Twisted conjugacy classes in residually finite groups

We prove for residually finite groups the following long standing conjecture: the number of twisted conjugacy classes of an automorphism of a finitely generated group is equal (if it is finite) to the number of finite dimensional irreducible unitary representations being invariant for the dual of this automorphism. Also, we prove that any finitely generated residually finite non-amenable group has the R-infinity property (any automorphism has infinitely many twisted conjugacy classes). This gives a lot of new examples and covers many known classes of such groups.

Twisted conjugacy separable groups

We study the notion of twisted conjugacy separability (essentially introduced in our previous paper for a proof of twisted version of Burnside-Frobenius theorem) and some related properties. We give examples of groups with and without this property and study its behavior under some extensions. An affirmative answer to the twisted Dehn conjugacy problem for polycyclic-by-finite group is obtained. Some problems for the further study are indicated.

Quantization of branched coverings

We identify branched coverings (continuous open surjections p:Y->X of Hausdorff spaces with uniformly bounded number of pre-images) with Hilbert C*-modules C(Y) over C(X) and with faithful unital positive conditional expectations E:C(Y)->C(X) topologically of index-finite type. The case of non-branched coverings corresponds to projective finitely generated modules and expectations (algebraically) of index-finite type. This allows to define non-commutative analogues of (branched) coverings.

A twisted Burnside theorem for countable groups and Reidemeister numbers

The purpose of the present paper is to prove for finitely generated groups of type I the following conjecture of A.Fel'shtyn and R.Hill, which is a generalization of the classical Burnside theorem. Let G be a countable discrete group, f one of its automorphisms, R(f) the number of f-conjugacy classes, and S(f)=# Fix (f^) the number of f-invariant equivalence classes of irreducible unitary representations. If one of R(f) and S(f) is finite, then it is equal to the other. This conjecture plays an important role in the theory of twisted conjugacy classes and has very important consequences in Dynamics, while its proof needs rather sophisticated results from Functional and Non-commutative Harmonic Analysis. We begin a discussion of the general case (which needs another definition of the dual object). It will be the subject of a forthcoming paper. Some applications and examples are presented.

Noncommutative Riesz theorem and weak Burnside type theorem on twisted conjugacy

The present paper consists of two parts. In the first part, we prove a noncommutative analogue of the Riesz(-Markov-Kakutani) theorem on representation of functionals on an algebra of continuous functions by regular measures on the underlying space. In the second part, using this result, we prove a weak version of Burnside type theorem for twisted conjugacy for arbitrary discrete groups.

Twisted Burnside theorem for type II_1 groups: an example

The purpose of the present paper is to discuss the following conjecture of Fel'shtyn and Hill, which is a generalization of the classical Burnside theorem: Let G be a countable discrete group, f its automorphism, R(f) the number of f-conjugacy classes (Reidemeister number), S(f):=# Fix (f^) the number of f-invariant equivalence classes of irreducible unitary representations. If one of R(f) and S(f) is finite, then it is equal to the other. This conjecture plays a very important role in the theory of twisted conjugacy classes having a long history and has very serious consequences in Dynamics, while its proof needs rather fine results from Functional and Non-commutative Harmonic Analysis. It was proved for finitely generated groups of type I in a previous paper. In the present paper this conjecture is disproved for non-type I groups. More precisely, an example of a group and its automorphism is constructed such that the number of fixed irreducible representations is greater than the Reidemeister number. But the number of fixed finite-dimensional representations (i.e. the number of invariant finite-dimensional characters) in this example coincides with the Reidemeister number.
