Combinatorial encoding of Bernoulli schemes and the asymptotic behavior of Young tableaux

We consider two examples of a fully decodable combinatorial encoding of Bernoulli schemes: the encoding via Weyl simplices and the much more complicated encoding via the RSK (Robinson--Schensted--Knuth) correspondence. In the first case, the decodability is a quite simple fact, while in the second case, this is a nontrivial result obtained by D.~Romik and P.~Śniady and based on the papers~ \cite{KV}, \cite{VK}, and others. We comment on the proofs from the viewpoint of the theory of measurable partitions; another proof, using representation theory and generalized Schur--Weyl duality, will be presented elsewhere. We also study a new dynamics of Bernoulli variables on $P$-tableaux and find the limit 3D-shape of these tableaux.

Laplace operators on the cone of Radon measures

We consider the infinite-dimensional Lie group $\mathfrak G$ which is the semidirect product of the group of compactly supported diffeomorphisms of a Riemannian manifold $X$ and the commutative multiplicative group of functions on $X$. The group $\mathfrak G$ naturally acts on the space $\mathbb M(X)$ of Radon measures on $X$. We would like to define a Laplace operator associated with a natural representation of $\mathfrak G$ in $L^2(\mathbb M(X),μ)$. Here $μ$ is assumed to be the law of a measure-valued Lévy process. A unitary representation of the group cannot be determined, since the measure $μ$ is not quasi-invariant with respect to the action of the group $\mathfrak G$. Consequently, operators of a representation of the Lie algebra and its universal enveloping algebra (in particular, a Laplace operator) are not defined. Nevertheless, we determine the Laplace operator by using a special property of the action of the group $\mathfrak G$ (a partial quasi-invariance). We further prove the essential self-adjointness of the Laplace operator. Finally, we explicitly construct a diffusion process on $\mathbb M(X)$ whose generator is the Laplace operator.

Standardness as an invariant formulation of independence

The notion of a homogeneous standard filtration of $σ$-algebras was introduced by the author in 1970. The main theorem asserted that a homogeneous filtration is standard, i.e., generated by a sequence of independent random variables, if and only if the standardness criterion is satisfied. In this paper we give detailed definitions and characterizations of Markov standard filtrations. The notion of standardness is essential for applications of probabilistic, combinatorial, and algebraic nature. At the end of the paper we present new notions of {\it shadow metric-measure space} related to nonstandard filtrations.

On a relation between the basic representation of the affine Lie algebra $\widehat\sl$ and a Schur--Weyl representation of the infinite symmetric group

We prove that there is a natural grading-preserving isomorphism of $\sl$-modules between the basic module of the affine Lie algebra $\widehat\sl$ (with the homogeneous grading) and a Schur--Weyl module of the infinite symmetric group $\sinf$ with a grading defined through the combinatorial notion of the major index of a Young tableau, and study the properties of this isomorphism. The results reveal new and deep interrelations between the representation theory of $\widehat\sl$ and the Virasoro algebra on the one hand, and the representation theory of $\sinf$ and the related combinatorics on the other hand.

The problem of describing central measures on path space of graded graphs

We suggest a new method of describing invariant measures on Markov compacta and path spaces of graphs, and thus of describing characters of some groups and traces of AF-algebras. The method relies on properties of filtrations associated with the graph and, in particular, on the notion of a standard filtration. The main tool is the so-called internal metric that we introduce on simplices of measures; it is an iterated Kantorovich metric, and the key result is that the relative compactness in this metric guarantees a constructive enumeration of the ergodic invariant measures. Applications include a number of classical theorems on invariant measures

Finite traces and representations of the group of infinite matrices over a finite field

