Three-dimensional imaging of hadrons with hard exclusive reactions: advances in experiment, theory, phenomenology, and lattice QCD

Generalized Parton Distributions (GPDs) have emerged as a powerful framework for exploring the internal structure of hadrons in terms of their partonic constituents. Over the past three decades, the field has witnessed significant theoretical and experimental advancements. The interpretation of GPDs in impact parameter space offers a vivid three-dimensional visualization of hadron structure, correlating longitudinal momentum and transverse spatial distributions, thereby enabling tomographic imaging of hadrons. Furthermore, the link between GPDs and the matrix elements of the QCD energy-momentum tensor provides access to fundamental properties of hadrons, including spin decomposition and internal pressure distributions. Notably, recent analyses of Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) data have enabled the empirical extraction of the quark pressure profile inside the proton. This white paper presents an overview of recent developments in GPD theory and phenomenology, as well as progress in lattice QCD studies. It outlines the prospects for advancing our understanding of hadron structure through the next generation of dedicated experiments, including the extension of the Jefferson Lab 12~GeV program (and its potential 22~GeV upgrade), J-PARC, COMPASS/AMBER, LHC ultra-peripheral collisions, and the future electron-ion colliders EIC and EicC.

Exclusive J/ψψ Detection and Physics with ECCE

Exclusive heavy quarkonium photoproduction is one of the most popular processes in EIC, which has a large cross section and a simple final state. Due to the gluonic nature of the exchange Pomeron, this process can be related to the gluon distributions in the nucleus. The momentum transfer dependence of this process is sensitive to the interaction sites, which provides a powerful tool to probe the spatial distribution of gluons in the nucleus. Recently the problem of the origin of hadron mass has received lots of attention in determining the anomaly contribution MaM_{a}. The trace anomaly is sensitive to the gluon condensate, and exclusive production of quarkonia such as J/ψψ and ΥΥ can serve as a sensitive probe to constrain it. In this paper, we present the performance of the ECCE detector for exclusive J/ψψ detection and the capability of this process to investigate the above physics opportunities with ECCE.

Azimuthal single- and double-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic lepton scattering by transversely polarized protons

A comprehensive set of azimuthal single-spin and double-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive leptoproduction of pions, charged kaons, protons, and antiprotons from transversely polarized protons is presented. These asymmetries include the previously published HERMES results on Collins and Sivers asymmetries, the analysis of which has been extended to include protons and antiprotons and also to an extraction in a three-dimensional kinematic binning and enlarged phase space. They are complemented by corresponding results for the remaining four single-spin and four double-spin asymmetries allowed in the one-photon-exchange approximation of the semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering process for target-polarization orientation perpendicular to the direction of the incoming lepton beam. Among those results, significant non-vanishing cos⁡ϕ−ϕS\cos{ϕ-ϕ_S} modulations provide evidence for a sizable worm-gear (II) distribution, g1Tg_{1T}. Most of the other modulations are found to be consistent with zero with the notable exception of large sin⁡ϕS\sin{ϕ_S} modulations for charged pions and positive kaons.

Measurement of two-particle correlations in hadronic e+e−e^{+}e^{-} collisions at Belle

The enhancement of charged-particle pairs with large pseudorapidity difference and small azimuthal angle difference, often referred to as the ``ridge signal'', is a phenomenon widely observed in high multiplicity proton-proton, proton-ion and deutron-ion collisions, which is not yet fully understood. In heavy-ion collisions, the hydrodynamic expansion of the Quark-Gluon Plasma is one of the possible explanations of the origin of the ridge signal. Measurements in the e+e−e^+e^- collision system, without the complexities introduced by hadron structure in the initial state, can serve as a complementary probe to examine the formation of a ridge signal. The first measurement of two-particle angular correlation functions in high multiplicity e+e−e^+e^- collisions at s=10.52\sqrt{s}=10.52 GeV is reported. The hadronic e+e−e^+e^- annihilation data collected by the Belle detector at KEKB are used in this study. Two-particle angular correlation functions are measured over the full azimuth and large pseudorapidity intervals which are defined by either the electron beam axis or the event thrust as a function of charged particle multiplicity. The measurement in the event thrust analysis, with mostly outgoing quark pairs determining the reference axis, is sensitive to the region of additional soft gluon emissions. No significant ridge signal is observed with either coordinates analyses. Near side jet correlations appear to be absent in the thrust axis analysis. The measurements are compared to predictions from various event generators and expected to provide new constraints to the phenomenological models in the low energy regime.

Search for the Decay Bs0→η′ηB_s^0 \rightarrow η^\prime η

In the Standard Model (SM) charmless hadronic decays Bs0→η′ηB_s^0 \rightarrow η^\prime η proceed via tree-level b→ub\to u and penguin b→sb\to s transitions. Penguin transitions are sensitive to Beyond-the-Standard-Model (BSM) physics scenarios and could affect the branching fractions and {\it CP} asymmetries in such decays. Once branching fractions for two-body decays Bs→ηη,ηη′,η′η′B_s \to ηη, ηη^{\prime}, η^{\prime}η^{\prime} are measured, and the theoretical uncertainties are reduced, it would be possible to extract {\it CP} violating parameters from the data using the formalism based on SU(3)/U(3) symmetry. To achieve this goal, at least four of these six branching fractions need to be measured. Only the branching fraction for Bs0→η′η′B_s^0 \to η^{\prime}η^{\prime} has been measured so far.

Angular analysis of B0→K∗(892)0ℓ+ℓ−B^0 \to K^\ast(892)^0 \ell^+ \ell^-

We present a measurement of angular observables, P4′P_4', P5′P_5', P6′P_6', P8′P_8', in the decay B0→K∗(892)0ℓ+ℓ−B^0 \to K^\ast(892)^0 \ell^+ \ell^-, where ℓ+ℓ−\ell^+\ell^- is either e+e−e^+e^- or μ+μ−μ^+μ^-. The analysis is performed on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 711 fb−1711~\mathrm{fb}^{-1} containing 772×106772\times 10^{6} BBˉB\bar B pairs, collected at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+e^- collider KEKB. Four angular observables, P4,5,6,8′P_{4,5,6,8}' are extracted in five bins of the invariant mass squared of the lepton system, q2q^2. We compare our results for P4,5,6,8′P_{4,5,6,8}' with Standard Model predictions including the q2q^2 region in which the LHCb collaboration reported the so-called P5′P_5' anomaly.

