Nodal solutions for Neumann systems with gradient dependence

We consider the following convective Neumann systems:\begin{equation*}\left(\mathrm{S}\right)\qquad\left\{\begin{array}{ll}-Δ_{p_1}u_1+\frac{|\nabla u_1|^{p_1}}{u_1+δ_1}=f_1(x,u_1,u_2,\nabla u_1,\nabla u_2) & \text{in}\;Ω,\\ -Δ_{p_2}u_2+\frac{|\nabla u_2|^{p_2}}{u_2+δ_2}=f_2(x,u_1,u_2,\nabla u_1,\nabla u_2)&\text{in}\;Ω, \\ |\nabla u_1|^{p_1-2}\frac{\partial u_1}{\partial η}=0=|\nabla u_2|^{p_2-2}\frac{\partial u_2}{\partial η}&\text{on}\;\partialΩ,\end{array}\right.\end{equation*}where ΩΩ is a bounded domain in RN\mathbb{R}^{N} (N≥2N\geq 2) with a smooth boundary ∂Ω\partialΩ,δ1, δ2>0δ_1,\,δ_2 >0 are small parameters, ηη is the outward unit vector normal to ∂Ω,\partial Ω, f1, f2:Ω×R2×R2N→Rf_1,\,f_2:Ω\times\mathbb{R}^2\times\mathbb{R}^{2N}\rightarrow \mathbb{R} are Carathéodory functions that satisfy certain growth conditions, and ΔpiΔ_{p_i} (1<pi<N,1<p_i<N, for i=1,2i=1,2) are the pp-Laplace operators Δpiui=div(∣∇ui∣pi−2∇ui)Δ_{p_i}u_i=\mathrm{div}(|\nabla u_i|^{p_i-2}\nabla u_i),for every  ui∈W1,pi(Ω).\,u_i\in W^{1,p_i}(Ω). In order to prove the existence of solutions to such systems, we use a sub-supersolution method. We also obtain nodal solutions by constructing appropriate sub-solution and super-solution pairs. To the best of our knowledge, such systems have not been studied yet.

Limits of manifolds in the Gromov-Hausdorff metric space

We apply the Gromov-Hausdorff metric dGd_G for characterization of certain generalized manifolds. Previously, we have proved that with respect to the metric dG,d_G, generalized nn-manifolds are limits of spaces which are obtained by gluing two topological nn-manifolds by a controlled homotopy equivalence (the so-called 22-patch spaces). In the present paper, we consider the so-called {\sl manifold-like} generalized nn-manifolds Xn,X^{n}, introduced in 1966 by Mardešić and Segal, which are characterized by the existence of δδ-mappings fδf_δ of XnX^n onto closed manifolds Mδn,M^{n}_δ, for arbitrary small δ>0δ>0, i.e. there exist onto maps fδ ⁣:Xn→Mδnf_δ\colon X^{n}\to M^{n}_δ such that for every u∈Mδnu\in M^{n}_δ, fδ−1(u)f^{-1}_δ(u) has diameter less than δδ. We prove that with respect to the metric dG,d_G, manifold-like generalized nn-manifolds XnX^{n} are limits of topological nn-manifolds MinM^{n}_{i}. Moreover, if topological nn-manifolds MinM^{n}_{i} satisfy a certain local contractibility condition M(ϱ,n)\mathcal{M}(\varrho, n), we prove that generalized nn-manifold XnX^{n} is resolvable.

Anisotropic singular Neumann equations with unbalanced growth

We consider a nonlinear parametric Neumann problem driven by the anisotropic (p,q)(p,q)-Laplacian and a reaction which exhibits the combined effects of a singular term and of a parametric superlinear perturbation. We are looking for positive solutions. Using a combination of topological and variational tools together with suitable truncation and comparison techniques, we prove a bifurcation-type result describing the set of positive solutions as the positive parameter λλ varies. We also show the existence of minimal positive solutions uλ∗u_λ^* and determine the monotonicity and continuity properties of the map λ↦uλ∗λ\mapsto u_λ^*.