The article is devoted to the representation theory of locally compact infinite-dimensional group $\mathbb{GLB}$ of almost upper-triangular infinite matrices over the finite field with $q$ elements. This group was defined by S.K., A.V., and Andrei Zelevinsky in 1982 as an adequate $n=\infty$ analogue of general linear groups $\mathbb{GL}(n,q)$. It serves as an alternative to $\mathbb{GL}(\infty,q)$, whose representation theory is poor. Our most important results are the description of semi-finite unipotent traces (characters) of the group $\mathbb{ GLB}$ via certain probability measures on the Borel subgroup $\mathbb{B}$ and the construction of the corresponding von Neumann factor representations of type $II_\infty$. As a main tool we use the subalgebra $\mathcal A(\mathbb{ GLB})$ of smooth functions in the group algebra $L_1(\mathbb{GLB})$. This subalgebra is an inductive limit of the finite--dimensional group algebras ${\mathbb C}(\mathbb{GL}(n,q))$ under parabolic embeddings. As in other examples of the asymptotic representation theory we discover remarkable properties of the infinite case which does not take place for finite groups, like multiplicativity of indecomposable characters or connections to probabilistic concepts. The infinite dimensional Iwahori-Hecke algebra $\mathcal H_q(\infty)$ plays a special role in our considerations and allows to understand the deep analogy of the developed theory with the representation theory of infinite symmetric group $S(\infty)$ which had been intensively studied in numerous previous papers.

Intrinsic metric on graded graphs, standardness, and invariant measures

We define a general notion of a smooth invariant (central) ergodic measure on the space of paths of an $N$-graded graph (Bratteli diagram). It is based on the notion of standardness of the tail filtration in the space of paths, and the smoothness criterion uses the so-called intrinsic metric which can be canonically defined on the set of vertices of these graphs. In many cases known to the author, like the Pascal graph, the Young graph, the space of configurations, all ergodic central measures are smooth (in this case, we say that the graph is smooth). But even in these cases, the intrinsic metric is far from being obvious and does not coincide with the "natural" metric. We apply and generalize the theory of filtrations developed by the author during the last forty years to the case of tail filtrations and, in particular, introduce the notion of a standard filtration as a generalization to the case of semi-homogeneous filtrations of the notion of a standard homogeneous (dyadic) filtration in the sense of that theory. The crucial role is played by the new notion of \textbf{intrinsic semi-metric on the set of vertices of a graph} and the notion of regular paths, which allows us to refine the ergodic method for the case of smooth measures. In future, we will apply this new approach to the theory of invariant measures in combinatorics, ergodic theory, and the theory of C$^*$-algebras.

Smooth and non-smooth $AF$-algebras and problem on invariant measures

We separate the $AF$-algebras (correspondingly action of the countable groups on Cantor sets) onto two classes ---- "completely smooth" for which the set of all indecomposable traces (correspondingly list of all invariant ergodic measures) has nice parametrization, and the second class --- "completely non-smooth" for which the set of all traces (correspondingly set of all invariant measures) is Poulsen simplex and therefore there is no suitable parametrization of indecomposable traces, (ergodic measures) e.g.Choquet boundary. Important example of the first type of $AF$-algebra is group algebra of infinite symmetric group, and of the second type --- group algebra of some locally finite solvable group. The questions of recognition of those cases are closely related to the orbit theory of dynamical systems and theory of filtrations of sigma-fields in measure spaces and Borel spaces.

Virtual continuity of the measurable functions of several variables, and Sobolev embedding theorems

Classical Luzin's theorem states that the measurable function of one variable is "almost" continuous. This is not so anymore for functions of several variables. The search of right analogue of the Luzin theorem leads to a notion of virtually continuous functions of several variables. This probably new notion appears implicitly in the statements like embeddings theorems and traces theorems for Sobolev spaces. In fact, it reveals their nature as theorems about virtual continuity. This notion is especially useful for the study and classification of measurable functions, aswell as in some questions on dynamical systems, polymorphisms and bistochastic measures. In this work we recall necessary definitions and properties of admissible metrics, define virtual continuity, describe some of applications. Detailed analysis is to be presented in another paper.

C*-algebras associated with endomorphisms and polymorphisms of compact abelian groups

A surjective endomorphism or, more generally, a polymorphism in the sense of \cite{SV}, of a compact abelian group $H$ induces a transformation of $L^2(H)$. We study the C*-algebra generated by this operator together with the algebra of continuous functions $C(H)$ which acts as multiplication operators on $L^2(H)$. Under a natural condition on the endo- or polymorphism, this algebra is simple and can be described by generators and relations. In the case of an endomorphism it is always purely infinite, while for a polymorphism in the class we consider, it is either purely infinite or has a unique trace. We prove a formula allowing to determine the $K$-theory of these algebras and use it to compute the $K$-groups in a number of interesting examples.