Energy scan of the e+e−→hb(nP)π+π−e^+e^- \to h_b(nP)π^+π^- (n=1,2)(n=1,2) cross sections and evidence for Υ(11020)Υ(11020) decays into charged bottomonium-like states

Using data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+e^- collider, we measure the energy dependence of the e+e−→hb(nP)π+π−e^+e^- \to h_b(nP)π^+π^- (n=1,2)(n=1,2) cross sections from thresholds up to 11.02 11.02\,GeV. We find clear Υ(10860)Υ(10860) and Υ(11020)Υ(11020) peaks with little or no continuum contribution. We study the resonant substructure of the Υ(11020)→hb(nP)π+π−Υ(11020) \to h_b(nP)π^+π^- transitions and find evidence that they proceed entirely via the intermediate isovector states Zb(10610)Z_b(10610) and Zb(10650)Z_b(10650). The relative fraction of these states is loosely constrained by the current data: the hypothesis that only Zb(10610)Z_b(10610) is produced is excluded at the level of 3.3 standard deviations, while the hypothesis that only Zb(10650)Z_b(10650) is produced is not excluded at a significant level.

Evidence for the decay B0→ηηB^{0}\to ηη

We report a search for B0→ηηB^{0}\to ηη with a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 698 fb−1698 \,{\rm fb}^{-1} containing 753×106753 \times 10^{6} BBˉB\bar{B} pairs collected at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^{+}e^{-} collider. The branching fraction is measured to be B(B0→ηη)=(7.6−2.3−1.6+2.7+1.4)×10−7\mathcal{B}(B^{0} \to ηη) = (7.6^{+2.7 +1.4}_{-2.3 -1.6}) \times 10^{-7} at the level of 3.3 standard deviations above zero, which provides the first evidence for the decay B0→ηηB^{0} \to ηη.

First observation of γγ→ppˉK+K−γγ\to p \bar{p} K^+ K^- and search for exotic baryons in pKpK systems

The process γγ→ppˉK+K−γγ\to p \bar{p} K^+ K^- and its intermediate processes are measured for the first time using a 980~fb−1^{-1} data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+e^- collider. The production of ppˉK+K−p \bar{p} K^+ K^- and a Λ(1520)0 (Λˉ(1520)0)Λ(1520)^0~(\barΛ(1520)^0) signal in the pK−pK^-~(pˉK+\bar{p} K^+) invariant mass spectrum are clearly observed. However, no evidence for an exotic baryon near 1540~MeV/c2c^2, denoted as Θ(1540)0Θ(1540)^0~(Θˉ (1540)0\barΘ~(1540)^0) or Θ(1540)++Θ(1540)^{++}~(Θ(1540)−−Θ(1540)^{--}), is seen in the pK−p K^-~(pˉK+\bar{p}K^+) or pK+pK^+~(pˉK−\bar{p} K^-) invariant mass spectra. Cross sections for γγ→ppˉK+K−γγ\to p \bar{p} K^+ K^-, Λ(1520)0pˉK++c.c.Λ(1520)^0 \bar{p} K^+ +c.c. and the products $σ(γγ\to Θ(1540)^0 \bar{p} K^+ +c.c.)\BR(Θ(1540)^0 \to p K^{-})$ and $σ(γγ\to Θ(1540)^{++} \bar{p} K^- +c.c.)\BR(Θ(1540)^{++}\to p K^{+})$ are measured. We also determine upper limits on the products of the χc0χ_{c0} and χc2χ_{c2} two-photon decay widths and their branching fractions to ppˉK+K−p \bar{p} K^+ K^- at the 90\% credibility level.

Inclusive and exclusive measurements of BB decays to χc1χ_{c1} and χc2χ_{c2} at Belle

We report inclusive and exclusive measurements for χc1χ_{c1} and χc2χ_{c2} production in BB decays. We measure B(B→χc1X)\mathcal{B}(B \to χ_{c1} X)= $(3.03 \pm 0.05(\mbox{stat}) \pm 0.24(\mbox{syst})) \times 10^{-3}$ and B(B→χc2X)\mathcal{B}(B \to χ_{c2} X)= $(0.70 \pm 0.06(\mbox{stat}) \pm 0.10(\mbox{syst})) \times 10^{-3}$. For the first time, χc2χ_{c2} production in exclusive BB decays in the modes B0→χc2π−K+B^0 \to χ_{c2}π^- K^+ and B+→χc2π+π−K+B^+ \to χ_{c2} π^+ π^- K^+ has been observed, along with first evidence for the B+→χc2π+KS0B^+ \to χ_{c2} π^+ K_S^0 decay mode. For χc1χ_{c1} production, we report the first observation in the B+→χc1π+π−K+B^+ \to χ_{c1} π^+ π^- K^+, B0→χc1π+π−KS0B^0 \to χ_{c1} π^+ π^- K_S^0 and B0→χc1π0π−K+B^0 \to χ_{c1} π^0 π^- K^+ decay modes. Using these decay modes, we observe a difference in the production mechanism of χc2χ_{c2} in comparison to χc1χ_{c1} in BB decays. In addition, we report searches for X(3872)X(3872) and χc1(2P)χ_{c1}(2P) in the B+→(χc1π+π−)K+B^+ \to (χ_{c1} π^+ π^-) K^+ decay mode. The reported results use 772×106772 \times 10^{6} BB‾B\overline{B} events collected at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+e^- collider.

Measurement of CPCP asymmetry in the D0→KS0KS0D^{0} \to K^0_S K^0_S decay at Belle

We report a measurement of the time-integrated CPCP asymmetry in the neutral charm meson decay D0→KS0KS0D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S using 921~fb−1^{-1} data collected at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) and Υ(5S)Υ(5S) resonances with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+e^- collider. The observed asymmetry is ACP(D0→KS0KS0)=(−0.02±1.53±0.17)%, A_{CP}(D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S) = (-0.02 \pm 1.53 \pm 0.17) \%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This latter uncertainty is dominated by the error of the normalisation channel. The result is consistent with Standard Model expectations and improves the uncertainty with respect to previous measurement of this quantity by more than a factor of three.

Measurement of e+e−→π+π−ψ(2S)e^+e^- \to π^+π^-ψ(2S) via Initial State Radiation at Belle

