Locally dualizable modules abound

It is proved that given any prime ideal $\mathfrak{p}$ of height at least 2 in a countable commutative noetherian ring $A$, there are uncountably many more dualizable objects in the $\mathfrak{p}$-local $\mathfrak{p}$-torsion stratum of the derived category of $A$ than those that are obtained as retracts of images of perfect $A$-complexes. An analogous result is established dealing with the stable module category of the group algebra, over a countable field of positive characteristic $p$, of an elementary abelian $p$-group of rank at least 3.

Automorphisms of the Koszul homology of a local ring

This work concerns the Koszul complex $K$ of a commutative noetherian local ring $R$, with its natural structure as differential graded $R$-algebra. It is proved that under diverse conditions, involving the multiplicative structure of $H(K)$, any dg $R$-algebra automorphism of $K$ induces the identity map on $H(K)$. In such cases, it is possible to define an action of the automorphism group of $R$ on $H(K)$. On the other hand, numerous rings are described for which $K$ has automorphisms that do not induce the identity on $H(K)$. For any $R$, it is shown that the group of automorphisms of $H(K)$ induced by automorphisms of $K$ is abelian.

Cohomological supports of tensor products of modules over commutative rings

This works concerns cohomological support varieties of modules over commutative local rings. The main result is that the support of a derived tensor product of a pair of differential graded modules over a Koszul complex is the join of the supports of the modules. This generalizes, and gives another proof of, a result of Dao and the third author dealing with Tor-independent modules over complete intersection rings. The result for Koszul complexes has a broader applicability, including to exterior algebras over local rings.

Exceptional complete intersection maps of local rings

This work concerns surjective maps $φ\colon R\to S$ of commutative noetherian local rings with kernel generated by a regular sequence that is part of a minimal generating set for the maximal ideal of $R$. The main result provides criteria for detecting such exceptional complete intersection maps in terms of the lattices of thick subcategories of the derived category of complexes of finite length homology. A key input is a characterization of such maps in terms of the truncated Atiyah class of $φ$.

Rigidity properties of the cotangent complex

This work concerns maps $φ\colon R\to S$ of commutative noetherian rings, locally of finite flat dimension. It is proved that the André-Quillen homology functors are rigid, namely, if $\mathrm{D}_n(S/R;-)=0$ for some $n\ge 2$, then $\mathrm{D}_n(S/R;-)=0$ for all $n\ge 2$ and $φ$ is locally complete intersection. This extends Avramov's theorem that draws the same conclusion assuming $\mathrm{D}_n(S/R;-)$ vanishes for all $n\gg 0$, confirming a conjecture of Quillen. The rigidity of André-Quillen functors is deduced from a more general result about the higher cotangent modules which answers a question raised by Avramov and Herzog, and subsumes a conjecture of Vasconcelos that was proved recently by the first author. The new insight leading to these results concerns the equivariance of a map from André-Quillen cohomology to Hochschild cohomology defined using the universal Atiyah class of $φ$.

The Nakayama functor and its completion for Gorenstein algebras

Duality properties are studied for a Gorenstein algebra that is finite and projective over its center. Using the homotopy category of injective modules, it is proved that there is a local duality theorem for the subcategory of acyclic complexes of such an algebra, akin to the local duality theorems of Grothendieck and Serre in the context of commutative algebra and algebraic geometry. A key ingredient is the Nakayama functor on the bounded derived category of a Gorenstein algebra, and its extension to the full homotopy category of injective modules.

Locally complete intersection maps and the proxy small property

It is proved that a map $φ\colon R\to S$ of commutative noetherian rings that is essentially of finite type and flat is locally complete intersection if and only $S$ is proxy small as a bimodule. This means that the thick subcategory generated by $S$ as a module over the enveloping algebra $S\otimes_RS$ contains a perfect complex supported fully on the diagonal ideal. This is in the spirit of the classical result that $φ$ is smooth if and only if $S$ is small as a bimodule, that is to say, it is itself equivalent to a perfect complex. The geometric analogue, dealing with maps between schemes, is also established. Applications include simpler proofs of factorization theorems for locally complete intersection maps.

Multiplicities and Betti numbers in local algebra via lim Ulrich points

This work concerns finite free complexes with finite length homology over a commutative noetherian local ring $R$. The focus is on complexes that have length $\mathrm{dim}\, R$, which is the smallest possible value, and in particular on free resolutions of modules of finite length and finite projective dimension. Lower bounds are obtained on the Euler characteristic of such short complexes when $R$ is a strict complete intersection, and also on the Dutta multiplicity, when $R$ is the localization at its maximal ideal of a standard graded algebra over a field of positive prime characteristic. The key idea in the proof is the construction of a suitable Ulrich module, or, in the latter case, a sequence of modules that have the Ulrich property asymptotically, and with good convergence properties in the rational Grothendieck group of $R$. Such a sequence is obtained by constructing an appropriate sequence of sheaves on the associated projective variety.

