DetIE: Multilingual Open Information Extraction Inspired by Object Detection

State of the art neural methods for open information extraction (OpenIE) usually extract triplets (or tuples) iteratively in an autoregressive or predicate-based manner in order not to produce duplicates. In this work, we propose a different approach to the problem that can be equally or more successful. Namely, we present a novel single-pass method for OpenIE inspired by object detection algorithms from computer vision. We use an order-agnostic loss based on bipartite matching that forces unique predictions and a Transformer-based encoder-only architecture for sequence labeling. The proposed approach is faster and shows superior or similar performance in comparison with state of the art models on standard benchmarks in terms of both quality metrics and inference time. Our model sets the new state of the art performance of 67.7% F1 on CaRB evaluated as OIE2016 while being 3.35x faster at inference than previous state of the art. We also evaluate the multilingual version of our model in the zero-shot setting for two languages and introduce a strategy for generating synthetic multilingual data to fine-tune the model for each specific language. In this setting, we show performance improvement 15% on multilingual Re-OIE2016, reaching 75% F1 for both Portuguese and Spanish languages. Code and models are available at https://github.com/sberbank-ai/DetIE.

On the coadjoint Virasoro action

The set of coadjoint orbits of the Virasoro algebra at level 1 is in bijection with the set of conjugacy classes in a certain open subset $\widetilde{\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{R})_+$ of the universal cover of ${\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$. We strengthen this bijection to a Morita equivalence of quasi-symplectic groupoids, integrating the Poisson structure on $\mathfrak{vir}^*_\mathsf{1}(S^1)$ and the Cartan-Dirac structure on $\widetilde{\rm SL}(2,\mathbb{R})_+$, respectively.

Action-angle coordinates on coadjoint orbits and multiplicity free spaces from partial tropicalization

Coadjoint orbits and multiplicity free spaces of compact Lie groups are important examples of symplectic manifolds with Hamiltonian groups actions. Constructing action-angle variables on these spaces is a challenging task. A fundamental result in the field is the Guillemin-Sternberg construction of Gelfand-Zeitlin integrable systems for the groups $K=U(n), SO(n)$. Extending these results to groups of other types is one of the goals of this paper. Partial tropicalizations are Poisson spaces with constant Poisson bracket built using techniques of Poisson-Lie theory and the geometric crystals of Berenstein-Kazhdan. They provide a bridge between dual spaces of Lie algebras ${\rm Lie}(K)^*$ with linear Poisson brackets and polyhedral cones which parametrize the canonical bases of irreducible modules of $G=K^\mathbb{C}$. We generalize the construction of partial tropicalizations to allow for arbitrary cluster charts, and apply it to questions in symplectic geometry. For each regular coadjoint orbit of a compact group $K$, we construct an exhaustion by symplectic embeddings of toric domains. As a by product we arrive at a conjectured formula for Gromov width of regular coadjoint orbits. We prove similar results for multiplicity free $K$-spaces.

Improving unsupervised neural aspect extraction for online discussions using out-of-domain classification

Deep learning architectures based on self-attention have recently achieved and surpassed state of the art results in the task of unsupervised aspect extraction and topic modeling. While models such as neural attention-based aspect extraction (ABAE) have been successfully applied to user-generated texts, they are less coherent when applied to traditional data sources such as news articles and newsgroup documents. In this work, we introduce a simple approach based on sentence filtering in order to improve topical aspects learned from newsgroups-based content without modifying the basic mechanism of ABAE. We train a probabilistic classifier to distinguish between out-of-domain texts (outer dataset) and in-domain texts (target dataset). Then, during data preparation we filter out sentences that have a low probability of being in-domain and train the neural model on the remaining sentences. The positive effect of sentence filtering on topic coherence is demonstrated in comparison to aspect extraction models trained on unfiltered texts.