We report measurement of the cross section of e+e−→π+π−ψ(2S)e^+e^-\to π^+π^-ψ(2S) between 4.0 and 5.5GeV5.5 {\rm GeV}, based on an analysis of initial state radiation events in a 980fb−1980 \rm fb^{-1} data sample recorded with the Belle detector. The properties of the Y(4360)Y(4360) and Y(4660)Y(4660) states are determined. Fitting the mass spectrum of π+π−ψ(2S)π^+π^-ψ(2S) with two coherent Breit-Wigner functions, we find two solutions with identical mass and width but different couplings to electron-positron pairs: MY(4360)=(4347±6±3)MeV/c2M_{Y(4360)} = (4347\pm 6\pm 3) {\rm MeV}/c^2, ΓY(4360)=(103±9±5)MeVΓ_{Y(4360)} = (103\pm 9\pm 5) {\rm MeV}, MY(4660)=(4652±10±8)MeV/c2M_{Y(4660)} = (4652\pm10\pm 8) {\rm MeV}/c^2, ΓY(4660)=(68±11±1)MeVΓ_{Y(4660)} = (68\pm 11\pm 1) \rm MeV; and B[Y(4360)→π+π−ψ(2S)]⋅ΓY(4360)e+e−=(10.9±0.6±0.7)eV{\cal{B}}[Y(4360)\to π^+π^-ψ(2S)]\cdot Γ_{Y(4360)}^{e^+e^-} = (10.9\pm 0.6\pm 0.7) \rm eV and B[Y(4660)→π+π−ψ(2S)]⋅ΓY(4660)e+e−=(8.1±1.1±0.5)eV{\cal{B}}[Y(4660)\to π^+π^-ψ(2S)]\cdot Γ_{Y(4660)}^{e^+e^-} = (8.1\pm 1.1\pm 0.5) \rm eV for one solution; or B[Y(4360)→π+π−ψ(2S)]⋅ΓY(4360)e+e−=(9.2±0.6±0.6)eV{\cal{B}}[Y(4360)\to π^+π^-ψ(2S)]\cdot Γ_{Y(4360)}^{e^+e^-} = (9.2\pm 0.6\pm 0.6) \rm eV and B[Y(4660)→π+π−ψ(2S)]⋅ΓY(4660)e+e−=(2.0±0.3±0.2)eV{\cal{B}}[Y(4660)\to π^+π^-ψ(2S)]\cdot Γ_{Y(4660)}^{e^+e^-} = (2.0\pm 0.3\pm 0.2) \rm eV for the other. Here, the first errors are statistical and the second systematic. Evidence for a charged charmoniumlike structure at 4.05GeV/c24.05 {\rm GeV}/c^2 is observed in the π±ψ(2S)π^{\pm}ψ(2S) intermediate state in the Y(4360)Y(4360) decays.

Measurement of the decay B→DℓνℓB\to D\ellν_\ell in fully reconstructed events and determination of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element ∣Vcb∣|V_{cb}|

The isospin-averaged branching fraction of the decay B→DℓνℓB\to D\ellν_\ell is found to be B(B0→D−ℓ+νℓ)=(2.31±0.03(stat)±0.11(syst))%\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to D^- \ell^+ ν_{\ell})=(2.31\pm 0.03(\mathrm{stat})\pm 0.11(\mathrm{syst}))\%. Analyzing the differential decay rate as a function of the hadronic recoil with the parameterization of Caprini, Lelouch and Neubert and using the form-factor prediction G(1)=1.0541±0.0083\mathcal{G}(1)=1.0541\pm 0.0083 calculated by FNAL/MILC, we obtain ηEW∣Vcb∣=(40.12±1.34)×10−3η_\mathrm{EW}|V_{cb}|=(40.12\pm 1.34)\times 10^{-3}, where ηEWη_\mathrm{EW} is the electroweak correction factor. Alternatively, assuming the model-independent form-factor parameterization of Boyd, Grinstein and Lebed and using lattice QCD data from the FNAL/MILC and HPQCD collaborations, we find ηEW∣Vcb∣=(41.10±1.14)×10−3η_\mathrm{EW}|V_{cb}|=(41.10 \pm 1.14)\times 10^{-3}.

Measurement of the Lepton Forward-Backward Asymmetry in B→Xsℓ+ℓ−B \rightarrow X_s \ell^+ \ell^- Decays with a Sum of Exclusive Modes

We report the first measurement of the lepton forward-backward asymmetry AFB{\cal A}_{\rm FB} as a function of the squared four-momentum of the dilepton system, q2q^2, for the electroweak penguin process B→Xsℓ+ℓ−B \rightarrow X_s \ell^+ \ell^- with a sum of exclusive final states, where ℓ\ell is an electron or a muon and XsX_s is a hadronic recoil system with an ss quark. The results are based on a data sample containing 772×106772\times10^6 BBˉB\bar{B} pairs recorded at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e−e^+ e^- collider. AFB{\cal A}_{\rm FB} for the inclusive B→Xsℓ+ℓ−B \rightarrow X_s \ell^+ \ell^- is extrapolated from the sum of 10 exclusive XsX_s states whose invariant mass is less than 2 GeV/c2c^2. For q2>10.2q^2 > 10.2 GeV2^2/c2c^2, AFB<0{\cal A}_{\rm FB} < 0 is excluded at the 2.3σσ level, where σσ is the standard deviation. For q2<4.3q^2 < 4.3 GeV2^2/c2c^2, the result is within 1.8σσ of the Standard Model theoretical expectation.

Observation of Transverse Λ/ΛˉΛ/\barΛ Hyperon Polarization in e+e−e^+e^- Annihilation at Belle

We report the first observation of the polarization of Λ/ΛˉΛ/\barΛ hyperons transverse to its production plane in e+e−e^+e^- annihilation. We observe a significant polarization that rises with the fractional energy carried by the hyperon as well as its transverse momentum. To define the production plane, we use the direction of the hyperon momentum together with either the thrust axis in the event or the momentum vector of a hadron in the opposite hemisphere. Furthermore, we investigate the contributions to the hyperon polarization from the feed-down from Σ0/Σˉ0Σ^0/\barΣ^0 and Λc±Λ_c^{\pm} decays. This measurement uses a dataset of 800.4fb−1^{-1} collected by the Belle experiment at or near a center-of-mass energy of 10.58 GeV.

Spin density matrix elements in exclusive ωω electroproduction on 1^1H and 2^2H targets at 27.5 GeV beam energy

Exclusive electroproduction of ωω mesons on unpolarized hydrogen and deuterium targets is studied in the kinematic region of Q2^2>1.0 GeV2^2, 3.0 GeV < W < 6.3 GeV, and -t'< 0.2 GeV2^2. Results on the angular distribution of the ωω meson, including its decay products, are presented. The data were accumulated with the HERMES forward spectrometer during the 1996-2007 running period using the 27.6 GeV longitudinally polarized electron or positron beam of HERA. The determination of the virtual-photon longitudinal-to-transverse cross-section ratio reveals that a considerable part of the cross section arises from transversely polarized photons. Spin density matrix elements are presented in projections of Q2^2 or -t'. Violation of s-channel helicity conservation is observed for some of these elements. A sizable contribution from unnatural-parity-exchange amplitudes is found and the phase shift between those amplitudes that describe transverse ωω production by longitudinal and transverse virtual photons, γL∗→ωTγ^{*}_{L} \to ω_{T} and γT∗→ωTγ^{*}_{T} \to ω_{T}, is determined for the first time. A hierarchy of helicity amplitudes is established, which mainly means that the unnatural-parity-exchange amplitude describing the γT∗→ωTγ^*_T \to ω_T transition dominates over the two natural-parity-exchange amplitudes describing the γL∗→ωLγ^*_L \to ω_L and γT∗→ωTγ^*_T \to ω_T transitions, with the latter two being of similar magnitude. Good agreement is found between the HERMES proton data and results of a pQCD-inspired phenomenological model that includes pion-pole contributions, which are of unnatural parity.

