation is then made symmetric and cast as a self-duality that maps the original theory into itself with the role of particles and vortices interchanged. After defining the transformation for a pure Chern-Simons gauge theory, we show how to embed it into (a sector of) the $(2+1)-$dimensional ABJM model, and argue that this duality can be understood as being related to 4-dimensional Maxwell duality in the $AdS_{4}\times\mathbb{CP}^{3}$ bulk.

All-loop infrared-divergent behavior of most-subleading-color gauge-theory amplitudes

The infrared singularities of gravitational amplitudes are one-loop exact, in that higher-loop divergences are characterized by the exponential of the one-loop divergence. We show that the contributions to SU(N) gauge-theory amplitudes that are most-subleading in the 1/N expansion are also one-loop exact, provided that the dipole conjecture holds. Possible corrections to the dipole conjecture, beginning at three loops, could violate one-loop-exactness, though would still maintain the absence of collinear divergences. We also demonstrate a relation between L-loop four-point N=8 supergravity and most-subleading-color N=4 SYM amplitudes that holds for the two leading IR divergences, O(1/ε^L) and O(1/ε^{L-1}), but breaks down at O(1/ε^{L-2}).

Chameleonic inflation

We attempt to incorporate inflation into a string theory realization of the chameleon mechanism. Previously, it was found that the volume modulus, stabilized by the supersymmetric potential used by Kachru, Kallosh, Linde and Trivedi (KKLT) and with the right choice of parameters, can generically work as a chameleon. In this paper, we ask whether inflation can be realized in the same model. We find that we need a large extra dimensions set-up, as well as a semi-phenomenological deformation of the Kahler potential in the quantum region. We also find that an additional KKLT term is required so that there are now two pieces to the potential, one which drives inflation in the early universe, and one which is responsible for chameleon screening at late times. These two pieces of the potential are separated by a large flat desert in field space. The scalar field must dynamically traverse this desert between the end of inflation and today, and we find that this can indeed occur under the right conditions.

Conductivity in the gravity dual to massive ABJM and the membrane paradigm

In this paper we analyze the effect of the massive deformation of the ABJM model on the calculation of conductivity of the dual theory. We show that some of the difficulties presented by the dual geometry, in particular the construction of black holes therein, can be at least partially circumvented by adopting a membrane paradigm-like computation of the conductivity, which requires us to know just the effect of the deformation on the {\it horizon} of a black hole in AdS${}_{4}$. The deformation at the horizon itself is found by first deforming the flat space near the horizon, and then using the corresponding solution near the horizon as initial conditions for the Einstein's equations. We find the same result, showing an increase in conductivity, using two types of membrane paradigm computations.

On abelianizations of the ABJM model and applications to condensed matter

In applications of AdS/CFT to condensed matter systems in 2+1 dimensions, the ABJM model is often used, however the condensed matter models are usually abelian and contain charged fields. We show that a naive reduction of the ABJM model to N=1 does not have the desired features, but we can find an abelian reduction that has most features, and we can also add fundamental fields to the ABJM model to obtain other models with similar properties.

Abelian-Higgs and Vortices from ABJM: towards a string realization of AdS/CMT

We present ansätze that reduce the mass-deformed ABJM model to gauged Abelian scalar theories, using the fuzzy sphere matrices $G^α$. One such reduction gives a Toda system, for which we find a new type of nonabelian vortex. Another gives the standard Abelian-Higgs model, thereby allowing us to embed all the usual (multi-)vortex solutions of the latter into the ABJM model. By turning off the mass deformation at the level of the reduced model, we can also continuously deform to the massive $ϕ^4$ theory in the massless ABJM case. In this way we can embed the Landau-Ginzburg model into the AdS/CFT correspondence as a consistent truncation of ABJM. In this context, the mass deformation parameter $μ$ and a field VEV $<ϕ>$ act as $g$ and $g_c$ respectively, leading to a well-motivated AdS/CMT construction from string theory. To further this particular point, we propose a simple model for the condensed matter field theory that leads to an approximate description for the ABJM abelianization. Finally, we also find some BPS solutions to the mass-deformed ABJM model with a spacetime interpretation as an M2-brane ending on a spherical M5-brane.

Eliminating ambiguities for quantum corrections to strings moving in $AdS_4\times \mathbb{CP}^3$

We apply a physical principle, previously used to eliminate ambiguities in quantum corrections to the 2 dimensional kink, to the case of spinning strings moving in $AdS_4\times \mathbb{CP}^3$, thought of as another kind of two dimensional soliton. We find that this eliminates the ambiguities and selects the result compatible with AdS/CFT, providing a solid foundation for one of the previous calculations, which found agreement. The method can be applied to other classical string "solitons".

