Fock-space relativistic coupled-cluster calculation of hyperfine induced $\bf {^1S_0 \rightarrow {^3P^o_0}}$ clock transition in Al$^+$

We have developed an all-particle Fock-space relativistic coupled-cluster method to calculate the properties of two-valence atoms and ions. Using the method we compute the properties associated with hyperfine induced $^1S_0 - ^3P^o_0$ clock transition in Al$^+$. Our result of the $^3P^o_0$ metastable state life time, $20.20 \pm 0.91$ s, is in excellent agreement with the experimental value, $20.60 \pm 1.4$ s [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 98}, 220801 (2007)]. Our studies show that the contributions from the triple excitations, and the corrections from the Breit interaction and QED effects are essential to obtain accurate clock properties in Al$^+$.

Characteristic temperature for the immiscible-miscible transition of binary condensates in optical lattices

We study a two-species Bose-Einstein condensates confined in quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D) optical lattices at finite temperatures, employing the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory with the Popov approximation. We examine the role of thermal fluctuations on the ground-state density distributions, and the quasiparticle mode evolution. At zero temperature, the geometry of the ground-state in the immiscible domain is side-by-side. Our results show that the thermal fluctuations enhance the miscibility of the condensates, and at a characteristic temperature the system becomes miscible with rotationally symmetric overlapping density profiles. This immiscible-miscible transition is accompanied by a discontinuity in the excitation spectrum, and the low-lying quasiparticle modes such as slosh mode becomes degenerate at the characteristic temperature.

FACt: FORTRAN toolbox for calculating fluctuations in atomic condensates

We develop a FORTRAN code to compute fluctuations in atomic condensates (FACt) by solving the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) equations for two component Bose-Einstein condensate (TBEC) in quasi two dimensions. The BdG equations are recast as matrix equations and solved self consistently. The code is suitable for handling quantum fluctuations as well as thermal fluctuations at temperatures below the critical point of Bose-Einstein condensation. The code is versatile, and the ground state density profile and low energy excitation modes obtained from the code can be easily adapted to compute different properties of TBECs -- ground state energy, overlap integral, quasi particle amplitudes of BdG spectrum, dispersion relation and structure factor and other related experimental observables.

Supersolid phase of the extended Bose-Hubbard model with an artificial gauge field

We examine the zero and finite temperature phase diagrams of soft-core bosons of the extended Bose-Hubbard model on a square optical lattice. To study various quantum phases and their transitions we employ single-site and cluster Gutzwiller mean-field theory. We have observed that the Mott insulator phase vanishes above a critical value of nearest-neighbour interaction and the supersolid phase occupies a larger region in the phase diagram. We show that the presence of artificial gauge field enlarges the domain of supersolid phase. The finite temperature destroys the crystalline structure of the supersolid phase and thereby favours normal fluid to superfluid phase transition. The presence of an envelope harmonic potential demonstrates coexistence of different phases and at $z~k_{B}T\geqslant V$, thermal energy comparable and higher to the long-range interaction energy, the supersolidity of the system is destroyed.

Electric dipole polarizability of group-IIIA ions using PRCC: Large correlation effects from nonlinear terms

We compute the ground-state electric dipole polarizability of group-IIIA ions using the perturbed relativistic coupled-cluster (PRCC) theory. To account for the relativistic effects and QED corrections, we use the Dirac-Coulomb-Breit Hamiltonian with the corrections from the Uehling potential and the self-energy. The effects of triple excitations are considered perturbatively in the PRCC. Our PRCC results for $α$ are good in agreement with the previous theoretical results for all the ions. From our computations we find that the nonlinear terms in PRCC have significant contributions and must be included to obtain the accurate value of $α$ for group-IIIA ions. For the correction from the Breit interaction, we find that it is largest for Al$^+$ and decreases as we go towards the heavier ions. The corrections from the vacuum polarization and the self-energy increase from lighter to heavier ions.