The cross section is measured for Q2Q^2 up to 30 GeV2^2, where Q2Q^2 is the negative of the invariant mass squared of the tagged photon, in the kinematic range 0.5 GeV < W < 2.1 GeV and ∣cos⁡θ∗∣|\cos θ^*| < 1.0 for the total energy and pion scattering angle, respectively, in the γ∗γγ^* γ center-of-mass system. The results are based on a data sample of 759 fb−1^{-1} collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+ e^- collider. The transition form factor of the f0(980)f_0(980) and that of the f2(1270)f_2(1270) with the helicity-0, -1, and -2 components separately are measured for the first time and are compared with theoretical calculations.

Study of χ_{bJ}(1P) Properties in the Radiative Υ(2S) Decays

We report a study of radiative decays of χ_{bJ}(1P)(J=0,1,2) mesons into 74 hadronic final states comprising charged and neutral pions, kaons, protons; out of these, 41 modes are observed with at least 5 standard deviation significance. Our measurements not only improve the previous measurements by the CLEO Collaboration but also lead to first observations in many new modes. The large sample allows us to probe the total decay width of the χ_{b0}(1P). In the absence of a statistically significant result, a 90% confidence-level upper limit is set on the width at Γ_{total}< 2.4 MeV. Our results are based on 24.7 fb^{-1} of e+e- collision data recorded by the Belle detector at the Υ(2S) resonance, corresponding to (157.8\pm3.6)\times10^6 Υ(2S) decays.

Bose-Einstein correlations in hadron-pairs from lepto-production on nuclei ranging from hydrogen to xenon

Bose-Einstein correlations of like-sign charged hadrons produced in deep-inelastic electron and positron scattering are studied in the HERMES experiment using nuclear targets of 1^1H, 2^2H, 3^3He, 4^4He, N, Ne, Kr, and Xe. A Gaussian approach is used to parametrize a two-particle correlation function determined from events with at least two charged hadrons of the same sign charge. This correlation function is compared to two different empirical distributions that do not include the Bose-Einstein correlations. One distribution is derived from unlike-sign hadron pairs, and the second is derived from mixing like-sign pairs from different events. The extraction procedure used simulations incorporating the experimental setup in order to correct the results for spectrometer acceptance effects, and was tested using the distribution of unlike-sign hadron pairs. Clear signals of Bose-Einstein correlations for all target nuclei without a significant variation with the nuclear target mass are found. Also, no evidence for a dependence on the invariant mass W of the photon-nucleon system is found when the results are compared to those of previous experiments.

Inclusive cross sections for pairs of identified light charged hadrons and for single protons in e+e−e^+e^- at s=\sqrt{s}= 10.58 GeV

We report the first double differential cross sections of two charged pions and kaons (e+e−→hhXe^+e^- \rightarrow hhX) in electron-positron annihilation as a function of the fractional energies of the two hadrons for any charge and hadron combination. The dependence of these di-hadron cross sections on the topology (same, opposite-hemisphere or anywhere) is also studied with the help of the event shape variable thrust and its axis. The ratios of these di-hadron cross sections for different charges and hadron combinations directly shed light on the contributing fragmentation functions. For example, we find that the ratio of same-sign pion pairs over opposite-sign pion pairs drops toward higher fractional energies where disfavored fragmentation is expected to be suppressed. These di-hadron results are obtained from a 655 fb−1655\,{\rm fb}^{-1} data sample collected near the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+ e^- collider. Extending the previously published single-pion and single-kaon cross sections, single-proton (e+e−→pXe^+e^- \rightarrow pX) cross sections are extracted from a 159 fb−1159\,{\rm fb}^{-1} data sub-sample.

Measurement of Azimuthal Modulations in the Cross-Section of Di-Pion Pairs in Di-Jet Production from Electron-Positron Annihilation

We present an extraction of azimuthal correlations between two pairs of charged pions detected in opposite jets from electron-positron annihilation. These correlations may arise from the dependence of the di-pion fragmentation on the polarization of the parent quark in the process e+e−→qqˉe^+e^- \rightarrow q \bar{q}. Due to the correlation of the quark polarizations, the cross-section of di-pion pair production, in which the pion pairs are detected in opposite jets in a dijet event, exhibits a modulation in the azimuthal angles of the planes containing the hadron pairs with respect to the production plane. The measurement of this modulation allows access to combinations of fragmentation functions that are sensitive to the quark's transverse polarization and helicity. Within our uncertainties we do not observe a significant signal from the previously unmeasured helicity dependent fragmentation function G1⊥G_1^\perp. This measurement uses a dataset of 938~fb−1^{-1} collected by the Belle experiment at or near s≈10.58\sqrt{s}\approx10.58 GeV.

Using the full data sample of 772×106772\times10^6 BBˉB\bar{B} pairs collected at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at KEKB accelerator the upper limit is rS<0.87r_S < 0.87 at the 68 % confidence level. This result is the first measurement of rSr_S with a model-independent Dalitz analysis, and is consistent with results from other analyses. The value of rSr_S indicates the sensitivity of the decay to ϕ3ϕ_3 because the statistical uncertainty is proportional to 1/rS1/r_S. The rSr_S result is obtained from observables (x±x_\pm, y±y_\pm) \begin{eqnarray} x_- &=& +0.4 ^{+1.0 +0.0}_{-0.6 -0.1} \pm0.0 \\ y_- &=& -0.6 ^{+0.8 +0.1}_{-1.0 -0.0} \pm0.1 \\ x_+ &=& +0.1 ^{+0.7 +0.0}_{-0.4 -0.1} \pm0.1 \\ y_+ &=& +0.3 ^{+0.5 +0.0}_{-0.8 -0.1} \pm0.1 \\ , \end{eqnarray} where x±=rScos⁡(δS±ϕ3)x_\pm = r_S \cos(δ_S \pm ϕ_3), y±=rSsin⁡(δS±ϕ3)y_\pm = r_S \sin(δ_S \pm ϕ_3) and ϕ3(δS)ϕ_3 (δ_S) are the weak (strong) phase difference between B0→D0K∗0B^0 \to D^0K^{*0} and B0→D0ˉK∗0B^0 \to \bar{D^0}K^{*0}. The first uncertainty is statistical, the second is the experimental systematic and the third is the systematic due to the uncertainties on cic_i and sis_i parameters measured by CLEO.