Provenance of classical Hamiltonian time crystals

Classical Hamiltonian systems with conserved charges and those with constraints often describe dynamics on a pre-symplectic manifold. Here we show that a pre-symplectic manifold is also the proper stage to describe autonomous energy conserving Hamiltonian time crystals. We explain how the occurrence of a time crystal relates to the wider concept of spontaneously broken symmetries; in the case of a time crystal, the symmetry breaking takes place in a dynamical context. We then analyze in detail two examples of time crystalline Hamiltonian dynamics. The first example is a piecewise linear closed string, with dynamics determined by a Lie-Poisson bracket and Hamiltonian that relates to membrane stability. We explain how the Lie-Poisson brackets descents to a time crystalline pre-symplectic bracket, and we show that the Hamiltonian dynamics supports two phases; in one phase we have a time crystal and in the other phase time crystals are absent. The second example is a discrete Hamiltonian variant of the Q-ball Lagrangian of time dependent non-topological solitons. We explain how a Q-ball becomes a time crystal, and we construct examples of time crystalline Q-balls.

Higher genus Kashiwara-Vergne problems and the Goldman-Turaev Lie bialgebra

We define a family ${\rm KV}^{(g,n)}$ of Kashiwara-Vergne problems associated with compact connected oriented 2-manifolds of genus $g$ with $n+1$ boundary components. The problem ${\rm KV}^{(0,3)}$ is the classical Kashiwara-Vergne problem from Lie theory. We show the existence of solutions of ${\rm KV}^{(g,n)}$ for arbitrary $g$ and $n$. The key point is the solution of ${\rm KV}^{(1,1)}$ based on the results by B. Enriquez on elliptic associators. Our construction is motivated by applications to the formality problem for the Goldman-Turaev Lie bialgebra $\mathfrak{g}^{(g, n+1)}$. In more detail, we show that every solution of ${\rm KV}^{(g,n)}$ induces a Lie bialgebra isomorphism between $\mathfrak{g}^{(g, n+1)}$ and its associated graded ${\rm gr} \, \mathfrak{g}^{(g, n+1)}$. For $g=0$, a similar result was obtained by G. Massuyeau using the Kontsevich integral. This paper is a summary of our results. Details and proofs will appear elsewhere.

Divergence and q-divergence in depth 2

The Kashiwara-Vergne Lie algebra $\mathfrak{krv}$ encodes symmetries of the Kashiwara-Vergne problem on the properties of the Campbell-Hausdorff series. It is conjectures that $\mathfrak{krv} \cong \mathbb{K}t \oplus \mathfrak{grt}_1$, where $t$ is a generator of degree 1 and $\mathfrak{grt}_1$ is the Grothendieck-Teichmüller Lie algebra. In the paper, we prove this conjecture in depth 2. The main tools in the proof are the divergence cocycle and the representation theory of the dihedral group $D_{12}$. Our calculation is similar to the calculation by Zagier of the graded dimensions of the double shuffle Lie algebra in depth 2. In analogy to the divergence cocycle, we define the super-divergence and $q$-divergence cocycles (here $q^l=1$) on Lie subalgebras of $\mathfrak{grt}_1$ which consist of elements with weight divisible by $l$. We show that in depth $2$ these cocycles have no kernel. This result is in sharp contrast with the fact that the divergence cocycle vanishes on $[\mathfrak{grt}_1, \mathfrak{grt}_1]$.

Inequalities from Poisson brackets

We introduce the notion of tropicalization for Poisson structures on $\mathbb{R}^n$ with coefficients in Laurent polynomials. To such a Poisson structure we associate a polyhedral cone and a constant Poisson bracket on this cone. There is a version of this formalism applicable to $\mathbb{C}^n$ viewed as a real Poisson manifold. In this case, the tropicalization gives rise to a completely integrable system with action variables taking values in a polyhedral cone and angle variables spanning a torus. As an example, we consider the canonical Poisson bracket on the dual Poisson-Lie group $G^*$ for $G=U(n)$ in the cluster coordinates of Fomin-Zelevinsky defined by a certain choice of solid minors. We prove that the corresponding integrable system is isomorphic to the Gelfand-Zeitlin completely integrable system of Guillemin-Sternberg and Flaschka-Ratiu.

