Bol's type inequality for singular metrics and its application to prescribing QQ-curvature problems

In this article, we study higher-order Bol's inequality for radial normal solutions to a singular Liouville equation. By applying these inequalities along with compactness arguments, we derive necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of radial normal solutions to a singular QQ-curvature problem. Moreover, under suitable assumptions on the QQ-curvature, we obtain uniform bounds on the total QQ-curvature.

Exploring Jupiter's Polar Deformation Lengths with High Resolution Shallow Water Modeling

The polar regions of Jupiter host a myriad of dynamically interesting phenomena including vortex configurations, folded-filamentary regions (FFRs), and chaotic flows. Juno observations have provided unprecedented views of the high latitudes, allowing for more constraints to be placed upon the troposphere and the overall atmospheric energy cycle. Moist convective events are believed to be the primary drivers of energetic storm behavior as observed on the planet. Here, we introduce a novel single layer shallow water model to investigate the effects of polar moist convective events at high resolution, the presence of dynamical instabilities over long timescales, and the emergence of FFRs at high latitudes. We use a flexible, highly parallelizable, finite-difference hydrodynamic code to explore the parameter space set up by previous models. We study the long term effects of deformation length (Ld), injected pulse size, and injected geopotential. We find that models with Ld beyond 1500 km (planetary Burger number, Bu=4.4×10−4=4.4\times10^{-4}) tend to homogenize their potential vorticity (PV) in the form of dominant stable polar cyclones, while lower Ld cases tend to show less stability with regards to Arnol'd-type flows. We also find that large turbulent forcing scales consistently lead to the formation of high latitude FFRs. Our findings support the idea that moist convection, occurring at high latitudes, may be sufficient to produce the dynamical variety seen at the Jovian poles. Additionally, derived values of localized horizontal shear and Ld may constrain FFR formation and evolution.

Partial regularity of the heat flow of half-harmonic maps and applications to harmonic maps with free boundary

We introduce a heat flow associated to half-harmonic maps, which have been introduced by Da Lio and Rivière. Those maps exhibit integrability by compensation in one space dimension and are related to harmonic maps with free boundary. We consider a new flow associated to these harmonic maps with free boundary which is actually motivated by a rather unusual heat flow for half-harmonic maps. We construct then weak solutions and prove their partial regularity in space and time via a Ginzburg-Landau approximation. The present paper complements the study initiated by Struwe and Chen-Lin.

Classification of stable solutions to a non-local Gelfand-Liouville equation

We study finite Morse index solutions to the non-local Gelfand-Liouville problem (−Δ)su=euinRn, (-Δ)^su=e^u\quad\mathrm{in}\quad \mathbb{R}^n, for every s∈(0,1)s\in(0,1) and n>2sn>2s. Precisely, we prove non-existence of finite Morse index solutions whenever the singular solution un,s(x)=−2slog⁡∣x∣+log⁡(22sΓ(n2)Γ(1+s)Γ(n−2s2))u_{n,s}(x)=-2s\log|x|+\log \left(2^{2s}\frac{Γ(\frac{n}{2})Γ(1+s)}{Γ(\frac{n-2s}{2})}\right) is unstable.

Concentration phenomena to a higher order Liouville equation

We study blow-up and quantization phenomena for a sequence of solutions (uk)(u_k) to the prescribed QQ-curvature problem (−Δ)nuk=Qke2nukin Ω⊂R2n,∫Ωe2nukdx≤C, (-Δ)^nu_k= Q_ke^{2nu_k}\quad \text{in }Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^{2n},\quad \int_Ωe^{2nu_k}dx\leq C, under natural assumptions on QkQ_k. It is well-known that, up to a subsequence, either (uk)(u_k) is bounded in a suitable norm, or there exists βk→∞β_k\to\infty such that uk=βk(φ+o(1)) u_k=β_k(φ+o(1)) in Ω∖(S1∪Sφ)Ω\setminus (S_1\cup S_φ) for some non-trivial non-positive nn-harmonic function φφ and for a finite set S1S_1, where SφS_φ is the zero set of φφ. We prove quantization of the total curvature ∫Ω~Qke2nukdx\int_{\tildeΩ}Q_ke^{2nu_k}dx on the region Ω~⋐(Ω∖Sφ)\tildeΩ\Subset(Ω\setminus S_φ). We also consider a non-local case in dimension three.

Removability of singularities and superharmonicity for some fractional Laplacian equations

We study some qualitative properties (including removable singularities and superharmonicity) of non-negative solutions to (−Δ)γu=fupin Rn∖Σ (-Δ)^γu=fu^p\quad\text{in }\mathbb R^n\setminusΣ which are singular at ΣΣ. Here γ∈(0,n2)γ\in (0, \frac{n}{2}). Among other things, we first prove that if ΣΣ is a compact set in Rn\mathbb R^n with Assouad dimension d\bf d (not necessarily an integer), d<n−2γ{\bf d}<n-2γ, and u∈Lγ(Rn)∩Llocp(Rn∖Σ) u\in L_γ(\mathbb R^n)\cap L^p_{loc}({\mathbb R^n\setminusΣ}) is a non-negative solution for some p>n−dn−d−2γ,p>\frac{n-\bf d}{n-{\bf d}-2γ}, then u∈Llocp(Rn)u\in L^p_{loc}(\mathbb R^n) and uu is a distributional solution in Rn\mathbb R^n. Then we prove that (−Δ)σu>0 (-Δ)^σu >0 for all σ∈(0,γ) σ\in (0, γ), if Σ=ϕΣ=ϕ.