Rank varieties and $π$-points for elementary supergroup schemes

We develop a support theory for elementary supergroup schemes, over a field of positive characteristic $p\ge 3$, starting with a definition of a $π$-point generalising cyclic shifted subgroups of Carlson for elementary abelian groups and $π$-points of Friedlander and Pevtsova for finite group schemes. These are defined in terms of maps from the graded algebra $k[t,τ]/(t^p-τ^2)$, where $t$ has even degree and $τ$ has odd degree. The strength of the theory is demonstrated by classifying the parity change invariant localising subcategories of the stable module category of an elementary supergroup scheme.

Tests for injectivity of modules over commutative rings

It is proved that a module M over a commutative noetherian ring R is injective if Ext^i((R/p)_p,M)=0 holds for every i\ge 1 and every prime ideal p in R. This leads to the following characterization of injective modules: If F is faithfully flat, then a module M such that Hom(F,M) is injective and Ext^i(F,M)=0 for all i\ge 1 is injective. A limited version of this characterization is also proved for certain non-noetherian rings.

preprint2015arXiv

Annihilation of cohomology and strong generation of module categories

The cohomology annihilator of a noetherian ring that is finitely generated as a module over its center is introduced. Results are established linking the existence of non-trivial cohomology annihilators and the existence of strong generators for the category of finitely generated modules. Exploiting this link, results of Popescu and Roczen, and Wang concerning cohomology annihilators of commutative rings, and also results of Aihara and Takahashi, Keller and Van den Bergh, and Rouquier on strong finite generation of the corresponding bounded derived category, are generalized to cover excellent local rings and also rings essentially of finite type over a field.

preprint2015arXiv

Homology over trivial extensions of commutative DG algebras

Conditions on the Koszul complex of a noetherian local ring $R$ guarantee that $\mathrm{Tor}^{R}_{i}(M,N)$ is non-zero for infinitely many $i$, when $M$ and $N$ are finitely generated $R$-modules of infinite projective dimension. These conditions are obtained from results concerning Tor of differential graded modules over certain trivial extensions of commutative differential graded algebras.

Absolutely Koszul algebras and the Backelin-Roos property

We study absolutely Koszul algebras, Koszul algebras with the Backelin-Roos property and their behavior under standard algebraic operations. In particular, we identify some Veronese subrings of polynomial rings that have the Backelin-Roos property and conjecture that the list is indeed complete. Among other things, we prove that every universally Koszul ring defined by monomials has the Backelin-Roos property.

preprint2014arXiv

Annihilation of cohomology and decompositions of derived categories

It is proved that an element $r$ in the center of a coherent ring $Λ$ annihilates $\mathrm{Ext}^{n}_Λ(M,N)$, for some positive integer $n$ and all finitely presented $Λ$-modules $M$ and $N$, if and only if the bounded derived category of $Λ$ is an extension of the subcategory consisting of complexes annihilated by $r$ and those obtained as $n$-fold extensions of $Λ$. This has applications to finiteness of dimension of derived categories.

Criteria for vanishing of Tor over Complete Intersections

In this paper we exploit properties of Dao's eta-pairing as well as techniques of Huneke, Jorgensen, and Wiegand to study the vanishing of Tor_i(M,N) of finitely generated modules M, N over complete intersections. We prove vanishing of Tor_i(M, N) for all positive integers i under depth conditions on M, N, and their tensor product. Our arguments improve a result of Dao and establish a new connection between the vanishing of Tor and the depth of tensor products.

Torsion in tensor powers of modules

Tensor products usually have nonzero torsion. This is a central theme of Auslander's paper "Modules over unramified regular local rings"; the theme continues in the work of Huneke and Wiegand. The main focus in this note is on tensor powers of a finitely generated module over a local ring. Also, we study torsion-free modules N with the property that its tensor product with any module M has torsion, unless M is very special. Important examples of such modules N are the Frobenius power of a ring, viewed as a module over itself, that is a complete intersection domain of positive characteristic.

preprint2014arXiv

Torsion in tensor products, and tensor powers, of modules

For finitely generated modules M and N over a complete intersection R, the vanishing of Tor_i^R(M,N) for all i> 0 gives a tight relationship among depth properties of M, N and their tensor product. Here we concentrate on the converse and show, under mild conditions, that the tensor product of M and N being torsion-free (or satisfying higher Serre conditions) forces vanishing of Tor. Special attention is paid to the case of tensor powers of a single module.

