Generating Digital Twins with Multiple Sclerosis Using Probabilistic Neural Networks

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by a complex set of clinical assessments. We use an unsupervised machine learning model called a Conditional Restricted Boltzmann Machine (CRBM) to learn the relationships between covariates commonly used to characterize subjects and their disease progression in MS clinical trials. A CRBM is capable of generating digital twins, which are simulated subjects having the same baseline data as actual subjects. Digital twins allow for subject-level statistical analyses of disease progression. The CRBM is trained using data from 2395 subjects enrolled in the placebo arms of clinical trials across the three primary subtypes of MS. We discuss how CRBMs are trained and show that digital twins generated by the model are statistically indistinguishable from their actual subject counterparts along a number of measures.

Coherent Quantization using Coloured Surfaces

In this note, we revisit the quantization of Lie bialgebras described by the second author, placing it in the more general framework of the quantization of moduli spaces developed in our previous work. In particular, we show that embeddings of quilted surfaces (which are compatible with the choice of skeleton) induce morphisms between the corresponding quantized moduli spaces of flat connections. As an application, we describe quantizations of both the variety of Lagrangian subalgebras and the de-Cocini Procesi wonderful compactification, which are compatible with the action of the (quantized) Poisson Lie group.

Moduli spaces for quilted surfaces and Poisson structures

Let G be a Lie group endowed with a bi-invariant pseudo-Riemannian metric. Then the moduli space of flat connections on a principal G-bundle, P\to Σ, over a compact oriented surface, Σ, carries a Poisson structure. If we trivialize P over a finite number of points on the boundary of Σ, then the moduli space carries a quasi-Poisson structure instead. Our first result is to describe this quasi-Poisson structure in terms of an intersection form on the fundamental groupoid of the surface, generalizing results of Massuyeau and Turaev. Our second result is to extend this framework to quilted surfaces, i.e. surfaces where the structure group varies from region to region and a reduction (or relation) of structure occurs along the borders of the regions, extending results of the second author. We describe the Poisson structure on the moduli space for a quilted surface in terms of an operation on spin networks, i.e. graphs immersed in the surface which are endowed with some additional data on their edges and vertices. This extends the results of various authors.

The stack of higher internal categories and stacks of iterated spans

In this paper, we show that two constructions form stacks: Firstly, as one varies the $\infty$-topos, $\mathcal{X}$, Lurie's homotopy theory of higher categories internal to $\mathcal{X}$ varies in such a way as to form a stack over the $\infty$-category of all $\infty$-topoi. Secondly, we show that Haugseng's construction of the higher category of iterated spans in a given $\infty$-topos (equipped with local systems) can be used to define various stacks over that $\infty$-topos. As a prerequisite to these results, we discuss properties which limits of $\infty$-categories inherit from the $\infty$-categories comprising the diagram. For example, Riehl and Verity have shown that possessing (co)limits of a given shape is hereditary. Extending their result somewhat, we show that possessing Kan extensions of a given type is heriditary, and more generally that the adjointability of a functor is heriditary.

On Deformation Quantization of Poisson-Lie Groups and Moduli Spaces of Flat Connections

We give simple explicit formulas for deformation quantization of Poisson-Lie groups and of similar Poisson manifolds which can be represented as moduli spaces of flat connections on surfaces. The star products depend on a choice of Drinfeľd associator and are obtained by applying certain monoidal functors (fusion and reduction) to commutative algebras in Drinfeľd categories. From a geometric point of view this construction can be understood as a quantization of the quasi-Poisson structures on moduli spaces of flat connections.

On the Van Est homomorphism for Lie groupoids

The Van Est homomorphism for a Lie groupoid $G \rightrightarrows M$, as introduced by Weinstein-Xu, is a cochain map from the complex $C^\infty(BG)$ of groupoid cochains to the Chevalley-Eilenberg complex $C(A)$ of the Lie algebroid $A$ of $G$. It was generalized by Weinstein, Mehta, and Abad-Crainic to a morphism from the Bott-Shulman-Stasheff complex $Ω(BG)$ to a (suitably defined) Weil algebra $W(A)$. In this paper, we will give an approach to the Van Est map in terms of the Perturbation Lemma of homological algebra. This approach is used to establish the basic properties of the Van Est map. In particular, we show that on the normalized subcomplex, the Van Est map restricts to an algebra morphism.

