Quasimodular forms and modular differential equations which are not apparent at cusps: I

In this paper, we explore a two-way connection between quasimodular forms of depth $1$ and a class of second-order modular differential equations with regular singularities on the upper half-plane and the cusps. Here we consider the cases $Γ=Γ_0^+(N)$ generated by $Γ_0(N)$ and the Atkin-Lehner involutions for $N=1,2,3$ ($Γ_0^+(1)=\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb Z)$). Firstly, we note that a quasimodular form of depth $1$, after divided by some modular form with the same weight, is a solution of a modular differential equation. Our main results are the converse of the above statement for the groups $Γ_0^+(N)$, $N=1,2,3$.

A necessary and sufficient condition for the Darboux-Treibich-Verdier potential with its spectrum contained in $\mathbb{R}$

In this paper, we study the spectrum of the complex Hill operator $L=\frac{d^2}{dx^2}+q(x;τ)$ in $L^2(\mathbb{R},\mathbb{C})$ with the Darboux-Treibich-Verdier potential \[q(x;τ):=-\sum_{k=0}^{3}n_{k}(n_{k}+1)\wp \left( x+z_0+\tfrac{ω_{k}}{2};τ\right),\] where $n_k\in\mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}$ with $\max n_k\geq 1$ and $z_0\in\mathbb{C}$ is chosen such that $q(x;τ)$ has no singularities on $\mathbb{R}$. For any fixed $τ\in i\mathbb{R}_{>0}$, we give a necessary and sufficient condition on $(n_0,n_1,n_2,n_3)$ to guarantee that the spectrum $σ(L)$ is \[σ(L)=(-\infty, E_{2g}]\cup[E_{2g-1}, E_{2g-2}]\cup \cdots \cup[E_{1}, E_{0}],\quad E_j\in \mathbb{R},\] and hence generalizes Ince's remarkable result in 1940 for the Lamé potential to the Darboux-Treibich-Verdier potential. We also determine the number of (anti)periodic eigenvalues in each bounded interval $(E_{2j-1}$, $E_{2j-2})$, which generalizes the recent result in \cite{HHV} where the Lamé case $n_1=n_2=n_3=0$ was studied.

Blow up at infinity in the SU(3) Chern-Simons model, part I

We consider non-topological solutions of a nonlinear elliptic system problem derived from the $SU(3)$ Chern-Simons models in $\mathbb{R}^2$. The existence of non-topological solutions even for radial symmetric case has been a long standing open problem. Recently, [Choe, Kim, Lin (2015, 2016)] showed the existence of radial symmetric non-topological solution when the vortex points collapse. However, the arguments in [Choe, Kim, Lin (2015, 2016)] cannot work for an arbitrary configuration of vortex points. In this paper, we develop a new approach by using different scalings for different components of the system to construct a family of non-topological solutions, which blows up at infinity.

The geometry of generalized Lame equation, III: One-to-one of the Riemann-Hilbert correspondence

In this paper, the third in a series, we continue to study the generalized Lamé equation H$(n_0,n_1,n_2,n_3;B)$ with the Darboux-Treibich-Verdier potential \begin{equation*} y^{\prime \prime }(z)=\bigg[ \sum_{k=0}^{3}n_{k}(n_{k}+1)\wp(z+\tfrac{ ω_{k}}{2}|τ)+B\bigg] y(z),\quad n_{k}\in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq0} \end{equation*} and a related linear ODE with additional singularities $\pm p$ from the monodromy aspect. We establish the uniqueness of these ODEs with respect to the global monodromy data. Surprisingly, our result shows that the Riemann-Hilbert correspondence from the set \[\{\text{H}(n_0,n_1,n_2,n_3;B)|B\in\mathbb{C}\}\cup \{\text{H}(n_0+2,n_1,n_2,n_3;B) | B\in\mathbb{C}\}\] to the set of group representations $ρ:π_1(E_τ)\to SL(2,\mathbb{C})$ is one-to-one. We emphasize that this result is not trivial at all. There is an example that for $τ=\frac12+i\frac{\sqrt{3}}{2}$, there are $B_1,B_2$ such that the monodromy representations of H$(1,0,0,0;B_1)$ and H$(4,0,0,0;B_2)$ are {\bf the same}, namely the Riemann-Hilbert correspondence from the set \[\{\text{H}(n_0,n_1,n_2,n_3;B)|B\in\mathbb{C}\}\cup \{\text{H}(n_0+3,n_1,n_2,n_3;B) | B\in\mathbb{C}\}\] to the set of group representations is {\bf not} necessarily one-to-one. This example shows that our result is completely different from the classical one concerning linear ODEs defined on $\mathbb{CP}^1$ with finite singularities.