Geometry-induced modification of fluctuation spectrum in quasi-two-dimensional condensates

We report the structural transformation of the low-lying spectral modes, especially the Kohn mode, from radial to circular topology as harmonic confining potential is modified to a toroidal one, and this corresponds to a transition from simply to multiply connected geometry. For this we employ the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory to examine the evolution of low energy quasiparticles. We, then, use the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory with the Popov approximation to demonstrate the two striking features of quantum and thermal fluctuations. At $T=0$, the non-condensate density due to interaction induced quantum fluctuations increases with the transformation from pancake to toroidal geometry. The other feature is, there is a marked change in the density profile of the non-condensate density at finite temperatures with the modification of trapping potential. In particular, the condensate and non-condensate density distributions have overlapping maxima in the toroidal condensate, which is in stark contrast to the case of pancake geometry. The genesis of this difference lies in the nature of the thermal fluctuations.

Optical lattice influenced geometry of quasi-2D binary condensates and quasiparticle spectra

We explore the collective excitations of optical lattices filled with two-species Bose-Einstein condensates (TBECs). We use a set of coupled discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equations to describe the system, and employ Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) theory with the Popov approximation to analyze the quasiparticle spectra at zero temperature. The ground state geometry, evolution of quasiparticle energies, structure of quasiparticle amplitudes, and dispersion relations are examined in detail. The trends observed are in stark contrast to the case of TBECs only with a harmonic confining potential. One key observation is the quasiparticle energies are softened as the system is tuned towards phase separation, but harden after phase separation and mode degeneracies are lifted.

Evolution of Goldstone mode in binary condensate mixtures

We show that the third Goldstone mode in the two-species condensate mixtures, which emerges at phase-separation, gets hardened when the confining potentials have separated trap centers. The {\em sandwich} type condensate density profiles, in this case, acquire a {\em side-by-side} density profile configuration. We use Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory with Popov approximation to examine the mode evolution and density profiles for these phase transitions at $T=0$.

Observation of the nuclear magnetic octupole moment of $^{173}$Yb from precise measurements of hyperfine structure in the ${^3P}_2$ state

We measure hyperfine structure in the metastable ${^3P}_2$ state of $^{173}$Yb and extract the nuclear magnetic octupole moment. We populate the state using dipole-allowed transitions through the ${^3P}_1$ and ${^3S}_1$ states. We measure frequencies of hyperfine transitions of the ${^3P}_2 \rightarrow {^3S}_1$ line at 770 nm using a Rb-stabilized ring cavity resonator with a precision of 200 kHz. Second-order corrections due to perturbations from the nearby ${^3P}_1$ and ${^1P}_1$ states are below 30 kHz. We obtain the hyperfine coefficients as: $A=-742.11(2)$ MHz, $B=1339.2(2)$ MHz, which represent two orders-of-magnitude improvement in precision, and $C=0.54(2)$ MHz. From atomic structure calculations, we obtain the nuclear moments: quadrupole $Q=2.46(12)$ b and octupole $Ω=-34.4(21)$ b\,$\times μ_N$.

Thermal suppression of phase separation in condensate mixtures

We examine the role of thermal fluctuations in binary condensate mixtures of dilute atomic gases. In particular, we use Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov with Popov approximation to probe the impact of non-condensate atoms to the phenomenon of phase-separation in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates. We demonstrate that, in comparison to $T=0$, there is a suppression in the phase-separation of the binary condensates at $T\neq0$. This arises from the interaction of the condensate atoms with the thermal cloud. We also show that, when $T\neq0$ it is possible to distinguish the phase-separated case from miscible from the trends in the correlation function. However, this is not the case at $T=0$.

