Evasive subspaces, generalized rank weights and near MRD codes

We revisit and extend the connections between $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}$-linear rank-metric codes and evasive $\mathbb{F}_q$-subspaces of $\mathbb{F}_{q^m}^k$. We give a unifying framework in which we prove in an elementary way how the parameters of a rank-metric code are related to special geometric properties of the associated evasive subspace, with a particular focus on the generalized rank weights. In this way, we can also provide alternative and very short proofs of known results on scattered subspaces. We then use this simplified point of view in order to get a geometric characterization of near MRD codes and a clear bound on their maximal length. Finally we connect the theory of quasi-MRD codes with $h$-scattered subspaces of maximum dimension, extending to all the parameters sets the already known results on MRD codes.

MRD codes with maximum idealizers

Left and right idealizers are important invariants of linear rank-distance codes. In the case of maximum rank-distance (MRD for short) codes in $\mathbb{F}_q^{n\times n}$ the idealizers have been proved to be isomorphic to finite fields of size at most $q^n$. Up to now, the only known MRD codes with maximum left and right idealizers are generalized Gabidulin codes, which were first constructed in 1978 by Delsarte and later generalized by Kshevetskiy and Gabidulin in 2005. In this paper we classify MRD codes in $\mathbb{F}_q^{n\times n}$ for $n\leq 9$ with maximum left and right idealizers and connect them to Moore-type matrices. Apart from generalized Gabidulin codes, it turns out that there is a further family of rank-distance codes providing MRD ones with maximum idealizers for $n=7$, $q$ odd and for $n=8$, $q\equiv 1 \pmod 3$. These codes are not equivalent to any previously known MRD code. Moreover, we show that this family of rank-distance codes does not provide any further examples for $n\geq 9$.

Quasinormal-mode modeling and design in nonlinear nano-optics

Based on quasinormal-mode theory, we propose a novel approach enabling a deep analytical insight into the multi-parameter design and optimization of nonlinear photonic structures at subwavelength scale. A key distinction of our method from previous formulations relying on multipolar Mie-scattering expansions is that it directly exploits the natural resonant modes of the nanostructures, which provide the field enhancement to achieve significant nonlinear efficiency. Thanks to closed-form expression for the nonlinear overlap integral between the interacting modes, we illustrate the potential of our method with a two-order-of-magnitude boost of second harmonic generation in a semiconductor nanostructure, by engineering both the sign of $χ^{(2)}$ at subwavelength scale and the structure of the pump beam.

A characterization of linearized polynomials with maximum kernel

We provide sufficient and necessary conditions for the coefficients of a $q$-polynomial $f$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ which ensure that the number of distinct roots of $f$ in $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ equals the degree of $f$. We say that these polynomials have maximum kernel. As an application we study in detail $q$-polynomials of degree $q^{n-2}$ over $\mathbb{F}_{q^n}$ which have maximum kernel and for $n\leq 6$ we list all $q$-polynomials with maximum kernel. We also obtain information on the splitting field of an arbitrary $q$-polynomial. Analogous results are proved for $q^s$-polynomials as well, where $\gcd(s,n)=1$.

Second-harmonic generation from hyperbolic plasmonic nanorod metamaterial slab

Hyperbolic plasmonic metamaterials provide numerous opportunities for designing unusual linear and nonlinear optical properties. We show that the modal overlap of fundamental and second-harmonic light in an anisotropic plasmonic metamaterial slab results in the broadband enhancement of radiated second-harmonic intensity by up to 2 orders of magnitudes for TM- and TE-polarized fundamental light, compared to a smooth Au film under TM-polarised illumination. The results open up possibilities to design tuneable frequency-doubling metamaterial with the goal to overcome limitations associated with classical phase matching conditions in thick nonlinear crystals.

On Strong convergence of Halpern's method using averaged type mappings

In this paper, inspired by Iemoto and Takahashi [S. Iemoto, W. Takahashi, Nonlinear Analysis 71, (2009), 2082-2089], we study the Halpern's method to approximate strongly fixed points of a nonexpansive mapping and of a nonspreading mapping. A crucial tool in our results is the regularization with the averaged type mappings [C. Byrne, Inverse Probl. 20, (2004), 103-120].

The isotopism problem of a class of 6-dimensional rank 2 semifields and its solution

In [U. Dempwolff: \textit{More Translation Planes and Semifields from Dembowski-Ostrom Polynomials}, Designs, Codes, Cryptogr. \textbf{68} (1-3) (2013), 81--103] three classes of rank two presemifields of order $q^{2n}$, with $q$ and $n$ odd, were exhibited, leaving as an open problem the isotopy issue. In [M. Lavrauw, G. Marino, O. Polverino, R. Trombetti: \textit{Solution to an isotopism question concerning rank 2 semifields}, J. Comb. Des., to appear. DOI: 10.1002/jcd.21382], the authors faced with this problem answering the question whether these presemifields are new for $n>3$. In this paper we complete the study solving the case $n=3$.

