3D Interconnected Magnetic Nanowire Networks as Potential Integrated Multistate Memristors

Interconnected magnetic nanowire (NW) networks offer a promising platform for 3-dimensional (3D) information storage and integrated neuromorphic computing. Here we report discrete propagation of magnetic states in interconnected Co nanowire networks driven by magnetic field and current, manifested in distinct magnetoresistance (MR) features. In these networks, when only a few interconnected NWs were measured, multiple MR kinks and local minima were observed, including a significant minimum at a positive field during the descending field sweep. Micromagnetic simulations showed that this unusual feature was due to domain wall (DW) pinning at the NW intersections, which was confirmed by off-axis electron holography imaging. In a complex network with many intersections, sequential switching of nanowire sections separated by interconnects was observed, along with stochastic characteristics. The pinning/depinning of the DWs can be further controlled by the driving current density. These results illustrate the promise of such interconnected networks as integrated multistate memristors.

Learning Neural Hamiltonian Dynamics: A Methodological Overview

The past few years have witnessed an increased interest in learning Hamiltonian dynamics in deep learning frameworks. As an inductive bias based on physical laws, Hamiltonian dynamics endow neural networks with accurate long-term prediction, interpretability, and data-efficient learning. However, Hamiltonian dynamics also bring energy conservation or dissipation assumptions on the input data and additional computational overhead. In this paper, we systematically survey recently proposed Hamiltonian neural network models, with a special emphasis on methodologies. In general, we discuss the major contributions of these models, and compare them in four overlapping directions: 1) generalized Hamiltonian system; 2) symplectic integration, 3) generalized input form, and 4) extended problem settings. We also provide an outlook of the fundamental challenges and emerging opportunities in this area.

A necessary and sufficient condition for the Darboux-Treibich-Verdier potential with its spectrum contained in $\mathbb{R}$

In this paper, we study the spectrum of the complex Hill operator $L=\frac{d^2}{dx^2}+q(x;τ)$ in $L^2(\mathbb{R},\mathbb{C})$ with the Darboux-Treibich-Verdier potential \[q(x;τ):=-\sum_{k=0}^{3}n_{k}(n_{k}+1)\wp \left( x+z_0+\tfrac{ω_{k}}{2};τ\right),\] where $n_k\in\mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}$ with $\max n_k\geq 1$ and $z_0\in\mathbb{C}$ is chosen such that $q(x;τ)$ has no singularities on $\mathbb{R}$. For any fixed $τ\in i\mathbb{R}_{>0}$, we give a necessary and sufficient condition on $(n_0,n_1,n_2,n_3)$ to guarantee that the spectrum $σ(L)$ is \[σ(L)=(-\infty, E_{2g}]\cup[E_{2g-1}, E_{2g-2}]\cup \cdots \cup[E_{1}, E_{0}],\quad E_j\in \mathbb{R},\] and hence generalizes Ince's remarkable result in 1940 for the Lamé potential to the Darboux-Treibich-Verdier potential. We also determine the number of (anti)periodic eigenvalues in each bounded interval $(E_{2j-1}$, $E_{2j-2})$, which generalizes the recent result in \cite{HHV} where the Lamé case $n_1=n_2=n_3=0$ was studied.

Optimizing AD Pruning of Sponsored Search with Reinforcement Learning

Industrial sponsored search system (SSS) can be logically divided into three modules: keywords matching, ad retrieving, and ranking. During ad retrieving, the ad candidates grow exponentially. A query with high commercial value might retrieve a great deal of ad candidates such that the ranking module could not afford. Due to limited latency and computing resources, the candidates have to be pruned earlier. Suppose we set a pruning line to cut SSS into two parts: upstream and downstream. The problem we are going to address is: how to pick out the best $K$ items from $N$ candidates provided by the upstream to maximize the total system's revenue. Since the industrial downstream is very complicated and updated quickly, a crucial restriction in this problem is that the selection scheme should get adapted to the downstream. In this paper, we propose a novel model-free reinforcement learning approach to fixing this problem. Our approach considers downstream as a black-box environment, and the agent sequentially selects items and finally feeds into the downstream, where revenue would be estimated and used as a reward to improve the selection policy. To the best of our knowledge, this is first time to consider the system optimization from a downstream adaption view. It is also the first time to use reinforcement learning techniques to tackle this problem. The idea has been successfully realized in Baidu's sponsored search system, and online long time A/B test shows remarkable improvements on revenue.