Acoustic radiation from vortex-barrier interaction in atomic Bose-Einstein condensate

We examine the dynamics of a vortex dipole in the Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) of trapped dilute atomic gases at zero temperature in the presence of a Gaussian barrier potential. The density-anisotropy induced by the barrier enhances the acoustic radiation from the vortex dipole. This is due to the deviation of the condensate density from the equipotential curves and variation in the curvature of the vortex dipole trajectory. Due to the acoustic radiation, the vortex dipole dissipates energy and spirals towards the edge of the condensate. As a result, we observe an increase in the vortex-antivortex annihilation events. To examine the effect of the Gaussian barrier, we estimate the correction to the Thomas-Fermi condensate density using perturbation expansion method and the results are in very good agreement with the numerical results.

Electric dipole polarizability of alkaline-Earth-metal atoms from perturbed relativistic coupled-cluster theory with triples

The perturbed relativistic coupled-cluster (PRCC) theory is applied to calculate the electric dipole polarizabilities of alkaline Earth metal atoms. The Dirac-Coulomb-Breit atomic Hamiltonian is used and we include the triple excitations in the relativistic coupled-cluster (RCC) theory. The theoretical issues related to the triple excitation cluster operators are described in detail and we also provide details on the computational implementation. The PRCC theory results are in good agreement with the experimental and previous theoretical results. We, then, highlight the importance of considering the Breit interaction for alkaline Earth metal atoms.

Fluctuation and interaction induced instability of dark solitons in single and binary condensates

We show that the presence of soliton in a single-species condensate, at zero temperature, enhances the quantum depletion sufficient enough to induce dynamical instability of the system. We also predict that for two-species condensates, two Goldstone modes emerge in the excitation spectrum at phase separation. Of these, one is due to the presence of the soliton. We use Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory with Popov approximation to examine the mode evolution, and demonstrate that when the anomalous mode collides with a higher energy mode it renders the solitonic state oscillatory unstable. We also report soliton induced change in the topology of the density profiles of the two-species condensates at phase-separation.

Fluctuation driven topological transition of binary condensates in optical lattices

We show the emergence of a third Goldstone mode in binary condensates at the phase-separation in quasi-1D optical lattices. We develop the coupled discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equations (DNLSEs) using Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory with Popov approximation in the Bose-Hubbard model to investigate the mode evolution at zero temperature. In particular, as the system is driven from miscible to immiscible phase. We demonstrate that the position swapping of the species in $^{87}$Rb-$^{85}$Rb system is accompanied by a discontinuity in the excitation spectrum. Our results show that in quasi-1D optical lattices, the presence of the fluctuations dramatically change the geometry of the ground state density profile of TBEC.

Goldstone modes and bifurcations in phase-separated binary condensates at finite temperature

We show that the third Goldstone mode, which emerges in binary condensates at phase-separation, persists to higher inter-species interaction for density profiles where one component is surrounded on both sides by the other component. This is not the case with symmetry-broken density profiles where one species is to entirely to the left and the other is entirely to the right. We, then, use Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov theory with Popov approximation to examine the mode evolution at $T\neq0$ and demonstrate the existence of mode bifurcation near the critical temperature. The Kohn mode, however, exhibits deviation from the natural frequency at finite temperatures after the phase separation. This is due to the exclusion of the non-condensate atoms in the dynamics.

Triple excitations in perturbed relativistic coupled-cluster theory and Electric dipole polarizability of groupIIB elements

We use perturbed relativistic coupled-cluster (PRCC) theory to compute the electric dipole polarizabilities $α$ of Zn, Cd and Hg. The computations are done using the Dirac-Coulomb-Breit Hamiltonian with Uehling potential to incorporate vacuum polarization corrections. The triple excitations are included perturbatively in the PRCC theory, and in the unperturbed sector, it is included non-perturbatively. Our results of $α$, for all the three elements, are in excellent agreement with the experimental data. The other highlight of the results is the orbital energy corrections from Breit interactions. In the literature we could only get the data of Hg {E. Lindroth et al., J. Phys. B 22, 2447 (1989)} and are near perfect match with our results. We also present the linearized equations of the cluster amplitudes, including the triple excitations, with the angular factors.

