A new look at Thomas-Fermi Theory

In this short note we argue that Thomas-Fermi Theory the simplest of all density functional theories, although failing to explain features such as binding or stability of negative ions, is surprisingly accurate in estimating sizes of atoms. We give both numerical, experimental and rigorous mathematical evidence for this claim. Motivated by this we formulate two new mathematical conjectures on the exactness of Thomas-Fermi Theory.

Proof of the Wehrl-type Entropy Conjecture for Symmmetric SU(N) Coherent States

The Wehrl entropy conjecture for coherent (highest weight) states in representations of the Heisenberg group, which was proved in 1978 and recently extended by us to the group $SU(2)$, is further extended here to symmetric representations of the groups $SU(N)$ for all $N$. This result gives further evidence for our conjecture that highest weight states minimize group integrals of certain concave functions for a large class of Lie groups and their representations.

Diagonalization of bosonic quadratic Hamiltonians by Bogoliubov transformations

We provide general conditions for which bosonic quadratic Hamiltonians on Fock spaces can be diagonalized by Bogoliubov transformations. Our results cover the case when quantum systems have infinite degrees of freedom and the associated one-body kinetic and paring operators are unbounded. Our sufficient conditions are optimal in the sense that they become necessary when the relevant one-body operators commute.

Microscopic Derivation of the Ginzburg-Landau Model

We present a summary of our recent rigorous derivation of the celebrated Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory, starting from the microscopic Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) model. Close to the critical temperature, GL arises as an effective theory on the macroscopic scale. The relevant scaling limit is semiclassical in nature, and semiclassical analysis, with minimal regularity assumptions, plays an important part in our proof.

Bogoliubov spectrum of interacting Bose gases

We study the large-N limit of a system of N bosons interacting with a potential of intensity 1/N. When the ground state energy is to the first order given by Hartree's theory, we study the next order, predicted by Bogoliubov's theory. We show the convergence of the lower eigenvalues and eigenfunctions towards that of the Bogoliubov Hamiltonian (up to a convenient unitary transform). We also prove the convergence of the free energy when the system is sufficiently trapped. Our results are valid in an abstract setting, our main assumptions being that the Hartree ground state is unique and non-degenerate, and that there is complete Bose-Einstein condensation on this state. Using our method we then treat two applications: atoms with ''bosonic'' electrons on one hand, and trapped 2D and 3D Coulomb gases on the other hand.

Existence of Travelling Wave Solutions to the Maxwell-Pauli and Maxwell-Schrödinger Systems

We study two mathematical descriptions of a charged particle interacting with it's self-generated electromagnetic field. The first model is the one-body Maxwell-Schrödinger system where the interaction of the spin with the magnetic field is neglected and the second model is the related one-body Maxwell-Pauli system where the spin-field interaction is included. We prove that there exist travelling wave solutions to both of these systems provided that the speed $|v|$ of the wave is not too large. Moreover, we observe that the energies of these solutions behave like $\frac{mv^2}{2}$ for small velocities of the particle, which may be interpreted as saying that the effective mass of the particle is the same as it's bare mass.

Local exclusion principle for identical particles obeying intermediate and fractional statistics

A local exclusion principle is observed for identical particles obeying intermediate/fractional exchange statistics in one and two dimensions, leading to bounds for the kinetic energy in terms of the density. This has implications for models of Lieb-Liniger and Calogero-Sutherland type, and implies a non-trivial lower bound for the energy of the anyon gas whenever the statistics parameter is an odd numerator fraction. We discuss whether this is actually a necessary requirement.

The external field dependence of the BCS critical temperature

We consider the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer free energy functional for particles interacting via a two-body potential on a microscopic scale and in the presence of weak external fields varying on a macroscopic scale. We study the influence of the external fields on the critical temperature. We show that in the limit where the ratio between the microscopic and macroscopic scale tends to zero, the next to leading order of the critical temperature is determined by the lowest eigenvalue of the linearization of the Ginzburg-Landau equation.