Pseudo-Dirac Structures

A Dirac structure is a Lagrangian subbundle of a Courant algebroid, $L\subset\mathbb{E}$, which is involutive with respect to the Courant bracket. In particular, $L$ inherits the structure of a Lie algebroid. In this paper, we introduce the more general notion of a pseudo-Dirac structure: an arbitrary subbundle, $W\subset\mathbb{E}$, together with a pseudo-connection on its sections, satisfying a natural integrability condition. As a consequence of the definition, $W$ will be a Lie algebroid. Allowing non-isotropic subbundles of $\mathbb{E}$ incorporates non-skew tensors and connections into Dirac geometry. Novel examples of pseudo-Dirac structures arise in the context of quasi-Poisson geometry, Lie theory, generalized Kähler geometry, and Dirac Lie groups, among others. Despite their greater generality, we show that pseudo-Dirac structures share many of the key features of Dirac structures. In particular, they behave well under composition with Courant relations.

Selective Categories and Linear Canonical Relations

A construction of Wehrheim and Woodward circumvents the problem that compositions of smooth canonical relations are not always smooth, building a category suitable for functorial quantization. To apply their construction to more examples, we introduce a notion of highly selective category, in which only certain morphisms and certain pairs of these morphisms are "good". We then apply this notion to the category $\mathbf{SLREL}$ of linear canonical relations and the result ${\rm WW}(\mathbf{SLREL})$ of our version of the WW construction, identifying the morphisms in the latter with pairs $(L,k)$ consisting of a linear canonical relation and a nonnegative integer. We put a topology on this category of indexed linear canonical relations for which composition is continuous, unlike the composition in $\mathbf{SLREL}$ itself. Subsequent papers will consider this category from the viewpoint of derived geometry and will concern quantum counterparts.

Symplectic and Poisson geometry of the moduli spaces of flat connections over quilted surfaces

In this paper we study the symplectic and Poisson geometry of moduli spaces of flat connections over quilted surfaces. These are surfaces where the structure group varies from region to region in the surface, and where a reduction (or relation) of structure occurs along the boundaries of the regions. Our main theoretical tool is a new form moment-map reduction in the context of Dirac geometry. This reduction framework allows us to use very general relations of structure groups, and to investigate both the symplectic and Poisson geometry of the resulting moduli spaces from a unified perspective. The moduli spaces we construct in this way include a number of important examples, including Poisson Lie groups and their Homogeneous spaces, moduli spaces for meromorphic connections over Riemann surfaces (following the work of Philip Boalch), and various symplectic groupoids. Realizing these examples as moduli spaces for quilted surfaces provides new insights into their geometry.

Quasi-Hamiltonian groupoids and multiplicative Manin pairs

We reformulate notions from the theory of quasi-Poisson g-manifolds in terms of graded Poisson geometry and graded Poisson-Lie groups and prove that quasi-Poisson g-manifolds integrate to quasi-Hamiltonian g-groupoids. We then interpret this result within the theory of Dirac morphisms and multiplicative Manin pairs, to connect our work with more traditional approaches, and also to put it into a wider context suggesting possible generalizations.

LA-Courant algebroids and their applications

In this thesis we develop the notion of LA-Courant algebroids, the infinitesimal analogue of multiplicative Courant algebroids. Specific applications include the integration of q- Poisson (d, g)-structures, and the reduction of Courant algebroids. We also introduce the notion of pseudo-Dirac structures, (possibly non-Lagrangian) subbundles W \subseteq E of a Courant algebroid such that the Courant bracket endows W naturally with the structure of a Lie algebroid. Specific examples of pseudo-Dirac structures arise in the theory of q-Poisson (d, g)-structures.

Courant algebroids and Poisson Geometry

Given a manifold M with an action of a quadratic Lie algebra d, such that all stabilizer algebras are co-isotropic in d, we show that the product M\times d becomes a Courant algebroid over M. If the bilinear form on d is split, the choice of transverse Lagrangian subspaces g_1, g_2 of d defines a bivector field on M, which is Poisson if (d,g_1,g_2) is a Manin triple. In this way, we recover the Poisson structures of Lu-Yakimov, and in particular the Evens-Lu Poisson structures on the variety of Lagrangian Grassmannians and on the de Concini-Procesi compactifications. Various Poisson maps between such examples are interpreted in terms of the behaviour of Lagrangian splittings under Courant morphisms.