Measurement of the branching fraction of B^+ -> tau^+ nu_tau decays with the semileptonic tagging method

We report a measurement of the branching fraction of B^+ -> tau^+ nu_tau decays using a data sample of 772 x 10^6 BBbar pairs, collected at the Y(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+e^- collider. We reconstruct the accompanying B meson in a semileptonic decay and detect the recoiling B candidate in the decay channel B^+ -> tau^+ nu_tau. We obtain a branching fraction of BR(B^+ -> tau^+ nu_tau) = [1.25 +- 0.28 (stat.) +- 0.27 (syst.)] x 10^-4. This result is in good agreement with previous measurements and the expectation from the calculation based on the Standard Model.

We report a measurement of the branching fraction ratios R(D(*)) of Bbar -> D(*) tau- nubar_tau relative to Bbar -> D()* l- nubar_l (where l = e or mu) using the full Belle data sample of 772 x 10^6 BBbar pairs collected at the Y(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. The measured values are R(D)= 0.375 +- 0.064(stat.) +- 0.026(syst.) and R(D*) = 0.293 +- 0.038(stat.) +- 0.015(syst.). The analysis uses hadronic reconstruction of the tag-side B meson and purely leptonic tau decays. The results are consistent with earlier measurements and do not show a significant deviation from the standard model prediction.

We report improved measurements of the product branching fractions B(B+→Dˉ0Ds0∗+(2317))×B(Ds0∗+(2317)→Ds+π0)=(8.0−1.2+1.3±1.1±0.4)×10−4{\mathcal B}(B^+\rightarrow\bar{D}^0 D_{s0}^{*+} (2317))\times{\mathcal B}( D_{s0} ^{*+}(2317)\rightarrow D_s^{+}π^0) =(8.0^{+1.3}_{-1.2} \pm 1.1 \pm 0.4)\times 10^{-4} and B(B0→D−Ds0∗+(2317))×B(Ds0∗+(2317)→Ds+π0)=(10.2−1.2+1.3±1.0±0.4)×10−4{\mathcal B}(B^0\rightarrow D^- D_{s0} ^{*+}(2317))\times{\mathcal B}(D_{s0}^{*+}(2317)\rightarrow D_s^{+}π^0) =(10.2^{+1.3}_{-1.2} \pm 1.0 \pm 0.4)\times 10^{-4}, where the first errors are statistical, the second are systematic and the third are from DD and DsD_s branching fractions. In addition, we report negative results from a search for hypothesized neutral (Z0Z^0) and doubly charged (Z++Z^{++}) isospin partners of the Ds0∗+(2317)D_{s0}^{*+}(2317) and provide upper limits on the product branching fractions B(B0→D0z0)×B(z0→Ds+π−){\mathcal B}(B^0 \rightarrow D^0 z^0)\times{\mathcal B}(z^0\rightarrow D_s^{+}π^-) and B(B+→D−z++)×B(z++→Ds+π+){\mathcal B}(B^+\rightarrow D^- z^{++})\times{\mathcal B}(z^{++}\rightarrow D_s^{+}π^+) that are more than an order of magnitude smaller than theoretical expectations for the hypotheses that the Ds0∗+(2317)D_{s0} ^{*+}(2317) is a member of an isospin triplet. Observation of B0→pΛˉD(∗)−B^{0} \rightarrow p\barΛ D^{(*)-}

We report the first observation of the decays B0→pΛˉD(∗)−B^0 \rightarrow p\barΛ D^{(*)-}. The data sample of 711711 fb−1^{-1} used in this analysis corresponds to 772772 million BBˉB\bar{B} pairs, collected at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^{+}e^{-} collider. We observe 19.8σ19.8σ and 10.8σ10.8σ excesses of events for the two decay modes and measure the branching fractions of B0→pΛˉD−B^0 \rightarrow p\barΛ D^{-} and B0→pΛˉD∗−B^0 \rightarrow p\barΛ D^{*-} to be (25.1±2.6±3.5)×10−6(25.1\pm2.6\pm3.5)\times10^{-6} and (33.6±6.3±4.4)×10−6(33.6\pm6.3\pm4.4)\times10^{-6}, respectively, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results are not compatible with the predictions based on the generalized factorization approach. In addition, a threshold enhancement in the di-baryon (pΛˉp\barΛ) system is observed, consistent with that observed in similar BB decays.

The structure observed earlier at an invariant mass of 1528 MeV shifts to 1522 MeV and the statistical significance drops to about 2σσ for data taken with a deuterium target. The Physics of the B Factories

This work is on the Physics of the B Factories. Part A of this book contains a brief description of the SLAC and KEK B Factories as well as their detectors, BaBar and Belle, and data taking related issues. Part B discusses tools and methods used by the experiments in order to obtain results. The results themselves can be found in Part C. Please note that version 3 on the archive is the auxiliary version of the Physics of the B Factories book. This uses the notation alpha, beta, gamma for the angles of the Unitarity Triangle. The nominal version uses the notation phi_1, phi_2 and phi_3. Please cite this work as Eur. Phys. J. C74 (2014) 3026.

Transverse-target-spin asymmetry in exclusive ωω-meson electroproduction

Hard exclusive electroproduction of ωω mesons is studied with the HERMES spectrometer at the DESY laboratory by scattering 27.6 GeV positron and electron beams off a transversely polarized hydrogen target. The amplitudes of five azimuthal modulations of the single-spin asymmetry of the cross section with respect to the transverse proton polarization are measured. They are determined in the entire kinematic region as well as for two bins in photon virtuality and momentum transfer to the nucleon. Also, a separation of asymmetry amplitudes into longitudinal and transverse components is done. These results are compared to a phenomenological model that includes the pion pole contribution. Within this model, the data favor a positive πωπω transition form factor.

We report results on studies of the e+e- annihilation into three-body Y(nS)pi+pi- (n=1,2,3) final states including measurements of cross sections and the full amplitude analysis. The cross sections measured at sqrt(s)=10.865 GeV and corrected for the initial state radiation are sigma(e+e-=>Y(1S)pi+pi-)=(2.27+-0.12+-0.14) pb, sigma(e+e-=>Y(2S)pi+pi-)=(4.07+-0.16+-0.45) pb, and sigma(e+e-=>Y(3S)pi+pi-)=(1.46+-0.09+-0.16) pb. The results are obtained from the final data sample containing 772 x 10^(6) BBbar pairs collected at the Y(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. For the CP violating parameters, we obtain A(B0 -> omega KS) = -0.36 +/- 0.19 (stat) +/- 0.05 (syst), S(B0 -> omega KS) = +0.91 +/- 0.32 (stat) +/- 0.05 (syst), A(B- -> omega K-) = -0.03 +/- 0.04 (stat) +/- 0.01 syst), where A and S represent the direct and mixing-induced CP asymmetry, respectively. We report a measurement of the branching fraction of B+→τ+ντB^+ \to τ^+ ν_τ decays using a data sample of 772×106BBˉ772 \times 10^6 B \bar{B} pairs, collected at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+e^- collider. We reconstruct the accompanying BB meson in a semileptonic decay and detect the B+→τ+ντB^+ \to τ^+ ν_τ candidate in the recoiling event. We obtain a branching fraction of B(B+→τ+ντ)=[1.25±0.28(stat.)±0.27(syst.)]×10−4{\cal B}(B^+ \to τ^+ ν_τ) = [1.25 \pm 0.28 ({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.27({\rm syst.})] \times 10^{-4}. This result is in good agreement with previous measurements and the expectation from calculations based on the Standard Model.