On $SU(3)$ Toda system with multiple singular sources

We consider the singular $SU(3)$ Toda system with multiple singular sources \begin{align*} \left\{\begin{array}{ll}-Δw_1=2e^{2w_1}-e^{w_2}+2π\sum_{\ell=1}^mβ_{1,\ell}δ_{P_{\ell}}\quad\text{in }\mathbb{R}^2\\ \rule{0cm}{.5cm} -Δw_2=2e^{2w_2}-e^{w_1}+2π\sum_{\ell=1}^mβ_{2,\ell}δ_{P_{\ell}}\quad\text{in }\mathbb{R}^2 \\ w_i(x)=-2\log|x|+O(1)\quad\text{as }|x|\to\infty,\, i=1,2, \end{array}\right.\end{align*} with $m\geq 3$ and $β_{i,\ell}\in [0,1)$. We prove the existence and non-existence results under suitable assumptions on $β_{i,\ell}$. This generalizes Luo-Tian's \cite{Luo-Tian} result for a singular Liouville equation in $\mathbb{R}^2$. We also study existence results for a higher order singular Liouville equation in $\mathbb{R}^n$.

Geometric quantities arising from bubbling analysis of mean field equations

Let $E = \Bbb C/Λ$ be a flat torus and $G$ be its Green function with singularity at $0$. Consider the multiple Green function $G_n$ on $E^n$: $$G_{n}(z_1,\cdots,z_n) := \sum_{i < j} G(z_{i} - z_{j}) - n \sum_{i = 1} ^{n} G(z_{i}).$$ A critical point $a = (a_1, \cdots, a_n)$ of $G_n$ is called trivial if $\{a_1, \cdots, a_n\} = \{-a_1, \cdots, -a_n\}$. For such a point $a$, two geometric quantities $D(a)$ and $H(a)$ arising from bubbling analysis of mean field equations are introduced. $D(a)$ is a global quantity measuring asymptotic expansion and $H(a)$ is the Hessian of $G_n$ at $a$. By way of geometry of Lamé curves developed in our previous paper (Cambridge J. Math 3, 2015), we derive precise formulas to relate these two quantities.

Mean field equations, hyperelliptic curves and modular forms: II

A pre-modular form $Z_n(σ; τ)$ of weight $\tfrac{1}{2} n(n + 1)$ is introduced for each $n \in \Bbb N$, where $(σ, τ) \in \Bbb C \times \Bbb H$, such that for $E_τ= \Bbb C/(\Bbb Z + \Bbb Z τ)$, every non-trivial zero of $Z_n(σ; τ)$, namely $σ\not\in E_τ[2]$, corresponds to a (scaling family of) solution to the mean field equation \begin{equation} \tag{MFE} \triangle u + e^u = ρ\, δ_0 \end{equation} on the flat torus $E_τ$ with singular strength $ρ= 8πn$. In Part I (Cambridge J. Math. 3, 2015), a hyperelliptic curve $\bar X_n(τ) \subset {\rm Sym}^n E_τ$, the Lamé curve, associated to the MFE was constructed. Our construction of $Z_n(σ; τ)$ relies on a detailed study on the correspondence $\Bbb P^1 \leftarrow \bar X_n(τ) \to E_τ$ induced from the hyperelliptic projection and the addition map. As an application of the explicit form of the weight 10 pre-modular form $Z_4(σ; τ)$, a counting formula for Lamé equations of degree $n = 4$ with finite monodromy is given in the appendix (by Y.-C. Chou).

