On the Equivalence of Causal Models: A Category-Theoretic Approach

We develop a category-theoretic criterion for determining the equivalence of causal models having different but homomorphic directed acyclic graphs over discrete variables. Following Jacobs et al. (2019), we define a causal model as a probabilistic interpretation of a causal string diagram, i.e., a functor from the ``syntactic'' category $\textsf{Syn}_G$ of graph $G$ to the category $\textsf{Stoch}$ of finite sets and stochastic matrices. The equivalence of causal models is then defined in terms of a natural transformation or isomorphism between two such functors, which we call a $Φ$-abstraction and $Φ$-equivalence, respectively. It is shown that when one model is a $Φ$-abstraction of another, the intervention calculus of the former can be consistently translated into that of the latter. We also identify the condition under which a model accommodates a $Φ$-abstraction, when transformations are deterministic.

Entangled N-photon states for fair and optimal social decision making

Situations involving competition for resources among entities can be modeled by the competitive multi-armed bandit (CMAB) problem, which relates to social issues such as maximizing the total outcome and achieving the fairest resource repartition among individuals. In these respects, the intrinsic randomness and global properties of quantum states provide ideal tools for obtaining optimal solutions to this problem. Based on the previous study of the CMAB problem in the two-arm, two-player case, this paper presents the theoretical principles necessary to find polarization-entangled N-photon states that can optimize the total resource output while ensuring equality among players. These principles were applied to two-, three-, four-, and five-player cases by using numerical simulations to reproduce realistic configurations and find the best strategies to overcome potential misalignment between the polarization measurement systems of the players. Although a general formula for the N-player case is not presented here, general derivation rules and a verification algorithm are proposed. This report demonstrates the potential usability of quantum states in collective decision making with limited, probabilistic resources, which could serve as a first step toward quantum-based resource allocation systems.

Quantum Walk and Dressed Photon

A physical model called dressed photons, a composite system of photons and excitation of electrons in the nano-particles, is effectively used in the realm of near-field optics. Many interesting behaviors of dressed photons are known, especially the rapid energy transfer and the accumulation to singular points, e.g., points with strong dissipation. We propose a new modelling of dressed photons based on quantum walks, especially Grover walks on semi-infinite graphs which we call jellyfish graphs, and show a universal accumulation phenomena around the point with strong dissipation.

Rational Choice Hypothesis as X-point of Utility Function and Norm Function

Towards the realization of a sustainable, fair and inclusive society, we proposed a novel decision-making model that incorporates social norms in a rational choice model from the standpoints of deontology and utilitarianism. We proposed a hypothesis that interprets choice of action as the X-point for individual utility function that increases with actions and social norm function that decreases with actions. This hypothesis is based on humans psychologically balancing the value of utility and norms in selecting actions. Using the hypothesis and approximation, we were able to isolate and infer utility function and norm function from real-world measurement data of actions on environmental conditions and elucidate the interaction between the both functions that led from current status to target actions. As examples of collective data that aggregate decision-making of individuals, we looked at the changes in power usage before and after the Great East Japan Earthquake and the correlation between national GDP and CO2 emission in different countries. The first example showed that the perceived benefits of power (i.e., utility of power usage) was stronger than the power usage restrictions imposed by norms after the earthquake, contrary to our expectation. The second example showed that a reduction of CO2 emission in each country was not related to utility derived from GDP but to norms related to CO2 emission. Going forward, we will apply this new X-point model to actual social practices involving normative problems, and design the approaches for the diagnosis, prognosis and intervention of social systems by IT systems.

Sustainability and Fairness Simulations Based on Decision-Making Model of Utility Function and Norm Function

We introduced a decision-making model based on value functions that included individualistic utility function and socio-constructivistic norm function and proposed a norm-fostering process that recursively updates norm function through mutual recognition between the self and others. As an example, we looked at the resource-sharing problem typical of economic activities and assumed the distribution of individual actions to define the (1) norm function fostered through mutual comparison of value/action ratio based on the equity theory (progressive tax-like), (2) norm function proportional to resource utilization (proportional tax-like) and (3) fixed norm function independent of resource utilization (fixed tax-like). By carrying out numerical simulation, we showed that the progressive tax-like norm function (i) does not increase disparity for the distribution of the actions, unlike the other norm functions, and (ii) has high resource productivity and low Gini coefficient. Therefore the progressive tax-like norm function has the highest sustainability and fairness.

Local state and sector theory in local quantum physics

We define a new concept of local states in the framework of algebraic quantum field theory (AQFT). Local states are a natural generalization of states and give a clear vision of localization in the context of QFT. In terms of them, we can find a condition from which follows automatically the famous DHR selection criterion in DHR-DR theory. As a result, we can understand the condition as consequences of physically natural state preparations in vacuum backgrounds. Furthermore, a theory of orthogonal decomposition of completely positive (CP) maps is developed. It unifies a theory of orthogonal decomposition of states and order structure theory of CP maps. By using it, localized version of sectors is formulated, which gives sector theory for local states with respect to general reference representations.

Photon localization revisited

In the light of Newton-Wigner-Wightman theorem of localizability question, we have proposed before a typical generation mechanism of effective mass for photons to be localized in the form of polaritons owing to photon-media interactions. In this paper, the general essence of this example model is extracted in such a form as Quantum Field Ontology associated with Eventualization Principle, which enables us to explain the mutual relations back and forth, between quantum fields and various forms of particles in the localized form of the former.

