Amenability and weak containment for actions of locally compact groups on $C^*$-algebras

In this work we introduce and study a new notion of amenability for actions of locally compact groups on $C^*$-algebras. Our definition extends the definition of amenability for actions of discrete groups due to Claire Anantharaman-Delaroche. We show that our definition has several characterizations and permanence properties analogous to those known in the discrete case. For example, for actions on commutative $C^*$-algebras, we show that our notion of amenability is equivalent to measurewise amenability. Combined with a recent result of Alex Bearden and Jason Crann, this also settles a long standing open problem about the equivalence of topological amenability and measurewise amenability for a second countable $G$-space $X$. We use our new notion of amenability to study when the maximal and reduced crossed products agree. One of our main results generalizes a theorem of Matsumura: we show that for an action of an exact locally compact group $G$ on a locally compact space $X$ the full and reduced crossed products $C_0(X)\rtimes_\max G$ and $C_0(X)\rtimes_{\operatorname{red}} G$ coincide if and only if the action of $G$ on $X$ is amenable. We also show that the analogue of this theorem does not hold for actions on noncommutative $C^*$-algebras. Finally, we study amenability as it relates to more detailed structure in the case of $C^*$-algebras that fibre over an appropriate $G$-space $X$, and the interaction of amenability with various regularity properties such as nuclearity, exactness, and the (L)LP, and the equivariant versions of injectivity and the WEP.

Topological property (T) for groupoids

We introduce a notion of topological property (T) for étale groupoids. This simultaneously generalizes Kazhdan's property (T) for groups and geometric property (T) for coarse spaces. One main goal is to use this property (T) to prove the existence of so-called Kazhdan projections in both maximal and reduced groupoid $C^*$-algebras, and explore applications of this to exactness, K-exactness, and the Baum-Connes conjecture. We also study various examples, and discuss the relationship with other notions of property (T) for groupoids and with a-T-menability.

Approximate ideal structures and K-theory

We introduce a notion of approximate ideal structure for a $C^*$-algebra, and use it as a tool to study $K$-theory groups. The notion is motivated by the classical Mayer-Vietoris sequence, by the theory of nuclear dimension as introduced by Winter and Zacharias, and by the theory of dynamical complexity introduced by Guentner, Yu, and the author. A major inspiration for our methods comes from recent work of Oyono-Oyono and Yu in the setting of controlled $K$-theory of filtered C*-algebras; we do not, however, use that language in this paper. We give two main applications. The first is a vanishing result for $K$-theory that is relevant to the Baum-Connes conjecture. The second is a permanence result for the Künneth formula in $C^*$-algebra $K$-theory: roughly, this says that if $A$ can be decomposed into a pair of subalgebras $(C,D)$ such that $C$, $D$, and $C\cap D$ all satisfy the Künneth formula, then $A$ itself satisfies the Künneth formula.

The minimal exact crossed product

Given a locally compact group $G$, we study the smallest exact crossed-product functor $(A,G,α)\mapsto A\rtimes_{\mathcal E} G$ on the category of $G$-$C^*$-dynamical systems. As an outcome, we show that the smallest exact crossed-product functor is automatically Morita compatible, and hence coincides with the functor $\rtimes_{\mathcal{E}}$ as introduced by Baum, Guentner, and Willett in their reformulation of the Baum-Connes conjecture (see [2]). We show that the corresponding group algebra $C_{\mathcal{E}}^*(G)$ always coincides with the reduced group algebra, thus showing that the new formulation of the Baum-Connes conjecture coincides with the classical one in the case of trivial coefficients. Erratum: After publication of this manuscript, some gaps have unfortunately been found affecting some parts of the paper. We therefore included an appendix with an erratum at the end of this paper explaining the mistakes and keeping the original published version unchanged.

Roe C*-algebra for groupoids and generalized Lichnerowicz Vanishing theorem for foliated manifolds

We introduce the concept of Roe C*-algebra for a locally compact groupoid whose unit space is in general not compact, and that is equipped with an appropriate coarse structure and Haar system. Using Connes' tangent groupoid method, we introduce an analytic index for an elliptic differential operator on a Lie groupoid equipped with additional metric structure, which takes values in the K-theory of the Roe C*-algebra. We apply our theory to derive a Lichnerowicz type vanishing result for foliations on open manifolds.

A metric approach to limit operators

We extend the limit operator machinery of Rabinovich, Roch, and Silbermann from $\mathbb{Z}^N$ to (bounded geometry, strongly) discrete metric spaces. We do not assume the presence of any group structure or action on our metric spaces. Using this machinery and recent ideas of Lindner and Seidel, we show that if a metric space X has Yu's property A, then a band-dominated operator on X is Fredholm if and only if all of its limit operators are invertible. We also show that this always fails for metric spaces without property A.