On SU(3)SU(3) Toda system with multiple singular sources

We consider the singular SU(3)SU(3) Toda system with multiple singular sources \begin{align*} \left\{\begin{array}{ll}-Δw_1=2e^{2w_1}-e^{w_2}+2π\sum_{\ell=1}^mβ_{1,\ell}δ_{P_{\ell}}\quad\text{in }\mathbb{R}^2\\ \rule{0cm}{.5cm} -Δw_2=2e^{2w_2}-e^{w_1}+2π\sum_{\ell=1}^mβ_{2,\ell}δ_{P_{\ell}}\quad\text{in }\mathbb{R}^2 \\ w_i(x)=-2\log|x|+O(1)\quad\text{as }|x|\to\infty,\, i=1,2, \end{array}\right.\end{align*} with m≥3m\geq 3 and βi,ℓ∈[0,1)β_{i,\ell}\in [0,1). We prove the existence and non-existence results under suitable assumptions on βi,ℓβ_{i,\ell}. This generalizes Luo-Tian's \cite{Luo-Tian} result for a singular Liouville equation in R2\mathbb{R}^2. We also study existence results for a higher order singular Liouville equation in Rn\mathbb{R}^n.

Concentration phenomena for the fractional QQ-curvature equation in dimension 3 and fractional Poisson formulas

We study the compactness properties of metrics of prescribed fractional QQ-curvature of order 33 in R3\R^3. We will use an approach inspired from conformal geometry, seeing a metric on a subset of R3\R^3 as the restriction of a metric on R+4\R^4_+ with vanishing fourth-order QQ-curvature. We will show that a sequence of such metrics with uniformly bounded fractional QQ-curvature can blow up on a large set (roughly, the zero set of the trace of a nonpositive biharmonic function ΦΦ in R+4\R^4_+), in analogy with a 44-dimensional result of Adimurthi-Robert-Struwe, and construct examples of such behaviour. In doing so, we produce general Poisson-type representation formulas (also for higher dimension), which are of independent interest.

Existence of entire solutions to a fractional Liouville equation in Rn\mathbb{R}^n

We study the existence of solutions to the problem (−Δ)n2u=Qenuin Rn,V:=∫Rnenudx<∞, (-Δ)^{\frac{n}{2}}u = Qe^{nu}\quad\text{in }\mathbb{R}^n, \quad V := \int_{\mathbb{R}^n}e^{nu}dx < \infty, where Q=(n−1)!Q=(n-1)! or Q=−(n−1)!Q=-(n-1)!. Extending the works of Wei-Ye and Hyder-Martinazzi to arbitrary odd dimension n≥3n\geq 3 we show that to a certain extent the asymptotic behavior of uu and the constant VV can be prescribed simultaneously. Furthermore if Q=−(n−1)!Q=-(n-1)! then VV can be chosen to be any positive number. This is in contrast to the case n=3n=3, Q=2Q=2, where Jin-Maalaoui-Martinazzi-Xiong showed that necessarily V≤∣S3∣V\le |S^3|, and to the case n=4n=4, Q=6Q=6, where C-S. Lin showed that V≤∣S4∣V\le |S^4|.

Moser functions and fractional Moser-Trudinger type inequalities

We improve the sharpness of some fractional Moser-Trudinger type inequalities, particularly those studied by Lam-Lu and Martinazzi. As an application, improving upon works of Adimurthi and Lakkis, we prove the existence of weak solutions to the problem (−Δ)n2u=λuebu2  in Ω, 0<λ<λ1, b>0,(-Δ)^\frac{n}{2}u=λue^{bu^2} \,\text{ in }Ω,\, 0<λ<λ_1,\,b>0, with Dirichlet boundary condition, for any domain ΩΩ in Rn\mathbb{R}^n with finite measure. Here λ1λ_1 is the first eigenvalue of (−Δ)n2(-Δ)^\frac n2 on ΩΩ.

Structure of conformal metrics on Rn\mathbb{R}^n with constant QQ-curvature

In this article we study the nonlocal equation \begin{align} (-Δ)^{\frac{n}{2}}u=(n-1)!e^{nu}\quad \text{in Rn\mathbb{R}^n}, \quad\int_{\mathbb{R}^n}e^{nu}dx<\infty, \notag \end{align} which arises in the conformal geometry. Inspired by the previous work of C. S. Lin and L. Martinazzi in even dimension and T. Jin, A. Maalaoui, L. Martinazzi, J. Xiong in dimension three we classify all solutions to the above equation in terms of their behavior at infinity.

Conformal metrics on R2mR^{2m} with constant Q-curvature, prescribed volume and asymptotic behavior

We study the solutions u∈C∞(R2m)u\in C^\infty(R^{2m}) of the problem (−Δ)mu=Qe2mu(-Δ)^m u= Qe^{2mu}, where Q=±(2m−1)!Q=\pm (2m-1)!, and V:=∫R2me2mudx<∞V :=\int_{R^{2m}}e^{2mu}dx <\infty, particularly when m>1m>1. This corresponds to finding conformal metrics gu:=e2u∣dx∣2g_u:=e^{2u}|dx|^2 on R2mR^{2m} with constant Q-curvature QQ and finite volume VV. Extending previous works of Chang-Chen, and Wei-Ye, we show that both the value VV and the asymptotic behavior of u(x)u(x) as ∣x∣→∞|x|\to \infty can be simultaneously prescribed, under certain restrictions. When Q=(2m−1)!Q=(2m-1)! we need to assume V<vol(S2m)V<vol(S^{2m}), but surprisingly for Q=−(2m−1)!Q=-(2m-1)! the volume VV can be chosen arbitrarily.