Toda systems and hypergeometric equations

This paper establishes certain existence and classification results for solutions to $SU(n)$ Toda systems with three singular sources at 0, 1, and $\infty$. First, we determine the necessary conditions for such an $SU(n)$ Toda system to be related to an $n$th order hypergeometric equation. Then, we construct solutions for $SU(n)$ Toda systems that satisfy the necessary conditions and also the interlacing conditions from Beukers and Heckman. Finally, for $SU(3)$ Toda systems satisfying the necessary conditions, we classify, under a natural reality assumption, that all the solutions are related to hypergeometric equations. This proof uses the Pohozaev identity.

Energy concentration and a priori estimates for $B_2$ and $G_2$ types of Toda systems

For Toda systems with Cartan matrix either $B_2$ or $G_2$, we prove that the local mass of blowup solutions at its blowup points converges to a finite set. Further more this finite set can be completely determined for $B_2$ Toda systems, while for $G_2$ systems we need one additional assumption. As an application of the local mass classification we establish a priori estimates for corresponding Toda systems defined on Riemann surfaces.

Hamiltonian system for the elliptic form of Painlevé VI equation

In literature, it is known that any solution of Painlevé VI equation governs the isomonodromic deformation of a second order linear Fuchsian ODE on $\mathbb{CP}^{1}$. In this paper, we extend this isomonodromy theory on $\mathbb{CP}^{1}$ to the moduli space of elliptic curves by studying the isomonodromic deformation of the generalized Lamé equation. Among other things, we prove that the isomonodromic equation is a new Hamiltonian system, which is equivalent to the elliptic form of Painlevé VI equation for generic parameters. For Painlevé VI equation with some special parameters, the isomonodromy theory of the generalized Lamé equation greatly simplifies the computation of the monodromy group in $\mathbb{CP}^{1}$. This is one of the advantages of the elliptic form.

Local profile of fully bubbling solutions to SU(n+1) Toda Systems

In this article we prove that for locally defined singular SU(n+1) Toda systems in R^2, the profile of fully bubbling solutions near the singular source can be accurately approximated by global solutions. The main ingredients of our new approach are the classification theorem of Lin-Wei-Ye and the non-degeneracy of the linearized Toda system, which make us overcome the difficulties that come from the lack of symmetry and the singular source.

Mean field equations, hyperelliptic curves and modular forms: I

We develop a theory connecting the following three areas: (a) the mean field equation (MFE) $\triangle u + e^u = ρ\, δ_0$, $ρ\in \mathbb R_{>0}$ on flat tori $E_τ= \mathbb C/(\mathbb Z + \mathbb Zτ)$, (b) the classical Lamé equations and (c) modular forms. A major theme in part I is a classification of developing maps $f$ attached to solutions $u$ of the mean field equation according to the type of transformation laws (or monodromy) with respect to $Λ$ satisfied by $f$. We are especially interested in the case when the parameter $ρ$ in the mean field equation is an integer multiple of $4π$. In the case when $ρ= 4π(2n + 1)$ for a non-negative integer $n$, we prove that the number of solutions is $n + 1$ except for a finite number of conformal isomorphism classes of flat tori, and we give a family of polynomials which characterizes the developing maps for solutions of mean field equations through the configuration of their zeros and poles. Modular forms appear naturally already in the simplest situation when $\,ρ=4π$. In the case when $ρ= 8πn$ for a positive integer $n$, the solvability of the MFE depends on the \emph{moduli} of the flat tori $E_τ$ and leads naturally to a hyperelliptic curve $\bar X_n=\bar X_{n}(τ)$ arising from the Hermite-Halphen ansatz solutions of Lamé's differential equation $\frac{d^2 w}{dz^2}-(n(n+1)\wp(z;Λ_τ) + B) w=0$. We analyse the curve $\bar X_n$ from both the analytic and the algebraic perspective, including its local coordinate near the point at infinity, which turns out to be a smooth point of $\bar{X}_n$. We also specify the role of the branch points of the hyperelliptic projection $\bar X_n \to \mathbb P^1$ when the parameter $ρ$ varies in a neighborhood of $ρ= 8πn$.