Measurement of the inclusive semileptonic branching fraction B(Bs0→X−ℓ+νℓ)\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \rightarrow X^- \ell^+ ν_\ell) at Belle

We report a measurement of the inclusive semileptonic Bs0B_s^0 branching fraction in a 121 fb−1121~fb^{-1} data sample collected near the Υ(5S)Υ(5S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy e+e−e^+ e^- collider. Events containing Bs0B_s^0 pairs are selected by reconstructing a tag side Ds+D_s^+ and identifying a signal side lepton ℓ+\ell^+ (ℓ=e,μ\ell = e, μ) that is required to have the same-sign charge to ensure that both originate from different Bs0B_s^0 mesons. The Bs0→X−ℓ+νℓB_s^0 \rightarrow X^- \ell^+ ν_\ell branching fraction is extracted from the ratio of the measured yields of Ds+D_s^+ mesons and Ds+ℓ+D_s^+ \ell^+ pairs and the known production and branching fractions. The inclusive semileptonic branching fraction is measured to be [9.6±0.4(stat)±0.7(syst)] %[9.6 \pm 0.4\text{(stat)} \pm 0.7\text{(syst)}]~\%.

We present a measurement of the time-dependent CPCP violation parameters in B0→η′K0B^0\toη'K^0 decays. The measurement is based on the full data sample containing 772×106772\times 10^6 BBˉB\bar{B} pairs collected at the Υ(4S)Υ(4S) resonance using the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e−e^+e^- collider. Reevaluation of the parton distribution of strange quarks in the nucleon

An earlier extraction from the HERMES experiment of the polarization-averaged parton distribution of strange quarks in the nucleon has been reevaluated using final data on the multiplicities of charged kaons in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering obtained with a kinematically more comprehensive method of correcting for experimental effects. General features of the distribution are confirmed, but the rise at low x is less pronounced than previously reported.

Our result is in good agreement with the theoretical predictions as well as with a recent measurement from LHCb. We observe no statistically significant signal for the decay Bs0→γγB_{s}^{0}\rightarrowγγ and set a 90%90\% confidence-level upper limit on its branching fraction at 3.1×10−6 3.1 \times 10^{-6}. The results are obtained from the final data sample containing 772 million BBbar pairs collected at the Y(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. Azimuthal distributions of charged hadrons, pions, and kaons produced in deep-inelastic scattering off unpolarized protons and deuterons

The azimuthal cosϕ and cos2ϕ modulations of the distribution of hadrons produced in unpolarized semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of electrons and positrons off hydrogen and deuterium targets have been measured in the HERMES experiment. For the first time these modulations were determined in a four-dimensional kinematic space for positively and negatively charged pions and kaons separately, as well as for unidentified hadrons. Experimental constraints on the spin and parity of the Z(4430)+

We perform a full amplitude analysis of B0 -> psi' K+ pi- decays, with psi' -> mu+ mu- or e+ e-, to constrain the spin and parity of the Z(4430)-. The J^P=1+ hypothesis is favored over the 0-, 1-, 2- and 2+ hypotheses at the levels of 3.4 sigma, 3.7 sigma, 4.7 sigma and 5.1 sigma, respectively. The analysis is based on a 711 fb^-1 data sample that contains 772x10^6 B B pairs, collected at the Y(4S) resonance by the Belle detector at the asymmetric-energy e+ e- collider KEKB.

High-statistics study of K^0_S pair production in two-photon collisions

We report a high-statistics measurement of the differential cross section of the process gamma gamma --> K^0_S K^0_S in the range 1.05 GeV <= W <= 4.00 GeV, where W is the center-of-mass energy of the colliding photons, using 972 fb^{-1} of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+ e^- collider operated at and near the Upsilon-resonance region. The differential cross section is fitted by parameterized S-, D_0-, D_2-, G_0- and G_2-wave amplitudes. In the D_2 wave, the f_2(1270), a_2(1320) and f_2'(1525) are dominant and a resonance, the f_2(2200), is also present. The f_0(1710) and possibly the f_0(2500) are seen in the S wave. The mass, total width and product of the two-photon partial decay width and decay branching fraction to the K bar{K} state Gamma_{gamma gamma}B(K bar{K}) are extracted for the f_2'(1525), f_0(1710), f_2(2200) and f_0(2500). The destructive interference between the f_2(1270) and a_2(1320) is confirmed by measuring their relative phase. The parameters of the charmonium states chi_{c0} and chi_{c2} are updated. Possible contributions from the chi_{c0}(2P) and chi_{c2}(2P) states are discussed. A new upper limit for the branching fraction of the P- and CP-violating decay channel eta_c --> K^0_S K^0_S is reported. The detailed behavior of the cross section is updated and compared with QCD-based calculations.

The results are obtained from a data sample of 913 fb^-1 collected at or near the Y(4S) and Y(5S) resonances with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. The branching fractions of hadronic decays are measured to be Br(Ds+ -> K- K+ pi+) = (5.06 +- 0.15 +- 0.21)%, Br(Ds+ -> anti-K0 K+) = (2.95 +- 0.11 +- 0.09)%, and Br(Ds+ -> eta pi+) = (1.82 +- 0.14 +- 0.07)%, where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. The branching fractions of leptonic decays are measured to be Br(Ds+ -> mu+ nu_mu) = (0.531 +- 0.028 +- 0.020)%, and Br(Ds+ -> tau+ nu_tau) = (5.70 +- 0.21 +0.31-0.30)%, which are combined to determine the Ds+ meson decay constant f_Ds = (255.5 +- 4.2 +- 5.1) MeV. Search for Bottomonium States in Exclusive Radiative Upsilon(2S) Decays

The (bb-bar) system is reconstructed in 26 exclusive hadronic final states composed of charged pions, kaons, protons, and K^0_S mesons. Study of e+e−→π+π−J/ψe^+ e^- \to π^+ π^- J/ψ and Observation of a Charged Charmonium-like State at Belle