The geometry of generalized Lame equation, III: One-to-one of the Riemann-Hilbert correspondence

In this paper, the third in a series, we continue to study the generalized Lamé equation H$(n_0,n_1,n_2,n_3;B)$ with the Darboux-Treibich-Verdier potential \begin{equation*} y^{\prime \prime }(z)=\bigg[ \sum_{k=0}^{3}n_{k}(n_{k}+1)\wp(z+\tfrac{ ω_{k}}{2}|τ)+B\bigg] y(z),\quad n_{k}\in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq0} \end{equation*} and a related linear ODE with additional singularities $\pm p$ from the monodromy aspect. We establish the uniqueness of these ODEs with respect to the global monodromy data. Surprisingly, our result shows that the Riemann-Hilbert correspondence from the set \[\{\text{H}(n_0,n_1,n_2,n_3;B)|B\in\mathbb{C}\}\cup \{\text{H}(n_0+2,n_1,n_2,n_3;B) | B\in\mathbb{C}\}\] to the set of group representations $ρ:π_1(E_τ)\to SL(2,\mathbb{C})$ is one-to-one. We emphasize that this result is not trivial at all. There is an example that for $τ=\frac12+i\frac{\sqrt{3}}{2}$, there are $B_1,B_2$ such that the monodromy representations of H$(1,0,0,0;B_1)$ and H$(4,0,0,0;B_2)$ are {\bf the same}, namely the Riemann-Hilbert correspondence from the set \[\{\text{H}(n_0,n_1,n_2,n_3;B)|B\in\mathbb{C}\}\cup \{\text{H}(n_0+3,n_1,n_2,n_3;B) | B\in\mathbb{C}\}\] to the set of group representations is {\bf not} necessarily one-to-one. This example shows that our result is completely different from the classical one concerning linear ODEs defined on $\mathbb{CP}^1$ with finite singularities.

Current Distribution on Capacitive Electrode-Electrolyte Interfaces

The distribution of electric current on an electrode surface in electrolyte varies with time due to charge accumulation at a capacitive interface, as well as due to electrode kinetics and concentration polarization in the medium. Initially, the potential at the electrode-electrolyte interface is uniform, resulting in a non-uniform current distribution due to the uneven ohmic drop of the potential in the medium. Over time, however, the non-uniform current density causes spatially varying rate of the charge accumulation at the interface, breaking down its equipotentiality. We developed an analytical model to describe such transition at a capacitive interface when the current is below the mass-transfer limitation, and demonstrated that the steady distribution of the current is achieved when the current density is proportional to the capacitance per unit area, which leads to linear voltage ramp at the electrode. More specific results regarding the dynamics of this transition are provided for a disk electrode, along with an experimental validation of the theoretical result. These findings are important for many electrochemical applications, and in particular, for proper design of the electro-neural interfaces.

Proactive Caching for Energy-Efficiency in Wireless Networks: A Markov Decision Process Approach

Content caching in wireless networks provides a substantial opportunity to trade off low cost memory storage with energy consumption, yet finding the optimal causal policy with low computational complexity remains a challenge. This paper models the Joint Pushing and Caching (JPC) problem as a Markov Decision Process (MDP) and provides a solution to determine the optimal randomized policy. A novel approach to decouple the influence from buffer occupancy and user requests is proposed to turn the high-dimensional optimization problem into three low-dimensional ones. Furthermore, a non-iterative algorithm to solve one of the sub-problems is presented, exploiting a structural property we found as \textit{generalized monotonicity}, and hence significantly reduces the computational complexity. The result attains close performance in comparison with theoretical bounds from non-practical policies, while benefiting from higher time efficiency than the unadapted MDP solution.