Existence of non-topological solutions for a skew-symmetric Chern-Simons system

We investigate the existence of non-topological solutions $(u_1,u_2)$ satisfying $$u_{i}(x)=-2β_i\ln|x|+O(1),\quad\text{as }|x|\rightarrow +\infty,$$ such that $β_i>1$ and $$(β_1-1)(β_2-1)>(N_1+1)(N_2+1),$$ for a skew-symmetric Chern-Simons system. By the bubbling analysis and the Leray-Schauder degree theory, we get the existence results except for a finite set of curves: $$\frac{N_1}{β_1+N_1}+\frac{N_2}{β_2+N_2}=\frac{k-1}{k},k=2,\cdots,\max(N_1,N_2).$$ This generalizes a previous work by Choe-Kim-Lin \cite{ChoeKimLin2011}.

Infinitely many sign-changing and semi-nodal solutions for a nonlinear Schrodinger system

We study the following coupled Schrödinger equations which have appeared as several models from mathematical physics: {displaymath} {cases}-Δu_1 +\la_1 u_1 = μ_1 u_1^3+βu_1 u_2^2, \quad x\in Ω, -Δu_2 +\la_2 u_2 =μ_2 u_2^3+βu_1^2 u_2, \quad x\in \Om, u_1=u_2=0 \,\,\,\hbox{on \,$\partial\Om$}.{cases}{displaymath} Here $\Om$ is a smooth bounded domain in $\R^N (N=2, 3)$ or $\Om=\RN$, $\la_1,\, \la_2$, $μ_1,\,μ_2$ are all positive constants and the coupling constant $\bb<0$. We show that this system has infinitely many sign-changing solutions. We also obtain infinitely many semi-nodal solutions in the following sense: one component changes sign and the other one is positive. The crucial idea of our proof, which has never been used for this system before, is turning to study a new problem with two constraints. Finally, when $\Om$ is a bounded domain, we show that this system has a least energy sign-changing solution, both two components of which have exactly two nodal domains, and we also study the asymptotic behavior of solutions as $β\to -\infty$ and phase separation is expected.

Isomonodromy aspects of the tt* equations of Cecotti and Vafa I. Stokes data

We describe all smooth solutions of the two-function tt*-Toda equations (a version of the tt* equations, or equations for harmonic maps into SL(n,R)/SO(n)) in terms of (i) asymptotic data, (ii) holomorphic data, and (iii) monodromy data. This allows us to find all solutions with integral Stokes data. These include solutions associated to nonlinear sigma models (quantum cohomology) or Landau-Ginzburg models (unfoldings of singularities), as conjectured by Cecotti and Vafa.

On Non-topological Solutions of the ${\bf G}_2$ Chern-Simons System

For any rank 2 of simple Lie algebra, the relativistic Chern-Simons system has the following form: \begin{equation}\label{e001} \left\{\begin{array}{c} Δu_1+(\sum_{i=1}^2K_{1i}e^{u_i} -\sum_{i=1}^2\sum_{j=1}^2e^{u_i}K_{1i}e^{u_j}K_{ij})=4π\displaystyle \sum_{j=1}^{N_1}δ_{p_j}\\ Δu_2+ (\sum_{i=1}^2K_{2i}e^{u_i}-\sum_{i=1}^2\sum_{j=1}^2e^{u_i}K_{2i}e^{u_j}K_{ij})=4π\displaystyle \sum_{j=1}^{N_2}δ_{q_j} \end{array} \right.\mbox{in}\; \mathbb{R}^2, \end{equation} where $K$ is the Cartan matrix of rank $2$. There are three Cartan matrix of rank 2: ${\bf A}_2$, ${\bf B}_2$ and ${\bf G}_2$. A long-standing open problem for \eqref{e001} is the question of the existence of non-topological solutions. In a previous paper \cite{ALW}, we have proven the existence of non-topological solutions for the ${\bf A}_2$ and ${\bf B}_2$ Chern-Simons system. In this paper, we continue to consider the ${\bf G}_2$ case. We prove the existence of non-topological solutions under the condition that either $N_2\displaystyle\sum_{j=1}^{N_1} p_j=N_1\displaystyle \sum_{j=1}^{N_2} q_j $ or $N_2\displaystyle\sum_{j=1}^{N_1}p_j \not =N_1\displaystyle \sum_{j=1}^{N_2} q_j$ and $N_1,N_2>1$, $ |N_1-N_2|\neq 1$. We solve this problem by a perturbation from the corresponding ${\bf G}_2$ Toda system with one singular source. Combining with \cite{ALW}, we have proved the existence of non-topological solutions to the Chern-Simons system with Cartan matrix of rank $2$.

