Homotopy invariants of singularity categories

We present a method for computing $\mathbb{A}^1$-homotopy invariants of singularity categories of rings admitting suitable gradings. Using this we describe any such invariant, e.g. homotopy K-theory, for the stable categories of self-injective algebras admitting a connected grading. A remark is also made concerning the vanishing of all such invariants for cluster categories of type $A_{2n}$ quivers.

Morita theory and singularity categories

We propose an analogue of the bounded derived category for an augmented ring spectrum, defined in terms of a notion of Noether normalization. In many cases we show this category is independent of the chosen normalization. Based on this, we define the singularity and cosingularity categories measuring the failure of regularity and coregularity and prove they are Koszul dual in the style of the BGG correspondence. Examples of interest include Koszul algebras and Ginzburg DG-algebras, $C^*(BG)$ for finite groups (or for compact Lie groups with orientable adjoint representation), cochains in rational homotopy theory and various examples from chromatic homotopy theory.

A tour of support theory for triangulated categories through tensor triangular geometry

These notes attempt to give a short survey of the approach to support theory and the study of lattices of triangulated subcategories through the machinery of tensor triangular geometry. One main aim is to introduce the material necessary to state and prove the local-to-global principle. In particular, we discuss Balmer's construction of the spectrum, generalised Rickard idempotents and support for compactly generated triangulated categories, and actions of tensor triangulated categories. Several examples are also given along the way. These notes are based on a series of lectures given during the Spring 2015 program on 'Interactions between Representation Theory, Algebraic Topology and Commutative Algebra' (IRTATCA) at the CRM in Barcelona.

Comparisons between singularity categories and relative stable categories of finite groups

We consider the relationship between the relative stable category of Benson, Iyengar, and Krause and the usual singularity category for group algebras with coefficients in a commutative noetherian ring. When the coefficient ring is self-injective we show that these categories share a common, relatively large, Verdier quotient. At the other extreme, when the coefficient ring has finite global dimension, there is a semi-orthogonal decomposition, due to Poulton, relating the two categories. We prove that this decomposition is partially compatible with the monoidal structure and study the morphism it induces on spectra.

Enrichment and representability for triangulated categories

Given a fixed tensor triangulated category S we consider triangulated categories T together with an S-enrichment which is compatible with the triangulated structure of T. It is shown that, in this setting, an enriched analogue of Brown representability holds when both S and T are compactly generated. A natural class of examples of such enriched triangulated categories categories are module categories over separable monoids in S. In this context we prove a version of the Eilenberg-Watts theorem for exact coproduct and copower preserving S-functors, i.e., we show that any such functor between the module categories of separable monoids in S is given by tensoring with a bimodule.

On the graded dual numbers, arcs, and non-crossing partitions of the integers

We give a combinatorial model for the bounded derived category of graded modules over the dual numbers in terms of arcs on the integer line with a point at infinity. Using this model we describe the lattice of thick subcategories of the bounded derived category, and of the perfect complexes, in terms of non-crossing partitions. We also make some comments on the symmetries of these lattices, exceptional collections, and the analogous problem for the unbounded derived category.

The local-to-global principle for triangulated categories via dimension functions

We formulate a general abstract criterion for verifying the local-to-global principle for a rigidly-compactly generated tensor triangulated category. Our approach is based upon an inductive construction using dimension functions. Using our criterion we give a new proof of the theorem that the local-to-global principle holds for such categories when they have a model and the spectrum of the compacts is noetherian. As further applications we give a new set of conditions on the spectrum of the compacts that guarantee the local-to-global principle holds and use this to classify localising subcategories in the derived category of a semi-artinian absolutely flat ring.

Derived categories of representations of small categories over commutative noetherian rings

We study the derived categories of small categories over commutative noetherian rings. Our main result is a parametrization of the localizing subcategories in terms of the spectrum of the ring and the localizing subcategories over residue fields. In the special case of representations of Dynkin quivers over a commutative noetherian ring we give a complete description of the localizing subcategories of the derived category, a complete description of the thick subcategories of the perfect complexes and show the telescope conjecture holds. We also present some results concerning the telescope conjecture more generally.