The Arcsine law and an asymptotic behavior of orthogonal polynomials

Interacting Fock space connects the study of quantum probability theory, classical random variables, and orthogonal polynomials. It is a pre-Hilbert space associated with creation, preservation, and annihilation processes. We prove that if three processes are asymptotically commutative, the arcsine law arises as the "large quantum number limits." As a corollary, it is shown that for many probability measures, asymptotic behavior of orthogonal polynomials is described by the arcsine function. A weaker form of asymptotic commutativity provides us a discretized arcsine law.

On operator-valued monotone independence

We investigate operator-valued monotone independence, a noncommutative version of independence for conditional expectation. First we introduce operator-valued monotone cumulants to clarify the whole theory and show the moment-cumulant formula. As an application, one can obtain an easy proof of Central Limit Theorem for operator-valued case. Moreover, we prove a generalization of Muraki's formula for the sum of independent random variables and a relation between generating functions of moments and cumulants.

Arcsine Law as the Classical Limit for interacting Fock spaces

In the present paper we discuss how to generalize ``Quantum-Classical Correspondence'' by means of the notion of interacting Fock spaces, which associates algebraic probability theory and the theory of orthogonal polynomials of probability measures. As an application we show that the Arcsine Law is ``Classical Limit'' for interacting Fock spaces corresponnding to certain kind of symmetric probability measures such as q-Gaussians. We also discuss the case of the exponential distribution as a simple example of asymmetric probability measures.

Indeterminacy of the moment problem for symmetric probability measures

In this paper, the moment problem for symmetric probability measures is characterized in terms of associated sequences called Jacobi sequences $\{ω_n\}$. A notion named property (SC), which is proved to be a necessary and sufficient condition for the indeterminacy of the moment problem, naturally arises from the viewpoint of finite dimensional approximation for infinite matrices. We prove that the moment problem for q-Gaussian not only for $q>1$ but also for $q<-1$ is indeterminate. We also prove that hyperbolic secant distribution is "the last probability measure" which is uniquely determined by the moment sequence of power type, just by checking property (SC) with quite easy calculation.

No Zero Divisor for Wick Product in $(S)^{\ast}$}

In White Noise Analysis (WNA), various random quantities are analyzed as elements of $(S)^{\ast}$, the space of Hida distributions ([1]). Hida distributions are generalized functions of white noise, which is to be naturally viewed as the derivative of the Brownian motion. On $(S)^{\ast}$, the Wick product is defined in terms of the $\mathcal{S}$-transform. We have found such a remarkable property that the Wick product has no zero devisors among Hida distributions. This result is a WNA version of Titchmarsh's theorem and is expected to play fundamental roles in developing the \textquotedblleft operational calculus\textquotedblright in WNA along the line of Mikusiński's version for solving differential equations.

Notes on the Krupa-Zawisza Ultrapower of Self-Adjoint Operators

It is known that there is a difficulty in constructing the ultrapower of unbounded operators. Krupa and Zawisza gave a rigorous definition of the ultrapower A^{omega} of a selfadjoint operator A. In this note, we give alternative description of A^{omega} and the Hilbert space H(A) on which A^{omega} is densely defined, which provides a criterion to determine to which representing sequence (ξ_n)n of a given vector ξin dom(A^{omega}) has the property that A^{omega}ξ= (Aξ_n)_{omega} holds.

Joint cumulants for natural independence

Many kinds of independence have been defined in non-commutative probability theory. Natural independence is an important class of independence; this class consists of five independences (tensor, free, Boolean, monotone and anti-monotone ones). In the present paper, a unified treatment of joint cumulants is introduced for natural independence. The way we define joint cumulants enables us not only to find the monotone joint cumulants but also to give a new characterization of joint cumulants for other kinds of natural independence, i.e., tensor, free and Boolean independences. We also investigate relations between generating functions of moments and monotone cumulants. We find a natural extension of the Muraki formula, which describes the sum of monotone independent random variables, to the multivariate case.

Who has seen a free photon?

While the notion of the position of photons is indispensable in the quantum optical situations, it has been known in mathematical physics that any position operator cannot be defined for a massless free particle with a non-zero finite spin. This dilemma is resolved by introducing the "effective mass" of a photon due to the interaction with matter. The validity of this interpretation is confirmed in reference to the picture of "polariton", a basic notion in optical and solid physics. In this connection, we discuss the long-standing controversy between Minkowski's and Abraham's definitions of the momenta of a photon in media from the general viewpoint adopted in the appendix.

The Monotone Cumulants

In the present paper we define the notion of generalized cumulants which gives a universal framework for commutative, free, Boolean, and especially, monotone probability theories. The uniqueness of generalized cumulants holds for each independence, and hence, generalized cumulants are equal to the usual cumulants in the commutative, free and Boolean cases. The way we define (generalized) cumulants needs neither partition lattices nor generating functions and then will give a new viewpoint to cumulants. We define ``monotone cumulants'' in the sense of generalized cumulants and we obtain quite simple proofs of central limit theorem and Poisson's law of small numbers in monotone probability theory. Moreover, we clarify a combinatorial structure of moment-cumulant formula with the use of ``monotone partitions''.

The space of tempered distributions as a k-space

In this paper, we investigate the roles of compact sets in the space of tempered distributions $\mathscr{S}^{\prime}$. The key notion is "k-spaces", which constitute a fairly general class of topological spaces. In a k-space, the system of compact sets controls continuous functions and Borel measures. Focusing on the k-space structure of $\mathscr{S}^{\prime}$, we prove some theorems which seem to be fundamental for infinite dimensional harmonic analysis from a new and unified view point. For example, the invariance principle of Donsker for the white noise measure is shown in terms of infinite dimansional characteristic functions.