Removable singularity of positive solutions for a critical elliptic system with isolated singularity

We study qualitative properties of positive singular solutions to a two-coupled elliptic system with critical exponents. This system is related to coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations with critical exponents for nonlinear optics and Bose-Einstein condensates. We prove a sharp result on the removability of the same isolated singularity for both two components of the solutions. We also prove the nonexistence of positive solutions with one component bounded near the singularity and the other component unbounded near the singularity. These results will be applied in a subsequent work where the same system in a punctured ball will be studied.

Uniqueness of topological multi-vortex solutions for a skew-symmetric Chern-Simons system

Consider the following skew-symmetric Chern-Simons system \begin{equation*}\left \{ \begin{split} &Δu_{1}+\frac{1}{\varepsilon^2} e^{u_{2}}(1-e^{u_{1}})=4π\sum^{N_1}_{j=1}δ_{p_{j,1}}\\ &Δu_{2}+\frac{1}{\varepsilon^2} e^{u_{1}}(1-e^{u_{2}})=4π\sum^{N_2}_{j=1}δ_{p_{j,2}} \end{split}\right.\quad\text{ in }\quadΩ, \end{equation*} where $Ω$ is a flat 2-dimensional torus $\mathbb{T}^2$ or $\mathbb{R}^2$, $\varepsilon> 0$ is a coupling parameter, and $δ_p$ denotes the Dirac measure concentrated at $p$. In this paper, we prove that, when the coupling parameter $\varepsilon$ is small, the topological type solutions to the above system are uniquely determined by the location of their vortex points. This result follows by the bubbling analysis and the non-degency of linearized equations.

Uniqueness of topological solutions of self-dual Chern-Simons equation with collapsing vortices

We consider the following Chern-Simons equation, \begin{equation} \label{0.1} Δu+\frac 1{\varepsilon^2} e^u(1-e^u)=4π\sum_{i=1}^N δ_{p_i^\varepsilon},\quad \text{in}\quad Ω, \end{equation} where $Ω$ is a 2-dimensional flat torus, $\varepsilon>0$ is a coupling parameter and $δ_p$ stands for the Dirac measure concentrated at $p$. In this paper, we proved that the topological solutions of \eqref{0.1} are uniquely determined by the location of their vortices provided the coupling parameter $\varepsilon$ is small and the collapsing velocity of vortices $p_i^\varepsilon$ is slow enough or fast enough comparing with $\varepsilon$. This extends the uniqueness results of Choe \cite{Choe2005} and Tarantello \cite{Tarantello2007}. Meanwhile, for any topological solution $ψ$ defined in $\mathbb R^2$ whose linearized operator is non-degenerate, we construct a sequence topological solutions $u_\varepsilon$ of \eqref{0.1} whose asymptotic limit is exactly $ψ$ after rescaling around $0$. A consequence is that non-uniqueness of topological solutions in $\mathbb R^2$ implies non-uniqueness of topological solutions on torus with collapsing vortices.

Asymptotic analysis of solutions to a gauged O(3) sigma model

We analyze an elliptic equation arising in the study of the gauged O(3) sigma model with the Chern-Simons term. In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of solutions and apply it to prove the uniqueness of stable solutions. However, one of the features of this nonlinear equation is the existence of stable nontopological solutions in $\RN$, which implies the possibility that a stable solution which blows up at a vortex point exists. To exclude this kind of blow up behavior is one of the main difficulties which we have to overcome.

Chern--Simons Vortices in the Gudnason Model

We present a series of existence theorems for multiple vortex solutions in the Gudnason model of the ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric field theory where non-Abelian gauge fields are governed by the pure Chern--Simons dynamics at dual levels and realized as the solutions of a system of elliptic equations with exponential nonlinearity over two-dimensional domains. In the full plane situation, our method utilizes a minimization approach, and in the doubly periodic situation, we employ an-inequality constrained minimization approach. In the latter case, we also obtain sufficient conditions under which we show that there exist at least two gauge-distinct solutions for any prescribed distribution of vortices. In other words, there are distinct solutions with identical vortex distribution, energy, and electric and magnetic charges.

If all $β_i$s are negative we prove that all solutions are radial and the linearized system is non-degenerate.