Introduction to supergravity

These lectures present an introduction to supergravity, and are intended for graduate students with a working knowledge of quantum field theory, including the elementary group theory needed for it, but no prior knowledge of general relativity, supersymmetry or string theory is assumed. I will start by introducing the needed elements of general relativity and supersymmetry. I will then describe the simplest cases of supergravity, ${\cal N}=1$ on-shell in 4 dimensions and ${\cal N}=1$ off-shell in 3 dimensions. I will introduce superspace formalisms in their simplest cases, and apply them to ${\cal N}=1$ in 4 dimensions, after which I will show how to couple to matter using superspace. I will introduce the procedure of KK dimensional reduction and describe general supergravity theories, in particular the unique 11 dimensional supergravity. I will then exemplify the issues of KK dimensional reduction on the only complete example of full nonlinear compactification, on the gravitational space $AdS_7\times S^4$. Finally, I will show how we can use supergravity compactifications together with some string theory information, for realistic embeddings of the Standard Model, via ${\cal N}=1$ supergravity in 4 dimensions.

Towards a Realization of the Condensed-Matter/Gravity Correspondence in String Theory via Consistent Abelian Truncation

We present an embedding of the 3-dimensional relativistic Landau-Ginzburg model for condensed matter systems in an $\mathcal{N}=6$, $U(N)\times U(N)$ Chern-Simons-matter theory (the ABJM model) by consistently truncating the latter to an abelian effective field theory encoding the collective dynamics of ${\cal O}(N)$ of the ${\cal O}(N^2)$ modes. In fact, depending on the VEV on one of the ABJM scalars, a mass deformation parameter $μ$ and the Chern-Simons level number $k$, our abelianization prescription allows us to interpolate between the abelian Higgs model with its usual multi-vortex solutions and a $ϕ^4$ theory. We sketch a simple condensed matter model that reproduces all the salient features of the abelianization. In this context, the abelianization can be interpreted as giving a dimensional reduction from four dimensions.

Towards brane-antibrane inflation in type $II_A$: The holographic MQCD model

We describe type $II_A$ cosmological brane inflation scenarios based on the holographic MQCD model of Aharony et al \cite{Aharony:2010mi}. The scenarios can be related via T-duality to the type $II_B$ KKLMMT model \cite{Kachru:2003sx}. They describe a probe brane configuration of $p$ D4 branes stretching between an $NS5$ and $NS5'$ branes in the holographic background of large $N$ D4 branes. The resulting cosmological models have a Wick-rotated D4-brane metric, with transverse dimensions compactified, and a spiralling brane with flux $p$. In one model, the background has a small nonextremality, and the inflaton is provided by the position of a "sliding" D4-brane, and in the other, the background is supersymmetric, but with a sliding anti-D4-brane. We obtain good and generic inflationary models, though several unknowns remain, in particular about subleading corrections. The usual caveat of volume stabilization generically spoiling slow-roll still applies.

Dimensional reduction of the ABJM model

We dimensionally reduce the ABJM model, obtaining a two-dimensional theory that can be thought of as a 'master action'. This encodes information about both T- and S-duality, i.e. describes fundamental (F1) and D-strings (D1) in 9 and 10 dimensions. The Higgsed theory at large VEV and large k yields D1-brane actions in 9d and 10d, depending on which auxiliary fields are integrated out. For N=1 there is a map to a Green-Schwarz string wrapping a nontrivial circle in C^4/Z_k.

Linear relations between N >= 4 supergravity and subleading-color SYM amplitudes

The IR divergences of supergravity amplitudes are less severe than those of planar SYM amplitudes, and are comparable to those subleading-color SYM amplitudes that are most subleading in the 1/N expansion, namely O(1/epsilon^L) for L-loop amplitudes. We derive linear relations between one- and two-loop four-point amplitudes and one-loop five-point amplitudes of N = 4, 5, and 6 supergravity and the most-subleading-color contributions of the analogous amplitudes of N = 0, 1, and 2 SYM theory, extending earlier results for N = 8 supergravity amplitudes. Our work relies on linear relations between N >= 4 supergravity and planar SYM amplitudes that were recently derived using the double-copy property of gravity, and color-kinematic duality of gauge theories.

