$l^1$-higher index, $l^1$-higher rho invariant and cyclic cohomology

In this paper, we study $l^1$-higher index theory and its pairing with cyclic cohomology for both closed manifolds and compact manifolds with boundary. We first give a sufficient geometric condition for the vanishing of the $l^1$-higher indices of Dirac-type operators on closed manifolds. This leads us to define an $l^1$-version of higher rho invariants. We prove a product formula for these $l^1$-higher rho invariants. A main novelty of our product formula is that it works in the general Banach algebra setting, in particular, the $l^1$-setting. On compact spin manifolds with boundary, we also give a sufficient geometric condition for Dirac operators to have well-defined $l^1$-higher indices. More precisely, we show that, on a compact spin manifold $M$ with boundary equipped with a Riemannian metric which has product structure near the boundary, if the scalar curvature on the boundary is sufficiently large, then the $l^1$-higher index of its Dirac operator $D_M$ is well-defined and lies in the $K$-theory of the $l^1$-algebra of the fundamental group. As an immediate corollary, we see that if the Bost conjecture holds for the fundamental group of $M$, then the $C^\ast$-algebraic higher index of $D_M$ lies in the image of the Baum-Connes assembly map. By pairing the above $K$-theoretic $l^1$-index results with cyclic cocycles, we prove an $l^1$-version of the higher Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index theorem for manifolds with boundary. A key ingredient of its proof is the product formula for $l^1$-higher rho invariants mentioned above.

The Novikov conjecture, the group of volume preserving diffeomorphisms and Hilbert-Hadamard spaces

We prove that the Novikov conjecture holds for any discrete group admitting an isometric and metrically proper action on an admissible Hilbert-Hadamard space. Admissible Hilbert-Hadamard spaces are a class of (possibly infinite-dimensional) non-positively curved metric spaces that contain dense sequences of closed convex subsets isometric to Riemannian manifolds. Examples of admissible Hilbert-Hadamard spaces include Hilbert spaces, certain simply connected and non-positively curved Riemannian-Hilbertian manifolds and infinite\-/dimensional symmetric spaces. Thus our main theorem can be considered as an infinite-dimensional analogue of Kasparov's theorem on the Novikov conjecture for groups acting properly and isometrically on complete, simply connected and non-positively curved manifolds. As a consequence, we show that the Novikov conjecture holds for geometrically discrete subgroups of the group of volume preserving diffeomorphisms of a closed smooth manifold. This result is inspired by Connes' theorem that the Novikov conjecture holds for higher signatures associated to the Gelfand-Fuchs classes of groups of diffeormorphisms.

Additivity of higher rho invariants and nonrigidity of topological manifolds

Let $X$ be a closed oriented connected topological manifold of dimension $n\geq 5$. The structure group of $X$ is the abelian group of equivalence classes of all pairs $(f, M)$ such that $M$ is a closed oriented manifold and $f\colon M \to X$ is an orientation-preserving homotopy equivalence. The main purpose of this article is to prove that a higher rho invariant defines a group homomorphism from the topological structure group of $X$ to the $C^*$-algebraic structure group of $X$. In fact, we introduce a higher rho invariant map on the homology manifold structure group of a closed oriented connected $\textit{topological}$ manifold, and prove its additivity. This higher rho invariant map restricts to the higher rho invariant map on the topological structure group. More generally, the same techniques developed in this paper can be applied to define a higher rho invariant map on the homology manifold structure group of a closed oriented connected $\textit{homology}$ manifold. As an application, we use the additivity of the higher rho invariant map to study non-rigidity of topological manifolds. More precisely, we give a lower bound for the free rank of the $\textit{algebraically reduced}$ structure group of $X$ by the number of torsion elements in $π_1 X$. Here the algebraic reduced structure group of $X$ is the quotient of the topological structure group of $X$ modulo a certain action of self-homotopy equivalences of $X$. We also introduce a notion of homological higher rho invariant, which can be used to detect many elements in the structure group of a closed oriented topological manifold, even when the fundamental group of the manifold is torsion free. In particular, we apply this homological higher rho invariant to show that the structure group is not finitely generated for a class of manifolds.

The equivariant coarse Novikov conjecture and coarse embedding

The equivariant coarse Novikov conjecture provides an algorithm for determining nonvanishing of equivariant higher index of elliptic differential operators on noncompact manifolds. In this article, we prove the equivariant coarse Novikov conjecture under certain coarse embeddability conditions. More precisely, if a discrete group $Γ$ acts on a bounded geometric space $X$ properly, isometrically, and with bounded distortion, $X/Γ$ and $Γ$ admit coarse embeddings into Hilbert space, then the $Γ$-equivariant coarse Novikov conjecture holds for $X$. Here bounded distortion means that for any $γ\inΓ$, $\sup_{x\in Y} d(γx,x)<\infty$, where $Y$ is a fundamental domain of the $Γ$-action on $X$.