Description of the Characters and Factor Representations of Infinite Symmetric Inverse Semigroup

We give a complete list of indecomposable characters of the infinite symmetric semigroup. In comparison with the analogous list for the infinite symmetric group, one should introduce only one new parameter, which has a clear combinatorial meaning. The paper relies on the representation theory of the finite symmetric semigroups and the representation theory of the infinite symmetric group.

Totally nonfree actions and infinite symmetric group

We consider the totally nonfree (TNF) action of a groups and the corresponding adjoint invariant (AD) measures on the lattices of the subgroups of the given group. The main result is the description of all adjoint-invariant and TNF-measures on the lattice of subgroups of the infinite symmetric group $S_{\Bbb N}$. The problem is closely related to the theory of characters and factor representations of groups.

Orbit theory, locally finite permutations and morse arithmetic

The goal of this paper is to analyze two measure preserving transformation of combinatorial and number-theoretical origin from the point of view of ergodic orbit theory. We study the Morse transformation (in its adic realization in the group $\textbf{Z}_2$ of integer dyadic numbers, as described by the author [{\sl J. Sov. Math.} {\textbf{28}}, 667-674 (1985); {\sl St. Petersburg Math. J.} {\textbf{6}} (1995), no. 3, 529-540]) and prove that it has the same orbit partition as the dyadic odometer. Then we give a precise description of time substitution of the odometer, which produces the Morse transformation. It is convenient to describe this time substitution in the form of random re-orderings of the group $\mathbb Z$, or in terms of random infinite permutations of the group $\mathbb Z$. We introduce the notion of {\it locally finite permutations (LFP) or locally finite bijection (LFB), and uniformly locally finite time substitution (ULFTS)} for the group $\mathbb Z$ (and for all amenable groups). Two automorphisms which have the same orbit partitions are called {\it allied} if the time substitution of one to another is ULFTS. Our main result is that the Morse transformation and the odometer are allied. The theory of random infinite permutations on the group $\mathbb Z$ (and on more general groups) is as strong as the ergodic theory of actions of the group. The main task in this area is the investigation of infinite permutations, and measures on the space of infinite permutations, as well as the study of linear orderings on $\mathbb Z$. The class of locally finite permutations is a useful class for such an analysis.

Some numerical and algorithmical probelms in the asymptotic representation theory

The article presents the results of experiments in computation of statistical values related to Young diagrams, including the estimates on maximum and average (by Plancherel distribution) dimension of irreducible representation of symmetric group $S_n$. The computed limit shapes of two-dimensional and three-dimensional diagrams distributed by Richardson statistics are presented as well.

Twisted Burnside theorem for type II_1 groups: an example

The purpose of the present paper is to discuss the following conjecture of Fel'shtyn and Hill, which is a generalization of the classical Burnside theorem: Let G be a countable discrete group, f its automorphism, R(f) the number of f-conjugacy classes (Reidemeister number), S(f):=# Fix (f^) the number of f-invariant equivalence classes of irreducible unitary representations. If one of R(f) and S(f) is finite, then it is equal to the other. This conjecture plays a very important role in the theory of twisted conjugacy classes having a long history and has very serious consequences in Dynamics, while its proof needs rather fine results from Functional and Non-commutative Harmonic Analysis. It was proved for finitely generated groups of type I in a previous paper. In the present paper this conjecture is disproved for non-type I groups. More precisely, an example of a group and its automorphism is constructed such that the number of fixed irreducible representations is greater than the Reidemeister number. But the number of fixed finite-dimensional representations (i.e. the number of invariant finite-dimensional characters) in this example coincides with the Reidemeister number.

Fock factorizations, and decompositions of the $L^2$ spaces over general Levy processes

We explicitly construct and study an isometry between the spaces of square integrable functionals of an arbitrary Levy process and a vector-valued Gaussian white noise. In particular, we obtain explicit formulas for this isometry at the level of multiplicative functionals and at the level of orthogonal decompositions, as well as find its kernel. We consider in detail the central special case: the isometry between the $L^2$ spaces over a Poisson process and the corresponding white noise. The key role in our considerations is played by the notion of measure and Hilbert factorizations and related notions of multiplicative and additive functionals and logarithm. The obtained results allow us to introduce a canonical Fock structure (an analogue of the Wiener--Ito decomposition) in the $L^2$ space over an arbitrary Levy process. An application to the representation theory of current groups is considered. An example of a non-Fock factorization is given.
