Hypergraph States in SU(N)1, N odd prime, Chern-Simons Theory

Graph states and hypergraph states can be constructed from products of basic operations that appear in SU(N)1. The level-rank dual of a theorem of Salton, Swingle, and Walter implies that these operations can be prepared topologically in the n-torus Hilbert space of Chern-Simons theory for N neq 5 mod 4. For SU(N)1, N = 5 mod 4, only stabilizer states can be prepared on the n-torus Hilbert space, which restricts the construction to graph states.

Holographic Mutual Information at small separations

The holographic mutual information for the small separation of two circles and two strips in 2+1 dimensional space-time is considered based on the known exact minimal surfaces spanning the boundaries on AdS4. The results suggest a universality for the leading term in the short-distance expansion of holographic mutual information. A conjecture for a similar result for d > 2 is also presented, as well as comments about the analogous expansion in conformal field theory.

Large distance expansion of Mutual Information for disjoint disks in a free scalar theory

We compute the next-to-leading order term in the long-distance expansion of the mutual information for free scalars in three space-time dimensions. The geometry considered is two disjoint disks separated by a distance $r$ between their centers. No evidence for non-analyticity in the Rényi parameter $n$ for the continuation $n \rightarrow 1$ in the next-to-leading order term is found.

Rényi Entropy for a $\bf 2d$ CFT with a gauge field: $\bf \widehat{\rm SU}(N)_1$ WZW theory on a branched torus

The Rényi entropy for the $\widehat{\rm SU}(N)_1$ WZW model as described by $N$ free fermions coupled to a $U(1)$ constraint field is computed on an $n$-sheeted branched torus. The boundary condition of the harmonic component of the gauge field on the homology cycles of the genus $g$ Riemann surface is central to the final result. This calculation is complementary to that of arXiv:$1510.05993$, which presents the bose side of the bose-fermi equivalence.

Topological Rényi and Entanglement Entropy for a 2d q-deformed $U(N)$ Yang-Mills theory and its Chern-Simons dual

Rényi and entanglement entropies are constructed for 2d q-deformed topological Yang-Mills theories with gauge group $U(N)$, as well as the dual 3d Chern-Simons (CS) theory on Seifert manifolds. When $q=\exp[2πi/(N+K)]$, and $K$ is odd, the topological Rényi entropy and Wilson line observables of the CS theory can be expressed in terms of the modular transformation matrices of the WZW theory, $\rm{\hat{U}(N)}_{K,N(K+N)}$. If both $K$ and $N$ are odd, there is a level-rank duality of the 2d qYM theory and of the associated CS theory, as well as that of the Rényi and entanglement entropies, and Wilson line observables.

The a-theorem for the four-dimensional gauged vector model

The discussion of renormalization group flows in four-dimensional conformal field theories has recently focused on the a-anomaly. It has recently been shown that there is a monotonic decreasing function which interpolates between the ultraviolet and infrared fixed points such that Δa = a_UV - a_IR > 0. The analysis has been extended to weakly relevant and marginal deformations, though there are few explicit examples involving interacting theories. In this paper we examine the a-theorem in the context of the gauged vector model which couples the usual vector model to the Banks-Zaks model. We consider the model to leading order in the 1/N expansion, all orders in the coupling constant λ, and to second order in g^2. The model has both an IR and UV fixed point, and satisfies Δa > 0.

The a-theorem for the four-dimensional vector model

The discussion of renormalization group flows in four-dimensional conformal field theories has recently focused on the $a$-anomaly. It has been shown that there is a monotonic decreasing function which interpolates between the ultraviolet and infrared fixed points such that $Δa=a_{UV}-a_{IR}>0$. In that context Komargodski and Schwimmer showed that $Δa$ could be studied by means of dilaton-dilaton scattering. In this paper we examine the $a$-theorem using these methods for a four-dimensional interacting theory: the O(N) vector model, considered to leading order in the 1/N expansion and all orders in the coupling constant $λ$.