Hamiltonian system for the elliptic form of Painlevé VI equation

In literature, it is known that any solution of Painlevé VI equation governs the isomonodromic deformation of a second order linear Fuchsian ODE on $\mathbb{CP}^{1}$. In this paper, we extend this isomonodromy theory on $\mathbb{CP}^{1}$ to the moduli space of elliptic curves by studying the isomonodromic deformation of the generalized Lamé equation. Among other things, we prove that the isomonodromic equation is a new Hamiltonian system, which is equivalent to the elliptic form of Painlevé VI equation for generic parameters. For Painlevé VI equation with some special parameters, the isomonodromy theory of the generalized Lamé equation greatly simplifies the computation of the monodromy group in $\mathbb{CP}^{1}$. This is one of the advantages of the elliptic form.

Existence and symmetry of positive ground states for a doubly critical Schrodinger system

We study the following doubly critical Schrödinger system $$-Δu -\frac{\la_1}{|x|^2}u=u^{2^\ast-1}+ ν\al u^{\al-1}v^\bb, \quad x\in \RN, -Δv -\frac{\la_2}{|x|^2}v=v^{2^\ast-1} + ν\bb u^{\al}v^{\bb-1}, \quad x\in \RN, u, v\in D^{1, 2}(\RN),\quad u, v>0 in $\RN\setminus{0}$},$$ where $N\ge 3$, $\la_1, \la_2\in (0, \frac{(N-2)^2}{4})$, $2^\ast=\frac{2N}{N-2}$ and $\al>1, \bb>1$ satisfying $\al+\bb=2^\ast$. This problem is related to coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations with critical exponent for Bose-Einstein condensate. For different ranges of $N$, $\al$, $\bb$ and $ν>0$, we obtain positive ground state solutions via some quite different methods, which are all radially symmetric. It turns out that the least energy level depends heavily on the relations among $\al, \bb$ and 2. Besides, for sufficiently small $ν>0$, positive solutions are also obtained via a variational perturbation approach. Note that the Palais-Smale condition can not hold for any positive energy level, which makes the study via variational methods rather complicated.

Infinitely many sign-changing and semi-nodal solutions for a nonlinear Schrodinger system

We study the following coupled Schrödinger equations which have appeared as several models from mathematical physics: {displaymath} {cases}-Δu_1 +\la_1 u_1 = μ_1 u_1^3+βu_1 u_2^2, \quad x\in Ω, -Δu_2 +\la_2 u_2 =μ_2 u_2^3+βu_1^2 u_2, \quad x\in \Om, u_1=u_2=0 \,\,\,\hbox{on \,$\partial\Om$}.{cases}{displaymath} Here $\Om$ is a smooth bounded domain in $\R^N (N=2, 3)$ or $\Om=\RN$, $\la_1,\, \la_2$, $μ_1,\,μ_2$ are all positive constants and the coupling constant $\bb<0$. We show that this system has infinitely many sign-changing solutions. We also obtain infinitely many semi-nodal solutions in the following sense: one component changes sign and the other one is positive. The crucial idea of our proof, which has never been used for this system before, is turning to study a new problem with two constraints. Finally, when $\Om$ is a bounded domain, we show that this system has a least energy sign-changing solution, both two components of which have exactly two nodal domains, and we also study the asymptotic behavior of solutions as $β\to -\infty$ and phase separation is expected.

Removable singularity of positive solutions for a critical elliptic system with isolated singularity

We study qualitative properties of positive singular solutions to a two-coupled elliptic system with critical exponents. This system is related to coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations with critical exponents for nonlinear optics and Bose-Einstein condensates. We prove a sharp result on the removability of the same isolated singularity for both two components of the solutions. We also prove the nonexistence of positive solutions with one component bounded near the singularity and the other component unbounded near the singularity. These results will be applied in a subsequent work where the same system in a punctured ball will be studied.