Degenerate fractional Kirchhoff-type system with magnetic fields and upper critical growth

This paper deals with the following degenerate fractional Kirchhoff-type system with magnetic fields and critical growth: $$ \left\{ \begin{array}{lll} -\mathfrak{M}(\|u\|_{s,A}^2)[(-Δ)^s_Au+u] = G_u(|x|,|u|^2,|v|^2) + \left(\mathcal{I}_μ*|u|^{p^*}\right)|u|^{p^*-2}u \ &\mbox{in}\,\,\mathbb{R}^N,\\ \mathfrak{M}(\|v\|_{s,A})[(-Δ)^s_Av+v] = G_v(|x|,|u|^2,|v|^2) + \left(\mathcal{I}_μ*|v|^{p^*}\right)|v|^{p^*-2}v \ &\mbox{in}\,\,\mathbb{R}^N, \end{array}\right. $$ where ∥u∥s,A=(∬R2N∣u(x)−ei(x−y)⋅A(x+y2)u(y)∣2∣x−y∣N+2sdxdy+∫RN∣u∣2dx)1/2,\|u\|_{s,A}=\left(\iint_{\mathbb{R}^{2N}}\frac{|u(x)-e^{i(x-y)\cdot A(\frac{x+y}{2})}u(y)|^2}{|x-y|^{N+2s}}dx dy+\int_{\mathbb{R}^N}|u|^2dx\right)^{1/2}, and (−Δ)As(-Δ)_{A}^s and AA are called magnetic operator and magnetic potential, respectively. M:R0+→R0+\mathfrak{M}:\mathbb{R}^{+}_{0}\rightarrow \mathbb{R}^{+}_0 is a continuous Kirchhoff function, Iμ(x)=∣x∣N−μ\mathcal{I}_μ(x) = |x|^{N-μ} with 0<μ<N0<μ<N, C1C^1-function GG satisfies some suitable conditions, and p∗=N+μN−2sp^* =\frac{N+μ}{N-2s}. We prove the multiplicity results for this problem using the limit index theory. The novelty of our work is the appearance of convolution terms and critical nonlinearities. To overcome the difficulty caused by degenerate Kirchhoff function and critical nonlinearity, we introduce several analytical tools and the fractional version concentration-compactness principles which are useful tools for proving the compactness condition.

Free groups as end homogeneity groups of 33-manifolds

For every finitely generated free group FF, we construct an irreducible open 33-manifold MFM_F whose end set is homeomorphic to a Cantor set, and with the end homogeneity group of MFM_F isomorphic to FF. The end homogeneity group is the group of all self-homeomorphisms of the end set that extend to homeomorphisms of the entire 33-manifold. This extends an earlier result that constructs, for each finitely generated abelian group GG, an irreducible open 33-manifold MGM_G with end homogeneity group GG. The method used in the proof of our main result also shows that if GG is a group with a Cayley graph in R3\mathbb{R}^3 such that the graph automorphisms have certain nice extension properties, then there is an irreducible open 33-manifold MGM_G with end homogeneity group GG.

Generalized manifolds, normal invariants, and L\mathbb{L}-homology

Let XnX^{n} be an arbitrary oriented closed generalized nn-manifold, n≥5n\ge 5. In our recent paper (Proc. Edinb. Math. Soc. (2) 63 (2020), no. 2, 597-607) we have constructed a map t:N(Xn)→Hnst(Xn;L+)t:\mathcal{N}(X^{n}) \to H^{st}_{n} ( X^{n}; \mathbb{L}^+) which extends the normal invariant map for the case when XnX^{n} is a topological nn-manifold. Here, N(Xn)\mathcal{N}(X^{n}) denotes the set of all normal bordism classes of degree one normal maps (f,b):Mn→Xn,(f,b): M^{n} \to X^{n}, and H∗st(Xn;E)H^{st}_{*} ( X^{n}; \mathbb{E}) denotes the Steenrod homology of the spectrum E\mathbb{E}. An important nontrivial question arose whether the map tt is bijective (note that this holds in the case that XnX^{n} is a topological nn-manifold). It is the purpose of this paper to prove that the answer to this question is affirmative.

