On the inverse semigroup of bimodules over a C*-algebra

It was noticed recently that, given a metric space $(X,d_X)$, the equivalence classes of metrics on the disjoint union of the two copies of $X$ coinciding with $d_X$ on each copy form an inverse semigroup $M(X)$ with respect to concatenation of metrics. Now put this inverse semigroup construction in a more general context, namely, we define, for a C*-algebra $A$, an inverse semigroup $S(A)$ of Hilbert C*-$A$-$A$-bimodules. When $A$ is the uniform Roe algebra $C^*_u(X)$ of a metric space $X$, we construct a map $M(X)\to S(C^*_u(X))$ and show that this map is injective, but not surjective in general. This allows to define an analog of the inverse semigroup $M(X)$ that does not depend on the choice of a metric on $X$ within its coarse equivalence class.

Metrics on doubles as an inverse semigroup

For a metric space $X$ we study metrics on the two copies of $X$. We define composition of such metrics and show that the equivalence classes of metrics are a semigroup $M(X)$ Our main result is that $M(X)$ is an inverse semigroup, therefore, one can define the $C^*$-algebra of this inverse semigroup. We characterize the metrics that are idempotents, find a minimal projection in $M(X)$ and give examples of metric spaces, for which the semigroup $M(X)$ is commutative. We show that if the Gromov-Hausdorff distance between two metric spaces, $X$ and $Y$, is finite then $M(X)$ and $M(Y)$ are isomorphic. We also describe the class of metrics determined by subsets of $X$ in terms of the closures of the subsets in the Higson corona of $X$.

Metrics on doubles as an inverse semigroup II

We have shown recently that, given a metric space $X$, the coarse equivalence classes of metrics on the two copies of $X$ form an inverse semigroup $M(X)$. Here we give several descriptions of the set $E(M(X))$ of idempotents of this inverse semigroup and its Stone dual space $\widehat X$. We also construct $σ$-additive measures on $\widehat X$ from finitely additive probability measures on $X$ that vanish on bounded subsets.

Balanced pairs of operators and their relative index

We show that the K_1 group of a C*-algebra $A$ can be defined as homotopy classes of pairs, called balanced, of not necessarily unitary matrices over $A$ that have equal defects from being unitary. We also consider pairs of order zero pseudodifferential operators, not necessarily elliptic, with symbols being a balanced pair. A relative index is defined for such pairs of operators and it equals the topological index of the pair of their symbols.

Extensions of Hilbert C*-modules: classification in simple cases

Theory of extensions of Hilbert C*-modules was developed by D. Bakic and B. Guljas. An easy observation shows that in the case, when the underlying C*-algebra extension is commutative and the Hilbert C*-modules are projective of finite type, the algebraic properties of the corresponding Busby invariant allow to identify extensions with isometric maps of the corresponding vector bundles. When the Hilbert C*-modules are free of rank one, we evaluate the set of extensions in topological terms.

On C*-algebras related to constrained representations of a free group

We consider representations of the free group $F_2$ on two generators such that the norm of the sum of the generators and their inverses is bounded by $μ\in[0,4]$. These $μ$-constrained representations determine a C*-algebra $A_μ$ for each $μ\in[0,4]$. We prove that these C*-algebras form a continuous bundle of C*-algebras over $[0,4]$ and calculate their K-groups.

Shape theory and extensions of C*-algebras

Let $A$, $A'$ be separable $C^*$-algebras, $B$ a stable $σ$-unital $C^*$-algebra. Our main result is the construction of the pairing $[[A',A]]\times\operatorname{Ext}^{-1/2}(A,B)\to\operatorname{Ext}^{-1/2}(A',B)$, where $[[A',A]]$ denotes the set of homotopy classes of asymptotic homomorphisms from $A'$ to $A$ and $\operatorname{Ext}^{-1/2}(A,B)$ is the group of semi-invertible extensions of $A$ by $B$. Assume that all extensions of $A$ by $B$ are semi-invertible. Then this pairing allows us to give a condition on $A'$ that provides semi-invertibility of all extensions of $A'$ by $B$. This holds, in particular, if $A$ and $A'$ are shape equivalent. A similar condition implies that if $\operatorname{Ext}^{-1/2}$ coincides with $E$-theory (via the Connes-Higson map) for $A$ then the same holds for $A'$.