Regarding the "Comments on 'Near-field interference for the unidirectional excitation of electromagnetic guided modes' " by Lee et al

We would like to clarify the misunderstanding caused by comment [arXiv:1306.5068 (2013)] on our article [Science 340, 328 (2013)]. The vectorial near-field interference effect described in our article is a fundamental physical process valid for all kinds of waves, both photonic and plasmonic, and the discovery of this effect is the main topic of the paper. The experiment using a slit in a metal film was one possible practical realization, but the effect has recently been experimentally validated in several other structures, as described in this reply.

Solution to an isotopism question concerning rank 2 semifields

In [U. Dempwolff: More Translation Planes and Semifields from Dembowski-Ostrom Polynomials, Designs, Codes, Cryptogr. \textbf{68} (1-3) (2013), 81-103], the author gives a construction of three classes of rank two semifields of order $q^{2n}$, with $q$ and $n$ odd, using Dembowski-Ostrom polynomials. The question whether these semifields are new, i.e. not isotopic to previous constructions, is left as an open problem. In this paper we solve this problem for $n>3$, in particular we prove that two of these classes, labeled $D_{A}$ and $D_{AB}$, are new for $n>3$, whereas presemifields in family $D_{B}$ are isotopic to Generalized Twisted Fields for each $n\geq 3$.

Hyperovals of $H(3,q^2)$ when $q$ is even

For even $q$, a group $G$ isomorphic to $PSL(2,q)$ stabilizes a Baer conic inside a symplectic subquadrangle ${\cal W}(3,q)$ of ${\cal H}(3,q^2)$. In this paper the action of $G$ on points and lines of ${\cal H}(3,q^2)$ is investigated. A construction is given of an infinite family of hyperovals of size $2(q^3-q)$ of ${\cal H}(3,q^2)$, with each hyperoval having the property that its automorphism group contains $G$. Finally it is shown that the hyperovals constructed are not isomorphic to known hyperovals.

A Minimum problem for finite sets of real numbers with non-negative sum

Let $n$ and $r$ be two integers such that $0 < r \le n$; we denote by $γ(n,r)$ [$η(n,r)$] the minimum [maximum] number of the non-negative partial sums of a sum $\sum_{1=1}^n a_i \ge 0$, where $a_1, \cdots, a_n$ are $n$ real numbers arbitrarily chosen in such a way that $r$ of them are non-negative and the remaining $n-r$ are negative. Inspired by some interesting extremal combinatorial sum problems raised by Manickam, Miklös and Singhi in 1987 \cite{ManMik87} and 1988 \cite{ManSin88} we study the following two problems: \noindent$(P1)$ {\it which are the values of $γ(n,r)$ and $η(n,r)$ for each $n$ and $r$, $0 < r \le n$?} \noindent$(P2)$ {\it if $q$ is an integer such that $γ(n,r) \le q \le η(n,r)$, can we find $n$ real numbers $a_1, \cdots, a_n$, such that $r$ of them are non-negative and the remaining $n-r$ are negative with $\sum_{1=1}^n a_i \ge 0$, such that the number of the non-negative sums formed from these numbers is exactly $q$?} \noindent We prove that the solution of the problem $(P1)$ is given by $γ(n,r) = 2^{n-1}$ and $η(n,r) = 2^n - 2^{n-r}$. We provide a partial result of the latter problem showing that the answer is affirmative for the weighted boolean maps. With respect to the problem $(P2)$ such maps (that we will introduce in the present paper) can be considered a generalization of the multisets $a_1, \cdots, a_n$ with $\sum_{1=1}^n a_i \ge 0$. More precisely we prove that for each $q$ such that $γ(n,r) \le q \le η(n,r)$ there exists a weighted boolean map having exactly $q$ positive boolean values.

On isotopisms and strong isotopisms of commutative presemifields

In this paper we prove that the $P(q,\ell)$ ($q$ odd prime power and $\ell>1$ odd) commutative semifields constructed by Bierbrauer in \cite{BierbrauerSub} are isotopic to some commutative presemifields constructed by Budaghyan and Helleseth in \cite{BuHe2008}. Also, we show that they are strongly isotopic if and only if $q\equiv 1(mod\,4)$. Consequently, for each $q\equiv -1(mod\,4)$ there exist isotopic commutative presemifields of order $q^{2\ell}$ ($\ell>1$ odd) defining CCZ--inequivalent planar DO polynomials.