The cross section for e+e−→π+π−J/ψe^+ e^- \to π^+ π^- J/ψ between 3.8 GeV and 5.5 GeV is measured with a 967 fb−1^{-1} data sample collected by the Belle detector at or near the Υ(nS)Υ(nS) (n=1, 2, ..., 5n = 1,\ 2,\ ...,\ 5) resonances. The Y(4260) state is observed, and its resonance parameters are determined. In addition, an excess of π+π−J/ψπ^+ π^- J/ψ production around 4 GeV is observed. This feature can be described by a Breit-Wigner parameterization with properties that are consistent with the Y(4008) state that was previously reported by Belle. In a study of Y(4260)→π+π−J/ψY(4260) \to π^+ π^- J/ψ decays, a structure is observed in the $M(π^\pm\jpsi)$ mass spectrum with 5.2σ5.2σ significance, with mass M=(3894.5±6.6±4.5)MeV/c2M=(3894.5\pm 6.6\pm 4.5) {\rm MeV}/c^2 and width Γ=(63±24±26)Γ=(63\pm 24\pm 26) MeV/c2c^{2}, where the errors are statistical and systematic, respectively. Study of Exclusive B->X_u l nu Decays and Extraction of |V_{ub}| using Full Reconstruction Tagging at the Belle Experiment

We report the results of a study of the exclusive semileptonic decays B->pi0lnu, B->pi+lnu, B->rho0lnu, B->rho+lnu and B->omegalnu, where l represents an electron or a muon. The events are tagged by fully reconstructing a second B meson in the event in a hadronic decay mode. The measured branching fractions are Br(B->pi0lnu) = (0.80 +- 0.08 +- 0.04)x10^-4, Br(B->pi+lnu) = (1.49 +- 0.09 +- 0.07)x10^-4, Br(B->rho0lnu) = (1.83 +- 0.10 +- 0.10)x10^-4, Br(B->rho+lnu) = (3.22 +- 0.27 +- 0.24)x10^-4, and Br(B->omegalnu) =(1.07 +- 0.16 +- 0.07)x10^-4, where the first error is statistical and the second one is systematic. The obtained branching fractions are inclusive of soft photon emission. We also determine the branching fractions as a function of the 4-momentum transfer squared to the leptonic system q^2=(p_l+p_nu)^2, where p_l and p_nu are the lepton and neutrino 4-momenta, respectively. Using the pion modes, a recent LCSR calculation, lattice QCD results and a model-independent description of the hadronic form factor, a value of the CKM matrix element |V_{ub}| = (3.52 +- 0.29)x10^-3 is extracted. For the first time, a charmless state with invariant mass greater than 1 GeV/c^2, which might be dominated by the decay B->f2lnu, is observed. These results are obtained from a 711 1/fb data sample that contains 772 millions BB pairs, collected near the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e^+ e^- collider.

The HERMES Recoil Detector

For the final running period of HERA, a recoil detector was installed at the HERMES experiment to improve measurements of hard exclusive processes in charged-lepton nucleon scattering. Here, deeply virtual Compton scattering is of particular interest as this process provides constraints on generalised parton distributions that give access to the total angular momenta of quarks within the nucleon. The HERMES recoil detector was designed to improve the selection of exclusive events by a direct measurement of the four-momentum of the recoiling particle. It consisted of three components: two layers of double-sided silicon strip sensors inside the HERA beam vacuum, a two-barrel scintillating fibre tracker, and a photon detector. All sub-detectors were located inside a solenoidal magnetic field with an integrated field strength of 1 T. The recoil detector was installed in late 2005. After the commissioning of all components was finished in September 2006, it operated stably until the end of data taking at HERA end of June 2007. The present paper gives a brief overview of the physics processes of interest and the general detector design. The recoil detector components, their calibration, the momentum reconstruction of charged particles, and the event selection are described in detail. The paper closes with a summary of the performance of the detection system.

Transverse target single-spin asymmetry in inclusive electroproduction of charged pions and kaons

Single-spin asymmetries were investigated in inclusive electroproduction of charged pions and kaons from transversely polarized protons at the HERMES experiment. The asymmetries were studied as a function of the azimuthal angle ψψ about the beam direction between the target-spin direction and the hadron production plane, the transverse hadron momentum relative to the direction of the incident beam, and the Feynman variable xFx_F. The sin⁡(ψ)\sin(ψ) amplitudes are positive for positive pions and kaons, slightly negative for negative pions and consistent with zero for negative kaons, with particular transverse-momentum but weak xFx_F dependences. Especially large asymmetries are observed for two small subsamples of events, where also the scattered electron was recorded by the spectrometer.

Beam-helicity and beam-charge asymmetries associated with deeply virtual Compton scattering on the unpolarised proton

Beam-helicity and beam-charge asymmetries in the hard exclusive leptoproduction of real photons from an unpolarised hydrogen target by a 27.6 GeV lepton beam are extracted from the HERMES data set of 2006-2007 using a missing-mass event selection technique. The asymmetry amplitudes extracted from this data set are more precise than those extracted from the earlier data set of 1996-2005 previously analysed in the same manner by HERMES. The results from the two data sets are compatible with each other. Results from these combined data sets are extracted and constitute the most precise asymmetry amplitude measurements made in the HERMES kinematic region using a missing-mass event selection technique.

Beam-helicity asymmetry arising from deeply virtual Compton scattering measured with kinematically complete event reconstruction

The beam-helicity asymmetry in exclusive electroproduction of real photons by the longitudinally polarized HERA positron beam scattering off an unpolarized hydrogen target is measured at HERMES. The asymmetry arises from deeply virtual Compton scattering and its interference with the Bethe--Heitler process. Azimuthal amplitudes of the beam-helicity asymmetry are extracted from a data sample consisting of ep→epγep\rightarrow epγ events with detection of all particles in the final state including the recoiling proton. The installation of a recoil detector, while reducing the acceptance of the experiment, allows the elimination of background from ep→eNπγep\rightarrow eNπγ events, which was estimated to contribute an average of about 12% to the signal in previous HERMES publications. The removal of this background from the present data sample is shown to increase the magnitude of the leading asymmetry amplitude by 0.054 +/- 0.016 to -0.328 +/- 0.027 (stat.) +/- 0.045 (syst.).

