Symplectic geometry of projective structures on surfaces with boundary

For oriented surfaces $Σ$ with boundary, we consider the infinite-dimensional deformation space of projective structures on $Σ$ with nondegenerate boundary, up to isotopies fixing the boundary. We show that this space carries a natural symplectic structure, and is a Hamiltonian space for the symplectic groupoid integrating the Adler-Gelfand-Dikii-space of the boundary.

On the coadjoint Virasoro action

The set of coadjoint orbits of the Virasoro algebra at level 1 is in bijection with the set of conjugacy classes in a certain open subset $\widetilde{\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{R})_+$ of the universal cover of ${\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$. We strengthen this bijection to a Morita equivalence of quasi-symplectic groupoids, integrating the Poisson structure on $\mathfrak{vir}^*_\mathsf{1}(S^1)$ and the Cartan-Dirac structure on $\widetilde{\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{R})_+$, respectively.

Deformation spaces and normal forms around transversals

Given a manifold M with a submanifold N, the deformation space D(M,N) is a manifold with a submersion to R whose zero fiber is the normal bundle, and all other fibers are equal to M. This article uses deformation spaces to study the local behavior of various geometric structures associated with singular foliations, with N a submanifold transverse to the foliation. New examples include L_\infty-algebroids, Courant algebroids, and Lie bialgebroids. In each case, we obtain a normal form theorem around N, in terms of a model structure over the normal bundle.

Convexity for twisted conjugation

Let $G$ be a compact, simply connected Lie group. If $\mathcal{C}_1,\mathcal{C}_2$ are two $G$-conjugacy classes, then the set of elements in $G$ that can be written as products $g=g_1g_2$ of elements $g_i\in \mathcal{C}_i$ is invariant under conjugation, and its image under the quotient map $G\to G/\operatorname{Ad}(G)$ is a convex polytope inside the Weyl alcove. In this note, we will prove an analogous statement for twisted conjugations relative to group automorphisms. The result will be obtained as a special case of a convexity theorem for group-valued moment maps which are equivariant with respect to the twisted conjugation action.

Splitting theorems for Poisson and related structures

According to the Weinstein splitting theorem, any Poisson manifold is locally, near any given point, a product of a symplectic manifold with another Poisson manifold whose Poisson structure vanishes at the point. Similar splitting results are known e.g. for Lie algebroids, Dirac structures and generalized complex structures. In this paper, we develop a novel approach towards these results that leads to various generalizations, including their equivariant versions as well as their formulations in new contexts.

Dirac actions and Lu's Lie algebroid

Poisson actions of Poisson Lie groups have an interesting and rich geometric structure. We will generalize some of this structure to Dirac actions of Dirac Lie groups. Among other things, we extend a result of Jiang-Hua-Lu, which states that the cotangent Lie algebroid and the action algebroid for a Poisson action form a matched pair. We also give a full classification of Dirac actions for which the base manifold is a homogeneous space $H/K$, obtaining a generalization of Drinfeld's classification for the Poisson Lie group case.

On the Van Est homomorphism for Lie groupoids

The Van Est homomorphism for a Lie groupoid $G \rightrightarrows M$, as introduced by Weinstein-Xu, is a cochain map from the complex $C^\infty(BG)$ of groupoid cochains to the Chevalley-Eilenberg complex $C(A)$ of the Lie algebroid $A$ of $G$. It was generalized by Weinstein, Mehta, and Abad-Crainic to a morphism from the Bott-Shulman-Stasheff complex $Ω(BG)$ to a (suitably defined) Weil algebra $W(A)$. In this paper, we will give an approach to the Van Est map in terms of the Perturbation Lemma of homological algebra. This approach is used to establish the basic properties of the Van Est map. In particular, we show that on the normalized subcomplex, the Van Est map restricts to an algebra morphism.

Courant algebroids and Poisson Geometry

Given a manifold M with an action of a quadratic Lie algebra d, such that all stabilizer algebras are co-isotropic in d, we show that the product M\times d becomes a Courant algebroid over M. If the bilinear form on d is split, the choice of transverse Lagrangian subspaces g_1, g_2 of d defines a bivector field on M, which is Poisson if (d,g_1,g_2) is a Manin triple. In this way, we recover the Poisson structures of Lu-Yakimov, and in particular the Evens-Lu Poisson structures on the variety of Lagrangian Grassmannians and on the de Concini-Procesi compactifications. Various Poisson maps between such examples are interpreted in terms of the behaviour of Lagrangian splittings under Courant morphisms.

Tilings defined by affine Weyl groups

Let W be a Weyl group, presented as a crystallographic reflection group on a Euclidean vector space V, and C an open Weyl chamber. In a recent paper, Waldspurger proved that the images (id-w)(C), for Weyl group elements w, are all disjoint, and their union is the closed cone spanned by the positive roots. We show that similarly, if A is the Weyl alcove, the images (id-w)(A), for affine Weyl group elements w, are all disjoint, and their union is V.

Pure Spinors on Lie groups

For any manifold M, the direct sum TM \oplus T*M carries a natural inner product given by the pairing of vectors and covectors. Differential forms on M may be viewed as spinors for the corresponding Clifford bundle, and in particular there is a notion of \emph{pure spinor}. In this paper, we study pure spinors and Dirac structures in the case when M=G is a Lie group with a bi-invariant pseudo-Riemannian metric, e.g. G semi-simple. The applications of our theory include the construction of distinguished volume forms on conjugacy classes in G, and a new approach to the theory of quasi-Hamiltonian G-spaces.

Linearization of Poisson actions and singular values of matrix products

We prove that the linearization functor from the category of Hamiltonian K-actions with group-valued moment maps in the sense of Lu, to the category of ordinary Hamiltonian K-actions, preserves products up to symplectic isomorphism. As an application, we give a new proof of the Thompson conjecture on singular values of matrix products and extend this result to the case of real matrices. We give a formula for the Liouville volume of these spaces and obtain from it a hyperbolic version of the Duflo isomorphism.

Non-abelian convexity by symplectic cuts

In this paper we extend the results of Kirwan et alii on convexity properties of the moment map for Hamiltonian group actions, and on the connectedness of the fibers of the moment map, to the case of non-compact orbifolds. Our motivation is twofold. First, the category of orbifolds is important in symplectic geometry because, generically, the symplectic quotient of a symplectic manifold is an orbifold. Second, our proof is conceptually very simple since it reduces the non-abelian case to the abelian case.