Quantitative K-theory and the K{ü}nneth formula for operator algebras

In this paper, we apply quantitative operator K-theory to develop an algorithm for computing K-theory for the class of filtered C *-algebras with asymptotic finite nuclear decomposition. As a consequence, we prove the K{ü}nneth formula for C *-algebras in this class. Our main technical tool is a quantitative Mayer-Vietoris sequence for K-theory of filtered C *-algebras.

Dynamic Asymptotic Dimension: relation to dynamics, topology, coarse geometry, and $C^*$-algebras

We introduce dynamic asymptotic dimension, a notion of dimension for actions of discrete groups on locally compact spaces, and more generally for locally compact étale groupoids. We study our notion for minimal actions of the integer group, its relation with conditions used by Bartels, Lück, and Reich in the context of controlled topology, and its connections with Gromov's theory of asymptotic dimension. We also show that dynamic asymptotic dimension gives bounds on the nuclear dimension of Winter and Zacharias for C*-algebras associated to dynamical systems. Dynamic asymptotic dimension also has implications for K-theory and manifold topology: these will be drawn out in subsequent work.

An Analytic Grothendieck Riemann Roch Theorem

We extend the Boutet de Monvel Toeplitz index theorem to complex manifold with isolated singularities following the relative $K$-homology theory of Baum, Douglas, and Taylor for manifold with boundary. We apply this index theorem to study the Arveson-Douglas conjecture. Let $\ball^m$ be the unit ball in $\mathbb{C}^m$, and $I$ an ideal in the polynomial algebra $\mathbb{C}[z_1, \cdots, z_m]$. We prove that when the zero variety $Z_I$ is a complete intersection space with only isolated singularities and intersects with the unit sphere $\mathbb{S}^{2m-1}$ transversely, the representations of $\mathbb{C}[z_1, \cdots, z_m]$ on the closure of $I$ in $L^2_a(\ball^m)$ and also the corresponding quotient space $Q_I$ are essentially normal. Furthermore, we prove an index theorem for Toeplitz operators on $Q_I$ by showing that the representation of $\mathbb{C}[z_1, \cdots, z_m]$ on the quotient space $Q_I$ gives the fundamental class of the boundary $Z_I\cap \mathbb{S}^{2m-1}$. In the appendix, we prove with Kai Wang that if $f\in L^2_a(\ball^m)$ vanishes on $Z_I\cap \ball ^m$, then $f$ is contained inside the closure of the ideal $I$ in $L^2_a(\ball^m)$.

Geometric Property (T)

This paper discusses `geometric property (T)'. This is a property of metric spaces introduced in earlier work of the authors for its applications to K-theory. Geometric property (T) is a strong form of `expansion property': in particular for a sequence of finite graphs $(X_n)$, it is strictly stronger than $(X_n)$ being an expander in the sense that the Cheeger constants $h(X_n)$ are bounded below. We show here that geometric property (T) is a coarse invariant, i.e. depends only on the large-scale geometry of a metric space $X$. We also discuss the relationships between geometric property (T) and amenability, property (T), and various coarse geometric notions of a-T-menability. In particular, we show that property (T) for a residually finite group is characterised by geometric property (T) for its finite quotients.

Positive scalar curvature, higher rho invariants and localization algebras

In this paper, we use localization algebras to study higher rho invariants of closed spin manifolds with positive scalar curvature metrics. The higher rho invariant is a secondary invariant and is closely related to positive scalar curvature problems. The main result of the paper connects the higher index of the Dirac operator on a spin manifold with boundary to the higher rho invariant of the Dirac operator on the boundary, where the boundary is endowed with a positive scalar curvature metric. Our result extends a theorem of Piazza and Schick.

A finite dimensional approach to the strong Novikov conjecture

The aim of this paper is to introduce an approach to the (strong) Novikov conjecture based on continuous families of finite dimensional representations: this is partly inspired by ideas of Lusztig using the Atiyah-Singer families index theorem, and partly by Carlsson's deformation $K$--theory. Using this approach, we give new proofs of the strong Novikov conjecture in several interesting cases, including crystallographic groups and surface groups. The method presented here is relatively accessible compared with other proofs of the Novikov conjecture, and also yields some information about the $K$--theory and cohomology of representation spaces.