All-loop infrared-divergent behavior of most-subleading-color gauge-theory amplitudes

The infrared singularities of gravitational amplitudes are one-loop exact, in that higher-loop divergences are characterized by the exponential of the one-loop divergence. We show that the contributions to SU(N) gauge-theory amplitudes that are most-subleading in the 1/N expansion are also one-loop exact, provided that the dipole conjecture holds. Possible corrections to the dipole conjecture, beginning at three loops, could violate one-loop-exactness, though would still maintain the absence of collinear divergences. We also demonstrate a relation between L-loop four-point N=8 supergravity and most-subleading-color N=4 SYM amplitudes that holds for the two leading IR divergences, O(1/ε^L) and O(1/ε^{L-1}), but breaks down at O(1/ε^{L-2}).

Eikonal methods applied to gravitational scattering amplitudes

We apply factorization and eikonal methods from gauge theories to scattering amplitudes in gravity. We hypothesize that these amplitudes factor into an IR-divergent soft function and an IR-finite hard function, with the former given by the expectation value of a product of gravitational Wilson line operators. Using this approach, we show that the IR-divergent part of the n-graviton scattering amplitude is given by the exponential of the one-loop IR divergence, as originally discovered by Weinberg, with no additional subleading IR-divergent contributions in dimensional regularization.

The Multi-Regge limit of NMHV Amplitudes in N=4 SYM Theory

We consider the multi-Regge limit for N=4 SYM NMHV leading color amplitudes in two different formulations: the BFKL formalism for multi-Regge amplitudes in leading logarithm approximation, and superconformal N=4 SYM amplitudes. It is shown that the two approaches agree to two-loops for the 2->4 and 3->3 six-point amplitudes. Predictions are made for the multi-Regge limit of three loop 2->4 and 3->3 NMHV amplitudes, as well as a particular sub-set of two loop 2 ->2 +n N^kMHV amplitudes in the multi-Regge limit in the leading logarithm approximation from the BFKL point of view.

Linear relations between N >= 4 supergravity and subleading-color SYM amplitudes

The IR divergences of supergravity amplitudes are less severe than those of planar SYM amplitudes, and are comparable to those subleading-color SYM amplitudes that are most subleading in the 1/N expansion, namely O(1/epsilon^L) for L-loop amplitudes. We derive linear relations between one- and two-loop four-point amplitudes and one-loop five-point amplitudes of N = 4, 5, and 6 supergravity and the most-subleading-color contributions of the analogous amplitudes of N = 0, 1, and 2 SYM theory, extending earlier results for N = 8 supergravity amplitudes. Our work relies on linear relations between N >= 4 supergravity and planar SYM amplitudes that were recently derived using the double-copy property of gravity, and color-kinematic duality of gauge theories.

Twistor and Polytope Interpretations for Subleading Color One-Loop Amplitudes

We use the relation of the one-loop subleading-color amplitudes to the one-loop $n$-point leading color amplitudes in ${\cal N}=4$ SYM, to derive a polytope interpretation for the former in the $MHV$ case, and a representation in momentum twistor space for the general $N^kMHV$ case. These techniques are explored in detail for the 5-point and 6-point amplitudes. We briefly discuss the implications for IR divergences.

Higgs-regularized three-loop four-gluon amplitude in N=4 SYM: exponentiation and Regge limits

We compute the three-loop contribution to the N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills planar four-gluon amplitude using the recently-proposed Higgs IR regulator of Alday, Henn, Plefka, and Schuster. In particular, we test the proposed exponential ansatz for the four-gluon amplitude that is the analog of the BDS ansatz in dimensional regularization. By evaluating our results at a number of kinematic points, and also in several kinematic limits, we establish the validity of this ansatz at the three-loop level. We also examine the Regge limit of the planar four-gluon amplitude using several different IR regulators: dimensional regularization, Higgs regularization, and a cutoff regularization. In the latter two schemes, it is shown that the leading logarithmic (LL) behavior of the amplitudes, and therefore the lowest-order approximation to the gluon Regge trajectory, can be correctly obtained from the ladder approximation of the sum of diagrams. In dimensional regularization, on the other hand, there is no single dominant set of diagrams in the LL approximation. We also compute the NLL and NNLL behavior of the L-loop ladder diagram using Higgs regularization.

