Augmentations, reduced ideal point gluings and compact type degenerations of curves

In this note we demonstrate some unexpected properties that simple gluings of the simplest derived categories may have. We consider two special cases: the first is an augmented curve, i.e., the gluing of the derived categories of a point and a curve with the gluing bimodule given by the structure sheaf of the curve; the second is an ideal point gluing of curves, i.e., the gluing of the derived categories of two curves with the gluing bimodule given by the ideal sheaf of a point in the product of the curves. We construct unexpected exceptional objects contained in these categories and discuss their orthogonal complements. We also show that the simplest example of compact type degeneration of curves, a flat family of curves with a smooth general fiber and a 1-nodal reducible central fiber, gives rise to a smooth and proper family of triangulated categories with the general fiber an augmented curve and the central fiber the orthogonal complement of the exotic exceptional object in the ideal point gluing of curves, called the reduced ideal point gluing of curves.

Rationality over non-closed fields of Fano threefolds with higher geometric Picard rank

We prove rationality criteria over algebraically non-closed fields of characteristic $0$ for five out of six types of geometrically rational Fano threefolds of Picard number $1$ and geometric Picard number bigger than $1$. For the last type of such threefolds we provide a unirationality criterion and prove stable non-rationality under additional assumptions.

Serre functors and dimensions of residual categories

We describe in terms of spherical twists the Serre functors of many interesting semiorthogonal components, called residual categories, of the derived categories of projective varieties. In particular, we show the residual categories of Fano complete intersections are fractional Calabi--Yau up to a power of an explicit spherical twist. As applications, we compute the Serre dimensions of residual categories of Fano complete intersections, thereby proving a corrected version of a conjecture of Katzarkov and Kontsevich, and deduce the nonexistence of Serre invariant stability conditions when the degrees of the complete intersection do not all coincide.

Categorical joins

We introduce the notion of a categorical join, which can be thought of as a categorification of the classical join of two projective varieties. This notion is in the spirit of homological projective duality, which categorifies classical projective duality. Our main theorem says that the homological projective dual category of the categorical join is naturally equivalent to the categorical join of the homological projective dual categories. This categorifies the classical version of this assertion and has many applications, including a nonlinear version of the main theorem of homological projective duality.

Coble fourfold, $S_6$-invariant quartic threefolds, and Wiman-Edge sextics

We construct two small resolutions of singularities of the Coble fourfold (the double cover of the four-dimensional projective space branched over the Igusa quartic). We use them to show that all $S_6$-invariant three-dimensional quartics are birational to conic bundles over the quintic del Pezzo surface with the discriminant curves from the Wiman-Edge pencil. As an application, we check that $S_6$-invariant three-dimensional quartics are unirational, obtain new proofs of rationality of four special quartics among them and irrationality of the others, and describe their Weil divisor class groups as $S_6$-representations.

Derived categories of singular surfaces

We develop an approach that allows to construct semiorthogonal decompositions of derived categories of surfaces with cyclic quotient singularities whose components are equivalent to derived categories of local finite dimensional algebras. We first explain how to induce a semiorthogonal decomposition of a surface $X$ with rational singularities from a semiorthogonal decomposition of its resolution. In the case when $X$ has cyclic quotient singularities, we introduce the condition of adherence for the components of the semiorthogonal decomposition of the resolution that allows to identify the components of the induced decomposition with derived categories of local finite dimensional algebras. Further, we present an obstruction in the Brauer group of $X$ to the existence of such semiorthogonal decomposition, and show that in the presence of the obstruction a suitable modification of the adherence condition gives a semiorthogonal decomposition of the twisted derived category of $X$. We illustrate the theory by exhibiting a semiorthogonal decomposition for the untwisted or twisted derived category of any normal projective toric surface depending on whether its Weil divisor class group is torsion-free or not. For weighted projective planes we compute the generators of the components explicitly and relate our results to the results of Kawamata based on iterated extensions of reflexive sheaves of rank 1.

Homological projective duality for quadrics

We show that over an algebraically closed field of characteristic not equal to 2, homological projective duality for smooth quadric hypersurfaces and for double covers of projective spaces branched over smooth quadric hypersurfaces is a combination of two operations: one interchanges a quadric hypersurface with its classical projective dual and the other interchanges a quadric hypersurface with the double cover branched along it.

Rationality of Mukai varieties over non-closed fields

We discuss birational properties of Mukai varieties, i.e., of higher-dimensional analogues of prime Fano threefolds of genus $g \in \{7,8,9,10\}$ over an arbitrary field $\mathsf{k}$ of zero characteristic. In the case of dimension $n \ge 4$ we prove that these varieties are $\mathsf{k}$-rational if and only if they have a $\mathsf{k}$-point except for the case of genus $9$, where we assume $n \ge 5$. Furthermore, we prove that Mukai varieties of genus $g \in \{7,8,9,10\}$ and dimension $n \ge 5$ contain cylinders if they have a $\mathsf{k}$-point. Finally, we prove that the embedding $X \hookrightarrow \mathrm{Gr}(3,7)$ for prime Fano threefolds of genus $12$ is defined canonically over any field and use this to give a new proof of the criterion of rationality.

Upper and lower densities of Gabor Gaussian Systems

We study the upper and the lower densities of complete and minimal Gabor Gaussians systems. In contrast to the classical lattice case when they are both equal to $1$, we prove that the lower density may reach $0$ while the upper density may vary at least from $\frac{1}π$ to $e$. In the case when the upper density exceeds $1$, we establish a sharp inequality relating the upper and the lower densities.