Wilson surface observables from equivariant cohomology

Wilson lines in gauge theories admit several path integral descriptions. The first one (due to Alekseev-Faddeev-Shatashvili) uses path integrals over coadjoint orbits. The second one (due to Diakonov-Petrov) replaces a 1-dimensional path integral with a 2-dimensional topological $σ$-model. We show that this $σ$-model is defined by the equivariant extension of the Kirillov symplectic form on the coadjoint orbit. This allows to define the corresponding observable on arbitrary 2-dimensional surfaces, including closed surfaces. We give a new path integral presentation of Wilson lines in terms of Poisson $σ$-models, and we test this presentation in the framework of the 2-dimensional Yang-Mills theory. On a closed surface, our Wilson surface observable turns out to be nontrivial for $G$ non-simply connected (and trivial for $G$ simply connected), in particular we study in detail the cases $G=U(1)$ and $G=SO(3)$.

Logarithms and deformation quantization

We prove the statement/conjecture of M. Kontsevich on the existence of the logarithmic formality morphism. This question was open since 1999, and the main obstacle was the presence of $dr/r$ type singularities near the boundary $r=0$ in the integrals over compactified configuration spaces. The novelty of our approach is the use of local torus actions on configuration spaces of points in the upper half-plane. It gives rise to a version of Stokes' formula for differential forms with singularities at the boundary which implies the formality property. We also show that the logarithmic formality morphism admits a globalization from $\mathbb{R}^d$ to an arbitrary smooth manifold.

Chern-Simons Theory with Wilson Lines and Boundary in the BV-BFV Formalism

We consider the Chern-Simons theory with Wilson lines in 3D and in 1D in the BV-BFV formalism of Cattaneo-Mnev-Reshetikhin. In particular, we allow for Wilson lines to end on the boundary of the space-time manifold. In the toy model of 1D Chern-Simons theory, the quantized BFV boundary action coincides with the Kostant cubic Dirac operator which plays an important role in representation theory. In the case of 3D Chern-Simons theory, the boundary action turns out to be the odd (degree 1) version of the BF model with source terms for the B field at the points where the Wilson lines meet the boundary. The boundary space of states arising as the cohomology of the quantized BFV action coincides with the space of conformal blocks of the corresponding WZW model.

The Horn problem and planar networks

The problem of determining the set of possible eigenvalues of 3 Hermitian matrices that sum up to zero is known as the Horn problem. The answer is a polyhedral cone, which, following Knutson and Tao, can be described as the projection of a simpler cone in the space of triangular tableaux (or hives) to the boundary nodes of the tableau. In this paper, we introduce a combinatorial problem defined in terms of certain weighted planar graphs giving rise to exactly the same polyhedral cone. In our framework, the values at the inner nodes of the triangular tableaux receive a natural interpretation. Other problems of linear algebra fit into the same scheme, among them the Gelfand--Zeitlin problem. Our approach is motivated by the works of Fomin and Zelevinsky on total positivity and by the ideas of tropicalization.

Equivariant cohomology and current algebras

Let M be a manifold and g a Lie algebra acting on M. Differential forms Omega(M) carry a natural action of Lie derivatives L(x) and contractions I(x) of fundamental vector fields for x \in g. Contractions (anti-) commute with each other, [I(x), I(y)]=0. Together with the de Rham differential, they satisfy the Cartan's magic formula [d, I(x)]=L(x). In this paper, we define a differential graded Lie algebra Dg, where instead of commuting with each other, contractions form a free Lie superalgebra. It turns out that central extensions of Dg are classified (under certain assumptions) by invariant homogeneous polynomials p on g. This construction gives a natural framework for the theory of twisted equivariant cohomology and a new interpretation of Mickelsson-Faddeev-Shatashvili cocycles of higher dimensional current algebras. As a topological application, we consider principal G-bundles (with G a Lie group integrating g), and for every homogeneous polynomial p on g we define a lifting problem with the only obstruction the corresponding Chern-Weil class cw(p).

On SLE martingales in boundary WZW models

We consider the boundary WZW model on a half-plane with a cut growing according to the Schramm-Loewner stochastic evolution and the boundary fields inserted at the tip of the cut and at infinity. We study necessary and sufficient conditions for boundary correlation functions to be SLE martingales. Necessary conditions come from the requirement for the boundary field at the tip of the cut to have a depth two null vector. Sufficient conditions are established using Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov equations for boundary correlators. Combining these two approaches, we show that in the case of G=SU(2) the boundary correlator is an SLE martingale if and only if the boundary field carries spin 1/2. In the case of G=SU(n) and k=1, there are several situations when boundary one-point correlators are SLE(kappa)-martingales. If the boundary field is labelled by the defining n-dimensional representation of SU(n), we obtain kappa=2. For n even, by choosing the boundary field labelled by the (unique) self-adjoint fundamental representation, we get kappa=8/(n+2). We also study the situation when the distance between the two boundary fields is finite, and we show that in this case the SLE(kappa) evolution is replaced by SLE(kappa, rho) with rho=kappa-6.