Isomonodromy aspects of the tt* equations of Cecotti and Vafa II. Riemann-Hilbert problem

In Part I (arXiv:1209.2045) we computed the Stokes data, though not the "connection matrix", for the smooth solutions of the tt*-Toda equations whose existence we established by p.d.e. methods. Here we give an alternative proof of the existence of some of these solutions by solving a Riemann-Hilbert problem. In the process, we compute the connection matrix for all smooth solutions, thus completing the computation of the monodromy data. We also give connection formulae relating the asymptotics at zero and infinity of all smooth solutions, clarifying the region of validity of the formulae established earlier by Tracy and Widom. Finally, for the tt*-Toda equations, we resolve some conjectures of Cecotti and Vafa concerning the positivity of S+S^t (where S is the Stokes matrix) and the unimodularity of the eigenvalues of the monodromy matrix.

We show that, for each $k\in\mathbb{N}$ there exists $\bb_k>0$ such that this system has at least $k$ sign-changing solutions (i.e., both two components change sign) and $k$ semi-nodal solutions (i.e., one component changes sign and the other one is positive) for each fixed $\bb\in (0, \bb_k)$.

On Liouville systems at critical parameters, Part 1: one bubble

In this paper we consider bubbling solutions to the general Liouville system: \label{abeq1} Δ_g u_i^k+\sum_{j=1}^n a_{ij}ρ_j^k(\frac{h_j e^{u_j^k}}{\int h_j e^{u_j^k}}-1)=0\quad\text{in}M, i=1,...,n (n\ge 2) where $(M,g)$ is a Riemann surface, and $A=(a_{ij})_{n\times n}$ is a constant non-negative matrix and $ρ_j^k\to ρ_j$ as $k\to \infty$. Among other things we prove the following sharp estimates. The location of the blowup point. The convergence rate of $ρ_j^k-ρ_j$, $j=1,..,n$. These results are of fundamental importance for constructing bubbling solutions. It is interesting to compare the difference between the general Liouville system and the SU(3) Toda system on estimates (1) and (2).

On the Entire Radial Solutions of the Chern-Simons SU(3) System

In this paper, we study the entire radial solutions of the self-dual equations arising from the relativistic SU(3) Chern-Simons model proposed by Kao-Lee and Dunne. Understanding the structure of entire radial solutions is one of fundamental issues for the system of nonlinear equations. In this paper, we prove any entire radial solutions must be one of topological, non-topological and mixed type solutions, and completely classify the asymptotic behaviors at infinity of these solutions. Even for radial solutions, this classification has remained an open problem for many years. As an application of this classification, we prove that the two components u and v have intersection at most finite times.

Segregated Vector Solutions for linearly coupled Nonlinear Schrödinger Systems

We consider the following system linearly coupled by nonlinear Schrödinger equations in $\R^3$ $$ \left\{\begin{array}{ll} -Δu_j+u_j=u^3_j-\va\sum\limits_{i\neq j}^N u_i,\{1cm}& x\in \R^3, \{0.2cm}\\ u_j\in H^1(\R^3),\quad j=1,\cdots,N, \end{array} \right. $$ where $\va\in\R$ is a coupling constant. This type of system arises in particular in models in nonlinear $N$-core fiber. We examine the effect of the linear coupling to the solution structure. When $N=2,3$, for any prescribed integer $\ell\ge 2$, we construct a non-radial vector solutions of segregated type, with two components having exactly $\ell$ positive bumps for $\va>0$ sufficiently small. We also give an explicit description on the characteristic features of the vector solutions.

Existence and uniqueness for Mean Field Equations on multiply connected domains at the critical parameter

