Small 3-fold blocking sets in PG(2,pn)\mathrm{PG}(2,p^n)

A tt-fold blocking set of the finite Desarguesian plane PG(2,pn)\mathrm{PG}(2,p^n), pp prime, is a set of points meeting each line of the plane in at least tt points. The minimum size of such sets is of interest for numerous reasons; however, even the minimum size of nontrivial blocking sets (i.e. 11-fold blocking sets not containing a line) in PG(2,pn)\mathrm{PG}(2,p^n) is an open question when n≥5n\geq 5 is odd. For n>1n>1 the conjectured lower bound for this size is (pn+pn(s−1)/s+1)(p^n+p^{n(s-1)/s}+1), where pn/sp^{n/s} is the size of the largest proper subfield of Fpn\mathbb{F}_{p^n}. Since the union of tt pairwise disjoint nontrivial blocking sets is a tt-fold blocking set, it is conjectured that when pn/sp^{n/s} is large enough w.r.t. tt, then the minimum size of a tt-fold blocking set in PG(2,pn)\mathrm{PG}(2,p^n) is t(pn+pn(s−1)/s+1)t(p^n+p^{n(s-1)/s}+1). If nn is even, then the decomposition of the plane into disjoint Baer subplanes gives a tt-fold blocking set of this size. However, for odd nn, the existence of such sets is an unsolved problem in most cases. In this paper, we construct 33-fold blocking sets of conjectured size. These blocking sets are obtained as the disjoint union of three linear blocking sets of Rédei type, and they lie on the same orbit of the projectivity (x:y:z)↦(z:x:y)(x:y:z)\mapsto (z:x:y).

On regular sets of affine type in finite Desarguesian planes and related codes

In this paper, we consider point sets of finite Desarguesian planes whose multisets of intersection numbers with lines is the same for all but one exceptional parallel class of lines. We call such sets regular of affine type. When the lines of the exceptional parallel class have the same intersection numbers, then we call these sets regular of pointed type. Classical examples are e.g. unitals; a detailed study and constructions of such sets with few intersection numbers is due to Hirschfeld and Szőnyi from 1991. We here provide some general construction methods for regular sets and describe a few infinite families. The members of one of these families have the size of a unital and meet affine lines of PG(2,q2)\mathrm{PG}(2, q^2) in one of 44 possible intersection numbers, each of them congruent to 11 modulo q\sqrt{q}. As a byproduct, we determine the intersection sizes of the Hermitian curve defined over GF(q2)\mathrm{GF}(q^2) with suitable rational curves of degree q\sqrt{q} and we obtain q\sqrt{q}-divisible codes with 55 non-zero weights. We also determine the weight enumerator of the codes arising from the general constructions modulus some qq-powers.

Generalizing Korchmáros--Mazzocca arcs

In this paper, we generalize the so called Korchmáros--Mazzocca arcs, that is, point sets of size q+tq+t intersecting each line in 0,20, 2 or tt points in a finite projective plane of order qq. For t≠2t\neq 2, this means that each point of the point set is incident with exactly one line meeting the point set in tt points. In PG(2,pn)\mathrm{PG}(2,p^n), we change 22 in the definition above to any integer mm and describe all examples when mm or tt is not divisible by pp. We also study mod pp variants of these objects, give examples and under some conditions we prove the existence of a nucleus.

MRD codes with maximum idealizers

Left and right idealizers are important invariants of linear rank-distance codes. In the case of maximum rank-distance (MRD for short) codes in Fqn×n\mathbb{F}_q^{n\times n} the idealizers have been proved to be isomorphic to finite fields of size at most qnq^n. Up to now, the only known MRD codes with maximum left and right idealizers are generalized Gabidulin codes, which were first constructed in 1978 by Delsarte and later generalized by Kshevetskiy and Gabidulin in 2005. In this paper we classify MRD codes in Fqn×n\mathbb{F}_q^{n\times n} for n≤9n\leq 9 with maximum left and right idealizers and connect them to Moore-type matrices. Apart from generalized Gabidulin codes, it turns out that there is a further family of rank-distance codes providing MRD ones with maximum idealizers for n=7n=7, qq odd and for n=8n=8, q≡1(mod3)q\equiv 1 \pmod 3. These codes are not equivalent to any previously known MRD code. Moreover, we show that this family of rank-distance codes does not provide any further examples for n≥9n\geq 9.

A characterization of linearized polynomials with maximum kernel

We provide sufficient and necessary conditions for the coefficients of a qq-polynomial ff over Fqn\mathbb{F}_{q^n} which ensure that the number of distinct roots of ff in Fqn\mathbb{F}_{q^n} equals the degree of ff. We say that these polynomials have maximum kernel. As an application we study in detail qq-polynomials of degree qn−2q^{n-2} over Fqn\mathbb{F}_{q^n} which have maximum kernel and for n≤6n\leq 6 we list all qq-polynomials with maximum kernel. We also obtain information on the splitting field of an arbitrary qq-polynomial. Analogous results are proved for qsq^s-polynomials as well, where gcd⁡(s,n)=1\gcd(s,n)=1.

On bisecants of Rédei type blocking sets and applications

We use polynomial techniques to derive structural results on Rédei type blocking sets from information on their bisecants. We apply our results to point sets of PG(2,q)PG(2,q) with few odd-secants. In particular, we improve the lower bound of Balister, Bollobás, Füredi and Thompson on the number of odd-secants of a (q+2)(q+2)-set in PG(2,q)PG(2,q) and we answer a related open question of Vandendriessche. We prove structural results for semiovals and derive the non existence of semiovals of size q+3q+3 when 3 does not divide qq and q>5q>5. This extends a result of Blokhuis who classified semiovals of size q+2q+2, and a result of Bartoli who classified semiovals of size q+3q+3 when q≤17q\leq 17. In the qq even case we can say more applying a result of Szőnyi and Weiner about the stability of sets of even type. We also obtain new proof to a result of Gács and Weiner about (q+t,t)(q+t,t)-arcs of type (0,2,t)(0,2,t) and to one part of a result of Ball, Blokhuis, Brouwer, Storme and Szőnyi about functions over GF(q)GF(q) determining less than (q+3)/2(q+3)/2 directions.

