The Nakayama functor and its completion for Gorenstein algebras

Duality properties are studied for a Gorenstein algebra that is finite and projective over its center. Using the homotopy category of injective modules, it is proved that there is a local duality theorem for the subcategory of acyclic complexes of such an algebra, akin to the local duality theorems of Grothendieck and Serre in the context of commutative algebra and algebraic geometry. A key ingredient is the Nakayama functor on the bounded derived category of a Gorenstein algebra, and its extension to the full homotopy category of injective modules.

The spectrum of a well-generated tensor triangulated category

For a tensor triangulated category and any regular cardinal $α$ we study the frame of $α$-localizing tensor ideals and its associated space of points. For a well-generated category and its frame of localizing tensor ideals we provide conditions such that the associated space is obtained by refining the topology of the corresponding space for the triangulated subcategory of $α$-compact objects. This is illustrated by several known examples for $α=\aleph_0$, and new spaces arise for $α>\aleph_0$.

Rank varieties and $π$-points for elementary supergroup schemes

We develop a support theory for elementary supergroup schemes, over a field of positive characteristic $p\ge 3$, starting with a definition of a $π$-point generalising cyclic shifted subgroups of Carlson for elementary abelian groups and $π$-points of Friedlander and Pevtsova for finite group schemes. These are defined in terms of maps from the graded algebra $k[t,τ]/(t^p-τ^2)$, where $t$ has even degree and $τ$ has odd degree. The strength of the theory is demonstrated by classifying the parity change invariant localising subcategories of the stable module category of an elementary supergroup scheme.

Auslander-Reiten duality for Grothendieck abelian categories

Auslander-Reiten duality for module categories is generalised to Grothendieck abelian categories that have a sufficient supply of finitely presented objects. It is shown that Auslander-Reiten duality amounts to the fact that the functor Ext^1(C,-) into modules over the endomorphism ring of C admits a partially defined right adjoint when C is a finitely presented object. This result seems to be new even for module categories. For appropriate schemes over a field, the connection with Serre duality is discussed.

The variety of subadditive functions for finite group schemes

For a finite group scheme, the subadditive functions on finite dimensional representations are studied. It is shown that the projective variety of the cohomology ring can be recovered from the equivalence classes of subadditive functions. Using Crawley-Boevey's correspondence between subadditive functions and endofinite modules, we obtain an equivalence relation on the set of point modules introduced in our joint work with Iyengar and Pevtsova. This corresponds to the equivalence relation on pi-points introduced by Friedlander and Pevtsova.

Deriving Auslander's formula

Auslander's formula shows that any abelian category C is equivalent to the category of coherent functors on C modulo the Serre subcategory of all effaceable functors. We establish a derived version of this equivalence. This amounts to showing that the homotopy category of injective objects of some appropriate Grothendieck abelian category (the category of ind-objects of C) is compactly generated and that the full subcategory of compact objects is equivalent to the bounded derived category of C. The same approach shows for an arbitrary Grothendieck abelian category that its derived category and the homotopy category of injective objects are well-generated triangulated categories. For sufficiently large cardinals alpha we identify their alpha-compact objects and compare them.

Cohomological length functions

We study certain integer valued length functions on triangulated categories and establish a correspondence between such functions and cohomological functors taking values in the category of finite length modules over some ring. The irreducible cohomological functions form a topological space. We discuss its basic properties and include explicit calculations for the category of perfect complexes over some specific rings.

Module categories for group algebras over commutative rings

We develop a suitable version of the stable module category of a finite group G over an arbitrary commutative ring k. The purpose of the construction is to produce a compactly generated triangulated category whose compact objects are the finitely presented kG-modules. The main idea is to form a localisation of the usual version of the stable module category with respect to the filtered colimits of weakly injective modules. There is also an analogous version of the homotopy category of weakly injective kG-modules and a recollement relating the stable category, the homotopy category, and the derived category of kG-modules.

A note on thick subcategories of stable derived categories

For an exact category having enough projective objects, we establish a bijection between thick subcategories containing the projective objects and thick subcategories of the stable derived category. Using this bijection we classify thick subcategories of finitely generated modules over local complete intersections and produce generators for the category of coherent sheaves on a separated noetherian scheme with an ample family.

Stratifying modular representations of finite groups

We classify localising subcategories of the stable module category of a finite group that are closed under tensor product with simple (or, equivalently all) modules. One application is a proof of the telescope conjecture in this context. Others include new proofs of the tensor product theorem and of the classification of thick subcategories of the finitely generated modules which avoid the use of cyclic shifted subgroups. Along the way we establish similar classifications for differential graded modules over graded polynomial rings, and over graded exterior algebras.

Stratifying triangulated categories

A notion of stratification is introduced for any compactly generated triangulated category T endowed with an action of a graded commutative noetherian ring R. The utility of this notion is demonstrated by establishing diverse consequences which follow when T is stratified by R. Among them are a classification of the localizing subcategories of T in terms of subsets of the set of prime ideals in R; a classification of the thick subcategories of the subcategory of compact objects in T; and results concerning the support of the R-module of homomorphisms Hom_T^*(C,D) leading to an analogue of the tensor product theorem for support varieties of modular representation of groups.

Approximations and adjoints in homotopy categories

We provide a criterion for the existence of right approximations in cocomplete additive categories; it is a straightforward generalisation of a result due to El Bashir. This criterion is used to construct adjoint functors in homotopy categories. Applications include the study of (pure) derived categories. For instance, it is shown that the pure derived category of any module category is compactly generated.

Introduction to coherent sheaves on weighted projective lines

These notes provide a description of the abelian categories that arise as categories of coherent sheaves on weighted projective lines. Two different approaches are presented: one is based on a list of axioms and the other yields a description in terms of expansions of abelian categories. A weighted projective line is obtained from a projective line by inserting finitely many weights. So we describe the category of coherent sheaves on a projective line in some detail, and the insertion of weights amounts to adding simple objects. We call this process `expansion' and treat it axiomatically. Thus most of these notes are devoted to studying abelian categories, including a brief discussion of tilting theory. We provide many details and have tried to keep the exposition as self-contained as possible.

Representations of quivers via reflection functors

These are the notes for a course on representations of quivers for second year students in Paderborn in summer 2007. My aim was to provide a basic introduction without using any advanced methods. It turns out that a good knowledge of linear algebra is sufficient for proving Gabriel's theorem. Thus we classify the quivers of finite representation type and study their representations using reflection functors. Further material has been added after giving this course in Bielefeld in summer 2010. This includes a discussion of regular representations and wild phenomena. In particular, two classical examples are covered: representations of the Kronecker quiver and representations of the Klein four group.

The telescope conjecture for hereditary rings via Ext-orthogonal pairs

For the module category of a hereditary ring, the Ext-orthogonal pairs of subcategories are studied. For each Ext-orthogonal pair that is generated by a single module, a 5-term exact sequence is constructed. The pairs of finite type are characterized and two consequences for the class of hereditary rings are established: homological epimorphisms and universal localizations coincide, and the telescope conjecture for the derived category holds true. However, we present examples showing that neither of these two statements is true in general for rings of global dimension 2.