Gorenstein homological algebra and universal coefficient theorems

We study criteria for a ring - or more generally, for a small category - to be Gorenstein and for a module over it to be of finite projective dimension. The goal is to unify the universal coefficient theorems found in the literature and to develop a machinery for proving new ones. Among the universal coefficient theorems covered by our methods we find, besides all the classic examples, several exotic examples arising from the KK-theory of C*-algebras and also Neeman's Brown-Adams representability theorem for compactly generated categories.

The derived category of a graded Gorenstein ring

We give an exposition and generalization of Orlov's theorem on graded Gorenstein rings. We show the theorem holds for non-negatively graded rings which are Gorenstein in an appropriate sense and whose degree zero component is an arbitrary non-commutative right noetherian ring of finite global dimension. A short treatment of some foundations for local cohomology and Grothendieck duality at this level of generality is given in order to prove the theorem. As an application we give an equivalence of the derived category of a commutative complete intersection with the homotopy category of graded matrix factorizations over a related ring.

Derived categories of absolutely flat rings

Let S be a commutative ring with topologically noetherian spectrum and let R be the absolutely flat approximation of S. We prove that subsets of the spectrum of R parametrise the localising subcategories of D(R). Moreover, we prove the telescope conjecture holds for D(R). We also consider unbounded derived categories of absolutely flat rings which are not semi-artinian and exhibit an example of a cohomological Bousfield class that is not a Bousfield class.

Even more spectra: tensor triangular comparison maps via graded commutative 2-rings

We initiate the theory of graded commutative 2-rings, a categorification of graded commutative rings. The goal is to provide a systematic generalization of Paul Balmer's comparison maps between the spectrum of tensor-triangulated categories and the Zariski spectra of their central rings. By applying our constructions, we compute the spectrum of the derived category of perfect complexes over any graded commutative ring, and we associate to every scheme with an ample family of line bundles an embedding into the spectrum of an associated graded commutative 2-ring.

preprint2012arXiv

Module categories for group algebras over commutative rings

We develop a suitable version of the stable module category of a finite group G over an arbitrary commutative ring k. The purpose of the construction is to produce a compactly generated triangulated category whose compact objects are the finitely presented kG-modules. The main idea is to form a localisation of the usual version of the stable module category with respect to the filtered colimits of weakly injective modules. There is also an analogous version of the homotopy category of weakly injective kG-modules and a recollement relating the stable category, the homotopy category, and the derived category of kG-modules.

Subcategories of singularity categories via tensor actions

We obtain, via the formalism of tensor actions, a complete classification of the localizing subcategories of the stable derived category of any affine scheme with hypersurface singularities and of any local complete intersection over a field; in particular this classifies the thick subcategories of the singularity categories of such rings. The analogous result is also proved for certain locally complete intersection schemes. It is also shown that from each of these classifications one can deduce the (relative) telescope conjecture.

preprint2012arXiv

Support theory via actions of tensor triangulated categories

We give a definition of the action of a tensor triangulated category T on a triangulated category K. In the case that T is rigidly-compactly generated and K is compactly generated we show this gives rise to a notion of supports which categorifies work of Benson, Iyengar, and Krause and extends work of Balmer and Favi. We prove that a suitable version of the local-to-global principle holds very generally. A relative version of the telescope conjecture is formulated and we give a sufficient condition for it to hold.

A note on thick subcategories of stable derived categories

For an exact category having enough projective objects, we establish a bijection between thick subcategories containing the projective objects and thick subcategories of the stable derived category. Using this bijection we classify thick subcategories of finitely generated modules over local complete intersections and produce generators for the category of coherent sheaves on a separated noetherian scheme with an ample family.

preprint2011arXiv

On the derived category of a graded commutative noetherian ring

For any graded commutative noetherian ring, where the grading group is abelian and where commutativity is allowed to hold in a quite general sense, we establish an inclusion-preserving bijection between, on the one hand, the twist-closed localizing subcategories of the derived category, and, on the other hand, subsets of the homogeneous spectrum of prime ideals of the ring. We provide an application to weighted projective schemes.