Hardy and Lieb-Thirring inequalities for anyons

We consider the many-particle quantum mechanics of anyons, i.e. identical particles in two space dimensions with a continuous statistics parameter $α\in [0,1]$ ranging from bosons ($α=0$) to fermions ($α=1$). We prove a (magnetic) Hardy inequality for anyons, which in the case that $α$ is an odd numerator fraction implies a local exclusion principle for the kinetic energy of such anyons. From this result, and motivated by Dyson and Lenard's original approach to the stability of fermionic matter in three dimensions, we prove a Lieb-Thirring inequality for these types of anyons.

Local exclusion and Lieb-Thirring inequalities for intermediate and fractional statistics

In one and two spatial dimensions there is a logical possibility for identical quantum particles different from bosons and fermions, obeying intermediate or fractional (anyon) statistics. We consider applications of a recent Lieb-Thirring inequality for anyons in two dimensions, and derive new Lieb-Thirring inequalities for intermediate statistics in one dimension with implications for models of Lieb-Liniger and Calogero-Sutherland type. These inequalities follow from a local form of the exclusion principle valid for such generalized exchange statistics.

Proof of an entropy conjecture for Bloch coherent spin states and its generalizations

Wehrl used Glauber coherent states to define a map from quantum density matrices to classical phase space densities and conjectured that for Glauber coherent states the mininimum classical entropy would occur for density matrices equal to projectors onto coherent states. This was proved by Lieb in 1978 who also extended the conjecture to Bloch SU(2) spin-coherent states for every angular momentum $J$. This conjecture is proved here. We also recall our 1991 extension of the Wehrl map to a quantum channel from $J$ to $K=J+1/2, J+1, ...$, with $K=\infty$ corresponding to the Wehrl map to classical densities. For each $J$ and $J<K\leq \infty$ we show that the minimal output entropy for these channels occurs for a $J$ coherent state. We also show that coherent states both Glauber and Bloch minimize any concave functional, not just entropy.

Relativistic Scott correction in self-generated magnetic fields

We consider a large neutral molecule with total nuclear charge $Z$ in a model with self-generated classical magnetic field and where the kinetic energy of the electrons is treated relativistically. To ensure stability, we assume that $Z α< 2/π$, where $α$ denotes the fine structure constant. We are interested in the ground state energy in the simultaneous limit $Z \rightarrow \infty$, $α\rightarrow 0$ such that $κ=Z α$ is fixed. The leading term in the energy asymptotics is independent of $κ$, it is given by the Thomas-Fermi energy of order $Z^{7/3}$ and it is unchanged by including the self-generated magnetic field. We prove the first correction term to this energy, the so-called Scott correction of the form $S(αZ) Z^2$. The current paper extends the result of \cite{SSS} on the Scott correction for relativistic molecules to include a self-generated magnetic field. Furthermore, we show that the corresponding Scott correction function $S$, first identified in \cite{SSS}, is unchanged by including a magnetic field. We also prove new Lieb-Thirring inequalities for the relativistic kinetic energy with magnetic fields.

Asymptotics for Two-dimensional Atoms

We prove that the ground state energy of an atom confined to two dimensions with an infinitely heavy nucleus of charge $Z>0$ and $N$ quantum electrons of charge -1 is $E(N,Z)=-{1/2}Z^2\ln Z+(E^{\TF}(λ)+{1/2}c^{\rm H})Z^2+o(Z^2)$ when $Z\to \infty$ and $N/Z\to λ$, where $E^{\TF}(λ)$ is given by a Thomas-Fermi type variational problem and $c^{\rm H}\approx -2.2339$ is an explicit constant. We also show that the radius of a two-dimensional neutral atom is unbounded when $Z\to \infty$, which is contrary to the expected behavior of three-dimensional atoms.

On the minimization of Hamiltonians over pure Gaussian states

A Hamiltonian defined as a polynomial in creation and annihilation operators is considered. After a minimization of its expectation value over pure Gaussian states, the Hamiltonian is Wick-ordered in creation and annihillation operators adapted to the minimizing state. It is shown that this procedure eliminates from the Hamiltonian terms of degree 1 and 2 that do not preserve the particle number, and leaves only terms that can be interpreted as quasiparticles excitations. We propose to call this fact Beliaev's Theorem, since to our knowledge it was mentioned for the first time in a paper by Beliaev from 1959.