Vortex reconnections between coreless vortices in binary condensates

Vortex reconnections plays an important role in the turbulent flows associated with the superfluids. To understand the dynamics, we examine the reconnections of vortex rings in the superfluids of dilute atomic gases confined in trapping potentials using Gross-Petaevskii equation. Furthermore we study the reconnection dynamics of coreless vortex rings, where one of the species can act as a tracer.

Electric dipole polarizabilities of doubly ionized alkaline Earth metal ions from perturbed relativistic coupled-cluster theory

Using perturbed relativistic coupled-cluster (PRCC) theory we compute the ground state electric dipole polarizability, $α$, of doubly ionized alkaline earth metal ions $\rm{Mg}^{2+}$, $\rm{Ca}^{2+}$, $\rm{Sr}^{2+}$, $\rm{Ba}^{2+}$ and $\rm{Ra}^{2+}$. In the present work we use the Dirac-Coulomb-Breit atomic Hamiltonian and we also include the Uehling potential, which is the leading order term in the vacuum polarization corrections. We examine the correction to the orbital energies arising from the Uehling potential in the self-consistent field calculations as well as perturbatively. Our results of $α$ are in very good agreement with the experimental data, and we observe a change in the nature of the orbital energy corrections arising from the vacuum polarization as we go from $\rm{Mg}^{2+}$ to Ra$^{2+}$.

Annihilation of vortex dipoles in an Oblate Bose-Einstein Condensate

We theoretically explore the annihilation of vortex dipoles, generated when an obstacle moves through an oblate Bose-Einstein condensate, and examine the energetics of the annihilation event. We show that the gray soliton, which results from the vortex dipole annihilation, is lower in energy than the vortex dipole. We also investigate the annihilation events numerically and observe that the annihilation occurs only when the vortex dipole overtakes the obstacle and comes closer than the coherence length. Furthermore, we find that the noise reduces the probability of annihilation events. This may explain the lack of annihilation events in experimental realizations.

Electric dipole polarizabilities of alkali metal ions from perturbed relativistic coupled-cluster theory

We use the perturbed relativistic coupled-cluster theory to compute the static electric dipole polarizabilities of the singly ionized alkali atoms, namely, Na$^+$, $^+$, Rb$^+$, Cs$^+$ and Fr$^+$. The computations use the Dirac-Coulomb-Breit Hamiltonian with the no-virual-pair approximation and we also estimate the correction to the static electric dipole polarizability arising from the Breit interaction.

Electric dipole polarizability from perturbed Relativistic Coupled-Cluster Theory: application to Neon

We develop a method based on the relativistic coupled-cluster theory to incorporate a perturbative interaction to the no-pair Dirac-Coulomb atomic Hamiltonian. The method is general and suitable to incorporate any perturbation Hamiltonian in a many electron atom or ion. Using this perturbed relativistic coupled-cluster (PRCC) theory we calculate the electric dipole polarizability, $α$, of Neon. The linearized PRCC results are in very good agreement with the experimental value. However, the results of the nonlinear PRCC shows larger uncertainty but it is consistent with the observations from earlier works.

Mode bifurcation in the Rayleigh-Taylor instability of binary condensates

We examine the generation and subsequent evolution of Rayleigh Taylor instability in anisotropic binary Bose-Einstein condensates. Considering a pancake-shaped geometry, to initiate the instability we tune the intraspecies interaction and analytically study the normal modes of the interface in elliptic cylindrical coordinates. The normal modes are then Mathieu functions and undergoes bifurcation at particular values of anisotropy and ratio of number of atoms. We find that the analytical estimates of the bifurcation parameters are in good agreement with the numerical results.