Standing waves for coupled nonlinear Schrodinger equations with decaying potentials

We study the following singularly perturbed problem for a coupled nonlinear Schrödinger system: {displaymath} {cases}-\e^2Δu +a(x) u = μ_1 u^3+βuv^2, \quad x\in \R^3, -\e^2Δv +b(x) v =μ_2 v^3+βvu^2, \quad x\in \R^3, u> 0, v> 0 \,\,\hbox{in $\R^3$}, u(x), v(x)\to 0 \,\,\hbox{as $|x|\to \iy$}.{cases}{displaymath} Here, $a, b$ are nonnegative continuous potentials, and $μ_1,μ_2>0$. We consider the case where the coupling constant $β>0$ is relatively large. Then for sufficiently small $\e>0$, we obtain positive solutions of this system which concentrate around local minima of the potentials as $\e\to 0$. The novelty is that the potentials $a$ and $b$ may vanish at someplace and decay to 0 at infinity.

Multiple sign-changing and semi-nodal solutions for coupled Schrodinger equations

We study the following coupled Schrödinger equations which have appeared as several models from mathematical physics: \begin{displaymath} \begin{cases}-Δu_1 +\la_1 u_1 = μ_1 u_1^3+βu_1 u_2^2, \quad x\in Ω,\\ -Δu_2 +\la_2 u_2 =μ_2 u_2^3+βu_1^2 u_2, \quad x\in \Om,\\ u_1=u_2=0 \,\,\,\hbox{on \,$\partial\Om$}.\end{cases}\end{displaymath} Here $\Om\subset\RN (N=2, 3)$ is a smooth bounded domain, $\la_1, \la_2$, $μ_1, μ_2$ are all positive constants. We show that, for each $k\in\mathbb{N}$ there exists $\bb_k>0$ such that this system has at least $k$ sign-changing solutions (i.e., both two components change sign) and $k$ semi-nodal solutions (i.e., one component changes sign and the other one is positive) for each fixed $\bb\in (0, \bb_k)$.

Positive Least Energy Solutions and Phase Separation for Coupled Schrodinger Equations with Critical Exponent: Higher Dimensional Case

We study the following nonlinear Schrödinger system which is related to Bose-Einstein condensate: {displaymath} {cases}-Δu +\la_1 u = μ_1 u^{2^\ast-1}+βu^{\frac{2^\ast}{2}-1}v^{\frac{2^\ast}{2}}, \quad x\in Ω, -Δv +\la_2 v =μ_2 v^{2^\ast-1}+βv^{\frac{2^\ast}{2}-1} u^{\frac{2^\ast}{2}}, \quad x\in \om, u\ge 0, v\ge 0 \,\,\hbox{in $\om$},\quad u=v=0 \,\,\hbox{on $\partial\om$}.{cases}{displaymath} Here $\om\subset \R^N$ is a smooth bounded domain, $2^\ast:=\frac{2N}{N-2}$ is the Sobolev critical exponent, $-\la_1(\om)<\la_1,\la_2<0$, $μ_1,μ_2>0$ and $β\neq 0$, where $λ_1(\om)$ is the first eigenvalue of $-Δ$ with the Dirichlet boundary condition. When $\bb=0$, this is just the well-known Brezis-Nirenberg problem. The special case N=4 was studied by the authors in (Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 205: 515-551, 2012). In this paper we consider {\it the higher dimensional case $N\ge 5$}. It is interesting that we can prove the existence of a positive least energy solution $(u_\bb, v_\bb)$ {\it for any $β\neq 0$} (which can not hold in the special case N=4). We also study the limit behavior of $(u_\bb, v_\bb)$ as $β\to -\infty$ and phase separation is expected. In particular, $u_\bb-v_\bb$ will converge to {\it sign-changing solutions} of the Brezis-Nirenberg problem, provided $N\ge 6$. In case $\la_1=\la_2$, the classification of the least energy solutions is also studied. It turns out that some quite different phenomena appear comparing to the special case N=4.

Standing Waves for nonlinear Schrodinger Equations involving critical growth

We consider the following singularly perturbed nonlinear elliptic problem: $$-\e^2Δu+V(x)u=f(u),\ u\in H^1(\mathbb{R^N}),$$ where $N\ge 3$ and the nonlinearity $f$ is of critical growth. In this paper, we construct a solution $u_\e$ of the above problem which concentrates at an isolated component of positive local minimum points of $V$ as $\e\to 0$ under certain conditions on $f$. Our result completes the study made in some very recent works in the sense that, in those papers only the subcritical growth was considered