We observe the ηη meson decay to γγγγ and π+π−π0π^+π^-π^0 final states; the Υ(1S)Υ(1S) is reconstructed in the μ+μ−μ^+μ^- and e+e−e^+e^- decay modes. We measure the ratios of branching fractions (B{\mathcal B}) B(Υ(2S)→Υ(1S)η)B(Υ(2S)→Υ(1S)π+π−)\frac{{\mathcal B}(Υ(2S)\rightarrowΥ(1S)η)}{{\mathcal B}(Υ(2S)\rightarrowΥ(1S)π^+π^-)} = (1.99±\pm0.14 (stat) ±\pm0.11 (syst)) ×10−3\times 10^{-3} and B(Υ(2S)→Υ(1S)π0)B(Υ(2S)→Υ(1S)π+π−)<2.3×10−4\frac{{\mathcal B}(Υ(2S)\rightarrowΥ(1S)π^0)}{{\mathcal B}(Υ(2S)\rightarrowΥ(1S)π^+π^-)} < 2.3 \times 10^{-4} at the 90% confidence level (CL). Assuming the value B(Υ(2S)→Υ(1S)π−π+){\mathcal B}(Υ(2S) \rightarrow Υ(1S)π^-π^+) = (17.92±\pm0.26)%, we obtain B(Υ(2S)→Υ(1S)η)=(3.57±0.25(stat) ±0.21(syst))×10−4 {\mathcal B}(Υ(2S)\rightarrowΥ(1S)η) = (3.57 \pm 0.25 ({\rm stat})\ \pm 0.21 ({\rm syst}))\times 10^{-4} and $ {\mathcal B}(Υ(2S)\rightarrowΥ(1S)π^0) < 4.1\times 10^{-5}\ ({\rm 90%\ CL}). $

Inclusive Measurements of Inelastic Electron and Positron Scattering from Unpolarized Hydrogen and Deuterium Targets

Results of inclusive measurements of inelastic electron and positron scattering from unpolarized protons and deuterons at the HERMES experiment are presented. The structure functions F2pF_2^p and F2dF_2^d are determined using a parameterization of existing data for the longitudinal-to-transverse virtual-photon absorption cross-section ratio. The HERMES results provide data in the ranges 0.006≤x≤0.90.006\leq x\leq 0.9 and 0.1 GeV2≤Q2≤^2\leq Q^2\leq 20 GeV2^2, covering the transition region between the perturbative and the non-perturbative regimes of QCD in a so-far largely unexplored kinematic region. They are in agreement with existing world data in the region of overlap. The measured cross sections are used, in combination with data from other experiments, to perform fits to the photon-nucleon cross section using the functional form of the ALLM model. The deuteron-to-proton cross-section ratio is also determined.

Measurement of azimuthal asymmetries associated with deeply virtual Compton scattering on a longitudinally polarized deuterium target

Azimuthal asymmetries in exclusive electroproduction of a real photon from a longitudinally polarized deuterium target are measured with respect to target polarization alone and with respect to target polarization combined with beam helicity and/or beam charge. The asymmetries appear in the distribution of the real photons in the azimuthal angle ϕϕ around the virtual photon direction, relative to the lepton scattering plane. The asymmetries arise from the deeply virtual Compton scattering process and its interference with the Bethe-Heitler process. The results for the beam-charge and beam-helicity asymmetries from a tensor polarized deuterium target with vanishing vector polarization are shown to be compatible with those from an unpolarized deuterium target, which is expected for incoherent scattering dominant at larger momentum transfer. Furthermore, the results for the single target-spin asymmetry and for the double-spin asymmetry are found to be compatible with the corresponding asymmetries previously measured on a hydrogen target. For coherent scattering on the deuteron at small momentum transfer to the target, these findings imply that the tensor contribution to the cross section is small. Furthermore, the tensor asymmetry is found to be compatible with zero.

Measurement of double-spin asymmetries associated with deeply virtual Compton scattering on a transversely polarized hydrogen target

Double-spin asymmetries in exclusive electroproduction of real photons from a transversely polarized hydrogen target are measured with respect to the product of target polarization with beam helicity and beam charge, and with respect to the product of target polarization with beam helicity alone. The asymmetries arise from the deeply virtual Compton scattering process and its interference with the Bethe--Heitler process. They are related to the real part of the same combination of Compton form factors as that determining the previously published transverse target single-spin asymmetries through the imaginary part. The results for the double-spin asymmetries are found to be compatible with zero within the uncertainties of the measurement, and are not incompatible with the predictions of the only available GPD-based calculation.

Multidimensional Study of Hadronization in Nuclei

Hadron multiplicities in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering were measured on neon, krypton and xenon targets relative to deuterium at an electron(positron)-beam energy of 27.6 GeV at HERMES. These ratios were determined as a function of the virtual-photon energy nu, its virtuality Q2, the fractional hadron energy z and the transverse hadron momentum with respect to the virtual-photon direction pt . Dependences were analysed separately for positively and negatively charged pions and kaons as well as protons and antiprotons in a two-dimensional representation. Compared to the one-dimensional dependences, some new features were observed. In particular, when z > 0.4 positive kaons do not show the strong monotonic rise of the multiplicity ratio with nu as exhibited by pions and negative kaons. Protons were found to behave very differently from the other hadrons.

Ratios of Helicity Amplitudes for Exclusive rho-0 Electroproduction

Exclusive rho^0-meson electroproduction is studied in the HERMES experiment, using a 27.6 GeV longitudinally polarized electron/positron beam and unpolarized hydrogen and deuterium targets in the kinematic region 0.5 GeV^2 < Q^2 < 7.0 GeV^2, 3.0 GeV < W < 6.3 GeV, and -t' < 0.4 GeV^2. Real and imaginary parts of the ratios of the natural-parity-exchange helicity amplitudes T_{11} (γ^*_T --> ρ_T), T_{01} (γ^*_T --> ρ_L), T_{10} (γ^*_L --> ρ_T), and T_{1-1} (γ^*_{-T} -->ρ_T) to T_{00} (γ^*_L --> ρ_L) are extracted from the data. For the unnatural-parity-exchange amplitude U_{11}, the ratio |U_{11}/T_{00}| is obtained. The Q^2 and t' dependences of these ratios are presented and compared with perturbative QCD predictions.

Effects of transversity in deep-inelastic scattering by polarized protons

Single-spin asymmetries for pions and charged kaons are measured in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering of positrons and electrons off a transversely nuclear-polarized hydrogen target. The dependence of the cross section on the azimuthal angles of the target polarization (phi_S)and the produced hadron (phi) is found to have a substantial sin(phi+phi_S) modulation for the production of pi+, pi- and K+. This Fourier component can be interpreted in terms of non-zero transversity distribution functions and non-zero favored and disfavored Collins fragmentation functions with opposite sign. For pi0 and K- production the amplitude of this Fourier component is consistent with zero.

Exclusive Leptoproduction of Real Photons on a Longitudinally Polarised Hydrogen Target

Polarisation asymmetries are measured for the hard exclusive leptoproduction of real photons from a longitudinally polarised hydrogen target. These asymmetries arise from the deeply virtual Compton scattering and Bethe-Heitler processes. From the data are extracted two asymmetries in the azimuthal distribution of produced real photons about the direction of the exchanged virtual photon: A_UL with respect to the target polarisation and A_LL with respect to the product of the beam and target polarisations. Results for both asymmetries are compared to the predictions from a generalised parton distribution model. The sin(phi) and cos(0*phi) amplitudes observed respectively for the A_UL and A_LL asymmetries are compatible with the sizeable predictions from the model. Unexpectedly, a sin(2*phi) modulation in the A_UL asymmetry with a magnitude similar to that of the sin(phi) modulation is observed.