More loops and legs in Higgs-regulated N=4 SYM amplitudes

We extend the analysis of Higgs-regulated planar amplitudes of N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory to four loops for the four-gluon amplitude and to two loops for the five-gluon amplitude. Our calculations are consistent with a proposed all-loop ansatz for planar MHV n-gluon amplitudes that is the analog of the BDS ansatz in dimensional regularization. In all cases considered, we have verified that the IR-finite parts of the logarithm of the amplitudes have the same dependence on kinematic variables as the corresponding functions in dimensionally-regulated amplitudes (up to overall additive constants, which we determine). We also study various Regge limits of N=4 SYM planar n-gluon amplitudes. Euclidean Regge limits of Higgs-regulated n \geq 4 amplitudes yield results similar in form to those found using dimensional regularization, but with different expressions for the gluon trajectory and Regge vertices resulting from the different regulator scheme. We also show that the Regge limit of the four-gluon amplitude is dominated at next-to-leading-log order by vertical ladder diagrams together with the class of vertical ladder diagrams with a single H-shaped insertion.

On KLT and SYM-supergravity relations from 5-point 1-loop amplitudes

We derive a new non-singular tree-level KLT relation for the $n=5$-point amplitudes, with manifest $2(n-2)!$ symmetry, using information from one-loop amplitudes and IR divergences, and speculate how one might extend it to higher n-point functions. We show that the subleading-color ${\cal N}=4$ SYM 5-point amplitude has leading IR divergence of $1/ε$, which is essential for the applications of this paper. We also propose a relation between the subleading-color ${\cal N}=4$ SYM and ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity 1-loop 5-point amplitudes, valid for the IR divergences and possibly for the whole amplitudes, using techniques similar to those used in our derivation of the new KLT relation.

Analyticity for Multi-Regge Limits of the Bern-Dixon-Smirnov Amplitudes

As a consequence of the AdS/CFT correspondence, planar ${\cal N} =4$ super Yang-Mills SU(N) theory is expected to exhibit stringy behavior and multi-Regge asymptotic. In this paper we extend our recent investigation to consider issues of analyticity, a central feature of Regge asymptotics. We contrast flat-space open string theory in the planar limit with the ${\cal N}=4$ super Yang-Mills theory, as represented by the Bern, Dixon and Smirnov \cite{Bern:2005iz} (BDS) conjecture for n-gluon scattering, believed to be exact for $n=4,5$ and modified only by a function of cross-ratios for $n\geq 6$. It is emphasized that multi-Regge factorization should be applied to trajectories with definite signature. A variety of analyticity and factorization constraints realized in flat space string theory are not satisfied by the BDS conjecture, at least when the exponential factors are truncate in the infra-red regulator below $O(ε)$.

Implications of multi-Regge limits for the Bern-Dixon-Smirnov conjecture

Planar ${\cal N} =4$ super Yang-Mills SU(N) theory is expected to exhibit stringy behavior, anticipated by the 't Hooft genus expansion and the $AdS/CFT$ correspondence. We examine the Bern-Dixon-Smirnov (BDS) conjecture for $n$-gluon amplitudes in the context of single-Regge and multi-Regge limits and show that these amplitudes have the expected Regge form in the Euclidean region.

IR divergences and Regge limits of subleading-color contributions to the four-gluon amplitude in N=4 SYM Theory

We derive a compact all-loop-order expression for the IR-divergent part of the N=4 SYM four-gluon amplitude, which includes both planar and all subleading-color contributions, based on the assumption that the higher-loop soft anomalous dimension matrices are proportional to the one-loop soft anomalous dimension matrix, as has been recently conjectured. We also consider the Regge limit of the four-gluon amplitude, and we present evidence that the leading logarithmic growth of the subleading-color amplitudes is less severe than that of the planar amplitudes. We examine possible 1/N^2 corrections to the gluon Regge trajectory, previously obtained in the planar limit from the BDS ansatz. The double-trace amplitudes have Regge behavior as well, with a nonsense-choosing Regge trajectory and a Regge cut which first emerges at three loops.