Perturbed Coupled-Cluster theory to calculate dipole polarizabilities of closed shell systems: Application to Ar, Kr, Xe and Rn

We use perturbed relativistic coupled-cluster (PRCC) theory to calculate the electric dipole polarizability of noble gas atoms Ar, Kr, Xe and Rn. We also provide a detailed description of the nonlinear terms in the PRCC theory and consider the Dirac-Coulomb-Breit atomic Hamiltonian for the calculations. We find that the largest contribution from Breit interaction to the electric dipole polarizability is 0.1%, in the case of Rn. As we go from Ar to Rn, based on the pattern in the random phase approximation effects, the contraction of the outermost $p_{1/2}$ due to relativistic corrections is discernible without any ambiguity.

Coreless vortex dipoles and bubbles in phase-separated binary condensates

Vortex dipoles are generated when an obstacle moves through a superfluid. In case of phase-separated binary condensates, with appropriate interaction parameters in pan-cake shaped traps, we show that coreless vortex dipoles are created when a Gaussian obstacle beam traverses across them above a critical speed. As the obstacle passes through the inner component, it carries along a bubble of the outer component. Using Thomas-Fermi approximation, we show that phase-separated binary condensates can either support vortices with empty or filled cores. For time dependent obstacle potentials, ramped down in the present case, relative energy scales of the system influence the dynamical evolution of the binary condensate.

Formation, dynamics and stability of coreless vortex dipoles in phase-separated binary condensates

We study the motion of the Gaussian obstacle potential created by blue detuned laser beam through a phase-separated binary condensate in pancake-shaped traps. For the velocity of the obstacle above a critical velocity, we observe the generation of vortex dipoles in the outer component which can penetrate the inner component. This is equivalent to finite, although small, transport of outer component across the inner component. In the inner component, the same method can lead to the formation of coreless vortex dipoles.

Relativistic coupled-cluster calculations of nuclear spin-dependent parity non-conservation in Cs, Ba$^+$ and Ra$^+$

We have developed a relativistic coupled-cluster theory to incorporate nuclear spin-dependent interaction Hamiltonians perturbatively. This theory is ideal to calculate parity violating nuclear spin-dependent electric dipole transition amplitudes, $E1_{\rm PNC}^{\rm NSD}$, of heavy atoms. Experimental observation of which is a clear signature of nuclear anapole moment, the dominant source of nuclear spin-dependent parity violation in atoms and ions. We apply the theory to calculate $E1_{\rm PNC}^{\rm NSD}$ of Cs, which to date has provided the best atomic parity violation measurements. We also calculate $E1_{\rm PNC}^{\rm NSD}$ of Ba$^+ $ and Ra$^+$, candidates of ongoing and proposed experiments.

Relativistic coupled-cluster theory of nuclear spin-dependent parity non-conservation

We have developed a relativistic coupled-cluster theory to incorporate nuclear spin-dependent interaction Hamiltonians perturbatively. In this theory, the coupled-cluster operators in the electronic sector are defined as tensor operators of rank one and we introduce suitable diagrammatic representations. For properties calculations, the electronic part is first calculated and later coupled to the nuclear spin part. The method is ideal to calculate parity violating nuclear spin-dependent electric dipole transition amplitudes, $E1_{\rm PNC}^{\rm NSD}$, of heavy atoms. To validate the proposed method the $E1_{\rm PNC}^{\rm NSD}$ of the transition $6\; ^2S_{1/2} \rightarrow 7\; ^2S_{1/2}$ in $^{133}$Cs is calculated for selected MBPT diagrams and compared with the results from our theory.

Fock space relativistic coupled-Cluster calculations of Two-Valence Atoms

We have developed an all particle Fock-space relativistic coupled-cluster method for two-valence atomic systems. We then describe a scheme to employ the coupled-cluster wave function to calculate atomic properties. Based on these developments we calculate the excitation energies, magnetic hyperfine constants and electric dipole matrix elements of Sr, Ba and Yb. Further more, we calculate the electric quadrupole HFS constants and the electric dipole matrix elements of Sr$^+$, Ba$^+$ and Yb$^+$. For these we use the one-valence coupled-cluster wave functions obtained as an intermediate in the two-valence calculations. We also calculate the magnetic dipole hyperfine constants of Yb$^+$.