On scattered linear sets of pseudoregulus type in PG(1,qt)\mathrm{PG}(1,q^t)

Scattered linear sets of pseudoregulus type in PG(1,qt)\mathrm{PG}(1,q^t) have been defined and investigated in [G. Lunardon, G. Marino, O. Polverino, R. Trombetti: Maximum scattered linear sets of pseudoregulus type and the Segre Variety Sn,n{\cal S}_{n,n}. J. Algebr. Comb. 39 (2014), 807--831.; G. Donati, N. Durante: Scattered linear sets generated by collineations between pencils of lines. J. Algebr. Comb. 40 (2014), 1121-1134]. The aim of this paper is to continue such an investigation. Properties of a scattered linear set of pseudoregulus type, say LL, are proved by means of three different ways to obtain LL: (i) as projection of a qq-order canonical subgeometry [G. Lunardon, O. Polverino: Translation ovoids of orthogonal polar spaces. Forum Math. 16 (2004), 663-669], (ii) as a set whose image under the field reduction map is the hypersurface of degree tt in PG(2t−1,q)\mathrm{PG}(2t-1,q) studied in [M. Lavrauw, J. Sheekey, C. Zanella: On embeddings of minimum dimension of PG(n,q)×PG(n,q)\mathrm{PG}(n,q)\times \mathrm{PG}(n,q). Des. Codes Cryptogr. 74 (2015), 427-440], (iii) as exterior splash, by the correspondence described in [M. Lavrauw, J. Sheekey, C. Zanella: On embeddings of minimum dimension of PG(n,q)×PG(n,q)\mathrm{PG}(n,q)\times \mathrm{PG}(n,q). Des. Codes Cryptogr. 74 (2015), 427-440]. In particular, given a canonical subgeometry ΣΣ of PG(t−1,qt)\mathrm{PG}(t-1,q^t), necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the projection of ΣΣ with center a (t−3)(t-3)-subspace to be a linear set of pseudoregulus type. Furthermore, the qq-order sublines are counted and geometrically described.

On the equivalence of linear sets

Let LL be a linear set of pseudoregulus type in a line ℓ\ell in Σ∗=PG(t−1,qt)Σ^*=\mathrm{PG}(t-1,q^t), t=5t=5 or t>6t>6. We provide examples of qq-order canonical subgeometries Σ1, Σ2⊂Σ∗Σ_1,\, Σ_2 \subset Σ^* such that there is a (t−3)(t-3)-space Γ⊂Σ∗∖(Σ1∪Σ2∪ℓ)Γ\subset Σ^*\setminus (Σ_1 \cup Σ_2 \cup \ell) with the property that for i=1,2i=1,2, LL is the projection of ΣiΣ_i from center ΓΓ and there exists no collineation ϕϕ of Σ∗Σ^* such that Γϕ=ΓΓ^ϕ=Γ and Σ1ϕ=Σ2Σ_1^ϕ=Σ_2. Condition (ii) given in Theorem 3 in Lavrauw and Van de Voorde (Des. Codes Cryptogr. 56:89-104, 2010) states the existence of a collineation between the projecting configurations (each of them consisting of a center and a subgeometry), which give rise by means of projections to two linear sets. It follows from our examples that this condition is not necessary for the equivalence of two linear sets as stated there. We characterize the linear sets for which the condition above is actually necessary.

Semiarcs with a long secant in PG(2,q)\mathrm{PG}(2,q)

A tt-semiarc is a pointset St{\cal S}_t with the property that the number of tangent lines to St{\cal S}_t at each of its points is tt. We show that if a small tt-semiarc St{\cal S}_t in PG(2,q)\mathrm{PG}(2,q) has a large collinear subset K{\cal K}, then the tangents to St{\cal S}_t at the points of K{\cal K} can be blocked by tt points not in K{\cal K}. We also show that small tt-semiarcs are related to certain small blocking sets. Some characterization theorems for small semiarcs with large collinear subsets in PG(2,q)\mathrm{PG}(2,q) are given.

Semiarcs with long secants

In a projective plane ΠqΠ_q of order qq, a non-empty point set St{\cal S}_t is a tt-semiarc if the number of tangent lines to St{\cal S}_t at each of its points is tt. If St{\cal S}_t is a tt-semiarc in ΠqΠ_q, t<qt<q, then each line intersects St{\cal S}_t in at most q+1−tq+1-t points. Dover proved that semiovals (semiarcs with t=1t=1) containing qq collinear points exist in ΠqΠ_q only if q<3q<3. We show that if t>1t>1, then tt-semiarcs with q+1−tq+1-t collinear points exist only if t≥q−1t\geq \sqrt{q-1}. In PG(2,q)\mathrm{PG}(2,q) we prove the lower bound t≥(q−1)/2t\geq(q-1)/2, with equality only if St{\cal S}_t is a blocking set of Rédei type of size 3(q+1)/23(q+1)/2. We call the symmetric difference of two lines, with tt further points removed from each line, a VtV_t-configuration. We give conditions ensuring a tt-semiarc to contain a VtV_t-configuration and give the complete characterization of such tt-semiarcs in PG(2,q)\mathrm{PG}(2,q).