We consider the mean field equation: (1) Δu+ρ\frac{e^u}{\int_Ωe^u}=0 & \hbox{in} \;Ω, u=0 & \hbox{on}\;\partialΩ, where $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^2$ is an open and bounded domain of class $C^1$. In his 1992 paper, Suzuki proved that if $Ω$ is a simply-connected domain, then equation (1) admits a unique solution for $ρ\in[0,8π)$. This result for $Ω$ a simply-connected domain has been extended to the case $ρ=8π$ by Chang, Chen and the second author. However, the uniqueness result for $Ω$ a multiply-connected domain has remained a long standing open problem which we solve positively here for $ρ\in[0,8π]$. To obtain this result we need a new version of the classical Bol's inequality suitable to be applied on multiply-connected domains. Our second main concern is the existence of solutions for (1) when $ρ=8π$. We a obtain necessary and sufficient condition for the solvability of the mean field equation at $ρ=8π$ which is expressed in terms of the Robin's function $γ$ for $Ω$. For example, if equation (1) has no solution at $ρ=8π$, then $γ$ has a unique nondegenerate maximum point. As a by product of our results we solve the long-standing open problem of the equivalence of canonical and microcanonical ensembles in the Onsager's statistical description of two-dimensional turbulence on multiply-connected domains.

Solutions to the Master Equations Governing Fractional Vortices

By means of variational methods, in this paper, we establish sharp existence results for solutions of the master equations governing `fractional multiple vortices.' In the doubly periodic situation, the conditions for existence are both necessary and sufficient and give the upper bounds for the vortex numbers in terms of the size of the periodic cell domain. In the planar situation, there is no restriction on the vortex numbers. In both situations, the solutions are uniquely determined by the prescribed locations and the local winding numbers of the vortices.

In this paper, we consider the following PDE involving two Sobolev-Hardy critical exponents, \label{0.1} {& Δu + λ\frac{u^{2^*(s_1)-1}}{|x|^{s_1}} + \frac{u^{2^*(s_2)-1}}{|x|^{s_2}} =0 \text{in} Ω, & u=0 \qquad \text{on} Ω, where $0 \le s_2 < s_1 \le 2$, $0 \ne λ\in \Bbb R$ and $0 \in \partial Ω$. The existence (or nonexistence) for least-energy solutions has been extensively studied when $s_1=0$ or $s_2=0$. In this paper, we prove that if $0< s_2 < s_1 <2$ and the mean curvature of $\partial Ω$ at 0 $H(0)<0$, then \eqref{0.1} has a least-energy solution. Therefore, this paper has completed the study of \eqref{0.1} for the least-energy solutions. We also prove existence or nonexistence of positive entire solutions of \eqref{0.1} with $Ω=\rn$ under different situations of $s_1, s_2$ and $λ$.

Classification and nondegeneracy of $SU(n+1)$ Toda system with singular sources

We consider the following Toda system Δu_i + \D \sum_{j = 1}^n a_{ij}e^{u_j} = 4πγ_{i}δ_{0} \text{in}\mathbb R^2, \int_{\mathbb R^2}e^{u_i} dx < \infty, \forall 1\leq i \leq n, where $γ_{i} > -1$, $δ_0$ is Dirac measure at 0, and the coefficients $a_{ij}$ form the standard tri-diagonal Cartan matrix. In this paper, (i) we completely classify the solutions and obtain the quantization result: $$\sum_{j=1}^n a_{ij}\int_{\R^2}e^{u_j} dx = 4π(2+γ_i+γ_{n+1-i}), \;\;\forall\; 1\leq i \leq n.$$ This generalizes the classification result by Jost and Wang for $γ_i=0$, $\forall \;1\leq i\leq n$. (ii) We prove that if $γ_i+γ_{i+1}+...+γ_j \notin \mathbb Z$ for all $1\leq i\leq j\leq n$, then any solution $u_i$ is \textit{radially symmetric} w.r.t. 0. (iii) We prove that the linearized equation at any solution is \textit{non-degenerate}. These are fundamental results in order to understand the bubbling behavior of the Toda system.

Tropical Atmospheric Circulations with Humidity Effects

The main objective of this article is to study the effect of the moisture on the planetary scale atmospheric circulation over the tropics. The modeling we adopt is the Boussinesq equations coupled with a diffusive equation of humidity and the humidity dependent heat source is modeled by a linear approximation of the humidity. The rigorous mathematical analysis is carried out using the dynamic transition theory. In particular, we obtain the same types of transitions and hence the scenario of the El Niño mechanism as described in \cite{MW2,MW3}. The effect of the moisture only lowers slightly the magnitude of the critical thermal Rayleigh number.