A non-amenable groupoid whose maximal and reduced $C^*$-algebras are the same

We construct a locally compact groupoid with the properties in the title. Our example is based closely on constructions used by Higson, Lafforgue, and Skandalis in their work on counterexamples to the Baum-Connes conjecture. It is a bundle of countable groups over the one point compactification of the natural numbers, and is Hausdorff, second countable and étale.

Dynamic Asymptotic Dimension: relation to dynamics, topology, coarse geometry, and $C^*$-algebras

We introduce dynamic asymptotic dimension, a notion of dimension for actions of discrete groups on locally compact spaces, and more generally for locally compact étale groupoids. We study our notion for minimal actions of the integer group, its relation with conditions used by Bartels, Lück, and Reich in the context of controlled topology, and its connections with Gromov's theory of asymptotic dimension. We also show that dynamic asymptotic dimension gives bounds on the nuclear dimension of Winter and Zacharias for C*-algebras associated to dynamical systems. Dynamic asymptotic dimension also has implications for K-theory and manifold topology: these will be drawn out in subsequent work.

Exotic Crossed Products

An exotic crossed product is a way of associating a C*-algebra to each C*-dynamical system that generalizes the well-known universal and reduced crossed products. Exotic crossed products provide natural generalizations of, and tools to study, exotic group C*-algebras as recently considered by Brown-Guentner and others. They also form an essential part of a recent program to reformulate the Baum-Connes conjecture with coefficients so as to mollify the counterexamples caused by failures of exactness. In this paper, we survey some constructions of exotic group algebras and exotic crossed products. Summarising our earlier work, we single out a large class of crossed products --- the correspondence functors --- that have many properties known for the maximal and reduced crossed products: for example, they extend to categories of equivariant correspondences, and have a compatible descent morphism in KK-theory. Combined with known results on K-amenability and the Baum-Connes conjecture, this allows us to compute the K-theory of many exotic group algebras. It also gives new information about the reformulation of the Baum-Connes Conjecture mentioned above. Finally, we present some new results relating exotic crossed products for a group and its closed subgroups, and discuss connections with the reformulated Baum-Connes conjecture.

Exotic crossed products and the Baum-Connes conjecture

We study general properties of exotic crossed-product functors and characterise those which extend to functors on equivariant C*-algebra categories based on correspondences. We show that every such functor allows the construction of a descent in KK-theory and we use this to show that all crossed products by correspondence functors of K-amenable groups are KK-equivalent. We also show that for second countable groups the minimal exact Morita compatible crossed-product functor used in the new formulation of the Baum-Connes conjecture by Baum, Guentner and Willett extends to correspondences when restricted to separable G-C*-algebras. It therefore allows a descent in KK-theory for separable systems.

Expanders, exact crossed products, and the Baum-Connes conjecture

We reformulate the Baum-Connes conjecture with coefficients by introducing a new crossed product functor for C*-algebras. All confirming examples for the original Baum-Connes conjecture remain confirming examples for the reformulated conjecture, and at present there are no known counterexamples to the reformulated conjecture. Moreover, some of the known expander-based counterexamples to the original Baum-Connes conjecture become confirming examples for our reformulated conjecture.

Geometric Property (T)

This paper discusses `geometric property (T)'. This is a property of metric spaces introduced in earlier work of the authors for its applications to K-theory. Geometric property (T) is a strong form of `expansion property': in particular for a sequence of finite graphs $(X_n)$, it is strictly stronger than $(X_n)$ being an expander in the sense that the Cheeger constants $h(X_n)$ are bounded below. We show here that geometric property (T) is a coarse invariant, i.e. depends only on the large-scale geometry of a metric space $X$. We also discuss the relationships between geometric property (T) and amenability, property (T), and various coarse geometric notions of a-T-menability. In particular, we show that property (T) for a residually finite group is characterised by geometric property (T) for its finite quotients.

Random graphs, weak coarse embeddings, and higher index theory

This paper studies higher index theory for a random sequence of bounded degree, finite graphs with diameter tending to infinity. We show that in a natural model for such random sequences the following hold almost surely: the coarse Baum-Connes assembly map is injective; the coarse Baum-Connes assembly map is not surjective; the maximal coarse Baum-Connes assembly map is an isomorphism. These results are closely tied to issues of expansion in graphs: in particular, we also show that such random sequences almost surely do not have geometric property (T), a strong form of expansion. The key geometric ingredients in the proof are due to Mendel and Naor: in our context, their results imply that a random sequence of graphs almost surely admits a weak form of coarse embedding into Hilbert space.