Towards a UV Completion for Chameleon Scalar Theories

Chameleons are scalar fields that couple directly to ordinary matter with gravitational strength, but which nevertheless evade the stringent constraints on tests of gravity because of properties they acquire in the presence of high ambient matter density. Chameleon theories were originally constructed in a bottom-up, phenomenological fashion, with potentials and matter couplings designed to hide the scalar from experiments. In this paper, we attempt to embed the chameleon scenario within string compactifications, thus UV completing the scenario. We look for stabilized potentials that can realize a screening mechanism, and we find that the volume modulus rather generically works as a chameleon, and in fact the supersymmetric potential used by Kachru, Kallosh, Linde and Trivedi (KKLT) is an example of this type. We consider all constraints from tests of gravity, allowing us to put experimental constraints on the KKLT parameters.

Twistor and Polytope Interpretations for Subleading Color One-Loop Amplitudes

We use the relation of the one-loop subleading-color amplitudes to the one-loop $n$-point leading color amplitudes in ${\cal N}=4$ SYM, to derive a polytope interpretation for the former in the $MHV$ case, and a representation in momentum twistor space for the general $N^kMHV$ case. These techniques are explored in detail for the 5-point and 6-point amplitudes. We briefly discuss the implications for IR divergences.

Bifundamental Fuzzy 2-Sphere and Fuzzy Killing Spinors

We review our construction of a bifundamental version of the fuzzy 2-sphere and its relation to fuzzy Killing spinors, first obtained in the context of the ABJM membrane model. This is shown to be completely equivalent to the usual (adjoint) fuzzy sphere. We discuss the mathematical details of the bifundamental fuzzy sphere and its field theory expansion in a model-independent way. We also examine how this new formulation affects the twisting of the fields, when comparing the field theory on the fuzzy sphere background with the compactification of the 'deconstructed' (higher dimensional) field theory.

Higgsing M2 to D2 with gravity: N=6 chiral supergravity from topologically gauged ABJM theory

We present the higgsing of three-dimensional N=6 superconformal ABJM type theories coupled to conformal supergravity, so called topologically gauged ABJM theory, thus providing a gravitational extension of previous work on the relation between N M2 and N D2-branes. The resulting N=6 supergravity theory appears at a chiral point similar to that of three-dimensional chiral gravity introduced recently by Li, Song and Strominger, but with the opposite sign for the Ricci scalar term in the lagrangian. We identify the supersymmetry in the broken phase as a particular linear combination of the supersymmetry and special conformal supersymmetry in the original topologically gauged ABJM theory. We also discuss the higgsing procedure in detail paying special attention to the role played by the U(1) factors in the original ABJM model and the U(1) introduced in the topological gauging.

Looking for a Matrix model of ABJM

Encouraged by the recent construction of fuzzy sphere solutions in the ABJM theory, we re-analyze the latter from the perspective of a Matrix-like model. In particular, we argue that a vortex solution exhibits properties of a supergraviton, while a kink represents a 2-brane. Other solutions are also consistent with the Matrix-type interpretation. We study vortex scattering and compare with graviton scattering in the massive ABJM background, however our results are inconclusive. We speculate on how to extend our results to construct a Matrix theory of ABJM.

On KLT and SYM-supergravity relations from 5-point 1-loop amplitudes

We derive a new non-singular tree-level KLT relation for the $n=5$-point amplitudes, with manifest $2(n-2)!$ symmetry, using information from one-loop amplitudes and IR divergences, and speculate how one might extend it to higher n-point functions. We show that the subleading-color ${\cal N}=4$ SYM 5-point amplitude has leading IR divergence of $1/ε$, which is essential for the applications of this paper. We also propose a relation between the subleading-color ${\cal N}=4$ SYM and ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity 1-loop 5-point amplitudes, valid for the IR divergences and possibly for the whole amplitudes, using techniques similar to those used in our derivation of the new KLT relation.

Analyticity for Multi-Regge Limits of the Bern-Dixon-Smirnov Amplitudes

As a consequence of the AdS/CFT correspondence, planar ${\cal N} =4$ super Yang-Mills SU(N) theory is expected to exhibit stringy behavior and multi-Regge asymptotic. In this paper we extend our recent investigation to consider issues of analyticity, a central feature of Regge asymptotics. We contrast flat-space open string theory in the planar limit with the ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory, as represented by the Bern, Dixon and Smirnov \cite{Bern:2005iz} (BDS) conjecture for n-gluon scattering, believed to be exact for $n=4,5$ and modified only by a function of cross-ratios for $n\geq 6$. It is emphasized that multi-Regge factorization should be applied to trajectories with definite signature. A variety of analyticity and factorization constraints realized in flat space string theory are not satisfied by the BDS conjecture, at least when the exponential factors are truncate in the infra-red regulator below $O(ε)$.