Level-rank duality of the U(N) WZW model, Chern-Simons theory, and 2d qYM theory

We study the WZW, Chern-Simons, and 2d qYM theories with gauge group U(N). The U(N) WZW model is only well-defined for odd level K, and this model is shown to exhibit level-rank duality in a much simpler form than that for SU(N). The U(N) Chern-Simons theory on Seifert manifolds exhibits a similar duality, distinct from the level-rank duality of SU(N) Chern-Simons theory on S^3. When q = e^{2 pi i/(N+K)}, the observables of the 2d U(N) qYM theory can be expressed as a sum over a finite subset of U(N) representations. When N and K are odd, the qYM theory exhibits N <--> K duality, provided q = e^{2 pi i/(N+K)} and theta = 0 mod 2 pi /(N+K).

Reggeization of N=8 Supergravity and N=4 Yang-Mills Theory II

The loop expansion for the n-point functions of N=4 Yang-Mills theory and N=8 supergravity can be formulated as the loop expansion of scalar field theory with an infinite subclass being the ladder diagrams. We consider the sum of ladder diagrams for gluon-gluon and graviton-graviton scattering in the Regge limit. The reggeization of the gluon and the graviton is discussed in this context and that of hep-th/0701217. If the Bern, Dixon, Smirnov conjecture for planar gluon-gluon scattering is correct, then the ladder sum for SU(N) gauge theory at large N, correctly gives the Regge limit, with Regge trajectory function proportional to the cusp anomalous dimension. In graviton-graviton scattering it is argued that the graviton lies on a Regge trajectory. Regge cuts are also present due to infinite sums of non-planar graphs. The multiple exchange of Regge poles in non-planar graphs can give a countable infinite number of moving Regge cuts which accumulate near s=0. It is conjectured that this may be related to the infinite number of non-perturbative massless states which remain in the limit discussed by Green, Ooguri and Schwarz.

Confinement/Deconfinement Transition of Large N Gauge Theories with N_f Fundamentals: N_f/N Finite

We consider large N zero-coupling d-dimensional U(N) gauge theories, with N_f matter fields in the fundamental representation on a compact spatial manifold S^{d-1} x time, with N_f/N finite. The Gauss' law constraint induces interactions among the fields, in spite of the zero-coupling. This class of theories undergo a 3rd order deconfinement phase transition at a temperature T_c proportional to the inverse length scale of the compact manifold. The low-temperature phase has a free-energy of {\cal O} (N^2_f), interpreted as that of a gas of (color singlet) mesons and glueballs. The high-temperature (deconfinement) phase has a free energy of order N^2 f (N_f/N, T), which is interpreted as that of a gas of gluons and of fundamental and anti-fundamental matter states. This suggests the existence of a dual string theory, and a transition to a black hole at high temperature.

pp-wave limits and orientifolds

We study the pp-wave limits of various elliptic models with orientifold planes and D7-branes, as well as the pp-wave limit of an orientifold of adS_5 x T^{11}. Many of the limits contain both open and closed strings. We also present pp-wave limits of theories which give rise to a compact null direction and contain open strings. Maps between the string theory states and gauge theory operators are proposed.

Universal Aspects of Two-Dimensional Yang-Mills Theory at Large N

We show that the large N partition functions and Wilson loop observables of two-dimensional Yang-Mills theories admit a universal functional form irrespective of the gauge group. We demonstrate that U(N) QCD_2 undergoes a large N, third-order phase transition on the projective plane at an area-coupling product of π^2/2. We use this as a lemma to provide a direct transcription of the partition functions and phase portraits of Yang-Mills theory from the U(N) on RP^2 at large N to the other classical Lie groups on S^2. We compute the expectation value of the Wilson loops in the fundamental representation for SO(N) and Sp(N) on the two sphere. Finally we compare the strong- and weak-coupling limit of these expressions with those found elswhere in the literature.

Concerning the Double Scaling Limit in the $O(N)$ Vector Model in Four-Dimensions

The 1/N expansion for the O(N) vector model in four dimensions is reconsidered. It is emphasized that the effective potential for this model becomes everywhere complex just at the critical point, which signals an unstable vacuum. Thus a critical O(N) vector model cannot be consistently defined in the 1/N expansion for four-dimensions, which makes the existence of a double-scaling limit for this theory doubtful.