A finite dimensional approach to the strong Novikov conjecture

The aim of this paper is to introduce an approach to the (strong) Novikov conjecture based on continuous families of finite dimensional representations: this is partly inspired by ideas of Lusztig using the Atiyah-Singer families index theorem, and partly by Carlsson's deformation $K$--theory. Using this approach, we give new proofs of the strong Novikov conjecture in several interesting cases, including crystallographic groups and surface groups. The method presented here is relatively accessible compared with other proofs of the Novikov conjecture, and also yields some information about the $K$--theory and cohomology of representation spaces.

On Rigidity of Roe algebras

Roe algebras are C*-algebras built using large-scale (or 'coarse') aspects of a metric space (X,d). In the special case that X=G is a finitely generated group and d is a word metric, the simplest Roe algebra associated to (G,d) is isomorphic to the reduced crossed product C*-algebra l^\infty(G)\rtimes G. Roe algebras are 'coarse invariants', in the sense that if X and Y are coarsely equivalent metric spaces, then their Roe algebras are isomorphic. Motivated in part by the coarse Baum-Connes conjecture, we ask if there is a converse to the above statement: that is, if X and Y are metric spaces with isomorphic Roe algebras, must X and Y be coarsely equivalent? We show that for very large classes of spaces the answer to this question, and some related questions, is 'yes'. This can be thought of as a 'C*-rigidity result': it shows that the Roe algebra construction preserves a large amount of information about the space, and is thus surprisingly 'rigid'. As an example of our results, in the group case we have that if G and H are finitely generated elementary amenable, hyperbolic, or linear, groups such that the crossed products l^\infty(G)\rtimes G and l^\infty(H)\rtimes H are isomorphic, then G and H are quasi-isometric.

Uniform Local Amenability

The main results of this paper show that various coarse (`large scale') geometric properties are closely related. In particular, we show that property A implies the operator norm localisation property, and thus that norms of operators associated to a very large class of metric spaces can be effectively estimated. The main tool is a new property called uniform local amenability. This property is easy to negate, which we use to study some `bad' spaces. We also generalise and reprove a theorem of Nowak relating amenability and asymptotic dimension in the quantitative setting.

Maximal and reduced Roe algebras of coarsely embeddable spaces

Gong, Wang and Yu introduced a maximal, or universal, version of the Roe C*-algebra associated to a metric space. We study the relationship between this maximal Roe algebra and the usual version, in both the uniform and non-uniform cases. The main result is that if a (uniformly discrete, bounded geometry) metric space X coarsely embeds in a Hilbert space, then the canonical map between the maximal and usual (uniform) Roe algebras induces an isomorphism on K-theory. We also give a simple proof that if X has property A, then the maximal and usual (uniform) Roe algebras are the same. These two results are natural coarse-geometric analogues of certain well-known implications of a-T-menability and amenability for group C*-algebras. The techniques used are E-theoretic, building on work of Higson-Kasparov-Trout and Yu.

Higher index theory for certain expanders and Gromov monster groups I

In this paper, the first of a series of two, we continue the study of higher index theory for expanders. We prove that if a sequence of graphs is an expander and the girth of the graphs tends to infinity, then the coarse Baum-Connes assembly map is injective, but not surjective, for the associated metric space $X$. Expanders with this girth property are a necessary ingredient in the construction of the so-called `Gromov monster' groups that (coarsely) contain expanders in their Cayley graphs. We use this connection to show that the Baum-Connes assembly map with certain coefficients is injective but not surjective for these groups. Using the results of the second paper in this series, we also show that the maximal Baum-Cones assembly map with these coefficients is an isomorphism.

preprint2010arXiv

Higher index theory for certain expanders and Gromov monster groups II

In this paper, the second of a series of two, we continue the study of higher index theory for expanders. We prove that if a sequence of graphs has girth tending to infinity, then the maximal coarse Baum-Connes assembly map is an isomorphism for the associated metric space $X$. As discussed in the first paper in this series, this has applications to the Baum-Connes conjecture for `Gromov monster' groups. We also introduce a new property, `geometric property (T)'. For the metric space associated to a sequence of graphs, this property is an obstruction to the maximal coarse assembly map being an isomorphism. This enables us to distinguish between expanders with girth tending to infinity, and, for example, those constructed from property (T) groups.