Scott correction for large atoms and molecules in a self-generated magnetic field

We consider a large neutral molecule with total nuclear charge $Z$ in non-relativistic quantum mechanics with a self-generated classical electromagnetic field. To ensure stability, we assume that $Z\al^2\le κ_0$ for a sufficiently small $κ_0$, where $\al$ denotes the fine structure constant. We show that, in the simultaneous limit $Z\to\infty$, $\al\to 0$ such that $κ=Z\al^2$ is fixed, the ground state energy of the system is given by a two term expansion $c_1Z^{7/3} + c_2(κ) Z^2 + o(Z^2)$. The leading term is given by the non-magnetic Thomas-Fermi theory. Our result shows that the magnetic field affects only the second (so-called Scott) term in the expansion.

Second order semiclassics with self-generated magnetic fields

We consider the semiclassical asymptotics of the sum of negative eigenvalues of the three-dimensional Pauli operator with an external potential and a self-generated magnetic field $B$. We also add the field energy $β\int B^2$ and we minimize over all magnetic fields. The parameter $β$ effectively determines the strength of the field. We consider the weak field regime with $βh^{2}\ge {const}>0$, where $h$ is the semiclassical parameter. For smooth potentials we prove that the semiclassical asymptotics of the total energy is given by the non-magnetic Weyl term to leading order with an error bound that is smaller by a factor $h^{1+\e}$, i.e. the subleading term vanishes. However, for potentials with a Coulomb singularity the subleading term does not vanish due to the non-semiclassical effect of the singularity. Combined with a multiscale technique, this refined estimate is used in the companion paper \cite{EFS3} to prove the second order Scott correction to the ground state energy of large atoms and molecules.

Stability and semiclassics in self-generated fields

We consider non-interacting particles subject to a fixed external potential $V$ and a self-generated magnetic field $B$. The total energy includes the field energy $β\int B^2$ and we minimize over all particle states and magnetic fields. In the case of spin-1/2 particles this minimization leads to the coupled Maxwell-Pauli system. The parameter $β$ tunes the coupling strength between the field and the particles and it effectively determines the strength of the field. We investigate the stability and the semiclassical asymptotics, $h\to0$, of the total ground state energy $E(β, h, V)$. The relevant parameter measuring the field strength in the semiclassical limit is $κ=βh$. We are not able to give the exact leading order semiclassical asymptotics uniformly in $κ$ or even for fixed $κ$. We do however give upper and lower bounds on $E$ with almost matching dependence on $κ$. In the simultaneous limit $h\to0$ and $κ\to\infty$ we show that the standard non-magnetic Weyl asymptotics holds. The same result also holds for the spinless case, i.e. where the Pauli operator is replaced by the Schrödinger operator.

Ground state energy of large atoms in a self-generated magnetic field

We consider a large atom with nuclear charge $Z$ described by non-relativistic quantum mechanics with classical or quantized electromagnetic field. We prove that the absolute ground state energy, allowing for minimizing over all possible self-generated electromagnetic fields, is given by the non-magnetic Thomas-Fermi theory to leading order in the simultaneous $Z\to \infty$, $\al\to 0$ limit if $Z\al^2\leq κ$ for some universal $κ$, where $\al$ is the fine structure constant.

The relativistic Scott correction for atoms and molecules

We prove the first correction to the leading Thomas-Fermi energy for the ground state energy of atoms and molecules in a model where the kinetic energy of the electrons is treated relativistically. The leading Thomas-Fermi energy, established in [Sorensen], as well as the correction given here are of semi-classical nature. Our result on atoms and molecules is proved from a general semi-classical estimate for relativistic operators with potentials with Coulomb-like singularities. This semi-classical estimate is obtained using the coherent state calculus introduced in [Solovej-Spitzer]. The paper contains a unified treatment of the relativistic as well as the non-relativistic case.

The kernel of Dirac operators on $§^3$ and $\R^3$

In this paper we describe an intrinsically geometric way of producing magnetic fields on $§^3$ and $\R^3$ for which the corresponding Dirac operators have a non-trivial kernel. In many cases we are able to compute the dimension of the kernel. In particular we can give examples where the kernel has any given dimension. This generalizes the examples of Loss and Yau (Commun. Math. Phys. 104 (1986) 283-290).