On the Kostant conjecture for Clifford algebra

Let g be a complex simple Lie algebra, and h be a Cartan subalgebra. In the end of 1990s, B. Kostant defined two filtrations on h, one using the Clifford algebras and the odd analogue of the Harish-Chandra projection $hc: Cl(g) \to Cl(h)$, and the other one using the canonical isomorphism $\check{h} = h^*$ (here $\check{h}$ is the Cartan subalgebra in the simple Lie algebra corresponding to the dual root system) and the adjoint action of the principal sl2-triple. Kostant conjectured that the two filtrations coincide. The two filtrations arise in very different contexts, and comparing them proved to be a difficult task. Y. Bazlov settled the conjecture for g of type A using explicit expressions for primitive invariants in the exterior algebra of g. Up to now this approach did not lead to a proof for all simple Lie algebras. Recently, A. Joseph proved that the second Kostant filtration coincides with the filtration on h induced by the generalized Harish-Chandra projection $(Ug \otimes g)^g \to Sh \otimes h$ and the evaluation at $ρ\in h^*$. In this note, we prove that Joseph's result is equivalent to the Kostant Conjecture. We also show that the standard Harish-Chandra projection $Ug \to Sh$ composed with evaluation at $ρ$ induces the same filtration on h.

On rational Drinfeld associators

We prove an estimate on denominators of rational Drinfeld associators. To obtain this result, we prove the corresponding estimate for the p-adic associators stable under the action of suitable elements of Gal(\bar{Q}/Q). As an application, we settle in the positive Duflo's question on the Kashiwara--Vergne factorizations of the Jacobson element J_p(x,y)=(x+y)^p-x^p-y^p in the free Lie algebra over a field of characteristic p. Another application is a new estimate on denominators of the Kontsevich knot invariant.

Quantum gauge fields and flat connections in 2-dimensional BF theory

The 2-dimensional BF theory is both a gauge theory and a topological Poisson $σ$-model corresponding to a linear Poisson bracket. In \cite{To1}, Torossian discovered a connection which governs correlation functions of the BF theory with sources for the $B$-field. This connection is flat, and it is a close relative of the KZ connection in the WZW model. In this paper, we show that flatness of the Torossian connection follows from (properly regularized) quantum equations of motion of the BF theory.

Pure Spinors on Lie groups

For any manifold M, the direct sum TM \oplus T*M carries a natural inner product given by the pairing of vectors and covectors. Differential forms on M may be viewed as spinors for the corresponding Clifford bundle, and in particular there is a notion of \emph{pure spinor}. In this paper, we study pure spinors and Dirac structures in the case when M=G is a Lie group with a bi-invariant pseudo-Riemannian metric, e.g. G semi-simple. The applications of our theory include the construction of distinguished volume forms on conjugacy classes in G, and a new approach to the theory of quasi-Hamiltonian G-spaces.

Quantization of symplectic dynamical r-matrices and the quantum composition formula

In this paper we quantize symplectic dynamical r-matrices over a possibly nonabelian base. The proof is based on the fact that the existence of a star-product with a nice property (called strong invariance) is sufficient for the existence of a quantization. We also classify such quantizations and prove a quantum analogue of the classical composition formula for coboundary dynamical r-matrices.

Linearization of Poisson actions and singular values of matrix products

We prove that the linearization functor from the category of Hamiltonian K-actions with group-valued moment maps in the sense of Lu, to the category of ordinary Hamiltonian K-actions, preserves products up to symplectic isomorphism. As an application, we give a new proof of the Thompson conjecture on singular values of matrix products and extend this result to the case of real matrices. We give a formula for the Liouville volume of these spaces and obtain from it a hyperbolic version of the Duflo isomorphism.
