Classifications and constructions of minimum size linear sets

This paper aims to study linear sets of minimum size in the projective line, that is Fq\mathbb{F}_q-linear sets of rank kk in PG(1,qn)\mathrm{PG}(1,q^n) admitting one point of weight one and having size qk−1+1q^{k-1}+1. Examples of these linear sets have been found by Lunardon and the second author (2000) and, more recently, by Jena and Van de Voorde (2021). However, classification results for minimum size linear sets are known only for k≤5k\leq 5. In this paper we provide classification results for those LUL_U admitting two points with complementary weights. We construct new examples and also study the related ΓL(2,qn)\mathrm{ΓL}(2,q^n)-equivalence issue. These results solve an open problem posed by Jena and Van de Voorde. The main tool relies on two results by Bachoc, Serra and Zémor (2017 and 2018) on the linear analogues of Kneser's and Vosper's theorems. We then conclude the paper pointing out a connection between critical pairs and linear sets, obtaining also some classification results for critical pairs.

Connections between scattered linear sets and MRD-codes

The aim of this paper is to survey on the known results on maximum scattered linear sets and MRD-codes. In particular, we investigate the link between these two areas. In "A new family of linear maximum rank distance codes" (2016) Sheekey showed how maximum scattered linear sets of PG(1,qn)\mathrm{PG}(1,q^n) define square MRD-codes. Later in "Maximum scattered linear sets and MRD-codes" (2017) maximum scattered linear sets in PG(r−1,qn)\mathrm{PG}(r-1,q^n), r>2r>2, were used to construct non square MRD-codes. Here, we point out a new relation regarding the other direction. We also provide an alternative proof of the well-known Blokhuis-Lavrauw's bound for the rank of maximum scattered linear sets shown in "Scattered spaces with respect to a spread in PG(n,q)\mathrm{PG}(n,q)" (2000).

Linear sets from projection of Desarguesian spreads

Every linear set in a Galois space is the projection of a subgeometry, and most known characterizations of linear sets are given under this point of view. For instance, scattered linear sets of pseudoregulus type are obtained by considering a Desarguesian spread of a subgeometry and projecting from a vertex which is spanned by all but two director spaces. In this paper we introduce the concept of linear sets of hh-pseudoregulus type, which turns out to be projected from the span of an arbitrary number of director spaces of a Desarguesian spread of a subgeometry. Among these linear sets, we characterize those which are hh-scattered and solve the equivalence problem between them; a key role is played by an algebraic tool recently introduced in the literature and known as Moore exponent set. As a byproduct, we classify asymptotically hh-scattered linear sets of hh-pseudoregulus type.

MRD codes with maximum idealizers

Left and right idealizers are important invariants of linear rank-distance codes. In the case of maximum rank-distance (MRD for short) codes in Fqn×n\mathbb{F}_q^{n\times n} the idealizers have been proved to be isomorphic to finite fields of size at most qnq^n. Up to now, the only known MRD codes with maximum left and right idealizers are generalized Gabidulin codes, which were first constructed in 1978 by Delsarte and later generalized by Kshevetskiy and Gabidulin in 2005. In this paper we classify MRD codes in Fqn×n\mathbb{F}_q^{n\times n} for n≤9n\leq 9 with maximum left and right idealizers and connect them to Moore-type matrices. Apart from generalized Gabidulin codes, it turns out that there is a further family of rank-distance codes providing MRD ones with maximum idealizers for n=7n=7, qq odd and for n=8n=8, q≡1(mod3)q\equiv 1 \pmod 3. These codes are not equivalent to any previously known MRD code. Moreover, we show that this family of rank-distance codes does not provide any further examples for n≥9n\geq 9.

On certain linearized polynomials with high degree and kernel of small dimension

Let ff be the Fq\mathbb{F}_q-linear map over Fq2n\mathbb{F}_{q^{2n}} defined by x↦x+axqs+bxqn+sx\mapsto x+ax^{q^s}+bx^{q^{n+s}} with gcd⁡(n,s)=1\gcd(n,s)=1. It is known that the kernel of ff has dimension at most 22, as proved by Csajbók et al. in "A new family of MRD-codes" (2018). For nn big enough, e.g. n≥5n\geq5 when s=1s=1, we classify the values of b/ab/a such that the kernel of ff has dimension at most 11. To this aim, we translate the problem into the study of some algebraic curves of small degree with respect to the degree of ff; this allows to use intersection theory and function field theory together with the Hasse-Weil bound. Our result implies a non-scatteredness result for certain high degree scattered binomials, and the asymptotic classification of a family of rank metric codes.