Finite part of operator K-theory for groups finitely embeddable into Hilbert space and the degree of non-rigidity of manifolds

In this paper, we study lower bounds on the K-theory of the maximal $C^*$-algebra of a discrete group based on the amount of torsion it contains. We call this the finite part of the operator K-theory and give a lower bound that is valid for a large class of groups, called the "finitely embeddable groups". The class of finitely embeddable groups includes all residually finite groups, amenable groups, Gromov's monster groups, virtually torsion free groups (e.g. $Out(F_n)$), and any group of analytic diffeomorphisms of an analytic connected manifold fixing a given point. It is an open question if every countable group is finitely embeddable. We apply this result to measure the degree of non-rigidity for any compact oriented manifold $M$ with dimension $4k-1$ $(k>1)$. We derive a lower bound on the rank of the structure group $S(M)$ in this case. For a compact Riemannian manifold $M$ with dimension greater than or equal to 5 and positive scalar curvature metric, there is an abelian group $P(M)$ that measures the size of the space of all positive scalar curvature metrics on $M$. We obtain a lower bound on the rank of the abelian group $P(M)$ when the compact smooth spin manifold $M$ has dimension $2k-1$ $(k>2)$ and the fundamental group of $M$ is finitely embeddable.

A relative higher index theorem, diffeomorphisms and positive scalar curvature

We prove a general relative higher index theorem for complete manifolds with positive scalar curvature towards infinity. We apply this theorem to study Riemannian metrics of positive scalar curvature on manifolds. For every two metrics of positive scalar curvature on a closed manifold and a Galois cover of the manifold, we define a secondary higher index class. Non-vanishing of this higher index class is an obstruction for the two metrics to be in the same connected component of the space of metrics of positive scalar curvature. In the special case where one metric is induced from the other by a diffeomorphism of the manifold, we obtain a formula for computing this higher index class. In particular, it follows that the higher index class lies in the image of the Baum-Connes assembly map.

On a quantitative operator K-theory

In this paper, we develop a quantitative K-theory for filtered C*-algebras. Particularly interesting examples of filtered C*-algebras include group C*-algebras, crossed product C*-algebras and Roe algebras. We prove a quantitative version of the six term exact sequence and a quantitative Bott periodicity. We apply the quantitative K-theory to formulate a quantitative version of the Baum-Connes conjecture and prove that the quantitative Baum-Connes conjecture holds for a large class of groups.

The maximal coarse Baum-Connes conjecture for spaces which admit a fibred coarse embedding into Hilbert space

We introduce a notion of fibred coarse embedding into Hilbert space for metric spaces, which is a generalization of Gromov's notion of coarse embedding into Hilbert space. It turns out that a large class of expander graphs admit such an embedding. We show that the maximal coarse Baum-Connes conjecture holds for metric spaces with bounded geometry which admit a fibred coarse embedding into Hilbert space.

A notion of geometric complexity and its application to topological rigidity

We introduce a geometric invariant, called finite decomposition complexity (FDC), to study topological rigidity of manifolds. We prove for instance that if the fundamental group of a compact aspherical manifold M has FDC, and if N is homotopy equivalent to M, then M x R^n is homeomorphic to N x R^n, for n large enough. This statement is known as the stable Borel conjecture. On the other hand, we show that the class of FDC groups includes all countable subgroups of GL(n,K), for any field K, all elementary amenable groups, and is closed under taking subgroups, extensions, free amalgamated products, HNN extensions, and direct unions.

Higher index theory for certain expanders and Gromov monster groups I

In this paper, the first of a series of two, we continue the study of higher index theory for expanders. We prove that if a sequence of graphs is an expander and the girth of the graphs tends to infinity, then the coarse Baum-Connes assembly map is injective, but not surjective, for the associated metric space $X$. Expanders with this girth property are a necessary ingredient in the construction of the so-called `Gromov monster' groups that (coarsely) contain expanders in their Cayley graphs. We use this connection to show that the Baum-Connes assembly map with certain coefficients is injective but not surjective for these groups. Using the results of the second paper in this series, we also show that the maximal Baum-Cones assembly map with these coefficients is an isomorphism.

preprint2010arXiv

Higher index theory for certain expanders and Gromov monster groups II

In this paper, the second of a series of two, we continue the study of higher index theory for expanders. We prove that if a sequence of graphs has girth tending to infinity, then the maximal coarse Baum-Connes assembly map is an isomorphism for the associated metric space $X$. As discussed in the first paper in this series, this has applications to the Baum-Connes conjecture for `Gromov monster' groups. We also introduce a new property, `geometric property (T)'. For the metric space associated to a sequence of graphs, this property is an obstruction to the maximal coarse assembly map being an isomorphism. This enables us to distinguish between expanders with girth tending to infinity, and, for example, those constructed from property (T) groups.