On critical variable-order Kirchhoff type problems with variable singular exponent

We establish a continuous embedding Ws(⋅),2(Ω)↪Lα(⋅)(Ω)W^{s(\cdot),2}(Ω)\hookrightarrow L^{α(\cdot)}(Ω), where the variable exponent α(x)α(x) can be close to the critical exponent 2s∗(x)=2NN−2sˉ(x)2_{s}^*(x)=\frac{2N}{N-2\bar{s}(x)}, with sˉ(x)=s(x,x)\bar{s}(x)=s(x,x) for all x∈Ωˉx\in\barΩ. Subsequently, this continuous embedding is used to prove the multiplicity of solutions for critical nonlocal degenerate Kirchhoff problems with a variable singular exponent. Moreover, we also obtain the uniform L∞L^{\infty}-estimate of these infinite solutions by a bootstrap argument.

Anisotropic equations with indefinite potential and competing nonlinearities

We consider a nonlinear Dirichlet problem driven by a variable exponent pp-Laplacian plus an indefinite potential term. The reaction has the competing effects of a parametric concave (sublinear) term and of a convex (superlinear) perturbation (an anisotropic concave-convex problem). We prove a bifurcation-type theorem describing the changes in the set of positive solutions as the positive parameter λλ varies. Also, we prove the existence of minimal positive solutions.

Combined effects for non-autonomous singular biharmonic problems

We study the existence of nontrivial weak solutions for a class of generalized p(x)p(x)-biharmonic equations with singular nonlinearity and Navier boundary condition. The proofs combine variational and topological arguments. The approach developed in this paper allows for the treatment of several classes of singular biharmonic problems with variable growth arising in applied sciences, including the capillarity equation and the mean curvature problem.

Combined effects in nonlinear problems arising in the study of anisotropic continuous media

The paper deals with the study of a Lane-Emden-Fowler equation with Dirichlet boundary condition and variable potential functions. The analysis developed in this paper combines monotonicity methods with variational arguments. Remark (April 21, 2020): Our results were later studied also by D.-P. Controlled homotopy equivalences and structure sets of manifolds

For a closed topological nn--manifold KK and a map p:K→Bp:K\to B inducing an isomorphism π1(K)→π1(B)π_1(K)\toπ_1(B), there is a canonicaly defined morphism b:Hn+1(B,K,L)→S(K)b:H_{n+1}(B,K,\mathbb{L})\to \mathbb{S} (K), where L\mathbb{L} is the periodic simply-connected surgery spectrum and S(K)\mathbb{S} (K) is the topological structure set. We construct a refinement a:Hn+1+(B,K,L)→Sε,δ(K)a:H_{n+1}^{+}(B,K,\mathbb{L} )\to \mathbb{S}_{\varepsilon ,δ}(K) in the case when pp is UV1UV^1, and we show that aa is bijective if BB is a finite-dimensional compact metric ANR. Here, Hn+1+(B,K,L)⊂Hn+1(B,K,L)H_{n+1}^{+}(B,K,\mathbb{L} )\subset H_{n+1}(B,K,\mathbb{L} ), and Sε,δ(K)\mathbb{S}_{\varepsilon ,δ}(K) is the controlled structure set. We show that the Pedersen-Quinn-Ranicki controlled surgery sequence is equivalent to the exact L\mathbb{L}-homology sequence of the map p:K→Bp:K \to B, i.e. that Hn+1(B,L)→Hn+1+(B,K,L)→Hn(K,L+)→Hn(B,L), L+→L,H_{n+1}(B,\mathbb{L})\to H_{n+1}^{+}(B,K,\mathbb{L} )\to H_n(K,\mathbb{L}^{+})\to H_n(B,\mathbb{L} ), \ \mathbb{L}^{+}\to \mathbb{L}, is the connected covering spectrum of L\mathbb{L}. By taking for BB various stages of the Postnikov tower of KK, one obtains an interesting filtration of the controlled structure set.