A Topological Degree Counting for some Liouville Systems of Mean Field Equations

Let $A=(a_{ij})_{n\times n}$ be an invertible matrix and $A^{-1}=(a^{ij})_{n\times n}$ be the inverse of $A$. In this paper, we consider the generalized Liouville system: \label{abeq1} Δ_g u_i+\sum_{j=1}^n a_{ij}ρ_j(\frac{h_j e^{u_j}}{\int h_j e^{u_j}}-1)=0\quad\text{in \,}M, where $0< h_j\in C^1(M)$ and $ρ_j\in \mathbb R^+$, and prove that, under the assumptions of $(H_1)$ and $(H_2)$\,(see Introduction), the Leray-Schauder degree of \eqref{abeq1} is equal to \frac{(-χ(M)+1)... (-χ(M)+N)}{N!} if $ρ=(ρ_1,..., ρ_n)$ satisfies 8πN\sum_{i=1}^nρ_i<\sum_{1\leq i,j\leq n}a_{ij}ρ_iρ_j<8π(N+1)\sum_{i=1}^nρ_i. Equation \eqref{abeq1} is a natural generalization of the classic Liouville equation and is the Euler-Lagrangian equation of Nonlinear function $\varPhi_ρ$: \varPhi_ρ(u)=1/2\int_M\sum_{1\leq i,j\leq n}a^{ij}\nabla_g u_i\cdot \nabla_g u_j+\sum_{i=1}^n\int_Mρ_iu_i -\sum_{i=1}^nρ_i\log \int_M h_i e^{u_i}. The Liouville system \eqref{abeq1} has arisen in many different research areas in mathematics and physics. Our counting formulas are the first result in degree theory for Liouville systems.

Nonlinear PDE aspects of the tt* equations of Cecotti and Vafa

Using nonlinear pde techniques, we construct a new family of globally smooth tt* structures. This includes tt* structures associated to the (orbifold) quantum cohomology of a finite number of complex projective spaces and weighted projective spaces. The existence of such "magical solutions" of the tt* equations, namely smooth solutions characterized by asymptotic boundary conditions, was predicted by Cecotti and Vafa. In our situation, the tt* equations belong to a class of equations which we call the tt*-Toda lattice. Solutions of the tt*-Toda lattice are harmonic maps which have dual interpretations as Frobenius structures or variations of (semi-infinite) Hodge structures.

On the Best Constant in the Moser-Onofri-Aubin Inequality

Let $S^2$ be the 2-dimensional unit sphere and let $J_α$ denote the nonlinear functional on the Sobolev space $H^{1,2}(S^2)$ defined by $$ J_α(u) = \fracα{4}\int_{S^2}|\nabla u|^2 dω+ \int_{S^2} u dω-\ln \int_{S^2} e^{u} dω, $$ where $dω$ denotes Lebesgue measure on $S^2$, normalized so that $\int_{S^2} dω= 1$. Onofri had established that $J_α$ is non-negative on $H^1(S^2)$ provided $α\geq 1$. In this note, we show that if $J_α$ is restricted to those $u\in H^1(S^2)$ that satisfy the Aubin condition: \int_{S^2}e^u x_j dw=0\quad\text{for all}1\leq j\leq 3, then the same inequality continues to hold (i.e., $J_α(u)\geq0$) whenever $α\geq {2/3}-ε_0$ for some $ε_0>0$. The question of Chang-Yang on whether this remains true for all $α\geq {1/2}$ remains open.

Profile of bubbling solutions to a Liouville system

In several fields of Physics, Chemistry and Ecology, some models are described by Liouville systems. In this article we first prove a uniqueness result for a Liouville system in $\mathbb R^2$. Then we establish an uniform estimate for bubbling solutions of a locally defined Liouville system near an isolated blowup point. The uniqueness result, as well as the local uniform estimates are crucial ingredients for obtaining a priori estimate, degree counting formulas and existence results for Liouville systems defined on Riemann surfaces.

Elliptic functions, Green functions and the mean field equations on tori

We show that the Green functions on flat tori can have either 3 or 5 critical points only. There does not seemto be any directmethod to attack this problem. Instead, we have to employ sophisticated non-linear partial differential equations to study it. We also study the distribution of number of critical points over the moduli space of flat tori through deformations. The functional equations of special theta values provide important inequalities which lead to a solution for all rhombus tori.