Fuzzy Killing Spinors and Supersymmetric D4 action on the Fuzzy 2-sphere from the ABJM Model

Our recent construction arXiv:0903.3966 for the fuzzy 2-sphere in terms of bifundamentals, discovered in the context of the ABJM model, is shown to be explicitly equivalent to the usual (adjoint) fuzzy sphere construction. The matrices $\tilde G^α$ that define it play the role of fuzzy Killing spinors on the 2-sphere, out of which all spherical harmonics are constructed. Starting from the quadratic fluctuation action around these solutions in the mass-deformed ABJM theory, we recover a supersymmetric D4-brane action wrapping a 2-sphere, including fermions. We obtain both the usual D4 action with an unusual x-dependence on the sphere, as well as a twisted version in terms of the usual x-dependence, and contrast our result with the Maldacena-Nunez case of a D5 wrapping an S^2. The twisted and unwisted fields are related by the same matrix $\tilde G^α$.

Planar ${\cal N} =4$ super Yang-Mills SU(N) theory is expected to exhibit stringy behavior, anticipated by the 't Hooft genus expansion and the $AdS/CFT$ correspondence. We examine the Bern-Dixon-Smirnov (BDS) conjecture for $n$-gluon amplitudes in the context of single-Regge and multi-Regge limits and show that these amplitudes have the expected Regge form in the Euclidean region.

Massive IIA String Theory and Matrix Theory Compactification

We propose a Matrix Theory approach to Romans' massive Type IIA supergravity. It is obtained by applying the procedure of Matrix Theory compactifications to Hull's proposal of the Massive Type IIA String Theory as M-Theory on a twisted torus. The resulting Matrix Theory is a super-Yang Mills theory on large N three-branes with a space dependent non-commutativity parameter, which is also independently derived by a T-duality approach. We give evidence showing that the energies of a class of physical excitations of the super-Yang Mills theory show the correct symmetry expected from Massive Type IIA string theory in a lightcone quantization.

The supergravity dual of a theory with dynamical supersymmetry breaking

We study the large $N$ limit of a little string theory that reduces in the IR to U(N) ${\cal N} =1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills with Chern Simons coupling $k$. Witten has shown that this field theory preserves supersymmetry if $k\geq N/2$ and he conjectured that it breaks supersymmetry if $k< N/2$. We find a non-singular solution that describes the $k=N/2$ case, which is confining. We argue that increasing $k$ corresponds to adding branes to this solution, in a way that preserves supersymmetry, while decreasing $k$ corresponds to adding anti-branes, and therefore breaking supersymmetry.

On the nonlinear KK reductions on spheres of supergravity theories

We address some issues related to the construction of general Kaluza-Klein (KK) ansätze for the compactification of a supergravity (sugra) theory on a sphere $S_m$. We first reproduce various ansätze for compactification to 7d from the ansatz for the full nonlinear KK reduction of 11d sugra on $AdS_7\times S_4$. As a side result, we obtain a lagrangian formulation of 7d ${\cal N}=2$ gauged sugra, which so far had only a on-shell formulation, through field equations and constraints. The $AdS_7\times S_4$ ansatz generalizes therefore all previous sphere compactifications to 7d. Then we consider the case when the scalars in the lower dimensional theory are in a coset $Sl(m+1)/SO(m+1)$, and we keep the maximal gauge group $SO(m+1)$. The 11-dimensional sugra truncated on $S_4$ fits precisely the case under consideration, and serves as a model for our construction. We find that the metric ansatz has a universal expression, with the internal space deformed by the scalar fluctuations to a conformally rescaled ellipsoid. We also find the ansatz for the dependence of the antisymmetric tensor on the scalars. We comment on the fermionic ansatz, which will contain a matrix $U$ interpolating between the spinorial $SO(m+1)$ indices of the spherical harmonics and the $R$-symmetry indices of the fermionic fields in the lower dimensional sugra theory. We derive general conditions which the matrix $U$ has to satisfy and we give a formula for the vielbein in terms of $U$. As an application of our methods we obtain the full ansatz for the metric and vielbein for 10d sugra on $AdS_5\times S_5$ (with no restriction on any fields).
