Almost-additivity of analytic capacity and Cauchy independent measures

We show that, given a family of discs centered at a chord-arc curve, the analytic capacity of a union of arbitrary subsets of these discs (one subset in each disc) is comparable with the sum of their analytic capacities. We show a sort of converse to this geometric statement as well. However, we need that the discs in question would be separated, and it is not clear whether the separation condition is essential or not. We apply this result to find families {μj}\{μ_j\} of measures in C\mathbb{C} with the following property. If the Cauchy integral operators Cμj\mathcal{C}_{μ_j} from L2(μj)L^2(μ_j) to itself are bounded uniformly in jj, then Cμ\mathcal{C}_μ, μ=∑μjμ=\sumμ_j, is also bounded from L2(μ)L^2(μ) to itself.

Bellman approach to the one-sided bumping for weighted estimates of Calderón--Zygmund operators

We give again (see also arXiv:1112.0676) a proof of weighted estimate of any Calderón-Zygmund operator. This is under a universal sharp sufficient condition that is weaker than the so-called bump condition. Bump conjecture was recently solved independently and simultaneously by A. Lerner (arXiv:1202.1860) and Nazarov--Reznikov-Treil-Volberg (arXiv:1202.2406). The latter paper uses the Bellman approach. Immediately a very natural and seemingly simple question arises how to strengthen the bump conjecture result by weakening its assumptions in a natural symmetric way. This is what we are dealing with here. However we meet an unexpected and, in our opinion, deep obstacle, that allows us to achieve only a partial result. The result of the present article is slightly stronger than the one in arXiv:1112.0676. Our proof consists of two main parts: reduction to a simple model operator, construction of Bellman function for estimating this simple operator. The newer feature is that the domain of definition of our Bellman function is infinitely dimensional.

Logarithmic bump conditions and the two weight boundedness of Calderón-Zygmund operators

We prove that if a pair of weights (u,v)(u,v) satisfies a sharp ApA_p-bump condition in the scale of log bumps and certain loglog bumps, then Haar shifts map Lp(v)L^p(v) into Lp(u)L^p(u) with a constant quadratic in the complexity of the shift. This in turn implies the two weight boundedness for all Calderón-Zygmund operators. This gives a partial answer to a long-standing conjecture. We also give a partial result for a related conjecture for weak-type inequalities. To prove our main results we combine several different approaches to these problems; in particular we use many of the ideas developed to prove the A2A_2 conjecture. As a byproduct of our work we also disprove a conjecture by Muckenhoupt and Wheeden on weak-type inequalities for the Hilbert transform. This is closely related to the recent counterexamples of Reguera, Scurry and Thiele.

The proof of A2A_2 conjecture in a geometrically doubling metric space

We give a proof of the A2A_2 conjecture in geometrically doubling metric spaces (GDMS), i.e. a metric space where one can fit not more than a fixed amount of disjoint balls of radius rr in a ball of radius 2r2r. Our proof consists of three main parts: a construction of a random "dyadic" lattice in a metric space; a clever averaging trick from [3], which decomposes a "hard" part of a Calderon-Zygmund operator into dyadic shifts (adjusted to metric setting); and the estimates for these dyadic shifts, made in [16] and later in [19].

Carleson--Buckley measures beyond the scope of A∞A_\infty and their applications

Carleson measures are ubiquitous in Harmonic Analysis. In the paper of Fefferman--Kenig--Pipher in 1991 an interesting class of Carleson measures was introduced for the need of regularity problems of elliptic PDE. These Carleson measures were associated with A∞A_\infty weights. In discrete setting (we need exactly discrete setting here) they were studied by Buckley's, where they were associated with dyadic A∞dA\infty^d. Our goal here is to show that such Carleson--Buckley measures (in discrete setting) exists for virtually any positive function (weight). Of course some modification is needed, because it is known that Carleson property of Buckley's measure are equivalent to the weight to be in A∞dA_\infty^d. However a very natural generalization of those facts exist for weights more general A∞A_\infty, and of course, in a special case of A∞dA_\infty^d it gives Buckley's results. Our generalization of Buckley's inequality beyond the scope of A∞A_\infty allows us to prove the so-called bump conjecture.