Position swapping and pinching in Bose-Fermi mixtures with two-color optical Feshbach resonances

We examine the density profiles of the quantum degenerate Bose-Fermi mixture of $^{174}$Yb-$^{173}$Yb, experimental observed recently, in the mean field regime. In this mixture there is a possibility of tuning the Bose-Bose and Bose-Fermi interactions simultaneously using two well separated optical Feshbach resonances, and it is a good candidate to explore phase separation in Bose-Fermi mixtures. Depending on the Bose-Bose scattering length $a_\BB$, as the Bose-Fermi interaction is tuned the density of the fermions is pinched or swapping with bosons occurs.

Ground State Geometry of Binary Condensates in Axisymmetric Traps

We show that the ground state interface geometry of binary condensates in the phase separated regime undergoes a smooth transition from planar to ellipsoidal to cylindrical geometry. This occurs for condensates with repulsive interactions as the trapping potential is changed from prolate to oblate. The correct ground state geometry emerges when the interface energy is included in the energy minimization. Where as energy minimization based on Thomas-Fermi approximation gives incorrect geometry.

Properties from relativistic coupled-cluster without truncation: hyperfine constants of $^{25}{\rm Mg}^+$, $^{43}{\rm Ca}^+ $, $^{87}{\rm Sr}^+ $ and $^{137}{\rm Ba}^+$

We demonstrate an iterative scheme for coupled-cluster properties calculations without truncating the dressed properties operator. For validation, magnetic dipole hyperfine constants of alkaline Earth ions are calculated with relativistic coupled-cluster and role of electron correlation examined. Then, a detailed analysis of the higher order terms is carried out. Based on the results, we arrive at an optimal form of the dressed operator. Which we recommend for properties calculations with relativistic coupled-cluster theory.

p-wave phase shift and scattering length of $^6$Li

We have calculated the p-wave phase shifts and scattering length of $^6$Li. For this we solve the $p$ partial wave Schrödinger equation and analyze the validity of adopting the semiclassical solution to evaluate the constant factors in the solution. Unlike in the $s$ wave case, the semiclassical solution does not provide unique value of the constants. We suggest an approximate analytic solution, which provides reliable results in special cases. Further more, we also use the variable phase method to evaluate the phase shifts. The p-wave scattering lengths of $^{132}$Cs and $^{134}$Cs are calculated to validate the schemes followed. Based on our calculations, the value of the $p$ wave scattering length of $^6$Li is $-45a_o$.

Strength functions, entropies and duality in weakly to strongly interacting fermionic systems

We revisit statistical wavefunction properties of finite systems of interacting fermions in the light of strength functions and their participation ratio and information entropy. For weakly interacting fermions in a mean-field with random two-body interactions of increasing strength $λ$, the strength functions $F_k(E)$ are well known to change, in the regime where level fluctuations follow Wigner's surmise, from Breit-Wigner to Gaussian form. We propose an ansatz for the function describing this transition which we use to investigate the participation ratio $ξ_2$ and the information entropy $S^{\rm info}$ during this crossover, thereby extending the known behavior valid in the Gaussian domain into much of the Breit-Wigner domain. Our method also allows us to derive the scaling law for the duality point $λ= λ_d$, where $F_k(E)$, $ξ_2$ and $S^{\rm info}$ in both the weak ($λ=0$) and strong mixing ($λ= \infty$) basis coincide as $λ_d \sim 1/\sqrt{m}$, where $m$ is the number of fermions. As an application, the ansatz function for strength functions is used in describing the Breit-Wigner to Gaussian transition seen in neutral atoms CeI to SmI with valence electrons changing from 4 to 8.