On the number of roots of some linearized polynomials

Linearized polynomials appear in many different contexts, such as rank metric codes, cryptography and linear sets, and the main issue regards the characterization of the number of roots from their coefficients. Results of this type have been already proved in [7,10,24]. In this paper we provide bounds and characterizations on the number of roots of linearized polynomials of this form ax+b0xσ+b1xσqn+b2xσq2n+…+bt−1xσqn(t−1)∈Fqnt[x], ax+b_0x^σ+b_1x^{σq^n}+b_2x^{σq^{2n}}+\ldots+b_{t-1}x^{σq^{n(t-1)}} \in \mathbb{F}_{q^{nt}}[x], with σσ a generator of the Galois group Gal(Fqn ⁣:Fq)\mathrm{Gal}(\mathbb{F}_{q^n}\colon\mathbb{F}_q). Also, we characterize the number of roots of such polynomials directly from their coefficients, dealing with matrices which are much smaller than the relative Dickson matrices and the companion matrices used in the previous papers. Furthermore, we develop a method to find explicitly the roots of a such polynomial by finding the roots of a qnq^n-polynomial. Finally, as an applications of the above results, we present a family of linear sets of the projective line whose points have a small spectrum of possible weights, containing most of the known families of scattered linear sets. In particular, we carefully study the linear sets in PG(1,q6)\mathrm{PG}(1,q^6) presented in [9].

A characterization of linearized polynomials with maximum kernel

We provide sufficient and necessary conditions for the coefficients of a qq-polynomial ff over Fqn\mathbb{F}_{q^n} which ensure that the number of distinct roots of ff in Fqn\mathbb{F}_{q^n} equals the degree of ff. We say that these polynomials have maximum kernel. As an application we study in detail qq-polynomials of degree qn−2q^{n-2} over Fqn\mathbb{F}_{q^n} which have maximum kernel and for n≤6n\leq 6 we list all qq-polynomials with maximum kernel. We also obtain information on the splitting field of an arbitrary qq-polynomial. Analogous results are proved for qsq^s-polynomials as well, where gcd⁡(s,n)=1\gcd(s,n)=1.

The isotopism problem of a class of 6-dimensional rank 2 semifields and its solution

In [U. Dempwolff: \textit{More Translation Planes and Semifields from Dembowski-Ostrom Polynomials}, Designs, Codes, Cryptogr. \textbf{68} (1-3) (2013), 81--103] three classes of rank two presemifields of order q2nq^{2n}, with qq and nn odd, were exhibited, leaving as an open problem the isotopy issue. In [M. Lavrauw, G. Marino, O. Polverino, R. Trombetti: \textit{Solution to an isotopism question concerning rank 2 semifields}, J. Comb. Des., to appear. DOI: 10.1002/jcd.21382], the authors faced with this problem answering the question whether these presemifields are new for n>3n>3. In this paper we complete the study solving the case n=3n=3.

Solution to an isotopism question concerning rank 2 semifields

In [U. Dempwolff: More Translation Planes and Semifields from Dembowski-Ostrom Polynomials, Designs, Codes, Cryptogr. \textbf{68} (1-3) (2013), 81-103], the author gives a construction of three classes of rank two semifields of order q2nq^{2n}, with qq and nn odd, using Dembowski-Ostrom polynomials. The question whether these semifields are new, i.e. not isotopic to previous constructions, is left as an open problem. In this paper we solve this problem for n>3n>3, in particular we prove that two of these classes, labeled DAD_{A} and DABD_{AB}, are new for n>3n>3, whereas presemifields in family DBD_{B} are isotopic to Generalized Twisted Fields for each n≥3n\geq 3.

On isotopisms and strong isotopisms of commutative presemifields

In this paper we prove that the P(q,ℓ)P(q,\ell) (qq odd prime power and ℓ>1\ell>1 odd) commutative semifields constructed by Bierbrauer in \cite{BierbrauerSub} are isotopic to some commutative presemifields constructed by Budaghyan and Helleseth in \cite{BuHe2008}. Also, we show that they are strongly isotopic if and only if q≡1(mod 4)q\equiv 1(mod\,4). Consequently, for each q≡−1(mod 4)q\equiv -1(mod\,4) there exist isotopic commutative presemifields of order q2ℓq^{2\ell} (ℓ>1\ell>1 odd) defining CCZ--inequivalent planar DO polynomials.