Equivalent definitions of dyadic Muckenhoupt and Reverse Hölder classes in terms of Carleson sequences, weak classes, and comparability of dyadic Llog⁡LL\log L and A∞A_\infty constants

In the dyadic case the union of the Reverse Hölder classes, RHpdRH_p^d is strictly larger than the union of the Muckenhoupt classes Apd A_p^d. We introduce the RH1dRH_1^d condition as a limiting case of the RHpdRH_p^d inequalities as pp tends to 1 and show the sharp bound on RH1dRH_1^d constant of the weight ww in terms of its A∞dA_\infty^d constant. We also take a look at the summation conditions of the Buckley type for the dyadic Reverse Hölder and Muckenhoupt weights and deduce them from an intrinsic lemma which gives a summation representation of the bumped average of a weight. Our lemmata also allow us to obtain summation conditions for continuous Reverse Hölder and Muckenhoupt classes of weights and both continuous and dyadic weak Reverse Hölder classes. In particular, it shows that a weight belongs to the class RH1RH_1 if and only if it satisfies Buckley's inequality. We also show that the constant in each summation inequality of Buckley's type is comparable to the corresponding Muckenhoupt or Reverse Hölder constant.

Sharp estimates involving A∞A_\infty and LlogLLlogL constants, and their applications to PDE

It is a well known fact that the union of the Reverse Hölder classes coincides with the union of the Muckenhoupt classes ApA_p, but the A∞A_\infty constant of the weight ww, which is a limit of its ApA_p constants, is not a natural characterization for the weight in Reverse Hölder classes. We introduce the RH1RH_1 condition as a limiting case of the RHpRH_p inequalities as pp tends to 1. Then we show sharp bound on RH1RH_1 constant of the weight ww in terms of its A∞A_\infty constant (from above and from below). We also prove the sharp version of the Gehring theorem for the case p=1p=1, completing the answer to the famous question of Bojarski in dimension one. We illustrate our results by two straight-forward applications: to the Dirichlet problem for elliptic PDE's.

Sharp weak type estimates for weights in the class Ap1,p2A_{p_1, p_2}

We get sharp estimates for the distribution function of nonnegative weights, which satisfy so called Ap1,p2A_{p_1, p_2} condition. For particular choices of parameters p1p_1, p2p_2 this condition becomes an ApA_p-condition or Reverse Hölder condition. We also get maximizers for these sharp estimates. We use the Bellman technique and try to carefully present and motivate our tactics. As an illustration of how these results can be used, we deduce the following result: if a weight ww is in A2A_2 then it self-improves to a weight, which satisfies a Reverse Hölder condition.

An observation: cut-off of the weight ww does not increase the Ap1,p2A_{p_{1}, p_{2}}-"norm'' of ww

We consider weights ww and their cut-offs: wa(t)=w(t)w_a(t)=w(t) if w(t)≤aw(t)\le a and wa(t)=aw_a(t)=a if w(t)>aw(t)> a. We consider a generalized ApA_p-``norm'' and prove that the ``norm'' of waw_a is not greater then the ``norm'' of ww. Our proof in the case w∈A2w\in A_2 is especially simple.

Volumes of Discrete Groups and Topological Complexity of Homology Spheres

We address two fundamental and well-known problems of Gromov and Lyndon: \demo{Problem A} (Gromov, see [5]). Consider a category MnM_n of closed manifolds of dimension nn with nonzero-degree ways as morphisms. Study a partial order M≥N⇔Mor(M,N)≠ϕM \ge N \Leftrightarrow Mor (M, N) \neq ϕ. For which NN the degrees of maps f:M→Nf: M \to N are bounded for all MM? \demo{Problem B} (Lyndon, [12], problem 13). Extend and relate the theories of deficiency, the rate of growth and the Euler-Poincaré characteristic. In particular, what influence does the deficiency have on the structure of an infinite group?