Synchronization of coupled generators of quasiperiodic oscillations

The dynamics of two coupled generators of quasiperiodic oscillations is studied. The opportunity of complete and phase synchronization of generators in the regime of quasiperiodic oscillations is obtained. The features of structure of parameter plane is researched using charts of dynamical regimes and charts of Lyapunov exponents, in which typical structures as resonance Arnold web were revealed. The possible quasiperiodic bifurctions in the system are discussed.

A note on the symplectic structure on the space of G-monopoles

Let $G$ be a semisimple complex Lie group with a Borel subgroup $B$. Let $X=G/B$ be the flag manifold of $G$. Let $C=P^1\ni\infty$ be the projective line. Let $α\in H_2(X,{\Bbb Z})$. The moduli space of $G$-monopoles of topological charge $α$ (see e.g. [Jarvis]) is naturally identified with the space $M_b(X,α)$ of based maps from $(C,\infty)$ to $(X,B)$ of degree $α$. The moduli space of $G$-monopoles carries a natural hyperkähler structure, and hence a holomorphic symplectic structure. We propose a simple explicit formula for the symplectic structure on $M_b(X,α)$. It generalizes the well known formula for $G=SL_2$ (see e.g. [Atiyah-Hitchin]). Let $P\supset B$ be a parabolic subgroup. The construction of the Poisson structure on $M_b(X,α)$ generalizes verbatim to the space of based maps $M=M_b(G/P,β)$. In most cases the corresponding map $T^*M\to TM$ is not an isomorphism, i.e. $M$ splits into nontrivial symplectic leaves. These leaves are explicilty described.

Exceptional collections for Grassmannians of isotropic lines

We construct a full exceptional collection of vector bundles in the derived category of coherent sheaves on the Grassmannian of isotropic two-dimensional subspaces in a symplectic vector space of dimension $2n$ and in the derived category of coherent sheaves on the Grassmannian of isotropic two-dimensional subspaces in an orthogonal vector space of dimension $2n + 1$ for all $n$.

Noncommutative Instantons and Twistor Transform

Recently N.Nekrasov and A.Schwarz proposed a modification of the ADHM construction of instantons which produces instantons on a noncommutative deformation of the 4-dimensional real affine space. In this paper we study the relation between their construction and algebraic bundles on noncommutative projective spaces. We exhibit one-to-one correspondences between three classes of objects: framed bundles on a noncommutative projective plane, certain complexes of sheaves on a noncommutative 3-dimensional projective space, and the modified ADHM data. The modified ADHM construction itself is interpreted in terms of a noncommutative version of the twistor transform. We also prove that the moduli space of framed bundles on the noncommutative projective plane has a natural hyperkahler metric and is isomorphic as a hyperkahler manifold to the moduli space of framed torsion free sheaves on the commutative projective plane. The natural complex structures on the two moduli spaces do not coincide but are related by an SO(3) rotation. Finally, we propose a construction of instantons on a more general noncommutative R^4 than the one considered by Nekrasov and Schwarz (a q-deformed R^4).

Parabolic sheaves on surfaces and affine Lie algebra $\hat{gl}_n$

We give an example of geometric construction (via Hecke correspondences) of certain representations of the affine Lie algebra $\hat{gl}_n$. The construction is similar to the one of [FK] for the Lie algebra $sl_n$. Given a surface with a smooth embedded curve $C$ we consider the moduli spaces $K_α$ of rank $n$ parabolic sheaves satisfying certain conditions. The top dimensional irreducible components of $K_α$ are numbered by the isomorphism classes of $α$-dimensional nilpotent representations of the cyclic quiver $\tilde{A}_{n-1}$. Summing up over all $α\in{\Bbb N}[{\Bbb Z}/n{\Bbb Z}]$ we obtain a vector space $M$ with a basis of fundamental classes of top dimensional components of $K_α$. The natural correspondences give rise to the action of Chevalley generators $e_i,f_i\in\hat{sl}_n$ on $M$. We compute explicitly the matrix coefficients of $e_i,f_i$ in the above basis. The central charge of $M$ depends on the genus of the curve $C$ and the degree of its normal bundle.

Global Intersection Cohomology of Quasimaps' Spaces

Let $C$ be a smooth projective curve of genus 0. Let $\CB$ be the variety of complete flags in an $n$-dimensional vector space $V$. Given an $(n-1)$-tuple $α\in\BN[I]$ of positive integers one can consider the space $\CQ_α$ of algebraic maps of degree $α$ from $C$ to $\CB$. This space admits some remarkable compactifications $\CQ^D_α$ (Quasimaps), $\CQ^L_α$ (Quasiflags), $\CQ^K_α$ (Stable Maps) of $\CQ_α$ constructed by Drinfeld, Laumon and Kontsevich respectively. It has been proved that the natural map $π: \CQ^L_α\to \CQ^D_α$ is a small resolution of singularities. The aim of the present note is to study the cohomology $H^\bullet(\CQ^L_α,\BQ)$ of Laumon's spaces or, equivalently, the Intersection Cohomology $H^\bullet(\CQ^L_α,IC)$ of Drinfeld's Quasimaps' spaces. We calculate the generating function $P_G(t)$ (``Poincaré polynomial'') of the direct sum $\oplus_{α\in\BN[I]}H^\bullet(\CQ^D_α,IC)$ and construct a natural action of the Lie algebra ${\frak{sl}}_n$ on this direct sum by some middle-dimensional correspondences between Quasiflags' spaces. We conjecture that this module is isomorphic to distributions on nilpotent cone supported at nilpotent subalgebra.