Existence and localization of solutions for nonlocal fractional equations

This work is devoted to the study of the existence of at least one weak solution to nonlocal equations involving a general integro-differential operator of fractional type. As a special case, we derive an existence theorem for the fractional Laplacian, finding a nontrivial weak solution of the equation \begin{eqnarray*} \begin{cases} (-Δ)^s u=h(x)f(u) & {\mbox{ in }} Ω\\ u=0 & {\mbox{ in }} \mathbb{R}^n\setminus Ω, \end{cases} \end{eqnarray*} where h∈L+∞(Ω)∖{0}h\in L^{\infty}_+(Ω)\setminus\{0\} and f:R→Rf:\mathbb{R}\rightarrow\mathbb{R} is a suitable continuous function. These problems have a variational structure and we find a nontrivial weak solution for them by exploiting a recent local minimum result for smooth functionals defined on a reflexive Banach space. To make the nonlinear methods work, some careful analysis of the fractional spaces involved is necessary.

Existence results for some problems on Riemannian manifolds

By using variational techniques we provide new existence results for Yamabe-type equations with subcritical perturbations set on a compact dd-dimensional (d≥3d\geq 3) Riemannian manifold without boundary. As a direct consequence of our main theorems, we prove the existence of at least one solution to the following singular Yamabe-type problem $$ \left\lbrace \begin{array}{ll} -Δ_g w + α(σ)w = μK(σ) w^\frac{d+2}{d-2} +λ\left( w^{r-1} + f(w)\right), \quad σ\in\mathcal{M} &\\ &\\ w\in H^2_α(\mathcal{M}), \quad w>0 \ \ \mbox{in} \ \ \mathcal{M} & \end{array} \right.$$ where, as usual, ΔgΔ_g denotes the Laplace-Beltrami operator on (M,g)(\mathcal{M},g), α,K:M→Rα, K:\mathcal{M}\to\mathbb{R} are positive (essentially) bounded functions, r∈(0,1)r\in(0,1), and f:[0,+∞)→[0,+∞)f:[0,+\infty)\to[0,+\infty) is a subcritical continuous function. Restricting ourselves to the unit sphere Sd{\mathbb{S}}^d via the stereographic projection, we also solve some parametrized Emden-Fowler equations in the Euclidean case.

Fractional magnetic Schrödinger-Kirchhoff problems with convolution and critical nonlinearities

In this paper we are concerned with the existence and multiplicity of solutions for the fractional Choquard-type Schrödinger-Kirchhoff equations with electromagnetic fields and critical nonlinearity: \begin{eqnarray*} \begin{cases} \varepsilon^{2s}M([u]_{s,A}^2)(-Δ)_{A}^su + V(x)u = (|x|^{-α}*F(|u|^2))f(|u|^2)u + |u|^{2_s^\ast-2}u,\ \ \ x\in \mathbb{R}^N,\\ u(x) \rightarrow 0,\ \ \quad \mbox{as}\ |x| \rightarrow \infty, \end{cases} \end{eqnarray*} where (−Δ)As(-Δ)_{A}^s is the fractional magnetic operator with 0<s<10<s<1, 2s∗=2N/(N−2s)2_s^\ast = 2N/(N-2s), α<min⁡{N,4s}α< \min\{N, 4s\}, M:R0+→R0+M : \mathbb{R}^{+}_{0}\rightarrow \mathbb{R}^{+}_0 is a continuous function, A:RN→RNA: \mathbb{R}^N \rightarrow \mathbb{R}^N is the magnetic potential, F(∣u∣)=∫0∣u∣f(t)dtF(|u|) = \int_0^{|u|}f(t)dt, and ε>0\varepsilon > 0 is a positive parameter. The electric potential V∈C(RN,R0+)V\in C(\mathbb{R}^N, \mathbb{R}^+_0) satisfies V(x)=0V(x) = 0 in some region of RN\mathbb{R}^N, which means that this is the critical frequency case. We first prove the (PS)c(PS)_c condition, by using the fractional version of the concentration compactness principle. Then, applying also the mountain pass theorem and the genus theory, we obtain the existence and multiplicity of semiclassical states for the above problem. The main feature of our problems is that the Kirchhoff term MM can vanish at zero.