Bass numbers over local rings via stable cohomology

For any non-zero finite module M of finite projective dimension over a noetherian local ring R with maximal ideal m and residue field k, it is proved that the natural map Ext_R(k,M)-->Ext_R(k,M/mM) is non-zero when R is regular and is zero otherwise. A noteworthy aspect of the proof is the use of stable cohomology. Applications include computations of Bass series over certain local rings.

preprint2012arXiv

Module categories for group algebras over commutative rings

We develop a suitable version of the stable module category of a finite group G over an arbitrary commutative ring k. The purpose of the construction is to produce a compactly generated triangulated category whose compact objects are the finitely presented kG-modules. The main idea is to form a localisation of the usual version of the stable module category with respect to the filtered colimits of weakly injective modules. There is also an analogous version of the homotopy category of weakly injective kG-modules and a recollement relating the stable category, the homotopy category, and the derived category of kG-modules.

Thick subcategories of the bounded derived category of a finite group

A new proof of the classification for tensor ideal thick subcategories of the bounded derived category, and the stable category, of modular representations of a finite group is obtained. The arguments apply more generally to yield a classification of thick subcategories of the bounded derived category of an artinian complete intersection ring. One of the salient features of this work is that it takes no recourse to infinite constructions, unlike the previous proofs of these results.

Detecting flatness over smooth bases

Given an essentially finite type morphism of schemes f: X --> Y and a positive integer d, let f^{d}: X^{d} --> Y denote the natural map from the d-fold fiber product, X^{d}, of X over Y and π_i: X^{d} --> X the i'th canonical projection. When Y smooth over a field and F is a coherent sheaf on X, it is proved that F is flat over Y if (and only if) f^{d} maps the associated points of the tensor product sheaf \otimes_{i=1}^d π_i^*(F) to generic points of Y, for some d greater than or equal to dim Y. The equivalent statement in commutative algebra is an analog---but not a consequence---of a classical criterion of Auslander and Lichtenbaum for the freeness of finitely generated modules over regular local rings.

preprint2011arXiv

Homological invariants of modules over contracting endomorphisms

It is proved that when R is a local ring of positive characteristic, $ϕ$ is its Frobenius endomorphism, and some non-zero finite R-module has finite flat dimension or finite injective dimension for the R-module structure induced through $ϕ$, then R is regular. This broad generalization of Kunz's characterization of regularity in positive characteristic is deduced from a theorem concerning a local ring R with residue field of k of arbitrary characteristic: If $ϕ$ is a contracting endomorphism of R, then the Betti numbers and the Bass numbers over $ϕ$ of any non-zero finitely generated R-module grow at the same rate, on an exponential scale, as the Betti numbers of k over R.

Stratifying modular representations of finite groups

We classify localising subcategories of the stable module category of a finite group that are closed under tensor product with simple (or, equivalently all) modules. One application is a proof of the telescope conjecture in this context. Others include new proofs of the tensor product theorem and of the classification of thick subcategories of the finitely generated modules which avoid the use of cyclic shifted subgroups. Along the way we establish similar classifications for differential graded modules over graded polynomial rings, and over graded exterior algebras.

preprint2011arXiv

Stratifying triangulated categories

A notion of stratification is introduced for any compactly generated triangulated category T endowed with an action of a graded commutative noetherian ring R. The utility of this notion is demonstrated by establishing diverse consequences which follow when T is stratified by R. Among them are a classification of the localizing subcategories of T in terms of subsets of the set of prime ideals in R; a classification of the thick subcategories of the subcategory of compact objects in T; and results concerning the support of the R-module of homomorphisms Hom_T^*(C,D) leading to an analogue of the tensor product theorem for support varieties of modular representation of groups.

Reflexivity and rigidity for complexes, II: Schemes

We prove basic facts about reflexivity in derived categories over noetherian schemes; and about related notions such as semidualizing complexes, invertible complexes, and Gorenstein-perfect maps. Also, we study a notion of rigidity with respect to semidualizing complexes, in particular, relative dualizing complexes for Gorenstein-perfect maps. Our results include theorems of Yekutieli and Zhang concerning rigid dualizing complexes on schemes. This work is a continuation of part I, which dealt with commutative rings.

Short Koszul modules

This article is concerned with graded modules M with linear resolutions over a standard graded algebra R. It is proved that if such an M has Hilbert series $H_M(s)$ of the form $ps^d+qs^{d+1}$, then the algebra R is Koszul; if, in addition, M has constant Betti numbers, then $H_R(s)=1+es+(e-1)s^{2}$. When $H_R(s)=1+es+rs^{2}$ with $r\leq e-1$, and R is Gorenstein or $e=r+1\le 3$, it is proved that generic R-modules with $q\leq(e-1)p$ are linear.

On the existence of star products on quotient spaces of linear Hamiltonian torus actions

We discuss BFV deformation quantization of singular symplectic quotient spaces in the special case of linear Hamiltonian torus actions. In particular, we show that the Koszul complex on the moment map of an effective linear Hamiltonian torus action is acyclic. We rephrase the nonpositivity condition of Arms, Gotay and Jennings for linear Hamiltonian torus actions. It follows that reduced spaces of such actions admit continuous star products.