Nonlinear nonhomogeneous singular problems

We consider a nonlinear Dirichlet problem driven by a nonhomogeneous differential operator with a growth of order (p−1)(p-1) near +∞+\infty and with a reaction which has the competing effects of a parametric singular term and a (p−1)(p-1)-superlinear perturbation which does not satisfy the usual Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz condition. Using variational tools, together with suitable truncation and strong comparison techniques, we prove a "bifurcation-type" theorem that describes the set of positive solutions as the parameter λλ moves on the positive semiaxis. We also show that for every λ>0λ>0, the problem has a smallest positive solution uλ∗u^*_λ and we demonstrate the monotonicity and continuity properties of the map λ↦uλ∗λ\mapsto u^*_λ.

Nonlinear singular problems with indefinite potential term

We consider a nonlinear Dirichlet problem driven by a nonhomogeneous differential operator plus an indefinite potential. In the reaction we have the competing effects of a singular term and of concave and convex nonlinearities. In this paper the concave term is parametric. We prove a bifurcation-type theorem describing the changes in the set of positive solutions as the positive parameter λλ varies. This work continues our research published in arXiv:2004.12583, where ξ≡0ξ\equiv 0 and in the reaction the parametric term is the singular one.

Nonlinear, nonhomogeneous Robin problems with indefinite potential and general reaction

We consider a nonlinear elliptic equation driven by a nonhomogeneous differential operator plus an indefinite potential. On the reaction term we impose conditions only near zero. Using variational methods, together with truncation and perturbation techniques and critical groups, we produce three nontrivial solutions with sign information. In the semilinear case we improve this result by obtaining a second nodal solution for a total of four nontrivial solutions. Finally, under a symmetry condition on the reaction term, we generate a whole sequence of distinct nodal solutions.

On existence of PI-exponents of unital algebras

We construct a family of unital non-associative algebras {Tα∣ 2<α∈R}\{T_α\vert~ 2<α\in\mathbb R\} such that exp‾(Tα)=2\underline{exp}(T_α)=2, whereas α≤exp‾(Tα)≤α+1α\le\overline{exp}(T_α)\leα+1. In particular, it follows that ordinary PI-exponent of codimension growth of algebra TαT_α does not exist for any α>2α> 2. This is the first example of a unital algebra whose PI-exponent does not exist.

Relaxation methods for optimal control problems

We consider a nonlinear optimal control problem with dynamics described by a differential inclusion involving a maximal monotone map A:RN→2RNA:\mathbb{R}^N\rightarrow2^{\mathbb{R}^N}. We do not assume that D(A)=RND(A)=\mathbb{R}^N, incorporating in this way systems with unilateral constraints in our framework. We present two relaxation methods. The first one is an outgrowth of the reduction method from the existence theory, while the second method uses Young measures. We show that the two relaxation methods are equivalent and admissible.

Gradient-type systems on unbounded domains of the Heisenberg group

The purpose of this paper is to study the existence of weak solutions for some classes of one-parameter subelliptic gradient-type systems involving a Sobolev-Hardy potential defined on an unbounded domain ΩψΩ_ψ of the Heisenberg group Hn=Cn×R\mathbb{H}^n=\mathbb{C}^n\times \mathbb{R} (n≥1n\geq 1) whose geometrical profile is determined by two real positive functions ψ1ψ_1 and ψ2ψ_2 that are bounded on bounded sets. The treated problems have a variational structure and thanks to this, we are able to prove the existence of an open interval Λ⊂(0,∞)Λ\subset (0,\infty) such that, for every parameter λ∈Λλ\in Λ, the system has at least two nontrivial symmetric weak solutions that are uniformly bounded with respect to the Sobolev HW01,2HW^{1,2}_0-norm. Moreover, the existence is stable under certain small subcritical perturbations of the nonlinear term. The main proof, crucially based on the Palais principle of symmetric criticality, is obtained by developing a group-theoretical procedure on the unitary group U(n)=U(n)×{1}\mathbb{U}(n)=U(n)\times\{1\} and by exploiting some compactness embedding results into Lebesgue spaces, recently proved for suitable U(n)\mathbb{U}(n)-invariant subspaces of the Folland-Stein space HW01,2(Ωψ)HW^{1,2}_0(Ω_ψ). A key ingredient for our variational approach is a very general min-max argument valid for sufficiently smooth functionals defined on reflexive Banach spaces.
